Subdued DUs today.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

no

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

no

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

756 RNZ National likely, man DU English 1231UT; also woman DU English 1304UT
and into a jazz vocal

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

567 RNZ National man mumbling //756 1236UT

594 3WV // 702, improved slightly in strength after 1226UT

612 4QR, barely noted fanfare, then woman with likely "ABC News"

603 R. Waatea island vocal music //765 1216UT

675 RNZ National, man talking //567 1242UT

702 2BL woman talking //barely audible 594 1226UT

1548 4QD fanfare 1300UT, woman "ABC news" likely 1300UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged

[IRCA] Michigan AU logs: Aug.26th, 2018

2018-08-27 Thread Tim Tromp
Instead of chasing Pacific carriers Sunday morning on the western BOGs, I
found myself scrambling in the dark to get temporary feedlines setup from
the shack to the South DKAZ to take advantage of the au conditions. With
just a few minutes to spare, I managed to kickoff a spectrum recording
covering the 7am / 11:00 UTC TOH. Later review exposed a pipeline into
Texas including several new TX logs.

Receiver: Microtelecom Perseus SDR

Antenna: 117 FT D-KAZ remotely terminated and reversible aimed North/South

Location: Western Michigan

=
1280 KSLI Abilene, TX. Aug.26th,2018 1101 UTC

Very poor with weak mix of stations playing oldies and
standards, then faint but clear OM w/ calls rising above
the mix with "K-S-L-I.." and lost again immediately,
during au cx.

ANTENNA: South DKAZ 1,045 miles 500w/226w

NEW LOG TROMP-MI

AM/FM ID with calls, strong during au cx.

ANTENNA: South DKAZ 917 miles 25kw/5kw

NEW LOG TROMP-MI
=
1470 KLCL Lake Charles, LA. Aug.26th,2018 1100 UTC

Colin,

FYI the Doxytronics loop is passive, so there's no amp. It's also simple
and well-designed... I think you'd like both the circuit and construction
quality in this nice, portable loop.

[IRCA] a bit auroral (was Re: [CapeDX] International MW DX)

2018-08-27 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---

Thanks for the report Bruce. Thanks Roy too. Good to see East Coast DXing
being done. With somewhat lower static levels I suspect more will be getting
in on the action.

The capture I took a few nights back had reasonable TA activity. Last night's
and 0300 UTC captures showed an auroral trend.

Sao Tome VOA 1530 was quite good at 0259 UTC sign-on, so if anyone reading this
hasn't logged it yet, try tonight starting a couple of minutes before 11 p.m.
EDT / 0300 UTC.

Though Great Lakes area and Canadian stations weren't completely suppressed
last night, they were noticeably weakened. 740 had R. Angulo (Cuba) atop at
UTC with little evidence of CHCM or CFZM. Some of the Brazilians held in
well past typical sunset peak (they're often replaced by Colombians, Cubans, or
domestics later into the evening). At 0300 UTC, the 610 and 700 Brazilians
were still going strong, well over the other co-channel Latin Americans and
domestics. 700 had top-of-hour pips under that were likely from Argentina.

Maybe tonight we'll have a repeat.

Anyone happen to have a used but in good shape Doxytronics loop they want
to sell? Mine sat around for awhile and can't figure out whats wrong, and
it's past warranty. I may ship the controller/antenna coupler to be
fixed but I thought I'd ask around here and see if anyone had one
collecting dust they don't want anymore?

I wanna get back to some HF listening while I'm unemployed but don't have

Re: [IRCA] Loop comparisons / suggestions

2018-08-27 Thread Andrew Ikin
The ALA100 was originally designed for the NDB listener. The recommend loop
circumference of 20m was to provide an approx. loop reactance of 50 Ohm at
500kHz , this being a reasonable match to the ALA100 input z. Hence at >
1MHz to the loop reactance is higher than the ALA100 input z. Whilst this
may look like a mis-match, the loops radiation resistance is lower with a
rise in frequency, hence this gives a constant output verses field strength.
One benefit of having a higher loop reactance compared to the amp. input z
is that the loop doesn't shunt the amplifiers' feedback as much as a lower
inductance would. Therefore, there is less degradation in the amplifier
noise figure. However, this would normally not be an issue with ALA100
because the overall s/n would be set by the loop. Whereas, this starts to be
an issue with 1m dia. loops.

Therefore, making the loop larger shouldn't cause a problem. But it may not
be necessary with the new ALA100LN.

The new ALA100LN serial Nos. 200 onwards are probably over engineered in
terms of noise figure. This being approx. 0.33dB at 1MHz with a equivalent
inductance of a 20m loop. However, this does mean that the new amp. will
work well even with an 8m circumference loop. Also the new ALA100LN has a
23dB gain verses 17dB with the old ALA100s

The ALA1530LN/P head amps. are basically the same as the new ALA100LN but
with a higher gain of 26dB and a lower input z to match the 1m dia. loop.
The loop/amp. noise figure above 2MHz is approx. 0.2dB or put it another way
the noise floor is 12dB lower compared to the thermal noise of a resistor.

Valid point from Chuck. I've never had an overload problem with any of my
ALA. The FLG 100, yes. It needs the 10 dB attenuation, but the ALA 100
works fine, even with my 10 kW CFAX 1070 within 1 to 2 km from my QTH.
Never any overload. 73, Walt

[IRCA] August Rockwork Cliff DXpedition-- Overall Summary

2018-08-27 Thread Gary DeBock
A group of 5 determined DXers once again set up on the plunging Rockwork
ocean cliff on the Oregon coast near Manzanita this month, tracking down
multiple South Pacific stations-- especially those for which the Cliff is
famous for providing a potent propagation boost. This summer there was a little
added excitement thrown in as we competed with an expanded group of "sleeping
squatters" for antenna setup space, often pushing our luck by setting up in
total darkness right next to total strangers in junk vehicles at 0400 local
time. The crowded real estate forced us to spread out from the usual Rockwork 4
location to four additional turnoffs, providing not only the chance to test out
our antennas at new DXing sites, but also a chance to test out our
psychological skills in dealing with bizarre squatters having multiple issues.
"Frequent Flyer" Craig Barnes accompanied me (with his Baby FSL) to four
different turnoffs in seven days, while Nick was busy setting up relative si
gnal strength tests all around (and below) the cliff. Somehow Tom was able to
set up at Rockwork 4 during all his sessions, while Chuck seemed to alternate
between Rockwork 4, 3 and 2. There was little or no chance of DXer interaction
when set up at different turnoffs, although we usually gathered for a
debriefing session after the DU propagation had fizzled.

As usual the Rockwork cliff provided its famous "Kiwi Magic," with obscure
New Zealand stations coming out of the noise in droves. 531-More FM seemed to
have some kind of antenna upgrade as it gave PI some serious competition each
session, and both 558-Radio Sport and 576-Star sounded pretty healthy on a
couple of occasions. The extremely rare 585-Radio Ngati Porou made its first
appearance in five years, while 594-Star and 639-RNZ managed their best signals
ever. A special occasion was the S9+ appearance of the 1 kW 936-Chinese Voice
on August 3rd, surprising everybody who heard it.

After the recent antenna upgrades for both 558-Radio Fiji One and
1017-Tonga they managed to pound in with awesome signals on several occasions,
hitting S9+ peaks for their best performances ever. Several Australian stations
like 585-7RN and 639-2HC also did their best to tap into the Kiwi propagation
pipeline, and on 8-9 there was an interesting station on 855 that wasn't // 774
and whose music sure didn't sound like Rhema. During my 9-day DXpedition the
Western Australian stations were MIA for the first 8 days, and it seemed like
they might not show up at the Rockwork cliff in August for the first time in
four years. Strangely enough, on the very last day (August 9th) at 1253 558-6WA
in Wagin did manage to break through the Fiji QRM for about 40 seconds-- just
barely strong enough to get adequate material to match with the ABC website's
Podcast. Overall the DXpedition proved to be the usual, habit-forming thrill
that has made this wacky cliff a center of DU-DXing activ
ity. Tom mentioned that he once again had record-breaking Longwave NDB-DX
results from the South Pacific, NZ and Australia, while Craig certainly seemed
to be on Cloud Nine as used the cliff's propagation boost to track down
multiple DU's with his 3.5" Baby FSL. Nick , Tom, Craig and I have already made
our reservations for next August-- wild weather and sleeping squatters
notwithstanding.
