[IRCA] TP 24 Oct Victoria version

2015-10-24 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Thought I'd give the morning another chance, so checked the
recordings. Yes, there were erratic signs of life, but not enough
to get very excited about.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

nope

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

1566 HLAZ woman in Japanese, briefly at 1303UT. Man in Chinese
1408UT, hung around on and off, mostly lower strength, for the next 25 minutes.

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

738 Tahiti island vocals 1407UT, woman talking sounded islandish as
well rather than French

774 JOUB English lessons 1323UT
1575 VoA? woman in SE Asian language 1324UT, then again 1349UT, on
and off for next 20 minutes or so, no ID at 1400UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

972 HLCA? female ballad after pips 1300UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

747 828 945 1323 1557

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] AM BCB DX - ELAD Captures for Oct/24th………..

2015-10-24 Thread Robert Ross
Hi Guys:

I remembered I had an Old Homebrew 2 1/2 Foot Box Loop stuffed away in a
Closet, so I thought I would drag it out and see how well it would work with
the ELAD SDR. The 100 Foot Longwire I have been using with the ELAD is very
Noisy, and I was hoping the Box Loop would drop my Noise Levels quite a bit and
help to hear some decent stuff. I just tuned the Loop to 1100 Khz roughly the
middle of the band and let the ELAD do the rest. I realize a Box Loop should be
tuned to each individual frequency, but that is not possible when you are
recording the entire AM BCB…so I wasn't really sure what I was going to
accomplish , but I was pleasantly surprised at how well it functions with the
ELAD!!! I'm going to experiment some more with it….but the Loop is extremely
Quiet and dropped the Noise Levels here by about 7 - S Units!!! The signals
are not quite as strong as with the Longwire, but with the drop in Noise, they
are are much more listenable!! I really had my doubts that this was going to
work well…….but against all odds…..it did!! The Loop was just sitting on the
Basement Floor about 7 Feet Below Ground Level!!!

Here is a sample of what I heard last night…….Nothing New was heard, but a few
of these stations I have not heard for a Long time!

Re: [IRCA] Rockworks, Oregon Non-DX Report for Oct. 24th

2015-10-24 Thread Chuck Hutton
Gary -

We split up with the idea of comparing the 2 locations. We think 4 has horizon
blockage from 300 degrees northward so might not give us some Asians. It does
have a better "backscreen" cliff wall behind it.

Rockworks 2 has no horizon blockage towards Asia. But a bit more signal might
leak in from behind with the less imposing cliff wall behind it.

Guy and I have a better impression of Asiatic reception from Rockworks 4 than
you. Perhaps because we have been there in the fall (TP season) while your
comments mention July lack of TPs.

In fact, each location had a Flag or ALA100LN mast supported loop (50 or

[IRCA] FS Phillips DC777

2015-10-24 Thread Walter Salmaniw
I'll be in WA and OR this upcoming Friday to Sunday, and it's convenient to
ship to any US address. I have a Philips DC777 cassette receiver that I
purchased new from EEB a number of years ago. Those who know about car SW
radios, know that they were few and far between, and often very expensive,
and poor performers to boot. The DC777 was finally a good performing
in-dash receiver, which I had for several years in a VW Westfalia van. I
still have fond memories of listening to Radio Australia, HCJB, and even
Radio Damascus while driving the highways of BC. On top of that, it had a
very good FM radio. AM, I don't recall the specs, but am sure it was good,
too. There's also a nice cassette deck (remember those?). Anyway, when I
sold the van, I carefully removed the set and put it away expecting to hook
it into my next vehicle, which never happened. I'd like to part with it
now, and connect it with a good home. It's fully functional (I fired it up
with a car battery and no issues). Please let me know if you're
interested. USD$150 please. 73, Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, BC

Re: [IRCA] Rockworks, Oregon Non-DX Report for Oct. 24th

2015-10-24 Thread d1028gary
Guy,

I don't know if your group was setting up at the usual Rockwork 4 turnoff
location this morning, but if so, I would certainly suggest that you shift your
setup location to Rockwork 2 (the largest turnoff) tomorrow morning.

Rockwork 4 is a flat ocean cliff facing directly in the DU direction, and
although it provides superb DU-DXing results in the summer, it typically
attenuates all Asian signals down to almost nothing in July. Rockwork 2, on the
other hand, faces the Asian direction, and would also offer the bonus of more
antenna setup space for your group. Although this morning's Asian propagation
was definitely nothing to shout about, the best ocean cliff propagation
currently available would probably be at Rockwork 2.

This is assuming that there is no large RV parked there for the weekend, with
an owner who assumes that he has a valid claim to the turnoff by virtue of
having been a "resident" for an extended period (I am using a respectful term,
rather than the one that we used among ourselves last summer).

I've noticed some comments from Nick, Colin, and Gary that inland DX
reception this morning was "TP dead", "maybe some carriers if I squint",
etc.Fla

Well, those descriptions fit the Rockworks cliffs this morning also! Chuck
Hutton, Dave Aichelman, Chris Black, and myself tried everything but tribal
coastal Indian DX chants to make the TPs (or even DUs) materialize, but it
just wasn't a-happening this morning. No matter what the antenna--from
medium sized Flag loops to compact 1-meter active Wellbrook loops-- the DX
just wasn't appearing. The DXer conversations before and after the morning
sunrise session were good, however!

We were all impressed with Chris' setup for his first Oregon cliffs DXing
session; he had a nifty low-buck table constructed in the back of his small
SUV which looked very comfortable. We did have to do a team "antenna
relocation project" for him, however... his rectangular loop and masts were
far too close to the highway for safety reasons. After shuffling everything
to the west about 20 feet we all breathed a sigh of relief.

I'd say we had *maybe* a dozen TP frequencies in weak to moderate (at best)
audio this morning with perhaps 8 or 12 more frequencies as carriers only.
Most of the signals in audio were big gun Japanese... but barely
propagating this morning. VOA Thailand 1575 was pretty good around the
1420-1430 sunrise enhancement period, but that's the extent of it.

Hopefully Sunday morning will be better!

Goes to show that no location, apart from Walt's Haida Gwaii perch (where you
can practically see Japan from his cabin windows...) is immune to the current
spate of depression inducing solar terrestrial conditions...

The difference between "The Rock Works" and My QTH is that my bed is only 2
flights of stairs away from a King size bed and a duvet pre-warmed by my young
wife...

It's quickly becoming a good time to concentrate on tweaking antennas, tuners,
phasers, switches and generally tidying up.

[IRCA] Masset DXpedtion 15 - 23 October 2015: Part 3

2015-10-24 Thread Walter Salmaniw
1026 PHILIPPINES Quezon City 25 kW DZAR Sonshine Radio, Oct 21 1414 - Very
good (S9 +10) reception of this very rapid fire stations. Multiple news
items in Tagalog, interspersed with, 'Newsflash'. Multiple IDs at 14:20 at
excellent levels! Fabulous reception. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

1026 PHILIPPINES Quezon City 25 kW DZAR Sonshine Radio, Oct 20 1538 - Good
reception noted with preaching in presumed Tagalog, followed by a hymn.
For those interested, measuring 3 Hz high. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

1053 JAPAN CBC Nagoya 50 kW JOAR, Oct 16 1507 - Absolutely blasting the
frequency, and no sign of the North Korean jammer, which was audible a
couple hours ago. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

1062 AUSTRALIA ABC, Oct 21 1600 - I was happily listening to a very strong
DZEC, and tuned back before the TOH for an ID. Instead, there was a weak
but clear, ABC fanfare and into news. So, the big question is which of the
2 weak 2 kW transmitters is this originating from? Either 4T1 Thursday
Island, or 5RN Renmark? I'm pleased nonetheless. I note that the Grayland
crowd have heard both. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

1062 PHILIPPINES Pasig, Metro Manila 40 kW DZEC Radyo Agila, Oct 21 1527 -
Excellent reception in Tagalog with a male rapid speaking DJ. Many
mentions of Manila and Philippines. An excellent Filipino morning for
sure!. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

1080 ALASKA Anchorage 10 kW KOAN Hot Talk, Oct 23 1513 - Call in show about
weather birth in the US should automatically result in American
citizenship. Tom Anderson show (a local call-in show). Followed by a
local ad for fresh King Salmon at 12.99 a pound and Halibut 'only' 11.99 a
pound. 1 kHz tone present. Not sure origin of the tone. ?KCBS?.
(Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

1125 PHILIPPINES Legaspi City 5 kW DWAS FEBC (tent), Oct 21 1434 - A
tentative logging. I'm sure this is a Filipino, but I'm not certain of
which one. At good reception with a Christian flavour. Some oldies music,
as well, followed by 'stand by'. Suffering from significant splatter from
1130 Vancouver. Language did not sound Tagalog to me. PAL also states
they broadcast in 'Bicol'. Not sure what that sounds like. By 1440, NHK 2
popped up (between 0.1 and 10 kw, with the latter originating from Okinawa)
mentioning NHK. TheFilipino is still very well heard, however. At 14:42,
a well known vocal hymn in English. I, therefore, assume that this is
indeed DWAS. No obvious ID at 15:00, with the inevitable fade down, but
rapid fire, presumed sign-off announcements, and then the Philippine
National Anthem. Interesting for sure!. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

1170 ALASKA North Pole 50/21 kW KJNP, Oct 23 1522 - Dominant station this
morning. Earlier, they were alone on the frequency, but on recheck now,
KBS is starting to dominate, with the latter // to 972. (Salmaniw, Masset,
BC)

1170 SOUTH KOREA Gimje 500 kW HLSR, Oct 20 1753 - Still going very strong
hours after my LSR, in parallel to much stronger 972 kHz. Cochannel KJNP,
Alaska also strong. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

1205 CHINA unknown site CNR 1, Oct 21 1541 - I hear someone on 1205. Not
in English. Laid back oriental program. Only audible on the NW BOG.
Signal strength varies greatly. I know that Yanbian RGD is on the low
side, but not this low. Who might this be? Almost as strong as 1206 which
has 2 stations, not well heard on it. So 1205 is much stronger. Chuck
Hutton noted this station on April 1, 2006 at Grayland at 12:51, so not a
new station. At 15:46, definitely Chinese. As we pass our local dawn, the
signal improves to quite good. I'm hearing some echos, suggesting multiple
sites. This is fascinating! Checking for //, I note that it is CNR1 // to
1593. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

1215 Unid, Oct 16 1444 - As so often happens, what starts as a fairly weak
session turns into a monster session. An interesting frequency at good
level playing 'Dust in the Wind'. A several word annoucement, and
immediately into another American vocal. Oriental cochannel, which
disappeared when I switched to my ALA 100 oriented SW/NE. Then into
'Woman'. OK, who can this be? Appears 2 Hz high, with weaker carriers
measuring 1214.990 and 1215.013. After another English song, all there is
is another quick idea, like 'Radio Rupa' or something like that, and
immediately back to another vocal in English. Remains a mystery, as it
faded down by 15:00. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

1215 PHILIPPINES Cebu City 10 kW Word Broadcasting Corporation, Radio
Fuerza DYRF, Oct 17 1458 - My highlight this morning. Full ID in Tagalog,
with lots of English words. I suspect this was my unid from yesterday
morning. I'm very pleased. Lots of mentions of DYRF, permits, the
Philippines, etc. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

1314 PHILIPPINES Paranaque 30 kW DWXI, Oct 22 1554 - While making notes,
noted the Philippines national anthem at 16:17, so suspect that DWXI signed
off at this time, and not the listed 18:00 in PAL. Under JOUF at this late
hour. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

[IRCA] Masset DXpedition: Part 2

2015-10-24 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Appears that I went over the (IMHO) silly 35 kB rule once again with my
DXpedition report. So, I'll do it in 3 parts, instead of 2. Here's part 2:

738 PHILIPPINES Philippine Broadcasting Service Bulacan NCR 40 kW DZRB, Oct
18 1550 - I'm quite certain that I heard this station this morning with
Tagalog talk, with some English words. Fair to good reception. No ID, of
course, but no other Filipino listed on this frequency. (Salmaniw, Masset,
BC)

738 TAHITI Papeete 20 kW Radio Premiere Polynesie, Oct 19 1422 - Good
reception with lovely Polynesian music and clearly in Tahitian, and not
French. Best heard on the DKAZ. Excellent reception on recheck at 14:41,
but now in French, and then back to Tahitian, although the French appears
to be ads. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

740 HAWAII Kihei 5 kW KCIK, Oct 19 1340 - Immaculate Heart Radio
tentatively mostly under very strong KCBS with religious content. A
tentative logging, heard only using my DKAZ antenna aimed at Hawaii. As
expected, reception improved markedly after LSR in California, and good
reception with Immaculate Heart Radio IDs at 14:17 UTC. Interesting that
KCBS came back to dominate briefly at 14:20 (LSR over northern
California). Excellent reception at 14:45. Continues at great level at
15:00 where there's a super brief ID for 'KCIK, Kihei, Maui', and then back
to network programming. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

747 SOUTH KOREA KBS 1 Bia, Gwangju 100 kW HLKH, Oct 16 1549 - The NHK 2
network signed off today at 15:40, leaving the channel clear. Up to very
good reception of the Korean. With 500 kW for JOIB Sapporo, and 100 kW for
HLKH, I wonder how they avoid QRMing each other?. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

774 JAPAN Akita 500 kW NHK2 JOUB, Oct 23 1422 - English lessons about when
it is not polite to ask for a doggie bag. British have an aversion to do
so. Waste not, want not in Japan. Portion sizes are far too large in the
US, etc. When first tuned in, barely audible, which is very unusual.
Instead, there was a cancophany of stations co-channel. A disturbed
morning, I suspect. At 14:26, I think I can make out a Filipino station.
(Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

774 JAPAN NHK 2 Akita JOUB, Oct 19 1547 - I haven't noticed this before,
but watching the Perseus waterfall, both 774 and 828 (JOBB Osaka), cut
their transmitter at 15:47. Perhaps a new energy savings measure, or
transmitter maintenance?. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

774 PHILIPPINES Ilollo City 10 kW DYRI, Oct 22 1547 - Great! Previously,
I've been hearing DWWW, but just caught the sign-off of DYRI, with call
sign, power, location, etc in English, followed by the National Anthem.
Part way through the NA, DWWW came back at very good strength! A bit of a
mushy signal, which I think is due to the 2 (or more) stations being a
little different in frequencies. I suspect KYRI was on 774.027, while DWWW
is on 774.004. If I really zoom the waterfall, I think there are actually
5 carriers measuring: 773.997, .999, 774.005, .008 and .027. An
interesting frequency, for sure!. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

774 PHILIPPINES Quezon City 25 kW DWWW, Oct 22 1534 - At my local dawn (LSR
15:29), there was a huge boost of signals, and especially from Japan, but
also the Philippines. 774 JOUB is a 500 kW powerhouse, of course, from
Akita, but for a while DWWW was giving it a good run for it's money. I can
still hear them underneath JOUB. Assuming that the NHK2 network will sign
off in a few minutes (15:40), and then turn off their transmitter, we
should be able to hear DWWW well this morning. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

774 PHILIPPINES Quezon City 25 kW DWWW Music of Your Life, Oct 20 1624 - A
presumed logging with 50s/60s American vocals. Good reception, with weak
cochannel(s). Once again, JOUB (and other NHK 2 network transmitters)
turned off their transmitters shortly after signing off at 15:40, leaving
the frequency open. Rechecking at 17:36, several hours after LSR (10:36 AM
local), still playing the same genre of music at fair level. Addendum: I
went back to listen to my mp3 from the 7030+. At 15:45, there's a long
monologue about the program, 'Just For You' with announcer George ? and
then, 'right here on DWWW 774'. In the clear with fair signal. (Salmaniw,
Masset, BC)

783 VIETNAM Voice of Vietnam 2 (tentative), Oct 16 1554 - Fair to good
reception with a female vocal. Sounds Christian, but further listening
leads me to believe it's most likely the 2nd program of the Voice of
Vietnam with 500 kW listed from Thoi Long. Time pips at 16:00, but fading
out making this a tentative logging. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

801 UNID unid, Oct 19 1512 - Very good reception of Unshackled or similar
program in English. Faded away by 15:30, so no local IDs heard.
Possibilities here are: KTWG Agana, New Zealand's Rhema in Nelson, or
possibly a Filipino. More digging needed to ID this one! I reviewed the
Grayland Masterlog, and there are a number of references to KTWG with
American religious programming

[IRCA] A couple of QSLs

2015-10-24 Thread Nigel Pimblett

A couple of QSLs recently:

CFCW840 Camrose, AB
Form letter from Douglas Mattice in 17 days for report on 1st day on
new frequency.

KIDR740 Phoenix, AZ
Full data verie letter from Steve Blodgett in 18 days. He mentions
recalling my name from earlier reports, and indeed I have several from
him during his time in Montana (dating back to 970 KOOK in 1976), and
one from when he was in California.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-24....

2015-10-24 Thread d1028gary
Here in Puyallup it was also a clunker session for sure, with all the Asian big
guns except for 1566-HLAZ turning their nose up at the lackluster propagation.

The meager signals that showed up were all from Korea and Thailand, the best of
which was from 1566 during its Japanese service at 1335 (fair to good).
558-HLQH also managed a few gasps past the 560 splatter around 1405, and
ghostly audio from both 603-HLSA and 657-Pyongyang surfaced around 1425.
Finally,1575-VOA also managed fair audio at 1438 for about 5 minutes, but that
was about it. Even the Japanese big guns took the day off (like we should have
done).

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 24 October 2015

2015-10-24 Thread Nigel Pimblett

Putting a positive spin on things, I had twice as many TPs as
yesterday. 1575 VOA joined HLAZ today, both having fair audio in the
1312-1330 time period. HLAZ wasn't as strong as yesterday, with VOA
winning by a nose for the strongest signal. As for anything else,
carriers here and there, none that inspiring.
