Re: [IRCA] Cape Lookout Oregon non-DX Overview - Oct. 31-Nov. 2

2016-11-11 Thread Guy Atkins
Hi Nick,

The conclusions were inconclusive, LOL!

The bulk of the so-called experiments involved observing phasing results
with close spacing (approx. 70 feet between antennas). Andrew Ikin of
Wellbrook has said repeatedly to me and Dave that his phaser design
requires a minimum of 40 meters spacing to work effectively. However, Dave
had the Quantum Phaser along, and he knew we could get *some* results at
closer spacing but with a limited bandwidth. We did not have a Wellbrook
phasing unit with us this trip.

Dave found that he could indeed get decent nulls (loop vs loop, or loop vs
vertical) at 70 feet, but unfortunately the desired DX signal strength
dropped along with the nulled station! That's the main takeaway that I
remember from our work, which granted wasn't very scientific. Too bad you
weren't along, Nick, as I know you'd keep us in line and help us reduce
variables and banish wishful thinking :^)

73,

Guy

[IRCA] Final Report # 5 from Murray Harbour North, PEI

2016-11-11 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Well, things are winding down. This afternoon and evening, we DX'd using
solely the remaining Superloop antenna, which, despite it's small
dimensions, still provided some really interesting DX. Here are my final
loggings for the trip, as we all return to our homes tomorrow. 73, Walt
Salmaniw

828 SOUTH AFRICA Klipheuwel 25 kW Magic 828, Nov 11 2138 - Thanks to Nick
Hall-Patch for alerting all of us to Celine Dion singing, and sure enough,
// to the internet feed, and followed by Dan Hill's Sometimes When We
Touch. A difficult copy, but the songs are readilly copyable. I tried
very hard yesterday to hear this one, and thought at one point that I might
have had them, but not conclusively. Here's the proof! Thanks again,
Nick! By 21:45 faded down to be replaced by UK's Smooth Radio.
(Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

837 IRAN Esfahan 400 kW IRIB Radio Esfahan, Nov 11 2029 - Happened to be
parked on the channel (looking for Ukraine), and a choral anthem started.
Followed by the infamous gong at 20:30, confirming this to be Iran. Very
strong. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

1035 IRAN Yazd 100 kW IRIB Radio Yazd, Nov 11 2002 - Nice ID heard for
Radio Yazd. Sounds like a childrens program or a story told to a young
child. Was very strong! Not bad for a super loop antenna, the sole
remaining antenna at our DXpedition site, now that the fabulous DKAZ and
Beverage has been taken in. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

1206 ? GREECE Athens Radio Babis (tent), Nov 12 0233 - Highly tentative.
We battled with this frequency all evening. Never very strong, but would
occasionally rise. Mostly non-stop music, but with occasional speech,
including a very brief mention a few minutes ago. The style to me of
broadcasting is very much Greek pirate, but have no idea to be honest.
I'll post the brief audio clip at RealDX and see if anyone has any ideas.
I tried the UTwente SDR but nothing heard there on repeated attempts, and
apparently also not heard on an Italian SDR site. A mystery!.
(Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

1278 UKRAINE Petrivka 100 kW Radio Ukraine International, Nov 11 2040 - The
best heard during this DXpedition. 1270 is a local station which splatters
a lot, but this afternoon, with our most modest antenna, reception is
actually good at times, and clearly // to 1431 in Russian, so it's not the
1st domestic program, but the external service to Crimea in Russian. Vlad
Titarev tells me as well that it's 1 minute out of sync with 1431, so not
to be fooled. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

1395 ALBANIA Filake 500 kW TWR Europe, Nov 11 2116 - Very strong reception
in listed Serbian, with a certain amount of splatter from adjacent
channels. Clearly religious in nature. Clean audio. No cochannel
interference at all. Measured on slightly off frequency of 1394.950.
(Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

1593 ROMANIA Radio Romania Actualitati (tent), Nov 11 2026 - I'm not clear
which Romanian this might be. 4 transmitters are listed: SRR Radio Cluj
in Oradea with 15 kW, SRR Radio Romania Actualitati with 15 kW in Ion
Corvin, SRR Radio Targu Mures with 15 kW from Miercurea Ciuc, and SRR Radio
Cluj with 10 kW from Sibiu. In any case, we found a huge number of
parallel frequencies: 1530, 1458, 1422, 1332, 1179, 1152, 855 and 711!
Some very strong, but most cochannel. Apparently a World Cup qualifying
game between Poland vs Romania. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

1635 HOLLAND Europirate Monte Carlo Radio, Nov 11 2320 - Just ID'd in Dutch
at good level. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

1677 SPAIN La Coruna La Coruna Coast Guard Radio., Nov 11 2311 - Just
signing off in Spanish at good/very good level with maritime weather. I
believe there is an error in the MWList, as it only list Cabo de Penas
Radio, but clearly the ID was for La Coruna, and verified by some on-line
marine radio guides checked. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

1530 SAO TOME PRINCIPE Pinheira 600 kW VOA, Nov 11 2051 - Excellent
reception with their English to Africa feed, confirmed on-line. Within a
minute, faded down to be briefly replaced with Romania with the
Poland/Romania soccer elimination match. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

6949 PIRATE North American Pirate Pee Wee Radio, Nov 12 0159 - Tuned in at
01:50 to good reception playing modern guitar music, followed by Kryptonite
with Three Doors Down. Reported it to the HF Underground. Dead air for
about a minute, but back at 02:01:30. Not really my style of music, but
always nice to hear a pirate broadcaster. Good reception. Measured on
6949.75 USB. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

2016-11-11 Thread Nigel Pimblett
To borrow Gary's terminology, this morning would rate as a
clunker. No Asians at all, and just traces from DU. Quite a number of
carriers actually, but most pretty feeble. Today's audio:

1116	4BC	Brisbane, AUSTRALIA	Managed to barely reach audio a couple of
times, with talk noted at 1357 and again at 1409.

1611unIDTraces of woman singing at 1413.

Carriers that reached decent levels at various times:

[IRCA] Murray Harbour North, PEI DXpedition report # 4

2016-11-11 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Yesterday afternoon started with a bang, but deteriorated into the evening
as a CME disrupted the earth's ionosphere. Couple that with some antenna
issues, led to an early cessation of DXing. Nonetheless, I enjoyed DXing
the X-band for Europirates and some of the marine services as well as a
quick look at the LW band. Here are my results. 73, from PEI. Walt
Salmaniw

153 ROMANIA Brasov 200 kW SRR Antena Satelor, Nov 10 2314 - Good reception
with slow piano accompanying a female singer. Antena Satelor ID given.
(Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

162 FRANCE Allouis 2000/1000 kW France Inter, Nov 10 2316 - Superb
reception with American blues program. Hear they're closing at the end of
the year. Too bad, as it puts out a great signal!. (Salmaniw,Murray
Harbour PEI)

171 MOROCCO Nador 1600 kW Medi 1, Nov 10 2317 - Superb reception with
modern western music. SW // of 9575 is just audible. French DJ.
(Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

183 GERMANY Felsberg 2000 kW Europe 1, Nov 10 2321 - Very good reception in
French with a couple of female announcers with light banter. Some splatter
from Iceland on 189. Not quite as strong as the lower channels.
(Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

189 ICELAND Gufuskalar 300 kW RUV Ras 1, Nov 10 2323 - Live transmission of
a rock concert. 'Come to our show tonight. Come again tomorrow night.
This was our first record'. Not // to 207 (or at least not heard).
Continued to 00:00 (John Fogerty concert). Finished with Rolling by the
River. Back into Icelandic programming. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

198 UNITED KINGDOM Droitwich 500 kW BBC Radio 4, Nov 10 2329 - Good
reception with an American comedy parody about the elections. A bit
distorted, and wondering whether it's due to multiple transmitters on
channel. 4 listed, with 2 at 50 kW and 1 at 500 kW (other being only 40
w). (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

207 MOROCCO Azilal Demnate 400 kW SNRT Al Idaa Al-Watania, Nov 10 2333 - No
sign of Iceland, and just Morocco with Arabic chanting. Very strong.
(Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

225 POLAND Solec Kujawski 1000 kW Polskie Radio Jedynka (1st Program), Nov
10 2235 - Only fair reception, so wondering whether it's poor LW
propagation or a much weaker sender. I can recognize Polish, but not much
else about the content tonight. Actually, I switched over to our 2000'
Beverage/BOG and the reception is superb now! (23:09 UTC). (Salmaniw,Murray
Harbour PEI)

234 LUXEMBOURG Beidweiler 1500 kW RTL, Nov 10 2334 - Was very strong 30
minutes ago, but deteriorated since then to fair/good only.
(Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

252 ALGERIA Tipaza 1500/750 kW Chaine 3, Nov 10 2339 - Very powerful with
drumming music (Chaine 3 is their French network). Couldn't hear 837 at
this time, but parallel to their website at:
http://www.radioalgerie.dz/chaine3/. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

252 IRELAND Clarkestown 150/60 kW RTE Radio 1, Nov 10 2336 - Good reception
with EZL vocals, but cochannel much stronger Algeria!. (Salmaniw,Murray
Harbour PEI)

828 IRAN Tabas 50 kW IRIB Sedaye Khorasan-e Jonubi, Nov 10 2217 - A
presumed logging. I was told that the TOH in Iran is on the half-hour, but
no time pips or anything heard, but clearly mentions of Iran, and the
modulation 'sounds like Iran'. Learning fast out here! Fair receptions.
Entertaining hopes of hearing Magic 828 out of South Africa. About an hour
ago, I was hearing someone in English who might have said Magic FM, but
more likely one of the UK stations. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

837 UNID Unid, Nov 10 2132 - Having trouble on this frequency. Very
strong, but also at least 1 or 2 other cochannels. I had assumed Iran, but
nothing happened at the bottom of the hour. Just kept talking in a Middle
Eastern language. Later, Spain dominated. I started all of this by
listening for Ukraine!. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

1089 UNITED KINGDOM Multiple sites TalkSPORT, Nov 10 1903 - Already strong
at 3:00 PM local, with multiple transmitters not quite in sync, so
producing an interesting echo effect. 8 sites noted between 40 watts up to
400 kW. // 1053 is marred by Libya cochannel and off frequency, 1071 is
very weak, as is 1107 (with cochannels). (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

1494 UK PIRATE Laser Hot Hits, Nov 10 2215 - I suspect this answers the
unid I had a few days ago on 1494. I had thought it might be Nonstop 90s
from Ireland, but it was pointed out that they were off the air, so must
have been LHH. Very strong this afternoon. I even dropped them a line,
since they were asking for reception reports. Last few minutes, might be
having some transmitter issues, as there have been drop outs.
(Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

1521 SPAIN Castellon 5 kW SER Radio Castellon, Nov 10 2147 - No sign of
Saudi Arabia tonight. Instead, superb reception of Radio Castellon with
local programming. Radiocastellon.com, etc. Incredible signal for only 5
kW!. (Salmaniw,Murray Harbour PEI)

1615 HOLLAND Mike Radio, Nov 10 2020 - Very good reception from

[IRCA] not TP in PEI

2016-11-11 Thread Nicholas Hall-Patch
We could hear the effects of the latest geomagnetic burp last evening, as
Spain became more dominant as the evening wore on, drowning TalkSport on
1053 for a short while as an example.

And this morning, not even the slightest hint of activity from Asia or
Australia in PEI. Even the sunrise British signals were undernourished,
only occasionally delivering weak audio. But heck, we shouldn't be
hearing them anyway.

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] Silver Linings

2016-11-11 Thread Michael Yule
Hmmm..

Well it appears that an unexpected benefit of using banana plugs rather than
BNC connectors in DKAZ construction is that when a deer runs amok at the
antenna with enough force to snap 14 ga hard drawn copper, it simply pulls
the banana plugs out rather than completely destroys the connector at the
box.

Alright, I'm reaching here.

:-)

Regards,

Michael

[IRCA] Eastern Beverage update

2016-11-11 Thread Patrick Martin
Hi Everyone,

I am pleased with my reconstruction of the Eastern Beverage. It seems much like
it was several years ago. Many frequencies are in a jumble. 740 is pretty
dominant Toronto. I checked and KSL is local-like, so I hooked the beverage up
to the Sony, and nearly immediately KSL locked into HD. I wonder if they are
still running 1%. Conditions seem to be good tonight, but even last night the
dial seemed more alive from the East than I had heard in several years. Maybe I
need to repair it more often.hi.

Re: [IRCA] Propagation favoring Latin America

2016-11-11 Thread Richard N Allen
The unusual propagation conditions have diminished in intensity from earlier
today (GMT) with the K-index dropping from five down to two.
