[IRCA] Ordered a Radio

2017-11-30 Thread Michael Yule
Hi all - after reviewing the options I've ordered a Sangean PR D15 to
use with the FSL. I had narrowed it down to the Tecsun 660 or 880, the
Sangean, the CCrane 2E, and the Sony EX5MK2 and based on weak signal
handling capability decided on the Sangean. In second place was the
analog dial Sony, which reportedly also has great weak signal capability
on MW. I really wanted to like the Tecsuns more, especially the 880 'cuz
it looks so flash and it has SSB and a bunch of bandwidths, but the
reviews and comments from users convinced me that it wasn't the one for
me, although no doubt it's a great little radio. I just needed an
emphasis on great MW signal handling. I would have chosen the Sony
except for a potential intermod problem and the analogue dial would have
been a lot less friendly for ensuring I was on the frequency I wanted to
be on (or that I thought I was on). I chose the PR D15 over the PR D5
because of the fine tuning on the former, but it meant that I had to
order it from North America as the 15 isn't available in Europe as far
as I can tell.

It's going to be an interesting experience for me going from the ELAD to
the Sangean, from unlimited bandwidths to 1, from ECSS, SSB, Sync etc to
AM only. It'll be like going back to my first real receiver when I was a
lad of 14, the Grundig Satellit 6001, although with that I had the
external SSB unit!

Michael Yule

Hi Craig - I didn't know you could use LMR400 with the Wellbrook amp

thought that it was unique to that unit. If you do end up giving it a

Re: [IRCA] Pat Martin

2017-11-30 Thread Patrick Martin

Hi Everyone,

Yes, indeed I am alive and well. As Bill stated, something in the neighborhood
has shown up in the past few years that really knocks out the dial. I feel it
is not the power lines, but something else. Even though the area has
underground power, there are still neighbors close enough and anything can
cause the noise. I couple weeks ago I did have one day without the noise and
the power was on. A lot of older people live in the area too and any could have
a medical device that could cause the noise. Plus Pot is now legal in Oregon so
dryers and other noise makers could be the cause. I attended the Reno
convention this year and had a great time. I am still very much interested in
the hobby, but I may have to wait until the dial gets quieter. I got a good
gain FM Yagi from Germany, via Les and it works quite nicely for FM, so it
still is not MW. I do a lot of streaming too. People around here move and pass
on, it is just a matter of time when the dials gets more quiet. That is if
I live that long. hi. I just I have to add that in there, as I will be 69 in
March, but as others can attest I am still in good shape. Hopefully I will stay
that way for a while. Thanks for asking.

Re: [IRCA] Alberta TPs for 27 November 2017

2017-11-30 Thread Chris Kadlec
There’s not a lot to be heard in East Asia on 1584, at least nothing of
significant power. There are two 10kw stations in China and only one is within
usual range of you. You have the Heilongjiang station that is Korean-language
and then you have three 1kw stations in South Korea (two were normal for me,
both just slightly out of sync), a lot of 100 watters in Japan – all NHKs – and
another lower-powered one in North Korea..

Naturally, you’d just hear enough audio to know it’s there but not enough to
know what it is.

The most interesting morning in a while here today, though all the
interest was in the very top end of the band.

1503JOUKAkita, JAPANFair, with woman in Japanese at 1440.

1566HLAZJeju, S,KOREA Poor with man in Japanese at 1437. A second,
reasonably substantial carrier at times on about 1566.035 was also noted.

1575VOA THAILANDPresumed the one with music at 1438

1584unIDJust into audio with traces of talk observed at 1438. Also
second carrier noted at 1583.96.

1593CNR1Changzhou, CHINA Fair, with woman in Chinese at 1439. Like
yesterday, audible to just past 1500.

I've never had a definite Asian log on 1584, and indeed even any audio
there is a rare event. "Almost there" carriers also noted on 1386,
1422, 1548, and 1557.
Today a check showed that reception in Lamont was pretty much identical
to here.

This was the 1440-Kiribati sign off routine at 0929 UTC on April 11th of this
year, as recorded in Kona, Hawaii. The station has a distinctive 1000 Hz tone
at the end of transmission around 0936, which cuts through QRM like a DXer's
dream. This recording helped a DXer in Japan ID the station for the first time.

Pat, has did very little DXing in the last few years due to a very high noise
level. Also he has been in one location for a long time and it was getting very

How long has Kiribati been off 846? I never knew they left it.

Kiribati does 1 hour a day in English playing country music, and then the
rest of their day is their mother younger... it sounds a bit Asian to my
ears

I have some locally made englis language airchecks of Radio Kiribati

Re: [IRCA] Florence

2017-11-30 Thread Mauno Ritola

Hi Michael,
for very temporary setups I have applied the simplest possible approach:
tried to find a relatively noise-free place and antenna consisted of
min. 10 metres of coax to get away from one's computer noise, a matching
transformer, a simple ground stick and antenna wire as long as possible,
at least tens of metres either on the ground or hung somewhere. Then
wide-band recording by SDR (operated by a phone battery) and listening
later.

Best regards,

Mauno

Hey Nick, it's good to hear from you! It's funny that you sent me this
because I was scheming in the back of my brain trying to figure out
what I would use as a frame and the idea of fibreglass tent poles came
into my head, I was going to look for possibilities today. So very
timely!

I probably won't be going full on DKAZ, at least yet, unless I am
doing a 'proper' dxpedition. For my little mini ones I would use the
frame to support something like Mark showed me in his email. This
source is a big help, though, thanks.

I hope all is well - I thought that I'd missed your daily DX reports

Kind regards,

If you want to get into bigger antennas at remote sites, Michael,
maybe look at a mini-pole to support either a delta loop or a KAZ
terminated loop.    Two of them could allow a small DKaz.

https://www.sotabeams.co.uk/mini-telescopic-fiberglass-poles/

These are quite small when telescoped.  I traveled on the train with
one in a small suitcase.  I borrowed it from Satoshi Miyauchi in
Japan, and it is thanks to him that I even heard about it.  You can
also get a "stake kit", also quite small, that can support that pole.

best wishes,

Nick

with it, as I can't couple it directly to my ELAD. I think I've
narrowed the choice down to either a Tecsun 660 or a Sony EX5MK2,
and I will take the bus about 20 minutes to the hills outside of the
city, a small town called Fiesole where I think reception will be
much better than in town here. We aren't going to buy a car as there
really isn't any need to apart from mini DXpeditions as everything
in the city is in walking range and if we are going on a longer trip
that needs a car we'll rent one. Most places can be reached though
through the excellent public transport available. That being said, I
have been considering ways of trying to make a foldable version of
your broadband loop so I can bring the ELAD and do some broadband
captures, which is what I'd also really like to do. Is there any way
I can use my existing FLG100 with this rather than having to
construct the amplifier? I'd like to use as many existing parts as
possible. I sent myself the FLG, the transformers I used for the
CAT5 and one of Colin's Vactrols from Nova Scotia before I left
along with a couple of toroids and some other things, and they
arrived safe and somewhat sound, athough Poste Italia made me do a
lot of 'splainin what exactly I was trying to import and made me pay
an import fee.

I'm definitely going to join the groups you mentioned, thanks very
much for the tips. My Italian is developing, and I can usually make
myself understood in the present, past perfect and past imperfect
tenses, but my vocabulary is still quite weak and so English is
still very helpful. I still think in English. We have a tutor come
in 3X a week, so we're making some progress.

I will definitely post what I am hearing, and if you )or any of the
other list members are interested in having me try to assist in an
ID based on an interval signal or have me make a TOH or other ID
recording of a particular station please ask and I'll certainly help
as best I can. It will also be really interesting and not a little
unreal to consider NAm stations as 'DX'! I'll let you all know what
I hear.

[IRCA] Rockwork File Review-- 558-7BU I.D.

2017-11-30 Thread d1028gary
It's weird how you can listen to a DX station recording 10 times and not hear
any ID, but on the 11th time it suddenly jumps out at you. This recording of
classic rock ("So Lonely" by the Police) from 558-7BU (2 kW is Tasmania,
Australia) was made around 1304 on August 9th at the Rockwork 4 cliff, but
after listening to the jumble after the end of the song about 5 times I wrote
it off as undecipherable. Even after Todd Emslie of Australia said that he
heard a muffled 7BU ID by a male voice I still couldn't dig it out. After
wrapping up my own file review and hearing DXpedition partner Tom R.'s 558-7BU
MP3 with a clear ID at 1300 on 8-4 (when my own FSL antennas were not on the
558 frequency), I decided to give it another try. 558-Fiji was smothering the
frequency for most of the morning of August 9 at the cliff, and the classic
rock station could barely get in a few songs edgewise.
https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/8kkdih6ws4wx5fv73usae0f40p2z2pjr

Well, the recording's muffled "...oldies, 7BU" in the male voice at 1:07
suddenly wasn't hiding in the noise anymore. Todd was right.. I could finally
dig it out! This reminds me of a very strong DX recording on 531 made during
the August 2012 Rockwork 4 DXpedition that I puzzled over for 4 years. The
modern rock format didn't match anything I had ever heard on 531, but the
station was pounding in at an S9 level. In between songs at :53 a female voice
said something weird, but I couldn't decipher it. Paul Walker took one listen
of the MP3 and immediately pronounced it as "More FM." Paul was right-- this
2012 MP3 was apparently the first reception of the very rare 2 kW Kiwi station
on the west coast-- at an S9 level.
