[IRCA] Halloween TP Treats in Seattle

2018-10-31 Thread Bruce Portzer
Conditions this morning started out like a typical TP opening, but when
local sunrise neared there was a very pronounced enhancement above 1400 kHz.

The high point of the opening was on 1530, which sounded like a
graveyard  channel, instead of just KFBK.  DZME was the dominant station
from about 1450 to 1505. I also tried 1440 but there was no sign of JOWF
- CKJR  was pounding in on day power.

Asian signals were  noted on many high-band channels as listed below.  I
plan to go back through the files again in hopes of finding more
Halloween treats, but this report should do for now. The high end TPs
have generally not been heard very well this season, aside from the
powerhouses like 1566 1575 1323 and 1422, so today's session was an
exciting one.

1395    UNID, 1501 nondescript music, 1502 deep-voiced male talk poor in
heavy splash

1413    JAPAN, JOIF, 1458, bits of male Japanese briefly surfacing
through the splatter

1422    JAPAN, JORF, 1458, fair w/female vocal song, then ads in
Japanese, chime on the hour

1458    UNID, 1456 decent sized carrier but weak audio and much splatter
, not enough to guess the language

1467    S KOREA? 1459 possibly HLKN w/talk, not //1602, long tone at toh
(the 3 short pips possibly buried in splatter), then male talk sounding
similar to the KBS1 newscasters, poor in CJVB splash

1485    UNID, 1500 weak carrier, haven't found any audio yet

1494    JAPAN/UNID, JOYL?/?, 1459 male talk, single chime or tone on the
hour, then talk sounding like 2 stations mixing fair-poor. Some of it
sounded like Japanese, so one of them was likely JOYL

1503    JAPAN, JOUK, 1449 man & woman in Japanese that seemed to
continue to 1500 then 3+1 pips, fair

1512    JAPAN, NHK, 1500 very poor time pips & a few syllables of female
talk in heavy KGA/KKXA splash

1530    PHILIPPINES, DZME, 1450 started to fade atop KFBK, then mostly
dominant in Tagalog.  Probably the one with woman in Asian or island
accented English 1455-1500 but I need to double check the recording.
Signal peaked 1501 with man in Tagalog & definite DZME ID.  By 1505 DZME
had faded and KFBK was once again atop the channel.

1530    CHINA, 1500, loud 5+1 time pips starting at 1500:, a few words
of Chinese by a woman shortly thereafter, otherwise buried under DZME.

1530    UNID, 3+1time pips 1500 mixing with others in the cacophony,
maybe one of the Japanese commercial stations?

1557    UNID, 1455 music sounded nonstop to 1500, 3+1 pips, all long
with the final one higher pitched, then Chinese (?) talk. Good carrier
poor audio.  Taiwan?

1566    S KOREA, HLAZ, 1459 good with the usual Christian programming in
Chinese

1575    THAILAND, VOA 1458 fair-poor with program in SE Asian language

1593    CHINA, CNR1, 1500 Chinese talk, time pips, the usual ID, strong
signal but mercilessly hammered by KLFE-1590 splash

1602    JAPAN, NHK2, 1500, time pips & woman in Japanese poor in 1600 splash

Re: [IRCA] Halloween TAs

2018-10-31 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
1179 just turned up here in Victoria with music
0407UT, Nigel, and 855 had recognizable Spanish
by a woman for a moment, with someone else there
too (Romania?). 1386 also had some fair Russian talk for a few minutes

I played back the Fishbarrel, and should have
been recording the SDR (low disk space
unfortunately)as there was evidence of audio
on several channels just when the small goblins
were visiting...not future DXers obviously; they
should have been home with their radios, hi.

best wishes,

Nick

Rick……..yeah that’s what I thought too….Maybe he was referring to the
North/South Axis of Iowa. Davenport is sorta in the centre …but of course on
the Eastern Boundary. Whatever he meant …who knows, but that’s what he said!

[IRCA] slightly more TAs 31 Oct Victoria

2018-10-31 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Played back the files from last night's TAxtravaganza, as tonight is just
carriers. The playback did yield a new one as well as a firm ID for 909 (dang
BBC requires you to register now to listen to their webstream)

693 R. Five Live. With the evil CBU-690 splatter mostly ruling the channel,
there's usually not a chance for this, as CBU is within 25 degrees of the
desired DX. However, at 0427UT they drew breath for a few seconds, and R Five
Live punched through (well, a bit) with a man talking //909 which fortunately
was also delivering weak audio at the time.

819 shows promise for another opening, as there was perhaps Arabic sounding
talk by man, around 0317UT, so another target for Egypt. At the moment 864
seems best.

1179 pop vocal 0426UT, poor; Romania logged here a few days ago.

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for Halloween

2018-10-31 Thread Gary DeBock
The Chinese wave took a frightful plunge around 1430 here this morning,
leaving the band to the Korean and Japanese stations. What seemed like decent
Chinese propagation in the predawn darkness around 1330 expired rapidly with
increasing daylight, with the Chinese regulars (for this week, that is) on 639,
756, 783, 837, 936, 963, 1017, 1035 and 1044 running away like vampires afraid
of the light.

657-Pyongyang started off the session with a frightful combination of
awful music and power at 1320, with more than enough strength to wake up the
dead. Until around 1415 the consensus was that the Chinese were just playing
hard to get at good strength, but the increasing daylight sent them into a
terminal plunge, leaving only 603-China in a graveyard mix with HLSA around
1440. Ghostly Chinese signals on other frequencies were still around at 1435
but their dying gasps didn't register on the digital recorder. By 1445 it was
clear that the watered-down Puyallup version of sunrise enhancement (or in this
case, sunrise degradation?) had given up the ghost, with no hope of the high
band resurrection enjoyed in salt-water-enhanced Victoria. Such was the story
of a pretty morbid session, although the bizarre graveyard mix of 603-HLSA and
603-China around 1440 provided some temporary entertainment, as the two low
band regulars briefly tried to shout each other down at monstrous
  strength.

[IRCA] Halloween TAs

2018-10-31 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Just past 0300, and much to my surprise the TAs are at about the
same level here as they were at 0300 last night, though they took a
different route to get here. Yesterday was essentially a very gradual
decline after a sunset peak, whereas today it's been a gradual
improvement since a feeble effort at sunset.
   Right now I have 693 UK, 954 Turkey, 1089 UK, unID 1107 and 1413
Moldova in audio with 855, 909, 1386, 1503, 1521, and 1575 all close.

[IRCA] TP 31 Oct Victoria version.

2018-10-31 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
While waiting for small goblins to turn up, let's turn in a DX report .

An odd morning, with deterioration in signal levels overall from other
mornings, yet a number of Chinese continued to appear. In addition, just
around 1500UT (local sunrise), the upper band opened up with various channels
delivering a "snarl" (TM Gary DeBock) of weak signals. Mostly no hope of
identifying anything

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

594 JOAK 1447UT

747 JOIB 1415UT

828 JOBB 1417UT, but many times, hardly audible at all

837 China (Harbin? CNR5?) Chinese male vocal 1432UT. Seems odd programming
for a news station, and couldn't match it to CNR5 web stream

972 HLCA 1421UT

1566 HLAZ assumed, woman singing followed by Chinese talk by woman 1505UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by

Thanks Nick,

a woman singing was heard. A short while later, it was possible to
"parallel" it to the Anhui 936 web stream, so I think you can

Thanks for your investigation, Nick, and I should add that the times recorded
in the wild DXing setup at the local park are always approximate. A new photo
of this makeshift TP-DXing station (with the hot-rodded CC Skywave, 5" FSL, 30"
loopstick Sony ICF-2010 spotting receiver and Sony ICD-SX68 digital recorder,
all set up on a 4' PVC pipe base) is posted at

<<< This has been tough to hear, but not this morning. >>>
936 was much easier to receive here yesterday than today, Nick. I did have some
pretty good reception of music on 936 around 1425 today, but it was one of the
Chinese signals that tanked out around 1435
<<< I guess you didn't stick around for the high band enhancement after 1500UT?
>>>
Umm, what high band enhancement after 1500UT, Nick? Are you forgetting that
this is Puyallup, where the Asians bail completely about a half hour before
they do in Victoria? :-)

Re: [IRCA] 1st appearance of SpOOky TA carriers...

2018-10-31 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Yes, after this morning's meltdown I was a bit surprised to see any TA
carriers tonight, but indeed there are some.   Nothing terribly
impressive, but I did have bits of audio from 1026 Iran and 1089 UK.
(Which I would have thought very impressive not so long ago!)     The
noise level on the band is much higher tonight though, making reception
tougher, so don't expect I'll be sacrificing any more disk space.

Re: [IRCA] This morning's TP-DX from Central Iowa

2018-10-31 Thread Neil Kazaross
Tim, I recommend that phasing wire and it would be fun to see how much more
you could reduce WGN to get Greenland in the clear. Yeah, WTAM can be
really strong and a problem to null. My west DKAZ does a reasonable job on
them, but I'd like better.

I had to do much trimming and other work even before I could start
installing the north DKAZ here, but the two masts and all needed bottom
wire supports are in and lined up. This antenna will be 136 ft x 21 ft
high. 23 ft masts when extended and bottom wires 2 ft above ground.

Good luck to all on what can be the best SSS evening of the year. 73 KAZ

Re: [IRCA] This morning's TP-DX from Central Iowa

2018-10-31 Thread Tim Tromp
This morning, I had something that wasn't Marshalls on 1098, often lasting
for several minutes, and strong at times. Unfortunately WTAM is one of the
few stations that I have trouble nulling on the North DKAZ, even with my
Vactrol termination, so any audio I have on 1098 is under heavy WTAM slop.
I'll have try to a short phasing wire and target 1098 some morning during a
live DXing session. Take away the slop, and I think 1098 would have been
very good this morning on par with Tim's awesome reception from Iowa.

Hi Steve,

That list is from Dan Ferguson's swskeds mailing list. He does a great job
of compiling AOKI, HFCC, and a few others into a spreadsheet and a Perseus
compatible userlist.

BTW, I am using your plans to make an H frame for my Wellbrook AL 100LN. It
should be finished on Saturday.

Re: [IRCA] Halloween TP -early bird gets the worm gear...

2018-10-31 Thread R. Colin Newell
For the actual times I put in this morning -- 11:50 to 12:15 UTC
and 14:30 UTC to 14:40 UTC

The Japanese signals were somewhat depressed but the North Koreans, at
least some of them were stupid strong -- like 819khz -- at levels I have
never seen
before - and the odd Chinese station like 837 which was louder than the
Japanese on 828 and 774 if only in brief bursts.

If anything, this mornings slightly tamer offerings from Asia balanced out
some of the sheer excitement of last nights North African and Middle
Eastern adventures.

Seriously folks - if it got any better than this, I would be beside myself.

Re: [IRCA] Marginal 531 Audio at 0440

2018-10-31 Thread Gary DeBock
Thanks, Nick.

After reading the multiple posts about "armchair copy" of TA's in Victoria last
night around 0440 UTC I finally got envious enough to head out into the
RFI-noise-troubled back yard and try my luck on one of the "armchair copy"
frequencies (531) with a 5" FSL.
Much to my surprise the RFI could be completely nulled, and the tiny antenna
actually pulled in presumed TA audio on 531 around 0440-- marginal copy of a
cheery-voiced YL for a few seconds, along with a male voice possibly from the
SeaTac Airport TIS station on 530
https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/zalmsexc1d9rmiyv8ne09awvipjg4jct
Definitely not enough evidence to claim any logging, but maybe enough evidence
to try again during better conditions? :-)

Thanks for your assessment of this morning's TP propagation, Nick. Even in
these unusually good conditions, though, it's probably best to remember that
Puyallup is a pretty "suppressed" location in comparison to Victoria, and the
fact that so many strong Chinese signals showed up here this past week on such
a tiny antenna is "quite odd." :-)

[IRCA] This morning's TP-DX from Central Iowa

2018-10-31 Thread tim rahto
Hello everyone,

First off, thank you to everyone for their kind words about yesterday's
recordings, as well as your encouragement. I really appreciate all of it.

This morning's conditions were still very good, but not up to yesterday's.
There were multiple Japanese stations audible, including 693, 774, and 837,
but their signals were down substantially.

I was just about to get on with the rest of my day when 1098 went from a
carrier to an S8 around 1215 UTC, right around local sunrise. Here's a
recording of this morning's reception.

https://youtu.be/SKmj3uJwxaM

After navigating through the China Radio website, I was able to match up
this morning's recordings with their Tibetan service. The frequency offset
(or lack thereof) on the signal also matches up with what myradiobase.de
has listed for the CNR 11 transmitter out of Golmud, so I think its been
confirmed. According to Google maps, it's 6992 miles from transmitter to
receive antenna. How crazy is that??

Thanks to Tim Tromp for his offset suggestion, and to Chris Kadlec for his
help with navigating the China Radio website.

2018-10-31 Thread Bruce Portzer
I had somewhat the opposite happen here.  It seemed like a routine
morning at 1400 so I wandered off and did something else for a while.  I
came back to the radio just before 1500 and found the upper end of the
band (which hasn't done squat all season) to be rather lively for a few
minutes, with audio on 1467 1494 1503 1557 1593 and 1603, in addition to
the usual 1566 and 1575.  There were also carriers on several other
channels (such as 1485) that may yield something after I go back through
the SDR files.

Re: [IRCA] Marginal 531 Audio at 0440

2018-10-31 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
I don't think any of my TA receptions qualify as "armchair" by any
means, Gary, but my reception of 531 at the time of your reception
was more like "lying on the floor with a blanket over my head", so
afraid I can't help.

And yet.it's like things were generally suppressed, but not in
the usual way, where the Chinese disappear and the Japanese remain,
because the Japanese weren't doing well either. But things like
Chinese popping up on 1116 and 1395 well after 1430UT don't sound
like a suppressed band either. Quite odd.

2018-10-31 Thread Nigel Pimblett
It may really have been advantageous to be an early bird today.   When I
first checked at 1220 things were good, in line with what Colin said,
with a nice signal from Korea on 558.    But, when I got back from
having a shower signals had taken a big hit, to the point that the
Japanese big guns were struggling to produce audio.

[IRCA] TP Action into Austin, Texas

2018-10-31 Thread jniven
I did a little tune around this morning at 1100-1145utc and found low audio
on 747 and 774khz, both with female Japanese with the occasionally word
heard.

Other frequencies with hets but no audio were as follows:

558, 567, 603, 612, 621, 657, 693, 702, 837, 864, 873, 945, 972, 981, 1035.

Nice strong signal on 1017 and 1098khz but no audio.

This is with the DKAZ to the west and Drake R8 and ELAD S2 with SDR Console.
I have a couple of SDR recordings to review but this looks like the extend
of my TP action.

Thanks and good luck to all others

James Niven

Austin, Texas

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Chinese TP's for 10-30

2018-10-31 Thread Gary DeBock
Yes, the Chinese wave continues to dominate TP-DXing sessions at this
mediocre inland location, with lots of interesting signals still showing up 5
days after their breakthrough morning on October 25th.

As Nick reported 837-China (Harbin?) was one of the top performers during
sunrise enhancement, although this frequency in Hawaii was notorious for having
two Chinese stations fighting it out each evening (usually along with NHK1).
936-China (Anhui?) also managed very good audio at times, as did 603-China and
639-CNR1. The CRI stations on 963, 1017 and 1044 took a while to get untracked
but eventually showed up with S7 peaks around 1440, while 756-CNR1 and
1035-CNR1 both had good (mushy) signals at times. 603-HLSA, 864-HLKR and
972-HLCA also had several S9 peaks, although 603 was mostly dominated by China.
657-Pyongyang generally managed to hold off 657-China (Henan?) but there were
times when both stations were at equal strength. Overall the session was
another blast here, with the exceptional conditions during the past 5 days
coming at a perfect time for final FSL antenna tweaking, waterproofing and
testing prior to a Hawaii trip on Friday..After all the improvements the
tiny 5" Frequent Flyer model even managed to track down some marginal 531 kHz
audio here during the TA bonanza in Victoria last night (around 0440)-- quite a
thrill!

603 China Hulun Buir? Chinese female speech at strong level at 1441 over
HLSA's music and wimpy NHK1 female speech

[IRCA] TP 30 Oct Victoria version.

2018-10-31 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
TAs have been getting in the way of the evening TP report.

It was better than my initial impression, but still seemed a little poorer than
yesterday's conditions rather than the more fiery conditions of a couple of
days ago. Pretty quick fade out after sunrise also.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

567 JOIK 1432UT

594 JOAK 1424UT;

603 HLSA 1429UT

774 JOUB 1445UT

828 JOBB 1428UT

837 China (Harbin? CNR5?) woman in Chinese 1424UT

945 CNR1 1437UT

972 HLCA 1504UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

558 HLQH //603 1429UT

639 man //945 1434UT

693 JOAB 1428UT English lessons

963 CRI //1323 woman in Russian 1414UT

1287 JOHR 1426UT

1323 CRI //963 1414UT

1566 HLAZ 1422UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

621 Heilongjiang RGD echoey Chinese woman talking //900 1449UT

711 man in Korean 1439UT; HLKA presumed per earlier //864

657 man talking, seemed Korean, but rather quiet? 1419UT

1494 echoey woman talking 1505UT,couldn't guess language

1611 woman singing quietly, nothing like RMN noisy website, yet don't know what
