Re: [IRCA] Re Russian long wave

2016-09-12 Thread Patrick Martin
Colin,

The only Russian LW (279), I got a direct e mail QSL card from the CE. He was
quite surprised how well 279 got out. The only other Russian LWer I got QSL'd
was 151 kHz back in the 60s with a Radio Moscow transmission in Russian. 279
was common here on the coast.

Re: [IRCA] a Few AM DX Notes from Alaska

2016-09-12 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Thanks, Paul! Alaska is still a place of old-time radio. They're always a
joy to hear. Where networks feeds are not that common, and community news
is still big. Hawaii can be the same, in some cases. Further afield,
places like PNG and Solomon Islands also have that kind of programming.
I'm sure people in the lower 48 and Canada would love to try for them with
a DX test. 73,Walt

Hi Paul,

You've probably already been asked this but are you able to arrange some dx
tests with some of these Alaskans for the dead of wintertime?

[IRCA] Fwd: My First TP AM DX Logs!

2016-09-12 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Ughh! I'm told that this needs to be pared to < 35 kB. Give me a break!

Paul, nice recordings! You simply need to download the Pacific Asia List
(this is a LW and MW list, now maintained by our own Bruce Portzer from
Seattle). This will help you with the stations and proper frequencies.
You seem to have a good pathway to Japan. This is not surprising, as I
also receive Japan with thunderous signals in Masset. I'd be interested in
hearing the difference closer to dawn, and after dawn. This is when I hear
everything at it's strongest, with much less local station splatter. Here
is what you heard:

693: JOAB Tokyo 500 kW NHK2 station, so very easy to check for the many
// frequencies.
954: JOKR Tokyo 100 kW
1134: presumed JOQR Tokyo 100 kW (although I always have trouble
differentiating it with cochannel HLKC Kimpo with 250/500 kW in Korean)
1188: presumed JOKP Kitami (on Hokkaido, the most northern Japanese
Island) 10 kW with NHK1 network. Again, lots and lots of // including the
flagship 594 kHz. (there's a cochannel Korean from Seoul HLKX with 100 kW)
1323: your best catch. Should be NHK1. There are many repeaters with
either 0.1 or 1 kW. Often, all we get is CRI in Russian here.

You'll notice that many Japanese stations, especially the private ones,
have a typical "sing-song" style with young female DJs. Very
characteristic.

Re: [IRCA] TP Reception from Victoria, BC for 12 Sept 2016

2016-09-12 Thread R. Colin Newell
Walt likely picked the weakest day of the previous 5 days.

I, too, got up around 12:50 for around 10 minutes and the band was clearly
sleepier
than I was. Oddly 1287 was rocking pretty solid as were the standard
suspects.

Most notable was low modulation English on 756 -- assuming Auckland.

There has been some new houses built within around 400' of my house
and apart from the occasional buzz, there has been no significant uptick in
noise.

Is there any other hobby that has such an awesome collection of older dudes
who serve in the public interest, often becoming ham radio operators to
serve their neighbours even more that are totally at the mercy of some
new neighbour moving in with a plasma TV or wireless over power interface
that completely trashes their efforts?

This is the most unique of hobbies.

[IRCA] TP Reception from Victoria, BC for 12 Sept 2016

2016-09-12 Thread Walter Salmaniw
I actually got up early today to listen to the bands, from 13:15 to 13:57
as a type this. Results were mixed. Pretty average all around, but with
too much domestic splatter to hear much content. Plenty of threshold
audios, and only a few with poor/fair audio. A mixture of DU and Asian
signals. Paltry dawn enhancement. As I type this, 1116 is there from
Australia, with weak audio. Also 1098 had a decent signal, but no
modulation, it seems. So here are my results:

Fair to good reception:594 JJ, 612 Australia, 675 English, 738 Tahiti
(good at times), 1566 HLAZ

Poor to fair: 756 (English),1116 English, 1386: not sure who. EZL music
at 13:35, so not Radio Tarana. Also 1107, 774

Threshold: 603, 765, 828, 864, 909, 1008, 1098, 1143, 1251, 1332, 1575.

Nil in the X-band.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-12

2016-09-12 Thread d1028gary
Asian propagation dropped off significantly this morning as only a few big gun
TP's managed to come up with any real energy. A dreary band in the predawn
darkness didn't get much of a sunrise enhancement boost, and the second-tier
Asians stayed down in the noise.

Early on at 1310 only 747-JOIB, the 1053-Jammer and 1566-HLAZ had much strength
(fair to good), while the usual Japanese big guns on 594, 693, 774 and 828 were
sounding anemic. The second-tier Asians which had been so numerous over the
weekend (on 603, 657, 738, 936 and other frequencies) stayed at weak carrier
level, and the only somewhat positive note was a fair signal from 1575-VOA late
on around 1325. 1134-JOQR also came up in strength to a fair level around the
same time, but overall the session was pretty mediocre. Best signals
(temporarily good) were from the 1053-Jammer and 1566-HLAZ around 1315.
