Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] DX Test Cancellation

2013-08-23 Thread Chernos Saul
Disappointing, yes, of course. But Paul you have organized enough tests that
have come off. Like WDEV last week, which netted at least one DXer a new state
(VT). Gary is very much with us in this; I am confident something will be
rescheduled, and *maybe* the silver lining is it will happen in the thick of
the coming season.

Keep at it...and thanks for the heads up.

[IRCA] WINW 1520

2013-08-23 Thread David Faulkner
Hi All:

WINW, 1520, Canton, Ohio IS operating with its black gospel format.  However it
appears to be running much reduced power.  As far as I was able to tell,
driving through, it quickly grows inaudible as one leaves the city of Canton.
The signal strength is not only weak in the city, the sound quality is poor.
Indeed this is the first time I ever heard a local signal fade when the car
passed under an overhead sign in the heart of its city of license.  I wonder if
they're running it into a longwire.  They are certainly not using their
directional array so, to go on protecting the 1520 just 20 miles away in Kent,
they must be using very low power.  In the time I listened I heard only female
announcers and they ran right through the TOH with no ID.

Also noted: No sign of WCER, 900, so they are still off, as is WEMM, 1200,
Huntington, WZZW, 1600, Milton,, WV, and WLGC, 1520, Greenup, KY.  WZUM, 1550,
Braddock, PA was running black gospel and WAVL, 910, Apollo, PA, calls itself
,"The New WAVL," but continues with its old format of contemporary Christian in
the AM (until 9:00), and then goes to religious talk.

[IRCA] REMINDER: DX TEST TONIGHT TONIGHT WITH A BONUS!!

2013-08-23 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Tonight, it's KHMO 1070 Hannibal, MO and WLIQ-AM 1530 Quincy, IL doing the
testing.

KHMO will test with it's day and night powers/patterns. WLIQ will test with
it's daytime and critical hours powers, they are non directional. Critical
Hours, for those who dont know... is from sunrise to 2 hours after and from
2 hours before sunset right up to sunset.

THE BONUS?

WLIQ was once considering 3 Watts of non directional night power. In
addition to the published 1 hour test from 130am to 230am, WLIQ will test
at 3W non directional from 230am to 245AM.

All times are central!

A morning for extreme minimalist DXing today.   Not much sunrise
enhancement, and mostly low level Asiatic.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

not today

Reasonable audio  at  times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

279 R. Rossii man in RR followed by jazz 1234UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

738 Tahiti woman in FF 1304UT
1053 KK jammer at its "best" 1206UT
1566 HLAZ finally reached this level w/preacher in JJ 1259UT;   the
JJ program hadn't managed to get past the levels heard during the CC
broadcast at 1210UT until now.

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music) :

180 R. Rossii jazz //279 1234UT
594 JOAK pips at 1300UT (really reaching here)
747 JOIB  pips at 1300UT (reaching here also; it was a dull morning)
774 JOUB NHK pips 1200, the jolly sounds of EE lessons by man and
woman at 1232UT
828 JOBB man and woman, distinctive enthusiastic EE lesson patter
1548 man talking in splatter 1255UT, likely 4QD?

Re: [IRCA] QRM Problem

2013-08-23 Thread Michael Yule
Hi Nick - thanks for asking about the noise problem I was having. Yes, for the
most part I am happy with the overall noise level now. I replaced the loop with
a new 1530S+, and that cut down a good chunk of it (I can't refer to S units or
dB because the darn ICF2010 doesn't have an actual S-meter, but this step
reduced average noise by 1 or 2 'LED Units'). Then I replaced the rotator cable
with a shielded one, and voila another 1 or 2 'LED units'. I also changed the
position of the loop on my lot, and even though it's now in the middle of the
forest and downslope (therefore lower) than where it used to be, another couple
of LED units disappeared, I suspect because it's farther from the house by 5 or
6 metres. Of course it's always 2 steps forward and 1 step back, and with all
this wonderful QRM reduction I noticed a horrendous 120 Hz hum coming from the
FL3, so I built a really skookum AC line filter that John Bryant had up on
DXing.info, which completely knocked that out. T!
here is also 1 circuit on the electric panel that has the outdoor motion
sensors (I'm pretty sure it's these) on it that I keep permanently turned off,
although my wife is not entirely pleased with this solution because it also
means we have no front porch light or entry hall lights...I'll be working on
this sometime soon I suspect.

Long and short though is that it's fun listening again, and while my time at
the dials is still somewhat limited right now because of work and house renos,
I enjoy what time I get. I'm thinking about putting up a couple of Pennants
when I get a chance, as I'd like a bigger capture area than the loop can
provide, and from what I can tell these would be good in my poor ground
conductivity location.

Thanks again for your help!
