Re: [IRCA] [CapeDX] Last night for the twin Lubec, Maine KiwiSDR

Bill, I've enjoyed the Maine KiwiSDR's. Those DKAZ antennas do a better job of
throttling down the Boston and NYC (and I-95 corridor in general) pests than my
SuperLoop does here SW of you. You do seem to have more Lakes area "pestage"
there though with Buffalo, Toronto, Cleveland, Detroit, and Chicago packing
more punch on your end.

Being farther east and in immediate proximity to the ocean gives you more TA's
in the 2-4 p.m. EST (1900-2100 UTC) slot than I have here. Things get more
similar after about 2130 UTC. I notice the same thing at sites as close to here
as Chatham, Orleans, and Eastham, MA. Right on the water makes a huge
difference in that most useful low-interference pre-sunset period.

I get more Puerto Rico, Cuba, and FL here - no surprise about that.

On 15 NOV I ran 1000 and 1100 UTC captures.

Not ONE HINT of TP DX. I definitely need to try a different antenna.

The snow we had last night melted during the day.

Bill, is there a website of your latest DXpedition logs? It might make a nice
compliment to the recent PEI and NJ coast outings. I'm looking forward to
whatever the Newfie crew logs. Locally Roy Barstow has been hauling in the
goodies at Cape Cod beach sites. On NRC Facebook Allen Willie (NL) and Sylvain
Naud (QC) have posted quite a bit about TA DX.

I'm sitting on a bunch of captures and audio clips, just need to find the time
to bang up a report. Also I can relay some of Roy's notes from time to time.

Subject: [CapeDX] Last night for the twin Lubec, Maine KiwiSDR

Tonight is the final night of my DXpedition to Lubec, Maine.
The Lubec Bay Cottage KiwiSDR will go down after 6am tomorrow AM:
http://lbc.proxy.kiwisdr.com:8073/
and the Quoddy House KiwiSDR will change antenna to a ~1000ft. BOG in a
yet-to-be-determined direction:
http://qhkiwisdr.proxy.kiwisdr.com:8073/
It will remain up, with some luck, until mid-May, 2019 when the rental season
begins again.
Enjoy ‘em while they last!
Oh, the Lubec Bay Cottage Kiwi is on a 160’ DKAZ at ~ 80 deg. and the one at
Quoddy House is on a 160’ DKAZ at 35 deg.
The one at Quoddy House is a bit of a TP catcher.  Here is an email I sent this
morning to the IRCA list:

Quoddy House, Lubec, Maine - November 16, 2018

Korea on 972 was again the most steady of the TPs heard after 0900utc here in a
snowy Lubec, Maine this morning.  Star of the morning though was 1089-China
doing very well against WBAL on 1090.

Signals seemed best from straight over the pole to China and Korea rather than
Japan.

Here, in no particular order are some sound samples:

Japan on 1287 @ 0931utc
http://realmonitor.com/QH12/181116/1287-0931-Nov16.wav

Japan on 774 @ 1018utc
http://realmonitor.com/QH12/181116/774-1018-Nov16.wav

Korea on 1566 @ 1018utc
http://realmonitor.com/QH12/181116/1566-1018-Nov16.wav

Korea on 972 @ 1020 and 1021utc
http://realmonitor.com/QH12/181116/972-1020-Nov16.wav
http://realmonitor.com/QH12/181116/972-1021-Nov16.wav

China on 1089 @ 0954 and 1015utc
http://realmonitor.com/QH12/181116/1089-0954-Nov16.wav
http://realmonitor.com/QH12/181116/1089-1015-Nov16.wav

I wrote down several other frequencies with possible audio during a 1030utc
scan - 963, 1017, 1098, 1188 and 1215.  TP DXers will recognize those as either
China or Korea frequencies.  We’ll see what further listening will provide.

For reference, the previous 10 days of geomag indices can be viewed on a
running graph I keep:

http://tivodxer.com/jpgraph_example3b_multi_y_axis.php

Note A and K indices have fallen way down and Dst has gone up above zero.  All
are ‘good things’ to trans polar DXers.

[IRCA] 16 Nov Victoria version.

2018-11-16 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
I'm really glad that I took advantage of the October DX, because November sure
isn't shaping up very well. Much of what Bill heard at Lubec wasn't even
audible here as sunrise approached!

As Colin noted, there was a bit of a lift at the upper end of the band well
after sunrise here.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

no, not even remotely

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

still pretty remote

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

1566 HLAZ woman in Chinese at 1532UT was the best this could manage. Hadn't
even started to show audio traces until around local sunrise.

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

531 rock music, man talking, maybe DU English 1446UT. Really weak, but not
much interference there

594 JOAK man in Japanese? 1459UT; weak pips on hour clinched it

612 4QR after some mumbling over the previous 15 minutes, finally heard the
fanfare and likely "ABC news" by man at 1500UT

828 man and woman talking, possibly JOBB 1429UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)

 693 747 774 891 972 seemed to be Asian;
1017 1098 seemed to be DU

best wishes,

Nick

Perhapsand you get all the nasty weather also.

On the other side of the continent, no DX, but
some idle leaf raking in 54F sunshine, with light
breezes. More suitable for normal folks indeed. Very bland...

I’m getting payback now as I struggle through
gale-force winds driving a nasty mix of wintry
stuff to take down the 115 deg. DKAZ to have one
less thing to do tomorrow. Oh yea, it had
already blown down anyway — not just collapsed
masts but ‘blown down’ still erect but
horizontal. Tie wraps busted clean off. After
I warm up and dry off a bit I’m going out to
finish and try to put the 35 deg. [‘TP Magic’]
antenna back up. It’s just de-telescoped.

Fingers crossed … as soon as they thaw out.

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 16 November 2018

2018-11-16 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Nick's use of the  term 'revolting' seemed an appropriate description of
conditions here in Alberta also.    Asia did even worse than yesterday,
with absolutely no discernible audio. From DU,  4BC was actually quite
good at times, and I also noted 4QD on 1548 and 891 5AN, but that was it.

Given it's ability to reach Maine I watched 972 closely, but it never
got better than a mediocre carrier.  Interestingly I noted another
carrier there on about 972.027 which was nearly as strong at times.

Apparently there will be a another shuffle in the NZ station names prior to

The buzz jammer has made its nastiness felt on
the west coast as well, Mark. It doesn't really
have a carrier does it, just lots of carriers, like the teeth of a comb?

Where are you finding Oman-702's
pattern? fmscan.org used to show patterns, but
I seem to have lost my way as far as seeing them again.

As for India on the west coastnot here in
Victoria, not yet. I believe that the path goes
straight through the auroral oval, so maybe some
sort of slewing might be needed?

best wishes,

The Iranian buzz jammer on 1575 has been killing Farda here recently.

Fade-in before 4 p.m. EST / 2100 UTC today.

702 is usually Algeria here.  Iran likely
#2.  Oman's pattern isn't throwing much power
this way though some East Coast DXpeditions have logged it.

Are Indian stations much of a factor out west (via over-pole reception)?

Re: [IRCA] TPs on Nov 16 from Lubec, Maine

2018-11-16 Thread Bill Whitacre
Hmmm … maybe it really IS a ‘zero sum’ game — we can’t both have good DX at the
same time?! ;-)

I’m getting payback now as I struggle through gale-force winds driving a nasty
mix of wintry stuff to take down the 115 deg. DKAZ to have one less thing to do
tomorrow. Oh yea, it had already blown down anyway — not just collapsed masts
but ‘blown down’ still erect but horizontal. Tie wraps busted clean off.
After I warm up and dry off a bit I’m going out to finish and try to put the 35
deg. [‘TP Magic’] antenna back up. It’s just de-telescoped.

Fingers crossed … as soon as they thaw out.

2018-11-16 Thread R. Colin Newell
Just before 1600 UTC, there was a minor surge top band --
and I think (brace yourself...) *1566 khz Korea became audible! *

Apart from that, it was pathetic -- there is definitely some
other force at work other than polar absorption that kyboshes
our stellar TP's -- some kind of D Layer thing maybe?
Not at all understood I gather.

Conditions in Victoria seemed quite revolting
around local sunrise, so it's good to hear that
the TP's are showing up somewhere. I'll have to
see if I can find as "good" a signal heard here
around sunrise on 1287 for example.

Straight over the pole seems to be a better bet
at the moment, as there's apparently some
interesting absorption out over the north Pacific ocean.
