You're listening to a test broadcast of a travelers information radio station.
This radio station broadcasts messages 24 hours a day on a special AM frequency

No other data, or local identifier ... just this, in a loop. There's also some
kind of weird sound or tone underneath, not sure if the same station. On my

[IRCA] FCC Must Get Back into the Inspection Business

2014-01-15 Thread Les Rayburn

http://www.radioworld.com/article/weiner-fcc-must-get-back-into-inspection-biz-/223133

Strongly agree that IBOC has been a dismal failure and should be removed
from service in the AM band. The other recommendation that should be
strongly considered is the enforcement of FCC Part 15 rules.
Interference levels have more than tripled here in just the past few
years. Much of it caused by poorly designed Wall Wart switching type
power supplies.

In the 1950's through the 1990's, the vast majority of household devices
incorporated a power supply into the cabinet of the device that
performed the function of converting AC power into DC power. Nowdays,
such things are very rare. The vast majority of devices use wall wart
switching power supplies, many of these are huge radiators of
interference in the AM Band, often at great distances.

Even ham transceivers, which used to incorporate DC supplies now rely on
external DC supplies entirely. It reduces the overall cost and size of
the product, but the trade off is a lot more interference. The device
can be FCC certified, but often the switching power supply is not
included in that evaluation.

I'm copying the test loop right now on 1710 also at 0244 UTC. It's
mixing with Radio Celestial and is coming in at about the same level as
I hear the Hudson County TIS station here, but I can't be for certain if
this is Hudson County or a new one on the frequency. I'm not hearing
Hudson County under this at the moment. I'd like to hear both
simultaneously before ruling out the Hudson County, NJ. TIS.

Re: [IRCA] More info re new 1710 TIS

2014-01-15 Thread Tim Tromp
I just found this on the HFU message board suggesting this is the Hudson
County, NJ. TIS. As copied from the HFU post:

A huge signal here on 1710 KHZ with the following message...You're
listening to a test broadcast on a Travelers Information Station.
This radio station broadcasts 24 hours a day on a special AM
frequency licensed by the Federal Communications Commission.
This message repeated non-stop and still going strong at 2345 UTC. I
have never ever heard the Hudson TIS this strong, so must be
   something new and possibly local?
Still going strong with same loop at 0020 UTC. S9+10 here.
I emailed the person responsible for answering inquiries related to
TIS stations that I found on the FCC website and below is the reply
I received this morning 1/15/14. It would seem that Hudson County is
testing with increased power of 100 watts.

Hudson County New Jersey is authorized to use 1710 KHz under call
sign WQFG689 and has a pending application to increase the power to
100 watts. Hudson County was granted a waiver of the FCC rules to
use frequency 1710 KHz back in 2008. Waiver grant language is below:

Waiver of Rule Sections 2.106, 90.242(a) and 90.103 granted
11-14-08, and special conditioned to require that operation on
frequency 1710 kHz is secondary to authorized full service AM
stations. The licensee must mitigate the interference by either
reducing TIS transmitter power or ceasing TIS operations on
   frequency 1710 kHz.

[IRCA] TP 15 Jan, Victoria version

2014-01-15 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Well, yes, it was a lousy morning..possibly the lousiest morning
this season. A few hints of talk on 1575 around 1600UT (better on
the west rather than the north Flag for a change). Beyond that, 972
and 738 each delivered a reasonable carrier at a couple of points
between 1300 and 1600UT this morning.

So far as I can tell, the antennas are still up...

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] AM Stations broadcasting C-QUAM Stero

2014-01-15 Thread dcain53 .
I'm aware of two in the midwest:
KGRN (1410 Khz, 500/50 Watts, Grinnell IA ND2 U). Content: music, news,
sports, etc.
WLS (890 Khz, 50KW U, Chicago) This one is odd, since they have been
news/talk since (I think)1989, with a hi-fi analog signal. . Interestly,
they still have the old Top 40 jingles (minus Musicradio 'w -LL -s') in
stereo.

Radio: 1994 Buick C-QUAM/Hazeltine AM Stereo capable.
PS: Three Clear Channel stations in this area
WHO Des Moines IA, 1040 Khz, 50 KW, U; (News/Talk)
WMT Cedar Rapids IA, 600 Khz, 5 KW ND2 U (News/Talk)
and KXIC, Iowa City, IA(800 Khz, DA2 U 1KW/200 (News/Talk) about six
months ago (I think simultaneously) pulled the plug on IBOC and all are
broadcasting a high quality, hi-fi analog signal.

[IRCA] CFMB 1280 Montreal

2014-01-15 Thread dxerak

Because of its northern night pattern, CFMB 1280 Montreal is a very rare
visitor at my QTH in Madison WI. However tonight it is dominating 1280 here
with a strong signal and very little QRM, so perhaps pattern is out of whack or
it is still on day power. Programming is ethnic with occasional call letter IDs
in FF.

[IRCA] Alberta TP/DU for 14 Jan 2014

2014-01-15 Thread Nigel Pimblett
I could pretty much copy what Nick reported today. The only
audio was a feeble effort from 1575 VOA shortly before 1500. Otherwise,
just the occassional carrier, and not many of them.

[IRCA] TP non-DX in Seattle on Jan 15

2014-01-15 Thread Bruce Portzer
My morning was much like what Nick and Nigel reported. A carrier on
1566 that maybe had a moment of audio. Another carrier on 972. That was
all I could come up with.
