[IRCA] Discussion of Daily Solar Space and Geomagnetic Weather Conditions

2013-02-11 Thread Thomas F Giella NZ4O

DISCUSSION OF DAILY SOLAR SPACE AND GEOMAGNETIC WEATHER-
For Sunday February 10, 2013

Solar activity is high as far as the emergence of the number of new sunspot
groups. Currently there are 8 new un-numbered sunspot groups and 3 existing
numbered sunspot groups.

Solar activity is low as far as the number of new solar flares, 1 occurred.
The largest solar flare in magnitude was a very small in size B2.7,
associated with sunspot group #11670, located at approximately N17W05.

The daily solar flux index (SFI) has been above 100 for 11 consecutive days,
currently at 105.9.

The daily sunspot number (SSN) has languished below 100 for 26 consecutive
days, currently (NOAA) at 45.

The geomagnetic field has been quiet for 3 consecutive days with the Kp
(planetary) index in the 0-2 range. As collected by Potsdam Germany WDC the
3 hour Kp (planetary) intervals are 21110111. As collected by NOAA/SWPC the
3 hour Kp (planetary) intervals are 0011.

The Dst ranged between +13 and -16. On the Kyoto web page the last 5 hours
of data was missing but I think that the available data is representative of
the day.

indices affect MF, HF and VHF radio wave propagation go to

time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A
positive number is best.

11.) Galactic cosmic rays decrease to -10 units below zero and trending
towards zero.

[IRCA] TP for 11Feb2013 from Victoria: not bad!

2013-02-11 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Listened this morning from 14:50 to 15:30 or so. The first tier Japanese
were in at decent levels, as well as the Koreans, too. Things faded pretty
fast, though, so by 15:30 nothing much to hear. I wouldn't say anything
was super strong, and the domestic splatter was pretty bad, but reception
was fair enough to understand the language and some content (if I spoke
Japanese or Korean!). 73, Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, BC

[IRCA] Tom Ray Leaving WOR

2013-02-11 Thread Rick Lewis
All Access reports that Tom Ray is leaving WOR, where he's been chief
engineer for more than 15 years.
He'll be running a consulting business.
I suppose the writing was on the wall after Clear Channel purchased the
station.
He was certainly a staunch IBOC defender in its early days, although he's
seemed less optimistic about its viability in recent years.

2013-02-11 Thread Larry Stoler

I'm sorry to hear that Tom Ray is leaving WOR.

Although I disagreed with his feeling about iBOC, I know he was a good chief
engineer.

I wonder if Clear Channel will bring in a contract person. They have done
that at other stations in there clusters.

Re: [IRCA] Tom Ray Leaving WOR

2013-02-11 Thread Tom Dimeo

Last Friday Tom Ray put out a press release saying he
resigned from Clear Channel and WOR to start his own
consulting business.

In todays Northeast Radio Watch Scott Fybush says:

** Begin Quote **

NEW YORK
coverage begins in lower Manhattan, where one of the city's
longest-serving broadcast engineers has parted way with the
station he completely rebuilt last decade. Tom Ray's time at
WOR (710) lasted just over 15 years, and what a decade and a
half it was: he oversaw the station's move from its (very)
longtime 1440 Broadway address downtown to the financial
district, shepherded its New Jersey transmitter relocation
through a veritable swamp of political and physical
obstacles, and made himself a national lightning rod with his
vocal initial support for HD Radio on AM.(Tom literally wrote
the book on the topic, in fact.)

Ray had been serving as national director of engineering when
Buckley Broadcasting sold WOR to Clear Channel last year, and
he gave up the remaining Buckley stations to stay with WOR.
Now he's stepping down from that post to launch his own
independent consultancy, Tom Ray Broadcast Consulting, with
another big announcement coming tomorrow.

[IRCA] TP for 8 Feb 2013; the lost Victoria version

2013-02-11 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

We, maybe I should have gotten up earlier, because listening around sunrise
didn't get me anything close to what Gary was reporting. I did do some quick
listening around 1400UT when a couple of the big guns showed some strength, but
1510UT onwards didn't yield much of interest, I'm afraid.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

not today

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

774 JOUB man in JJ 1354UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could be
understood by a native speaker:

747 JOIB man in JJ at 1515UT
972 HLCA woman in KK 1355UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

567 JOIK man in JJ //594 1355UT
594 JOAK parallel to 567 1355UT
828 JOBB man talking //774 1512UT
936 man talking 1357UT; would guess Anhui.
1053 Korean jammer 1358UT
1287 JOHR? man burbling in the murk 1510UT; JJ inflection at peaks.
1566 man talking in murk 1530UT, presumably HLAZ
1575 man talking at near imaginary strength 1519UT

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

864 1098 1251 1323 1593

best wishes,

Nick

2013-02-11 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Low band big guns were at reasonable strength after 1400UT, and not much had
changed after 1500UT, but sticking around paid a dividend or two, as things
popped into life just before 1510UT to be crushed pretty much by the local noise
popping into life at 1520UT. Perhaps things were starting to fade anyway.
except that JOUB banged in with its biggest signal at 1524UT for a short time.

in the 550(!) splash
603 HLSA slow vocal mx //558 1511UT

I just turned on the radio for a little while and have to get up at 5:30
tomorrow so i can't DX but it seems like a very good night, first in a while, I
have something on 1116 but it's not loud enough to ID the language,

Re: [IRCA] WLGC 1520 Greenup, KY

2013-02-11 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
I found a website for WLGC Radio, it's mainly for 105.7 FM.. their country
signal.

www.wlgcradio.com

When listening to the FM's webstream, there is a link to the AM webstream,
which is still running and playing The True Oldies Channel.

CAUSING, AMONG OTHER THINGS, A FIRE AT THE TRANSMITTER SITE. SINCE THAT

ANTENNA, THUS CAUSING THE AM TRANSMITTER TO BECOME UNRELIABLE. THE LICENSEE
HAS ENGAGED AN ENGINEER TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM, BUT HE IS UNABLE TO BEGIN
WORK ON THE PROJECT UNTIL SOME TIME IN DECEMBER, 2012. THE ENGINEER HAS
ADVISED THE LICENSEE TO SHUT DOWN THE TRANSMITTER ALL TOGETHER TO AVOID
FURTHER DAMAGE. UNTIL THE LICENSEE CAN GET THE TRANSMITTER
REPAIRED/REPLACED, IT IS ASKING FOR SPECIAL TEMPORARY TO REMAIN SILENT
UNTIL IT CAN RETURN TO THE AIR AT LICENSED PARAMETERS.

2013-02-11 Thread Chernos Saul

Had some of the usual TA signals, none with great audio. We're likely in what
some call the mid-winter anomaly. Hot two weeks to a month ago, cx not terribly
good this week-long trip here.
