Re: [IRCA] Where's the Korean Jammer When You Need It?

2018-10-02 Thread Chris Kadlec
Actually, all jammers on MW, SW, and FM are still on the air as normally in
Korea. I would send you the SDR of them, but... heck, this list can barely even
handle its own text that we send it. There have been no changes in the radio
situation. Just some hopeful people dreaming that it might change. Seoul and
Hwaseong are still broadcasting on 657, 810, 819, 855, etc. with the coastal
Incheon sites still on 855. Of course, 1053 Gimpo, 1053 Seoul, and 1080 Seoul
have been off for two years now because Haeju is turned off. All the FM jammers
for all the Echo of Unification stations on the outskirts of Seoul are still on
as usual. All the usual SW jammers at Taereung and Haengjusanseong are
operating as usual. 3970 (3965 actually at the moment) is still drunken on the
SDR like 801 used to be in the DPRK, drifting around the dial. If you have not
heard these stations, the reason must be poor conditions or poor luck. They are
all there.

Yes, Chris, I understand that Pyongyang switched to the UTC+9 system (from
UTC+8 1/2) after the first inter-Korean summit this year. So now it seems that
China (with the CNR stations having their 1+1 pip on the half hour) is one of
the few TP countries still broadcasting pips at half past the hour.

Last December in Kona, Hawaii it was easy to track down KCBS and Pyongyang BS
stations on multiple frequencies because of their pips on the half hour, but
next month on Kauai I guess I'll need to work harder on the busy frequencies.
It seems like the Southern jammers on 801. 819 and 855 have also been turned
off as a result of the summit. The S9+ signals from 819-KCBS every evening will
probably be the same, though!

Re: [IRCA] WWV and WWVH to stick around for just a little bit longer

2018-10-02 Thread Volodya S
Unfortunately, at least for me, this is no longer possible. As an active
military base, and WWVH is located within the facility, one can no longer
just saunter on in for a visit! 73, Walt (tried and didn't get
anywhere.although one work around might be to go through the gates to
gain access to the beach...which was available at certain times when I
checked, but only to Americans.

[IRCA] good night!

2018-10-02 Thread stanz...@sbcglobal.net
I spent about an hour (2230 to 2330 UTC) last night tuning up and down
the AM/MW band and noted more transatlantic carriers than I ever recall
hearing before and one new station for the log on a frequency where I
seldom expect to find anything!

Tuning from 530 to 1710, I was very surprised to clearly hear a station
on 1070. Usually all I hear on 1070 is slop from WTIC on 1080, but last
night I found WPLB with an S-9 signal. WPLB, "Mid Century Radio," is a
daytimer located in Plattsburg, New York, transmitting 5,000 watts 207
miles to my north.

Examining WTIC's signal on my IC-R8600's spectrum scope, it was obvious
that WTIC's signal was not as wide and strong as it normally appears
here (16 miles from their 50 kW transmitter). Was there a problem with
their transmitter or antenna? Did they shut down their IBOC? Dunno, but
I will keep checking their signal to see if the change was temporary or
permanent.

Meanwhile, I noted the following 23 "transatlantic" carriers, an amazing
number (to me): 531, 549, 567, 684, 693, 774, 855, 936, 954, 963, 1008,
1044, 1053, 1152, 1179, 1215, 1278, 1296, 1305, 1539, 1584, 1593, 1602.

Comparing my collection of carriers with WA1ION's recent loggings from
Cape Cod (142 miles to my east), I presume I heard the following station
carriers:

531 - Algeria, Radio Algerie

549 - Algeria, Radio Algerie

567 - Spain, Radio Nacional de España, Radio 5

684 - ?

693 - United Kingdom, BBC, Radio 5

774 - Spain, Radio Nacional de España, Radio 1

855 - Spain, Radio Nacional de España, Radio 1

936 - Morocco, SNRT (Société nationale de radiodiffusion et de télévision)

954 - Spain, Radio Onda Cero

963 - ?

1008 - ?

1044 - Spain, SER [Sociedad Española de Radiodifusión (Spanish
Broadcasting Company)]

1053 - United Kingdom, talkSPORT

1152 - ?

1179 - ?

1215 - United Kingdom, Absolute Radio

1278 - ?

1296 - ?

1305 - ?

1539 - ?

1584 - ?

1593 - ?

1602 - ?

Equipment used here were an ICOM IC-R8600 receiver and a
Hy-Gain 18AVT/WB-A vertical antenna.

What a night!

[IRCA] AIH85 DXpedition Report from Finland

2018-10-02 Thread mika
One again I have spent an intensive week of AM DXing in Aihkiniemi in
northern Finland. I got some nice new catches especially from Australia,
Japan and the Philippines. Here's my report of what was heard up in
Lapland, and what else I did over there - mostly fixing antennas and
shooting the landscape in fall colors:
http://www.dxing.info/dxpeditions/aih85rep.htm

If you'd like to experience all this by yourself, you're most welcome.
All of our 13 Beverage antennas, each 1 km/3,000 ft long, are working
well. We still have a few weeks of vacancy during the winter season. For
details, here's more info:

[IRCA] Oct 2 WC TP’s - what WC TP’s?

2018-10-02 Thread R. Colin Newell
Whatever magic was happening yesterday has been replaced with a damp towel over
the ionosphere: A few big Japanese stations, hyper powered South Koreans...

No chance of a Devil’s Triangle today: (which everyone knows is...) listening
to crazy music from Pyongyang on 657 while Rush Limbaugh or Bill O’Reilly Jr.
duke it out on 650 and 660.

Re: [IRCA] Where's the Korean Jammer When You Need It?

2018-10-02 Thread Gary DeBock

2018-10-02 Thread Chris Kadlec
As Pyongyang is UTC+9, the pips should never be on the half hour anymore,
though I think you actually know that already.

Time pips sure do help ID things when they're the only things that break
through interference or static, a lot like stations airing classical music or
NHK 2 with their music box. I could hear that across the whole AM band at
sign-off even on stations where I hear no sign of NHK a few minutes before.

After some overnight FSL antenna work I decided to check the band around local
sunrise, hoping for some strong TP signals to break through the neighbor's S7
electrical noise.

657-Pyongyang was one of the few that could break through, although it was
tough to decide which was worse-- Pyongyang's corny music (at 1256), or the
electrical noise https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/pj0vrs8cjkolzskklvkn3sfvfi6jszd1

Whether the 3+1 TOH pips are on the half hour or the hour (as at 1300 this
morning), it's always time to tune away from this station
https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/xlmyrowwabaz71v4fqu441jekg7pq4ma

No wonder all the radios made in North Korea make it impossible to tune in
anything else.

Re: [IRCA] WWV and WWVH to stick around for just a little bit longer

2018-10-02 Thread Patrick Martin
Unfortunately I missed the CO convention, but Bob & I toured WWVH back in 1985
on our trip to Kauai. I sure hope they will continue.

Hi,

Before we close the WWV discussion, I wanted to share a personal story
about WWV.

The first house I grew up in was in Greenbelt, Maryland in the early 60’s..
This was right down the little two lane road from what would be the NASA
Goddard Space Flight Center and directly across the road from our house was
station WWV. I mean right across the street.
The station manager and his family lived in an old house on the property
and I played with their kids from time to time. I often walked up to the
WWV building.

Meanwhile, we had tremendous RFI from WWV in everything electronics. It
got into our phones, radios, even my play Remco telephone set! As a 4-5
year old, I listened to WWV on our Zenith radio. I listened to the ticks
and the announcements at the the top of the minute”Eastern Standard
Time - 1:05 pm.” I would listen to the broadcasts for long stretches of
time as I looked at the clock on the wall. This is how I learned how to
tell time. True story.

A few years later, after we moved to another town in Maryland, WWV
relocated to Colorado.

I think my radio hobby is the result of massive RF exposure from WWV as a
young child. : )

I can still see the building in my mind as clears as can be, with the white
WWV letters on the front.
