Re: [IRCA] 1470-CJVB Reception on Ultralight Radio in Japan

2016-03-10 Thread d1028gary
Hi Bob,

<<<  Please don't take this in the wrong way, but as the owner/operator of a
showroom stock, barefoot ULR, what is a "barefoot" ULR?   >>>

A very good question, actually!

A straight barefoot ULR is a stock model exactly as it came from the factory.
Obviously, a PL-380 with a transplanted 3" FSL antenna doesn't fall into this
category. But it is still a "stand alone" DXing portable, without any gain
boost from an externally connected (or inductively coupled) high-gain antenna.
It is fully portable, similar to a stock ULR. It certainly can be boosted by
external antennas, but most of the DXers choose to use these models in their
fully portable form, where their unique combination of high sensitivity and
selectivity can result in surprising transoceanic receptions. For want of a
better term, when these radios are used in this way without any external
antenna boost they can be considered in a semi-barefoot category, or
"barefoot," as opposed to when these same models are boosted by high-gain
external antennas. The same term might be used for stand-alone 7.5" loopstick
models when they are used in a fully portable way. Of course for ULR Award
purposes, all of these models fall into the "Unlimited" category, since the
Tecsun engineers would probably suffer cardiac arrest if they saw them.

One of the local Puget Sound area pest stations has provided a big thrill for a
Japanese DXer. Hiroyuki Okamura of Yokosuka, Japan has posted a video of his
reception of 1470-CJVB (Vancouver, BC) across the Pacific on his new "barefoot"
3" FSL Tecsun PL-380 model last night. Hiroyuki seems thrilled by his "Science

Unfortunately, Neil, it faded out before I could snag an ID from it, then I had
to head out the door to go to work. As Earl Higgins and Tim Hall have already
suggested, XEUT is also a possibility, and one that I hadn't considered. I'll
have to try for it again tomorrow morning, and this time, try to line it up
with an online stream.

No idea. I checked the website for the 4 stns on 1630 linked from Station Intel
and there seems to be no format changes so I have no idea.

Perhaps someone's automation screwed up and was playing their FM or perhaps the
station played this one song for whatever reason. Did you listen longer to see
if another oldie was played or did it fade out?

[IRCA] Arizona TP report, March 10th

2016-03-10 Thread Brian Rachford
I finally had a chance to put together a summary of this mornings good TP
reception and put together some audio. Although I was making an SDR
recording, I also worked this one live. This was with my 7' x 24'
Superloop, pointed 300 degrees, about 10 degrees south of Japan. (I
usually shade the antenna a bit south in the hope that some day I'll get
something from Hawaii or Australia and pointing directly at those isn't
very practical for me.)

Activity was already in progress when I started a little before 1200 UT
(5am MST), and this turned into quite good reception. It started out
mostly on the low-end of the band, but the upper-end kicked in by around
1225 UT. By far the best activity was during the 12UT hour, with a
decrease near the end of the hour. Some stations were doing pretty well
after 13UT, including 1566 HLAZ out of Korea, but in general activity
wasn't very good then. Activity totally fizzled out by local sunrise at
1347 UT (6:47am). The real surprise was the strength of 1134, presumably
HLKZ out of Korea, producing brief bursts of fair audio.

Good audio: 1566
Fair audio: 747, 774, 1134
Weak audio: 693, 828, 972, 1422, 1557, 1593
Marginal audio: 558, 567, 594, 1053, 1197, 1287, 1386, 1413, 1575
Carriers (mostly weak): 603, 819, 864, 873, 1008, 1143, 1188, 1206, 1224,

Re: [IRCA] Super KAZ update

2016-03-10 Thread Patrick Martin
Thanks for all of the kind words. Okay, I went out to look at the damage. It
could have been a lot worse. 90+ MPH winds, a lot of roofs were blown off and
there was damage to many homes in the area. Mine is fine. Over the shingle
roof, I had a metal one put on years ago and it stayed on during the 2007 big
blow (150 MPH gusts), so I figured the house was safe. No trees can hit the
house anyway. Yes, the tree in the backyard was uprooted and landed in the
field and there is quite the hole in the backyard. When the winds die off and
it dries off, it will be taken away and the hole filled in. The SW EWE came
down, but the wire did not break, but I will have to get the tree out of there,
before I can put it back. The Eastern Beverage is broken in a few places, but
repairable, but it will be a bit of time until I get that back to normal too.
the NE EWE is toast as the tree came down, but I rarely used it, except during
TA's. The only antenna still standing in the NW EWE. But agai
n, I can fix it all. The wind moved an anchored travel trailer of a neighbor's
4 feet! My TV antenna got twisted 180 degrees and I lost two snap on elements
(91XG). I had some spares, and that it back working fine. I lost some tar paper
off my old shed, but the old tar paper is under it, so no big deal. I can
repair that easily. This was our 6th worse storm in history. But nothing like
the biggie in 2007 that went on for 3 days with 100-150 MPH winds! As far as
the Super EWE goes, I still have a few ideas. As there are two trees out there
in the backyard, but first the old tree has to go. As many of you know, I have
lived out here since 1981 and I have seen a lot storms and yet, I always seem
to get my antenna back going. Maybe I need to replant for more ShorePine trees.
They grow fast, so maybe I can use them in years to come.

These logs are excerpts from my daily all-band reports, mainly SWBC, also
VHF/UHF, sometimes utility, ham, which may be found in several archives without

http://www.hard-core-dx.com/index.php?topic=Hauser

And compiled weekly along with extensive news from many other individuals and
publications in DX LISTENING DIGEST:
http://www.worldofradio.com/dxldmid.html

All my MW DX reports starting August 2011 are archived in this forum with open
access:
http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?6543-MW-DX-from-Enid-OK-by-Glenn-Hauser/page45

All times and dates strictly UT. Rx: mostly DX-398 with internal antenna only
or PL-880; NRD-545 with ALA-330S inside E-W or inside randomwire N-S; Nissan
stock caradio as specified; ICR-75  E-W longwire; FRG-7 with NW-SE shortwire

** MEXICO. 620, March 7 at 0628, Mexican music is dominating Plano, from the
SW, which is not unusual, presumably XEBU Chihuahua2; yes, soon ID mentioning
Chihuahua, but can`t copy whether still called La Norteñita. 0630 a PSA for
Cámara de Diputados – despite being voiced by a YL, she no longer calls it
``Diputadas y Diputados`` -- another policy change in nomenclature? Now there
is a second SS on the frequency not so far west; probably one of the seven
other XEs listed on 620 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 620, March 7 at 0646, Spanish slogan for ``el catálogo de ---
música`` then playing classic hit in English ``I`m a Believer``. IRCA Log has
three 620 stations with music in E, probably the big`un, XENK in México DF,
50/5 kW. Checking website
http://www.620.com.mx/programacion.php
Now I`m certain: detailed program schedule shows:

``00:00 EL CATALOGO DE ORO DE LA MUSICA DE RADIO 6.20 --- con la música de la
colección que nadie se puede perder, entre los que se cuentan "Café Concierto",
"Instrumentales de Siempre" y "Gracias por el Recuerdo". Varios días en
diversos horarios.``

Also watch out for `Retrospectiva 620`, slogan, or program title for Wed 20-22
local. XENK also counts upon significant newshour blox and even gospel huxters

** CANADA. 2749-USB, March 6 at 0242 UT, almost human neatly enunciating YL
voice with marine weather at nice S9 level, gale warnings for numerous places.
Canadian Coast Guard website shows VCS Halifax has just started at 0240 via
Sambro NS site with ``Radiotelephony --- Technical marine synopsis, forecasts

running S2.5 on the NRD-545 with E/W ALA-330S. I am noting this for baseline
purposes, to compare later if it varies significantly over daytime groundwave

** U S A. 690, March 9 at 0712 UT, big open carrier looping E/W, obviously KGGF
Coffeyville KS an hour+ after normal local midnite ``sign-off``. Often left on,
but not always; depends on humidity?

BTW, 10/5 kW U4 KGGF is being bought by the cross-border Bartlesville OK
station group including little KWON-1400 and KPGM-1500, so look for possible
format change on KGGF; also getting three FM stations in the deal (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1480, March 4 at 0120 UT, big dominant signal from NNW/SSE with
bluegrass, then classic country segués, next at 0121 UT being ``Hey, Porter``
about a train ride. It must be the reactivated KBXD in Dallas, whose new format
is yet to be determined; stunting for now?

After another tune or two, at 0129 UT, singing ID ``Wonderful K-Box in Dallas,
Texas hits too, go-go-go``, then coal-mine song; several more songs, no
announcements, let alone commercials. 0147 UT, ``Wonderful K-Box in Dallas,
a-go-go, souvenirs, oh oh oh oh `` and a second one immediately,
``Super-hit go-go sounds of wonderful K-Box in Dallas``.

Blowing away my closer 1480, KQAM Wichita, but occasionally pokes thru during
Dallas fades, as it`s wrapping up a silly ballgame from the K-State Wildcats
Network. KQAM gains more and more from 0155 UT to 0200 UT such that I can`t get
a legal ID if any from the otherstation.

Of course, this is not KBOX, but currently called KBXD, obviously in tribute to
the heyday rocker of 50 years ago, which just reactivated a few days ago, after
a rocky ownership transfer involving access to the transmitter site; it`s been
upgraded to 50/1.9 kW, and I seriously suspect it must have been on 50 kW day
power until 0155 UT. Official night hours in March for KBXD are: 0030 UT-1245
UT.

50 kW day pattern major lobe is to the NW but still plenty to the NNW:
https://transition.fcc.gov/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/1547811-120922.pdf

1.9 kW night pattern has six lobes, major one still to the NW but tighter now
with one of the six nulls toward Wichita:
https://transition.fcc.gov/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/1547811-120923.pdf

As for KBOX, those were the heritage calls of 1480 Dallas, but FCC callsign
history only goes back to 1989, showing that KBXD is the seventh one since
then. There is now no KBOX anywhere on AM, but FCC has a KBOX on FM 104.1 in
Lompoc CA. pdfs of ancient history cards at FCC show that 1480 Dallas started
in 1952 as KGKO, and became KBOX in 1959.

During its previous period of reactivity a couple years ago, KBXD was making a
heavy SAH with KQAM, but now the frequency has been adjusted closer, due to a
Harris DX50 replacing the solid-state Nautel. KBXD was on for a few days in
December to prove

If you have to use poles then you may want to consider a DKAZ. Here is a
great article by Mark Durenberger that may be of interest:

I have one of Colin's Vactrol units on the way, it left San Francisco at

deploying a 140' DKAZ using the Wellbrook FLG100N and Vactrol.

Perhaps someone's automation screwed up and was playing their FM or perhaps

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 3-10

2016-03-10 Thread d1028gary
Asian propagation improved quite a lot over yesterday with several strong
signals from the big guns on 594, 693, 747, 774, 972 and 1566. 1575-VOA also
managed a steady fair level during sunrise enhancement to become the standout
performer of the morning.

At my 1350 start time several NHK stations were managing good to very good
signals in and out, including 594, 693 and 747. 972-HLCA also was strong during
the predawn darkness with several S9 runs over "Freedom 970" splatter. The high
band already had 1575-VOA as the best performer with a steady fair signal
(which it maintained right through the session until around 1430), along with
an unusually steady signal from 1503-JOUK and a less vibrant one from
1593-CNR1. Some more obscure low band TP's on 603 (apparently China), 639, 657
and 738 made some halfhearted efforts to maintain audio from 1400-1430 but in
general were stuck in the twilight zone between readability and imagination.
1134 also had audio in and out during the period (apparently Japanese, in
keeping with the trend) but couldn't seem to shake off Vancouver for any length
of time. Overall it was a fairly good session for March, although strong audio
was certainly limited to the Japanese and Korean big guns. Stiff wind from the
latest weather front played havoc in the back yard, though, with various radios
threatening to go airborne at times.

[IRCA] 1470-CJVB Reception on Ultralight Radio in Japan

2016-03-10 Thread d1028gary
One of the local Puget Sound area pest stations has provided a big thrill for a
Japanese DXer. Hiroyuki Okamura of Yokosuka, Japan has posted a video of his
reception of 1470-CJVB (Vancouver, BC) across the Pacific on his new "barefoot"
3" FSL Tecsun PL-380 model last night. Hiroyuki seems thrilled by his "Science
Fiction PL-380" catch-- maybe one man's pest is another's treasure?

Gary,

Thanks. I'll figure something out. I cannot do much until the old tree is
removed though. The gusts are still 50-60 MPH as I type this. I can always
plant new trees, but then I have to wait for them to grow. hi.

Re: [IRCA] Super KAZ update

2016-03-10 Thread Patrick Martin
Les,

Thank you Les. But you know me, I will figure something out. I always do. Not
happy to lose a good anchor tree, but that is the luck on the coast with old
trees and our rain and wind. There is always some option out there. I even
thought of running a cord or wire across from the two trees and use the center
as the apix point for a Super KAZ. There is probably something I can come up
with. I will check into it more in the morning. I cannot do much until the old
tree is removed through. I still need to fix my TV yagi too.

2016-03-10 Thread d1028gary
Patrick (and Les),
I'm very sorry about the windstorm and related damage, Patrick. After multiple
visits to your property I can tell by your description that it was an extremely
destructive event. I've also experienced the vicious nature of these Oregon
ocean coast windstorms during an ill-advised DXing trip to the Rockwork ocean
cliff in November of 2012, and very well remember all of the huge trees dropped
by the 2007 windstorm in the area. Hopefully you will stay safe, and leave the
antenna work for later.

Thanks, Les. Here in inland western Washington we have the same weather front,
but it's 99% rain. In western Washington and BC this is the normal winter
situation, and we only really pay attention to the weather when rare sunshine
(or much stronger wind, or snow) comes around.

I know that’s disappointing, since you were excited about experimenting with
new antennas. But the key thing is that you are safe. We are the ones who are
grateful for that. The hobby wouldn’t be the same without you.

Hope Gary and others in the Northwest are also well.

[IRCA] TP 9 Mar Victoria version

2016-03-10 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

Results here a bit better than Bruce's; back to all Asia, and the big guns

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

not yet

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

594 JOAK man in Japanese 1323UT
774 JOUB English lessons "yes I am so into shopping" 1406UT, but
giggling like the Japanese girls (at least on the radio. Perhaps the
real ones might be a little different)

828 JOBB man in Japanese //774 1327UT
1566 HLAZ 1402UT with man in Chinese

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

the above passing through

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

747 JOIB man talking 1419UT, //774
891 JOHK woman in Japanese //594 at 1328UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

972 1098 1107 1269 1287 1314 1323 1503

best wishes,

Nick
