All true, and all already mentioned. But what I was asking is whether your
numbers were adjusted for the difference in antenna gains.I'm trying to compare
apples and apples as much as possible. Just like we can't just compare raw
numbers for systems with preamps of different gains without mentioning the
difference, we can't compare the Rockworks numbers without mentioning the
differences between Dave's system and yours.

Re: [IRCA] Interesting Rockworks Discovery & Oct. 25th DX Comments

2015-10-25 Thread Guy Atkins
Hi Chuck,

Yes, the LNPro Imperium model has higher gain than the other, but also a
lower noise floor for overall higher S/N (I just finished documenting this
on a weak SQM 529 kHz signal away from the splatter of the rest of the
band; I consistently got 6-8 dB better S/N on the LNPro model of loop
compared to the S+ Imperium).

Anyway, I was using a better ALA1530 model of antenna than Dave's, and
still he was getting improved reception from Rockworks 4 due to noticeable
splatter reduction. It was easy to tell by simply listening and looking at
the spectrum displays. The measurements just confirmed it.

[IRCA] TP 25 Oct Victoria version

2015-10-25 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Mostly not too exciting, barring another appearance of CNR1 on
1593. If any peak, was around 1430UT, and signals were pretty
erratic for the most part

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

nope

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

747 JOIB man in Japanese 1425UT
774 JOUB woman in Japanese, fading up from 1400UT, when it was fairly weak
972 HLCA female vocal 1433UT, then woman in Korean

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

594 JOAK woman in Japanese, briefly at this level 1425UT
1566 HLAZ woman in Japanese, s/off routine 1342UT
1575 VoA got strong enough to allow man saying "Voice of America" 1430UT
1593 CNR1 one short low, and one long high pip at 1430UT, distinctive
Beijing time check; woman talking before then had been //6125

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

1287 woman talking, likely Japanese?
1323 slow music 1435UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

 702 828 864 891 963 1008 1017 1053 1116 1242 1332 1404 1422 1503

A lot livelier out here in Alberta. Carriers, many of them quite decent
everywhere from top to bottom. Only 189 Iceland with audio tho. the 2100
Eu wire best on 189, but outdone badly on the low part of the band by the
NE pointed DKaz with the difference becoming minimal in the upper portion
of the band.

Isn't the gain higher with the Imperium loops? And the noise a bit lower? You
didn't mention making any adjustment, so are the numbers below raw numbers? I
see the ALA1530LNP is said to have a 10 dB S/N improvement, assumedly against

[IRCA] Interesting Rockworks Discovery & Oct. 25th DX Comments

2015-10-25 Thread Guy Atkins
Yesterday Dave Aichelman gave me a copy of his HDSDR WAV file covering two
minutes of the local SR enhancement we encountered at the Rockworks cliffs
in Oregon. We thought it would be interesting to compare signal-to-noise
ratios of the (definitely below average) TP DX we heard with similar
antennas but different locations on the cliffs.

Dave was using a Wellbrook ALA1530 1-meter active loop at Rockworks #4,
known as the prime location for Kiwi MW DX in the summer. A few hundred
yards north at Rockworks #2 I had the two newest models of ALA1530
"Imperium" loops, the ALA1530S+ and the ALA1530LNPro.

We and others like Gary have assumed that Rockworks #2 is easily the
preferred DXing site for chasing TPs due to the less-obstructed horizon to
the northwest. Well, I measured a number of high, mid, and low-band TP
stations for signal-to-noise ratios on my 1428-1430 UTC HDSDR recording
(Rockworks #2) and compared them to the same time & stations captured on
Dave's recording (Rockworks #4). Surprise! TP/Asian reception from
Rockworks #4 was anywhere from 8 dB to *20* dB *better* from the Rockworks
#4 turnout! Remember, we were using very similar 1-m. active Wellbrook
loops, so it's reasonable to conclude that the unique topography of the two
turnouts on the highway accounts for the differences.

Rockworks #4 has sheer rock cliffs immediately to the east and southeast
blasted into the mountain when the highway was built, and there is also a
grid-like steel curtain of cables covering most of the cliff walls (to help
contain any boulders that may tumble down toward unsuspecting DXers).

Here's a map of the Rockworks locations:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3lhmy1jqHQ6dnRqM1oxTC1BYXc/view?usp=sharing
(note:
Rockworks #1, not shown, is [I think] a gravel turnout from the highway
further north, and quite a bit further back from the cliffs... therefore
it's a location we've not tried yet)

>From the comparison results of TP DXing at #2 and #4 and the excellent
summer time Kiwi (and sometimes Aussie) DX at #4 the last few years, I can
tentatively conclude that "Rockworks #4 Rules!" any time of year. The moral
of the story: splatter reduction of local & regional pest stations accounts
for the S/N improvement at Rockworks #4, and is a unique benefit of this
location.

What's next? I think we need to start working on a "squatter eviction
strategy" for Rockworks #4. Now that we know this spot is preferred, we'll
need creative ways to "urge" any non-DXers parked at the turnout to move
along :^)

Gary DeBock deserves a big "thank you" for his initial discovery of the
site referred to as Rockworks 4. If it wasn't for his investigative DX work
and Ferrite Sleeve Loop (FSL) experimentation the last few years we may
never have known about this special place on the Oregon coast for DXing.

--
Regarding this morning, Oct. 25, DX reception was a definite improvement
from yesterday, although I wouldn't call it a barn-stormer of a session.
Reception started out Asian / TP like Saturday morning but signals began
mixing with DU outlets around 1415 UTC. 747 kHz was 50-50 Japanese and
Australian until presumed 4QS Toowoomba dominated closer to SR. Frequencies
like 567 and 1116 kHz were DU all the way from SR enhancement onwards.
English-sounding mumbles were noted on other frequencies as well. Most of
these were logged with the ALA1530LNPro oriented towards TP-land, but by
1435 I rotated to loop to favor DU.

This is the first time I've used the two Imperium loops together in a
DXpedition setting and I'm finding they provide a high level of low noise
performance in a compact package. They are quick to set up, and an
excellent antenna for limited space locations like the Rockworks cliffs.

Re: [IRCA] Rockworks, Oregon Non-DX Report for Oct. 24th

Your assessment of the relative cliff geometry is very accurate, Chuck. It
would be great if Rockwork 2 had a "perfectly shaped" cliff for Asian reception
like Rockwork 4 has for DU reception, but its shape isn't nearly so dramatic.
We have only scratched the surface in investigating ocean cliff transoceanic
propagation, though, so we probably still have quite a few discoveries in
store.

<<>>

After investigating all of the northwest Oregon ocean cliffs from 2011-2012
there was only one that I thought would really perform for Asian TP's-- Cape
Perpetua. Unfortunately it is remote, highly exposed to foul weather and
extremely cramped for broadband antenna setup (at the Highway 101 turnoff, that
is). Rockwork 2 is closer to Puget Sound and has much more antenna setup space,
but doesn't offer the same cliff geometry. If given a choice between Rockwork 2
and 4 for Asian TP reception, though, Rockwork 2 should be preferable.

Of course, when Asian propagation is dreary along the entire west coast neither
location is likely to meet expectations.

Guy and I have a better impression of Asiatic reception from Rockworks  4 than
you. Perhaps because we have been there in the fall (TP season) while your
comments mention July lack of TPs.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-25

2015-10-25 Thread d1028gary
Thanks to Colin and Nigel for their earlier reports. Unfortunately there was no
dramatic improvement in Asian signal strength this morning (at least not at
this mediocre location). Some promising signals around 1310 took a swoon by
1330, and a lackluster sunrise enhancement brought up very few second tier
TP's.

In the total darkness at 1310 both the 1053-Jammer and 1566-HLAZ were managing
fair to good signals, along with fair audio from the Japanese big guns and the
somewhat unusual 558-HLQH. These all took a dive by 1330, with very little
Asian audio across the band. Around 1400 the Japanese on 594 and 747 came back
up to fair strength, while 603 came out of the noise with a weak mix of China
and HLSA around 1405. 657-Pyongyang also managed threshold audio around the
same time, while 738-Tahiti (a sure sign of substandard Asian conditions here)
confirmed the dreary propagation with weak audio at 1430. Late on in the
session around 1435 both 1575-VOA and 1593-CNR1 came out of the noise to manage
ghostly audio, but bailed very quickly after that. Overall the session was
pretty lackluster, and fairly typical of the dreary propagation during this
lean solar year. Hopefully the group at Rockwork had much better Asian results
than this mediocre location provided, but I'm not very optimistic about that.

Re: [IRCA] West coast hallows TP - October 25 - Victoria LIVE

2015-10-25 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
And yet, 1593 at 1430UT with pips and Beijing time check was pretty
reasonable. Admittedly, there wasn't a whole lot else beyond peeps
(not pips) from 972 1566 and 1575, but the peak, such as it was,
seemed somewhere around 1430UT.

I wonder if the band is moving away from Japan as the fall
progresses. See what the Rockworks crew says.

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 25 October 2015

2015-10-25 Thread Nigel Pimblett

Rather an odd morning. In general, the lower band seemed better than
the upper, yet the low-powered 1602 freq had a decent carrier for much
of the session. 594 was doing quite well, yet not even a carrier on
567. Some of the carriers seemed DU, but all the audio was Asian today:

594JAPAN, TokyoJOAK
The best of the TPs today, first noted weakly with talk by a man at
1350. Sunrise enhancement pushed it up to a good signal at 1400 with
pips and into woman talk by woman. The only one of the Japanese "big
guns" to get out of the mud today.

693JAPAN, TokyoJOAB
Very weak, with woman talking at 1338

1566KOREA,S., ChejuHLAZ
Poor, with woman talking at 1343.

1593unID
Traces of music noted at 1344

Yes - virtually all Sony Mini Disc recorders...

I have Two - I use both rarely - but they were HUGE in Asia
so there are many, MANY on Ebay.

Media still readily available.

Well……I don't know why this Homebrew Box Loop is working so well, all I know

it to 1100 Khz and let it record TOH throughout the night and early morning

Here are 3 NEW STATIONS it managed to pick up……all relatively LOW POWERED Stuff
