[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 19 January 2019

2019-01-19 Thread Nigel Pimblett
A rather poor morning here, though I also saw the sunrise boost
at the upper end of the band that Nick observed.

594       JOAK    Tokyo, JAPAN    Pips and traces of talk at 1500

774       JOUB    Akita, JAPAN    Man in Japanese at 1457.

1116    4BC    Brisbane, AUSTRALIA   Ad string at 1457, with one ad
mentioning Australia Day sale.

1548    4QD    Emerald, AUSTRALIA    Talk by a man at 1443

1566   HLAZ    Jeju, S.KOREA     Woman in Chinese at 1501, stronger than
yesterday

1575    VOA    THAILAND    Man in SE Asian language at 1454

1593    CNR1    CHINA    Man and woman in Chinese, //6125

A solid carrier on 1584 too, but never quite reached audio.   The
sunrise boost only seemed the benefit the signals above 1500 khz or so.

Re: [IRCA] Where are they now?

2019-01-19 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
Thanks to those who replied to my recent question of the whereabouts of
formerly active DXers Al Merriman (K4GLU) and Ray Moore.

I don't recall that Ray Moore had any connection to Key West. He was in Fort
Myers, as Nick mentioned. Among other things, he designed the RSM-105 passive
loop - a good performer especially in urban situations where high-Q unamplified
loops offer the most payback, well at least before every living quarter became
an RFI den of iniquity with switching supplies, cable boxes, and noisy
"efficient" light fixtures. At his FL QTH, Ray had some longpath success with
east Asia / Australia via South Pole / South America.

Al Merriman moved from the DC area to Chincoteague Island and had a start-up
year with loggings in the same league as what New England DXers, 400 miles
closer to Europe on the same track, were reporting. And then he disappeared
from the "radar". That's got to be at least 15 years ago. Pre-Facebook-era by
my reckoning. At least, per FCC info via Bruce Portzer, he's still on the
"right side of the grass" and living in Madison, South Dakota. Likely not much
TA DX for him anymore but maybe a few TP's.

Another formerly active DXer name that popped into my head is Elliot Strauss of
NJ. Maybe someone knows something about him.

Another DXer of the past, Richard Eckman, is on Facebook and seems to be in the
Far East a lot on business. It would appear that his case is one of too many
other things to do. People like that sometimes do get back to the hobby when
retirement comes along.

All the above used to spin out some great log reports.

I'll take this opportunity to say hi to Chris Black, formerly active not much
more than a mile from here. He was moving out of the neighborhood about the
time I was moving in. Good luck and DX out west Chris.

[IRCA] TP 19 Jan Victoria version.

2019-01-19 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Definitely an improvement on yesterday with a nice upper band sunrise lift.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

1566 HLAZ woman in Chinese 1611UT; at 1645UT this was also very readable with a
man in Russian

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling with splash or noise):

747 JOIB sign off music box 1544UT

972 HLCA oriental pop vocal maxed out at 1555UT, slightly less vigorous Korean
talk a couple of minutes earlier

1557 Taiwan, RTI man in Chinese 1606UT; was weaker before the hour with woman
singing a capella and talking, parallel with webstream
https://www.rti.org.tw/radio/onAirPlayer/id/1 which was delayed by about 30
seconds

1593 CNR1 pop vocal //6175 1613UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

774 JOUB sign off music box 1541UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

567 //594 1534UT

594 //567 1535UT, underpowered today

828 JOBB sign off music box 1543UT

873 JOGB //828 1543UT

1017 island sounding vocals, likely Tonga 1519UT

1287 pop music 1601UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)
 738 891 945 1098 1188 1206 1242 1296 1359 1377 1422 1458 1494 1503 1512 1548
1575  seemed to be Asian;
1098 seemed to be DU

KGA 1510 & KWLO 1580
I hadn't noticed that my local KGA had changed formats until I saw Bill Harms
& Bruce Portzer's posts about it. I just tuned in & since I'm not a hip hop fan
I don't think I'll be listening to them much.  They probably aren't expecting
to attract too many 67 year old classic rock fans like me anyway.
Spokane already has a hip hop FM, KEZE 96.9, which has been around a few
years. I don't imagine KGA will do well with this format but who knows.  Being
on 103.5 FM they might attract some of the younger folks.  The slogan KGA is
using is "103-5, The Game."

On the same note, I recently asked a 26 year old co-worker if he ever listens
to radio.  He replied that he doesn't.  He listens to music on the internet.
On another note, I'm occasionally hearing a weak station on 1580 that's playing
oldies & I think it's the new KWLO Springville, UT (about 40 miles south of
Salt Lake City).  I thought I heard the slogan "Utah's Ghost," between a couple
songs.  Yesterday, I thought I heard "...W-L-O Springville" at 57 before the
hour but it was so weak it could have been wishful thinking on my part.  I'll
keep trying.

Nicely done Nigel. Was it "ID by QSL", or did you have some other magic?

Never ID'd here, though there have been suspicions. Usually, if
Asian conditions are good here, then there arrives a big Chinese
bruiser to contend with.

best wishes,

Nick
