Re: [IRCA] 1521 China into Michigan tonight!

2017-11-06 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA

Congratulations Tim!

I think that you will have other good possibilities there when the auroral
"doughnut hole" gets large enough to support paths to Asiatic Russia, India,
Bangladesh, Pakistan (+ other "stans"), other China etc. right over the pole.

Neil Kaz will probably have a go at it (especially from Grafton, WI).
Minnesota DXers, at least Beverage-equipped ones, too I'd think.

So far here 1521 is Saudi and/or Spain. China, when on 1525 in the '70s, got
to MA, NY, NJ, and PA. No logs around here lately but maybe that will change.

Mark Connelly, WA1ION
South Yarmouth, MA

<<
After reading recent reports that China was logged by Allen Willie in
Newfoundland and the PEI gang, I thought I'd pay closer attention to 1521
during the early evening hours. Patience paid off tonight when I caught
some faint Russian talk and music beginning around 00:30 UTC. I was able
to parallel what I was hearing in real-time to a Kiwi remote SDR located in
Novosibirsk, Russia (roughly 1000km north of Urumqi) that had a strong copy
on the same signal. Despite not catching an ID on the remote receiver, I'm
fairly confident that I had CRI, which would be a new country here.
Honestly, I never thought to look for China at this hour until reading the
reports mentioned above.

Here in Alberta south I have a fair number of carriers, but nearly all
are very weak.  Only 1413 and 1575 have any substance, and they're still
a fair way from audio.   Interestingly I did have two carriers on 1098
earlier on, one on frequency and the other about 15 Hz low.   No trace
of either now (0245).

[IRCA] Portugal / pips

2017-11-06 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
Portugal should be an easy country since there is not much land along the route
to coastal North America. The route is often enough away from the auroral zone
that signals can slide through even though absorption significantly reduces
stations from northern and eastern Europe.

Certainly adjacent Spain is well represented on the dial most early evenings
here, so what about Portugal?

Those of you who DX'ed from the eastern US and Canada in the '70s remember
booming signals from 665/666 (old plan / new plan), 719/720, 755/756, 782/783,
1034/1035, and others. 719 and 755 were car radio regulars for me during
sunset homeward commutes on Boston's elevated Central Artery (that was later
buried as the Big Dig / Tip O'Neill Tunnel).

What happened since is that the power levels of most Portuguese stations were
downgraded significantly. Some, like 1035, a former blaster, went dark
altogether.

I did have a fair opening that way on 2 NOV at 2200 UTC. Reviewing my
recordings I found a fair-peaks signal on 666:
https://app.box.com/s/gfhbobg66dh4d64yggos2l072iz018bq

Top-of-hour time pips are "4+1", in this case four longer ones and one short
one. These are lower in pitch than the "5+1" (five shorter and one longer)
pips characteristic of many other stations, most notably the RNE Spain
affiliates.

Parallels on 630 and 720 were also logged at that time.

630 has the 4+1 pips under WPRO.
https://app.box.com/s/pw0jue7nex3cqkaxggbderf4j1rpy9md

On 720, it's kind of noisy but the pips stand out.
https://app.box.com/s/zm37wdsd3toh3k4ye23flqqigxhl5c5e

Interestingly on 720 an hour earlier, the 5+1 higher pitch pips of RNE Canary
Islands predominated. The same results for RNE Canaries at 2100 UTC and
Portugal at 2200 UTC repeated several other nights on 720. Since there is no
serious 720 domestic activity until WGN and occasionally WRZN start coming up
after 2200 UTC, that channel is kind of a free-fire zone for international DX
from about an hour before sunset until after 2200 UTC / 5 p.m. EST. The demise
of CHTN is a gift that keeps giving.

The Portugal synchros on 630, 666, and 720 have 10 kW as maximum power. This
is quite a bit less than what these stations were running 40 years ago. That's
why nothing coming out of there, in the present state of things, will compare
in strength with the big honkers from Spain such as 684 and 855.

Re: [IRCA] West Coast TA nite?

2017-11-06 Thread Steve

Thanks for the tip!

Hopefully something will come of it. It looks like the Bz is also starting
to go south tonight so perhaps that coronal hole crud has arrived a tad
early. There often seems to be a bit of enhancement just as these
disturbances get under way for some reason.

[IRCA] Question re ELAD FDM S2 and Macbook

2017-11-06 Thread Saul Chernos
I've settled on the ELAD FDM-S2 SDR. I've decided not to wait any longer for the
S3 mainly because I anticipate it will be expensive, and I'm happy to capture a
good-size segment of the FM band rather than the whole thing. The S2 is tried
and proven by quite a few of you, and I'm good with that.

That said, I want to use my current work Macbook Pro for this. And buy a new
Macbook for work and personal use. Problem is, I have not heard of anyone
running the ELAD FDM-S2 on the Mac platform.

ELAD tells me, somewhat cryptically, that "You can try to install a virtual
machine under Mac Osx, example Bootcamp or Vmware fusion and download a sample
of our software to give it try. Please let me know if that will work."

This isn't entirely convincing - I am not terribly computer-savvy and am not
sure from their wording to me if they are 100% certain it will work. I hate to
buy another computer if it won't do the job. As a last resort I would buy a PC.
Perhaps, in that case, a lower-end PC.

Any advice? is there anyone out there that has successfully and easily hooked
the ELAD FDM S2 to a Macbook?

audio in and out under the 1520 slop, but I'm unable to ID it since the

The saga continues for 690. Now running an OC but this is also the same
pattern as before when trying to run 24hrs.
Jihn, I believe those calls were KMAP. George and I found their transmitter
hidden in the hills of Newport on the SE corner of 494/61. It was a waste
of airwaves indeed.

Probably the best conditions in the
last couple of weeks - which is not
 saying much -
But still feeling like something of an
 upside down season -

Here is a video of one of the
stand-outs: Korea on 972 Khz on the W/NW Flag

 https://youtu.be/3BBBZ02iSnU

The "sensitive" end of the FLAG is only
around 20' away from my neighbours
house so I am kind of at the mercy of
what ever wall-wart he has plugged in
 AND
he is installing a heat pump in a few
weeks SO FINGERS CROSSED that it does
 not
become yet another noise source - My
neighbour to the NE has a solar array
on his roof that, during the day,
blaffs out a huge buzz every 100 khz
between 13 Mhz and 30 Mhz - at night -
 pretty much all quiet.

Anyway - it was "Fair to at times good"
today with audio starting at 558
khz and working up pretty much every
"fairly clear" 9 khz split (away from
the splashers...) all the way up to
1593 with an odd gap between 1400 and
1500 khz - the video shows the screen
 grabs from the Hall-Patch radar.

 https://youtu.be/3BBBZ02iSnU

Good audio on all the top tier Japanese
NHK stations - lots of tier two
 commercial JJ stations
as well as some North Koreans and 2nd
tier South Koreans in the mix: 558,
 603, 621, 819, 855...

1053 Khz was large but with a combo of
Japanese and Korean and no sign of
 the jammer whatsoever.

So - curious to see what everyone else
 heard.

When DXing from SW Minneapolis in the early 1990s, KUSD was still on the air.
I was southeast of the tx of the 690 Mpls Station (different call, same
pattern), in their main lobe and still able to null them to almost nothing and
hear KUSD very well. Another piece of trivia; any one remember the Twin Cities
station on 1370 that went dark in the early 80s? Never could figure the reason

 Novosibirsk, Russia (roughly 1000km
north of Urumqi) that had a strong copy
on the same signal.  Despite not
catching an ID on the remote receiver, I'm
fairly confident that I had CRI, which
would be a new country here.
Honestly, I never thought to look for
China at this hour until reading the
 reports mentioned above.

Re: [IRCA] 1521 China into Michigan tonight!

2017-11-06 Thread Sylvain Naud

Congrats Tim on that great catch!

Almost at the same time, I also joined the Urumqui party. Here's an
extract at 00:39 UTC with a man in Russian:

And taking advantage of an open Northern path, I gave a go for India on
1071 and here it was at 00:54 UTC with man in presumed Urdu:

If you were recording a bit earlier, you might try for 1098. There's a
1000Kw transmitter in Golmud CHN that also reaches here from time to time.
