Re: [IRCA] Korean Peninsula AM FM SW changes
Some additional info on the Korean changes: * 97.8 is back on the air in Haeju, loud and clear. * 97.0 has a weak but steady signal in southwest Seoul. * 92.8 new Pyongyang Broadcasting affiliate is jammed on new station 92.8 Seoul. * 103.7 is still jammed in Seoul, but with the north seemingly changing their whole FM band to even numbers, unknown if it will start up again in Haeju. It seems to have been off for some time. North Korea did much the same a year ago. The whole country turned on full-power on New Year's Day as the south scrambled to set up jammers for it. But this is a major radio overhaul up there, mostly concentrated along the border and Seoul suburbs. -Chris Kadlec Seoul AM Radio Listening Guide Date: Fri, 23 Dec 2016 14:21:27 +0900 From: "Chris Kadlec" Subject: [IRCA] Korean Peninsula AM FM SW changes AM, FM, and SW happenings in Seoul - it's a bit of a mess, all of it occurring on December 21st: KOR 684 Goyang & Hwaseong have turned off. Foul up on recording software this morning, so not much to show for it. The signal strength monitor looked like the emphasis was on low band Asian big guns plus 612 even until after 1500UT. Did manage to record the sign off music box of NHK2 on 747, 774 and 828 at 1543UTrather unexpected under the geomagnetic circumstances. best wishes, Nick ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Making 3.5 Hz SAH = 210/minute. At 0531 UT, KDKA makes it thru with ID and CBS News Update. AM Switch in NRC DX News post-dated Dec 26 reports: ``STAs granted: 1020, KCKN NM Roswell – Granted STA with U4(?) 1000/1000; bad tubes in main transmitter`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1857, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. 1130, Dec 21 at 0524 UT, S9+40 signal in silly sports talk, overcoming KMOX IBOC circa 1133. Playing ``Spanish Flea`` song in background. Must be KWKH Shreveport LA on 50 kW ND day pattern, much more signal than we normally get at night when it`s supposed to be a wide blob centered on SSW, essentially nothing to the north (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. 1250, Dec 21 at 0519 UT, strange rappish song of syllables, including ``konichiwa`` a couple times, but not sure rest is Japanese; then songs in Spanish and English, but more than one station mixing. 0521 UT fades in strange language again, 0522 UT Spanish announcement re navidad, and English ad for tickets at Little Rock Center, a venue? Or Little Rock Central, referring to the notorious historic high school? So I will tentatively ID this one as KPZK, 2000/1200 watts U4, UC:AC format from Little Rock AR, per NRC AM Log (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. 1480, Dec 20 at 1355 UT, KBXD Dallas, Radio Salam Namaste W&M chattering in Hinglish, something about banana chips (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. 1590, Dec 20 at 0513 UT, HPRN Sports report, including a Nazarene girls` team, forecast hi today 56, lo 29 (obviously stale from previous morning hours), fishing license PSA, 0515 UT High Plains Radio Network, AM 1590. Also a low audible het (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) == UNIDENTIFIED. 2520, Dec 19 at 1348 UT, S6 carrier with some fading to S5, no modulation audible which ought to be, if any; 1355-1402 UT monitored continuously in case about to sign-on. Likely a second harmonic, and Tim Tromp in West Michigan had just reported yesterday to the harmonics yg: ``WOCO on 2520 (2 x 1260), Strong signal right now on 2520 // to 1260 kHz (also heard here) and confirmed with a clear TOH ID at 1300 UT with local talk and Christmas music``. Rx: mostly DX-398 with internal antenna only or PL-880; NRD-545 with ALA-330S inside E-W or inside randomwire N-S; Nissan stock caradio as specified; ICR-75 E-W longwire ** KOREA SOUTH [and non]. 1566, Dec 19 at 1339, carrier looping NW on the DX-398 with internal antenna only, and at last I can pull some audio: talk, maybe Korean? and piano music. Could also get the carrier at 1343 but no audio on the R-75 with E-W longwire. At 1345 weaker, no audio audible. It`s FEBC, HLAZ from Jeju (Cheju) Island, 250 kW. WRTH 2016 shows 1345 is the time it transitions from Japanese to Chinese, no doubt also antenna change correlating with signal drop here, altho it`s already just after sunrise. Aoki also shows those times but no azimuth info. A few minutes earlier, I had sought TP carriers on lowband, 774 etc., but none audible. Then checked NK MW/low SW frequencies and found 2850 to be S7 at 1347, 3250 also audible, but nothing unusual (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1857, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** KOREA SOUTH. 1566 kHz, Dec 20 at 1339 I`m chasing again FEBC, HLAZ Jeju Island, and there it is looping NW, 1342 music, and I am listening with offset BFO for a carrier break, which happens for a few seconds at 1344:34 as the beam is being changed from Japan to China. Distance from the 250 kW station is 10995 km or 6832 statute miles (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1857, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** COSTA RICA. 2859.82, Dec 9 at 0019, JBA carrier. Suspected to be R. San Carlos, 2 x 1430v, as tipped by Tim Tromp in MI the night before: ``For those interested in DXing medium wave harmonics, we have one right now on 2859.8 kHz: Spanish language with a *very* tentative ID caught at 2300 UT TOH that sounded like "Radio San Carlos" (Costa Rica), which would be 1430 x 2. Fair and steady carrier but weak modulation that seems to come and go. Still there at 0017. A quick search of Glenn Hauser posts reveals Radio San Carlos has been reported on 2859.8 in past years. 73, (Tim Tromp, West Michigan, Perseus + D-KAZ aimed due South, Dec 7-8, IRCA via DXLD)`` I had several logs of it in 2009-2010y but not since! At that time it was signing off circa 0200. I scan the 2 MHz band almost every night for harmonix, but none heard in a long time now. Where has this been, and why is it back now? WRTH 2016 shows 3 kW on 1430 from Ciudad Quesada, TIRVDC, at 11-03 UT. 2859.82, Dec 10 at 0128, no signal from presumed R. San Carlos second harmonic like last night. 2859.82, Dec 11 at 0132, nothing detectable from R. San Carlos. OK, enough non-logs. I will keep checking and certainly report if a carrier reshow here. Has Tim Tromp or anyone else heard it again since his original tentative log Dec 7 at 2300, and mine Dec 9 at 0019? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1856, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** COSTA RICA. Re Harmonic alert: Radio San Carlos (Tent) 1430 x 2 --- Just an update on this one, I'm noting a weak carrier on 2859.8 right now at 2253 UT 12/14/2016. Threshold audio at best on peaks, presumed to be from the same station. Best on my South D-KAZ. 73, (Tim Tromp, West Michigan, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) 2859.82, Dec 16 at 0016, JBA music, tentative R. San Carlos, 2 x 1430v. It`s less than the noise level of S9+10 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Pacific JBA MW carrier search Dec 20, UT: 1098-west at 1336, presumed V7AB Marshall Islands; only other is 1566, see KOREA SOUTH (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Pacific JBA MW carrier search December 22, UT: 666-NW at 1333. Altho it loops appropriately for Japan or China, also seems a bit unstable, so may be a birdie. No others in complete bandscan, not even 1566, except: 1098-W at 1336, surely the usual V7AB Marshall Islands, probably a bihour after programming ceased, carrier staying on (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) --- End Message --- ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@har

Re: [IRCA] MMTC To Trump: Decommission AM Band
I can only try to explain this by pointing back to the minimal minority ownership in FM and TV, because at least some of the problems they're citing to justify making AM go away also apply to FM, such as competition from other media. That, by itself, is the single largest issue for terrestrial broadcasting, period. While there are varying effects between AM, FM & TV the number one issue remains the same for all broadcast services long term. And those other services likely include things we don't even know about yet.
