Re: [IRCA] Quoddy House 6 DXpedition - Nov. 15-21, 2015

2015-11-24 Thread Sylvain Naud
Thanks for sharing this excellent report Bill and congrats for your logs
and recordings of Ethiopia and Eritrea. How I would love to hear them
here ... As for Botswana, in my wildest dreams maybe? I generally have a
hard time with the African continent here inland.

I love reading others' DXpedition reports & loggings. In that same spirit I
offer the following.

From Nov. 15-21 I was at Quoddy House to try my luck at east-coast-style
trans-oceanic DX.

While there's still LOTS of wav files to go through, enough is available to get
a 'glimpse' of things.

Highlights so far include Ethiopia on 918 and 1359 kHz and Eritrea on 945 kHz.
Thanks to the great folks on the RealDX mail list for ID help!

Quoddy House [QH] is near Lubec, Maine:

As much as a DX opportunity, a visit to QH is an opportunity to try out new
antennas and new configurations of trusted antennas. Over the past few visits
I've gotten an idea of where it's possible and useful to put up antennas. This
year I stuck with what I’ve come to consider my ‘stock’ weapon - a 160’ DKAZ —
one at 55 degrees for TAs and one at 155 degrees for LatAm. I used a Vactrol
termination resistance to vary Rt from the shack and then replaced it with a
fixed resistor when I had determined the best value.

Here's a chronology of when each antenna was up and in what configuration it was in
on which day:

Instead of a 'traditional' log I put up sound samples of what I heard on a
website. The website for QH6 is here:

Besides the sounds [accessed by clicking the ‘play’ symbol in the
antenna/time/date vs. frequency matrix], other links of interest include:

- stats for what was heard:

- AzGraph for each antenna to illustrate how it worked:

- a Google Map of what was heard:

Hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy putting it together. Stay tuned
for more entries to be added over the next few weeks.

I work along with young adults and they have fun with me when I refer to
any "mailing list" reflectors in which I contribute. I must admit that I
agree with them that this type of platform is near to obsolete when
comparing to Facebook just to name one, which is much more lively,
interactive and handles more than 35 KB per message :)

When is this limitation (relic of DOS / floppy disk / dial-up era) going to be
fixed? Any serious DXpedition report, or even a home log covering more than a
week is going to run into this problem.

Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP Carriers for 11-24

2015-11-24 Thread Nicholas Hall-Patch
I've been spending a couple of days with a north facing Kaz antenna, and a
water path up the Strait of Georgia, so my results are from another planet
somewhat.

But, the deterioration in Asiatic conditions this morning was also observed
here. Yesterday morning there were Chinese on channels such as 1359, and a
thunderous 1593. Today 1593 was decidedly languid, and there were only
hints of Chinese stations on 1017, 1098, and at sunrise, 945; otherwise
mostly Japanese, but on channels like 1116, so still in the category of
really good DX at home.

Also, there were a few weakish TA's last night, audio on 855, 999 and
1215. 855 might have been Romania, as the webstream had a man and woman
trading items back and forth, similar to what I was hearing, but that's a
pretty common format for news on the hour, and anything distinctive on the
webstream was during a fade in real life.

I have a DX Fishbarrel running here (
http://www3.telus.net/public/shallpat/test2/display1.htm), in case anyone
is interested in DX on another planet, hi. Right now, it is as dull as
everywhere else..

best wishes,

Nick

I believe any member of the IRCA radio club (that sponsors the IRCA list)
is entitled to make any proposal they wish to the IRCA Board, and that
would include proposals concerning how the list functions. If you're a
member of the club, look at the back page of DX Monitor for contact
information.

If someone is not a member, I'm sure the club would be happy to have new
blood.

Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP Carriers for 11-24

2015-11-24 Thread Nicholas Hall-Patch
fiction I'm afraid Walt. Given that there actually isn't much noise on
that frequency, you may have discovered a bug.

There is a very weak carrier on 189 however, so that might bear watching.

2015-11-24 Thread Nicholas Hall-Patch
One reason I didn't count it Chuck. I didn't have a working link for RNE,
but did for Romania, and it was pretty similar to what I was hearing at the
time, so thought I should mention it. A target is a target.

Interestingly, Romania has been heard before in Victoria, and may be at
least as likely as Spain. Usually the more northerly TA paths have had
the advantage during TA openings in this part of the world.

Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP Carriers for 11-24

2015-11-24 Thread Chuck Hutton
Nick:
Check out RNE'shome page at http://www.rtve.es/radio/ and then click on "RNE a
la Carta" which takes you to the page where you can select "Escuchar Ahora".
This takes you to:
http://www.rtve.es/alacarta/live_radio_PopUp.shtml?id=1712486=undefined==es

Yes, I noted that you said it was "pretty similar" but also noted the format of
"man and woman talking" is way too common to allow assumptions.
Since "man and woman" is not very conclusive, I'd check the RNE audio. It's a
path to sureness.

we, the club's government is democratic. If the members want change,

2015-11-24 Thread Nigel Pimblett
As Gary noted, TP reception went back into the tank this morning,
with only Korea 1566 offering any audio, for about 5 minutes either side
of 1330.
Had a much more interesting reception earlier, when I logged WDAE
on 620 at 1100 UTC. Hearing anything eastward through CKRM is very
unusual, let alone Florida.

Were this an act of Congress or a change of philosophy, I'd agree to have
proposals in triplicate, have a committee review it, follow processes and go
through the rest of the bureaucratic stuff.
It's just a minor update to the list server.
Why can't we just do it?

The club is a democracy with a Constitution, President and Board of Directors.
It can't "just do it".

I believe any member of the IRCA radio club (that sponsors the IRCA list)
is entitled to make any proposal they wish to the IRCA Board, and that
would include proposals concerning how the list functions. If you're a
member of the club, look at the back page of DX Monitor for contact
 information.

If someone is not a member, I'm sure the club would be happy to have new
 blood.

 best wishes,

 Nick

Re: [IRCA] [CapeDX] Quoddy House 6 DXpedition - Nov. 15-21, 2015

2015-11-24 Thread James Renfrew
Bill and Mark and everyone else,

Here's where we're at with a Newfoundland report. We were in Cappahayden
NOV 7-16. John Fisher, Jean Burnell, Chuck Hutton and me. One crisis that
may have turned into an opportunity is that we suffered killer buzzsaw
interference at our normal location, something in the power line and it was
centered on our exact location though evident for about a mile radius. One
of our resourceful team members went knocking on doors in nearby Renews and
found a willing saint allowing us to use the garage and oceanside
countryside for Perseus operations and two antennae. So unlike previous
years, that included north and Brazil wires, at Renews we aimed east with
one wire and more to the west on our south wire. Several days in each wire
moved about 15 degrees further to the west. Eritrea is one of the loggings
that the east wire seems to have allowed; maybe not possible on our old
north wire. The downside is that we were not able to engage in live DXing
at all during our time there. It's all in the recordings; it's all review.
So, at this point, we have little to share concerning the daily conditions.

We are still behind in reviewing Perseus files from 2010, 2011 and 2013, so
2015 will be even more challenging because each team member has the
complete east/south files from 1930-1100 for each day (disclaimer: some
days the south recordings failed; a DX curse of sorts). It takes me several
days, usually, to get through just one file; and I think we have 300 of
them.

So the first thing we agreed to is to submit a complete file of November 7
to the various lists, so that's what we're working on as a first step.
I've completed the east wire for the 7th (lots of Spanish locals, more
Egypt than usual, lots of of open channels, but the south wire is more
time-consuming). As Brazil fades in at 2030 lots of low-powered
northeastern stations (Ceara, Rio Grande Del Norte, Algoas) are audible
before the higher powered Brazilians kick in. I've heard at least 20 new
Brazilians between 2030 and 2200 I am now up to 2230, and I hope we will be
able to circulate our report for November 7th soon.

Some of our team has been dabbling in dates beyond the 7th, and impressive
logs of Eritrea and Panama have been reported. I can't wait to get there!

Re: [IRCA] IRCA Digest, Vol 139, Issue 52

2015-11-24 Thread Guy Atkins
Hi Gary and Mark,

My efforts to add varactor tuning to the FSL antenna haven't been
abandoned, just put on hold. I gathered all the parts and scoured the Web
for various circuits and approaches for using varactor tuning, to to
reacquaint myself with the pros and cons of varactors, but that's it so far.

As usual I currently have a number of partly finished radio related
projects going on, and I haven't returned to this one. Right now I'm
working on wrapping up a LCD digital readout for a Sony ICF-EX5MK2, and
also doing a LED mod to replace the backlighting lamps inside of a mint
condition, vintage Zenith Trans-Oceanic I acquired.

It's just a case of too much work and commuting! Retirement one day sounds
nice :^)

Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP Carriers for 11-24

2015-11-24 Thread R. Colin Newell
Indeed it did - I was up before 1300 UTC and noted signs of life scattered
across the band but little more
than solid carriers -
I took my device to bed with me to keep an eye on things -
And by 1430 things had perked up slightly on the upper band but not enough
to warrant to getting vertical.
Peeks at 1500 indicated that there was likely audio on 1557, 1566, 1575 and
1593...
as of 1630 there was still evidence of activity on 1566 - no surprise there.

Good DX all.

Good info so far Bill.

Here are two things you may want to dig for right away:
(1) South Africa 828
(2) Off-channel Guyana which has been recently noted on 559.924 by Jim Renfrew
in NL (see below) and (as carrier in WGAN slop) by me here at South Yarmouth in
OCT on approximately 559.93. I need to take a better shot at this one, maybe
breaking out a phaser to "stick it" to WGAN better than what the SuperLoop
alone can do. That will still leave WFIL, Rebelde, WQAM, and WHYN more or less
in that order on 560. Right after sunset would likely be the best time.

You and Jim might want to compare DXpedition notes; I'm copying him on this
message.

I'm reviewing recordings from our first day in Newfoundland, November 7th.
There's a ton of stuff to report on, but one item in particular may be most
immediately useful. At 2228z on November 7 I have the Voice of Guyana in
English operating on or around 559.924. I don't know if this carries
through the whole week we were there (NOV 7-16), but in case it does I want
you to know about it! It may be just off enough to heard over a distance.
Go get'em!

Quoddy House [QH] is near Lubec, Maine:
;

Here's a chronology of when each antenna was up and in what configuration it
was in on which day:  ;

Instead of a 'traditional' log I put up sound samples of what I heard on a
website. The website for QH6 is here:

;

Besides the sounds [accessed by clicking the ‘play’ symbol in the
antenna/time/date vs. frequency matrix], other links of interest include:

- stats for what was heard: ;

- AzGraph for each antenna to illustrate how it worked:
;

- a Google Map of what was heard:  ;

Hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy putting it together. Stay tuned
for more entries to be added over the next few weeks.

Asian propagation took a nosedive this morning as signs of TP life were limited
to a few weak carriers. At first check around 1430 only ghostly high band
carriers on 1566 and 1593 were in evidence, and these did not improve with the
increasing daylight. 774 also managed a weak carrier around 1505, the only
evidence of any sunrise boost. In comparison with the past couple of days
1593-CNR1 seemed to have fallen off of a cliff, and the NHK big guns seemed to

there will be Thanksgiving for improved DX.

Re: [IRCA] Logs - Cape Cod, MA: OCT 2015

2015-11-24 Thread R. Colin Newell
I actually manage a LISTSERV like this and it is no more complicated that
logging into the ADMIN interface
and "Upping" the KB limit.

My Listserv is currently set at 100KB which accommodates most large reports.

At some point I will also start work on pitching a new website design for
IRCA at no charge --
and yes, I understand that this LIST is only informally related to the IRCA.

A list such as this could be so much more - this is 2015 after all and the
list could
have the capacity (should have the capacity...) for MP3 attachments, small
videos, text files and photos...)

Re: [IRCA] [CapeDX] Quoddy House 6 DXpedition - Nov. 15-21, 2015

2015-11-24 Thread Bill Whitacre
Just went thru most everything I have for TOH and BOH recordings for 828.
'Best' day is 11/19 around 0100utc, same day Ethiopia and Eritrea were coming
in at 0300utc. Lots of carrier - as 'big' as WCRN on 830 at times - but almost
NO modulation. Either someone is really soft-pedaling the modulation OR
there's a number stations just a touch off-freq causing canceling.

I'll put up what I have for the one voice anmt that I can dig out later when
I'm home from the office. Other than that I've got some snips of non-descript
pop music at various times.

I would expect better from Newfoundland.

When is this limitation (relic of DOS / floppy disk / dial-up era) going to be
fixed? Any serious DXpedition report, or even a home log covering more than a
week is going to run into this problem.
