[IRCA] TP 18 Sep Victoria version.

2018-09-18 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Not like the last two mornings, but still a fair number of stations to be
heard, most things weaker, however, with a bit more Down Under also.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

594 JOAK woman in Japanese 1324UT, and many other times

747 JOIB Chinese lessons overcame the 750 splash at 1333UT

774 JOUB Chinese lessons 1320UT

828 JOBB...Chinese lessons 1318UT

873 JOGB Chinese lessons briefly at this level 1321UT

972 HLCA guitar music with voice over in Korean by man 1320UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

567 JOIK woman talking //594 1331UT

594 3WV man talking //612 1331UT; JOAK enjoying a fade down just then

612 4QR man and woman in DU English 1349UT

1566 HLAZ choral music 1323UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

603 HLSA woman talking //558 1331UT

693 JOAB Chinese lessons 1334UT

738 2NR man talking //612 1346UT

774 3LO man and woman talking //612 1319UT during JOUB fade

945 CNR1 man in Chinese 1326UT

1116 4BC man talking DU English 1339UT

1206 Yanbian woman in Korean 1323UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

531 JOQG woman talking //594 1323UT, weak but a pretty clear channel

558 HLQH 1331UT woman talking //603

846 2NR man talking //576 1346UT

891 JOHK woman talking //594 1320UT

963 woman talking, Russian intonation 1324UT

1134 man talking, Korean intonation 1320UT

1143 instrumental music mixing with a man talking 1328UT; a real mess. Both

1287 woman talking, Japanese intonation 1326UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)

I just heard a WMNI Columbus OH (95.1 & 920 AM) ID on 1520 AM at the top

suspect the usual dominant WWKB, but would they really give an ID for

Re: [IRCA] Sept 17th - Video Highlights - West Coast TP's - What was on 1368 khz?

2018-09-18 Thread Chris Kadlec
Keep in mind that the SAPPRTF lists in China only show stations licensed by the
government, which includes perhaps only half of stations that are on the air in
China. Of my usual FM stations that I could hear from my location in Korea,
maybe only about 50-60% were actually in the database, and similar with my old
AM regulars - many weren’t in the database, but far more AMs were in the
database than FMs as obviously it’s harder to go under the radar on AM than on
FM at night. The rest were operating illegally, though you and the citizens
would never know it as they are all covering large areas and are
well-established local stations with programming and advertising. Most of them
pay people off or just skirt the rules until they’re caught, and few of them
ever are. Nei Menggu usually has multiple stations on FM that aren’t in the
database, as I’ve heard them via Es with IDs, but they mostly hold licenses for
the majority of their stations.

So I guess my point is: NEVER trust the SAPPRTF database as a resource of
what’s on the air. Take the information that IS in the database as reliable but
when a station isn’t in the database, don’t assume it doesn’t exist. It usually
does. Use the station websites to confirm (if they have any) and even then,
they often don’t list their frequencies on there.

But I may be an “expert” on the ground who knows a lot, but I only know what I
could regularly hear, and Inner Mongolia is certainly not one of those areas. I
can only help out with what I have experience with. It could very well be any
Chinese station playing a song that just doesn’t match on Shazam. It’s very
possible! I wouldn’t be able to confirm either way without contacting my
Mongolian friend (I kinda don’t wanna bother him :) …)

It’s just gonna have to be one of those unsolved ones I guess aside from
knowing the general region it came from.

According to the latest SARFT list (roughly the Chinese counterpart to
the FCC list), there currently aren't any Nei Menggu stations on 1368.?
I think there was one a few years ago, but recently a major reassignment
concentrated the Nei Menggu AM stations onto about ten frequencies.?
Maybe it was a Mongolian song on a Chinese language station?

Re: [IRCA] Loop antenna question

2018-09-18 Thread Guy Atkins
Thanks for the link to Everett's mobius strip loop experiments, Nick! I
wasn't aware he's worked on any antennas buy FSLs.

Interestingly, he's discovered the "PEX AL PEX" tubing that the LZ1AQ loops
frequently use. I thought the tubing was available only in Europe, but
Everett mentions finding a supplier in the USA. With its aluminum skin and
semi-rigid plastic form, this tubing is a great basis for home brew
magnetic loops. I'd guess it's easier for hobbyists to work with than 100%
aluminum tubing.

Andrew Ikin of Wellbrook Communications, known for extensive R&D of his
antennas, published a short paper a while back which pointed out a problem
of loop-amplifier mismatch with mobius strip loops:
https://www.wellbrook.uk.com/loopantennas/pdf/ComparisonoftheMobiusLoop.pdf
I know he is not a fan of this design, despite Dr. Baum/Chris Trask's
investigations. The mobius strip approach is found in Pixel Technologies's
competing RF-PRO1A loop. (Current version is the $499.99 RF-PRO-1B
, sold by DX
Engineering.)

LZ1AQ's site is one of the best for technical info.

I have not used his products but know they are well designed.

And neither the complexity nor surface mount technology are factors for the
user: all boards are mounted and tested per the product description.

Whoa - never seen these before -- way more complex than the Wellbrook
products --
which may or may not result in better performance - but one does not know
until one tries.

Dozens and dozens of surface mount components on these boards -
I imagine the boards are pre-populated - there are only a few
of us that have the gear for doing surface mount (I have a HAKKO rework
station...)

Good value by the looks of it.

Re: [IRCA] Loop antenna question

2018-09-18 Thread Larry R Fravel
Beta testing would be great. Right now what I am actually looing for is a
smaller loop - the 30 inch hula hoop that I have and am working with. I
need some input on the number of turns of wire - size of the wire - etc.
From the loop I want to feed the loop directly to the shack with RG8-X. Any
tuning cap would need to be inside. I wasn't looking for an amplified loop
but that would be a big plus.

What I have now is the Hula Hoop wound with 8 conductor flat ribbon cable
closely spaced up 1/4 of the way up one side of the loop, then wide spaced
(the width of the cable spaced between each turn) across the top of the
loop, and then closely spaced the last quarter of the loop. The conductors
in the cable are reversed so that on the one end (cable end 1 for example)
wire number is not terminated. On cable end 2 wire number 8 is not
terminated. Then cable number one the number 2 wire in the cable goes to
wire 7 in cable number two. Wire 3 in cable end one goes to wire number 6
in cable number 2, etc., each one in series with the other. In the end the
actual length of the loop is actually 8 times the length of the cable that
was to make it. One of the free wire2 goes to the center conductor on a
piece of RG8-X that feeds my receiver, the other free wire from the loop
goes to ground.

Inside the shack I am able to receive stations 30 to 40 miles away on my
IC-7410 with no pre-amp inserted and getting an S8 reading on the strongest
one. Just holding the loop and turning it by hand does not produce a
noticeable null. I am suspecting a few things need to be done. I may need
to add capacitance to the end of the loop to tune it more (this has to be
done in the shack at the end of the feed line) and I may need more or less
windings on the actual loop. Not sure at all why am not getting any nulls.

Re: [IRCA] TP 18 Sep Victoria version Headlines.

2018-09-18 Thread Bruce Portzer
KUAU is likely the best chance for Hawaii to be heard in the upper
midwest on a loop or Beverage. It's consistently among the strongest
Hawaiians and the first to fade in during our coastal DXpeditions.
There's aren't many interference sources between the Great Lakes and the
Pacific Ocean - the Canadians are long gone, XERF is off to the side,
and the few US stations *should* be on low power.  It's at least worth
checking the channel when conditions look promising.

2018-09-18 Thread R. Colin Newell
Next in my list of projects (building a dual channel balanced Phaser at the
moment --
and some of them are in the mail...) but my next project I was hoping to
start
picking at was a variation on the *Wellbook* Loop - a balanced AMP with a
small
loop perimeter - 2 to 6 meters in diameter... fingers crossed maybe
something by Christmas
but that might be overly ambitious - I'll put you at the top of the BETA
testers list!

How does that sound?

I am trying to come up with a working design for a broad banded (AM BCB)
for an external loop antenna based on a 30 inch diameter hula hoop as the
form. I want to mount this on rotator outside the shack and feed my SDR
with 50 ohm coax to eliminate noise pick up from the feed line. Has anyone
ever done this before, or can anyone point me in the direction to a good
site that has the plans for one?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Doing fine out here. Our top wind was just 52 and we had less than an inch of
rain. The 7 foot dish is pretty beat up. I've got a backup for when it
finally dies. Will try to reattach some of the elements to the screen with
plastic ties. That should buy me another year. Thanks for asking.

Actually the DX was just a side benefit. It's the only place near the ocean I
could afford. Check out how little it costs to live out here.

[IRCA] TP 17 Sep Victoria version.

2018-09-18 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Another "throw in the towel" morning. I agree somewhat with Bruce and Nigel
that it wasn't as good as yesterday, signals were more erratic, yet there was
still a ton of audio, with many channels showing two or more, but weak, and
thrashed by splatter.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

594 JOAK man in Japanese 1307UT, and many other times

774 JOUB Chinese lessons 1305UT

828 JOBB...English lessons 1258UT

954 JOKR man in Japanese peaking at 1326UT

972 HLCA man and woman in Korean 1315UT

1566 HLAZ man in Japanese1302UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

693 JOAB English lessons //8281258UT

747 JOIB Chinese lessons 1322UT

873 JOGB Chinese lessons 1322UT

1053 man in Japanese, rather excited, sports? 1257UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

603 HLSA soft music //558 1338UT

612 4QR woman mentioning "ABC radio " 1337UT

666 JOBK man and woman talking //594

891 JOHK man talking //594 1337UT

963 CRI woman in Russian 1324UT

981 CNR1 two men in Chinese 1318UT, //945 1320UT

1134 KBS man in Korean 1309UT

1323 CRI woman in Russian 1302UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

531 JOQG man talking //666 1304-6UT

558 HLQH 1338UT soft music //603

603 1309UT instrumental music, with island tonality; not //558; Waatea?

702 NHK2 Chinese lessons //774 1321UT

711 man talking, Korean? 1333UT

729 JOCK musical interlude, man talking //594 1324UT

738 Taiwan Fisheries man talking after musical interlude //1143 1327UT

756 CNR1 man mumbling //945 1313UT

756 man and woman talking DU English intonation 1330UT

846 woman talking, Chinese intonation 1333UT

864 pop vocal 1320UT; Japan?

909 soft music , not //NHK2 1341UT, NZ likely

909 JOCB woman talking //774 1307UT

945 CNR1 two men talking //981 1320UT

1017 woman talking, maybe island language? 1319UT

1143 Taiwan Fisheries man talking, //738 1327UT

1179 man talking Japanese intonation 1257UT

1206 woman talking, maybe Korean, into vocal music 1257UT; about 40Hz low, so
likely Yanbian

1242 woman talking Japanese intonation 1314UT, likely JOLF?

1287 man and woman talking, Japanese intonation 1313UT

1296 JOTK man and woman talking, very weak, but //594 1327UT

1422 woman talking Japanese intonation

1593 man talking, Chinese intonation 1316UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)

 639 657 675 846 855 918 936 999 1008 1035 1089 1107 1215 1251 1269 1314
1332 1503 1575 seemed to be Asian;
 558 576 585 1098 seemed to be DU

best wishes,

Nick
