[IRCA] Email Subject line : Northern Bay Medium Wave Radio Dxpedition October 2013
Hello To All, The Northern Bay Medium Wave Radio Dxpedition commenced on schedule October 1 here in Northern Bay, Newfoundland . During the first half of the event , DXing sessions have been completed daily from roughly 5:30 AM until daylight arrives as well as from around 4:30 PM afternoons until as late as 1:00 AM . Here without benefit of closer contact with the outside world electronically (no internet, cable or phone) this update report has been compiled by yours truly, and is being forwarded to the group using another person's computer. Regarding just the Ultralight Radio results so far , mutiple new stations as well as 7 new countries have been heard in the first two weeks of DXpedition mode. The overall totals heard during those first two weeks using larger rigs and the ultralights combined are as follows: Countries Heard 58 USA States heard 26 Canadian Provinces Heard 8 One noticeable difference in reception at this location is the lack of the usually strong signals from stations in the United Kingdom and other Europeans. Spain on the other hand has been very dominant regardless of solar disturbance or not. It has been an amazing start to this DXpedition. Two solar disturbances along the way have certainly helped in logging a larger number of stations from the south particularly Brazil and Argentina. There was a spike in solar disturbance earlier in the first week as the Solar K Index level reached 6 ( via WWV Info) at one point thus producing S-9 / S-10 signals from the south. The first new country logged was heard Saturday evening (Oct 5) as Radio Gibraltar on 1458 was heard with a very good signal and station identification. It has been heard a number of times since. Other new ones heard , Radio Gotel on 917 from Nigeria, and VOA Relay on 909 from Botswana Radio Provincia from Buenos Aires, Argentina on 1270 was also heard , Their signal was completely over CJCB in Nova Scotia at times and has been showing up a few additional times since. Another station dominant here has been Radio Tupi from Brazil on 1280. CIWW Ottawa, Ontario dominates 1310 here WLOB in Maine dominated that channel most nights back in Bristol's Hope. There are some unique and bizarre propagational differences experienced here compared to reception in Bristol's Hope. It seems as though the lengthy high rocky cliffs located not far from DX headquarters with their steep dropoffs down to the ocean have an effect on radio waves similar to what Gary DeBock has experienced upon the Oregon cliffs. Signals from different locations also tend to change on certain frequencies very rapidly here as well. As remote from the outside world ( technologically speaking ) as we are , we have been enjoying the free time during the mornings and afternoons for rest and relaxation. With a front row view of the ocean and Northern Conception Bay waters , we await our next and final permanent move back to Carbonear scheduled for November 2 . Ironically from this location we can look a short distance across Conception Bay and see the small community of Bauline on the other side which we could also see from Bristol's Hope as well. So as the crow flies, Carbonear and the "Hope" are only a short hop, skip and jump in distance by geo-coordinates from Northern Bay compared to the winding road to have to travel by vehicle, They have nicknamed a portion of that road " The Snake". If I could use a single word to describe the " Hope" for reception it would be remarkable. To describe reception here in Northern Bay is " awesome". I say that because reception here is so uniquely different in comparison to Bristol's Hope nor far away. I am constantly amazed at what a difference only a short distance in relocation and topography can make in AM radio reception here within Newfoundland. [IRCA] Leaving the "Hope" with great DXing memories
Hello To All, Tonight will be my last official evening of Dxing here in the "Hope" ( unless future Dxpeditions here may be in the cards at some point in time ) as we make final preparations for our temporary move tomorrow to Northern Bay, Newfoundland . As mentioned prior, during the month of October while there, will be the start of the Northern Bay Medium Wave DXpedition as soon as things can be set up for equipment/antenna etc. My wish is that team members of the other upcoming Dxpeditions in Prince Edward Island and other locations have great success this fall season with their Dxing efforts. Good luck to all. Previously mentiond was the fact that we may not have intenet nor phone at the residence during the first leg of this two part move. There are neighbours in that community, friends and relatives not far away , who may help out with access to these things in that regard. I will try and submit an update / log report when I can of what is being heard in Northern Bay as time marches on. We will definitely be back online sometime after Nov 1 in Carbonear NL which will become our new permanent residence . Hello To All, For those who haven't heard the recent news , a move from Bristol's Hope on Saturday will find us moving to Northern Bay, NL ( 47' 56.30 N 53' 04.25 W ) for a month's temporary stay while awaiting new permanent residence back in Carbonear, NL on Nov 1. While in Northern Bay during October it will provide a chance for a month long one man Medium Wave Dxpedition from that location. Equipment will include a Kenwood R-5000 and Yaesu FRG-100 as well as various Ultralight radios . [IRCA] Country # 102 heard on Ultralight Radio
Hello To All, It was well worth the early morning rise this morning as there was good propagation from the south as rarely heard here , WBAP on 820 from Ft. Worth , Texas had a decent signal as well as numerous Cuban outlets. Radio Coro from Venezuela on 780 also making an appearance. As I checked the lower part of the band I heard Spanish on 550 with a pretty good signal thinking that it was probably the usual Venezuela or Cuba . To my surprise , I began to hear Radio Colonia ID's and mentions of Uruguay. The station remained audible for quite some time all by itself on the frequency until it began to fade as sunrise approached. Thus a new country for the Ultralight log once again. 550 khz - URUGUAY - CW1 Radio Colonia, Colonia del Sacramento 8:00 UTC w/ woman in Spanish quoting many uno's and quatro's, definitive "Radio Colonia" & " programa Radio Colonia " ID's as well as mentions of Uruguay by the woman and also repeated by a man afterwards. [IRCA] WDEV DX Test missed in Newfoundland - new catch later instead
Hello To All, The past five years have provided yours truly with a unique opportunity in an already much enjoyed hobby for the past forty five years. I speak of the first part of 2008, when in January of that year I had posted some medium wave loggings of what I had been hearing from here in Newfoundland on a newly aquired pocket sized Ultralight radio. Following that posting I was asked by John Bryant , Gary DeBock, Robert Ross and others if I would like to share any of my future loggings with their newly formed Ultralight DX group membership. My ocean side listening spot has allowed me to hear distant countries and locales that most people can only dream of hearing and to be able to do this using ultralight radios has only sweetened the experience and thrill of hearing faraway places by radio even more. As many of you know, Newfoundland is a prime DX location for hearing distant stations from many foreign lands. For a medium wave DXer who began his hobby at the age of 13 on the prairies of Western Canada a move to Newfoundland in later years has become a dream come true. Because of that move and the people mentioned above from the Ultralight DX group who convinced me to join in the fun I would like to now present the log from earlier this morning of my 100 th country heard using an Ultralight radio. [IRCA] Caracol on 1590 ?
Hello To All, Heard a Spanish speaking station early this morning with "Caracol " mentions occasionally on 1590 khz. Music played was lite type instrumentals. Signal was mixing and sometimes over WARV in Rhode Island . Not sure if it was a Colombian station but can't find which of the choices on MW list or other sources could be RCN Network related if that's what it was. Any help would be appreciated. Hello To All, While tuning the dial this evening I heard a station in English with Religious talk in English underneath CBG Gander, Newfoundland on 1400 khz. As the evening progressed the signal began to intensify with each peak and at times was almost equal to the Gander station. Hello To All, A couple of evenings including just now I have been hearing chants only around 23:45 - 00:00 UTC on 1476 khz, ending exactly at 00:00 UTC . Medium Wave List lists Iran and Egypt but indicating transmission from both up until around 22:00 or 22:30 UTC only. I wonder which of these it could be that is still audible up until the zero UTC mark. Any ideas would be appreciated. WRTH says, that Egypt carries Hebrew at this time and that's what I am hearing now at 2030. Was the audio muffled? Then it's Egypt. Yemen has usually been about 60 Hz below nominal and I had its carrier earlier in the evening, but now it is gone. Since that evening I haven't heard it again on the frequency. It was definitely Arabic language heard and very distinct with no muffling. Between the EMWG and MW List the information provided seems to suggest that it may have been Yemen. It definitely wasn't IRIB in Iran as I checked possible parallels at the time and found language differences. The two guides show a station in Egypt on 1008 but transmission only up to 20:00 UTC. The other is 24 hours but only 1000 watts which seems unlikely if all the info listed is indeed correct. Yemen is listed as until 21:30 on one site and 22:10 on the other. I will keep a further ear to the frequency . Hello To All, Early this morning at 9:28 UTC I was hearing the Four Seasons song "December 63 (Oh What A Night ) on 1390 khz over top of what I thought was a unusually faded WEGP in Maine . After the song finished an ID of Cruisin 96 point something was mentioned . Not sure what station this could be with 1390 AM and 96 point something FM streaming connections. Signal soon diminished shortly thereafter with WEGP audible and stronger once again. Hello To All, While scanning the band this evening at 20:45 UTC , Arabic talk with Middle Eastern music was noted for a few brief moments on 1008 khz mixing with Radio Punto Canaries before disappearing once again. It was surprising as only Punto or GrootNiuews from the Netherlands have been the usual occupier of the channel at this location. I quickly fired up the ultralight radio as well and heard the same on it, albeit with a weaker signal. A European Medium Wave Guide lookup revealed possibly Egypt or Yemen in Arabic at that time of day. I have no recording of it but will monitor that frequency the next few days around the same time in hopes of hearing more . [IRCA] Regarding the KSEY 1230 DX Test
Hello To All, Regarding the KSEY DX Test earlier, I am not sure if I was hearing things or really had the morse code bits from KSEY. The signal seemed way down in the hash and a lot of fading occuring The only definite stations that I was able to positively identify on 1230 during the time span I listened were usual CFGN Port Aux Basques, Newfoundland and WGUY Veazie,Maine playing oldies both fading up and down at times. The morse code segments I thought I heard coming through were at 2:28 , 2:31, 2.42 and 2:52 Eastern time. [IRCA] Unidentified Station in French on 1410 khz
Hello To All, This evening at 23:37 UTC I was hearing on peaks what seemed to be a station looping a message in French by a man alternating with Latin guitar type music on 1410 . There seemed to be mention of Quebec at times but couldn't make out much else as Spain on 1413 was over powering the signal at times. Could this be CJWI in Montreal announcing a change to 1410 from 1610. I remember there was talk pending previously about a possible move by the station to the proposed new frequency, Anyone hearing this also tonight ? [IRCA] Question for UK or International DXers
Hello To All, This evening on 1026 khz amongst the signals of Iran and Spain, another station which was in English sounding like BBC popped up from the mix with a male announcer played a song ( unknown in English) then mentioned Jersey a couple of times, however no BBC ID heard. It was only in for a short time around 19:45 UTC today. It soon vanished with the Iran & Spanish stations becoming even stronger. Is BBC Radio Jersey still operating on AM 1026 currently ? European Medium Wave Guide is still listing it, and only at 1000 watts. I know this isn't a lot of info to help and I'll likely have to try and listen for it in the coming days once again. Someone else said they don't play any 50s songs and The Rays songs, Silhouttes is a 50s song. it may not have been WAXB.. but it certainly wasn't WGVU/WGVS. I checked their playlist. Paul Paul, I checked the webfeed at the time and it definitely wasn't WGVU/WGVS like you mentioned. I heard the station at 1:37 UTC or 10:07 PM newfoundland time / 8:37 PM Eastern . It also featured amongst the songs a short feature on the old 50's group , The Marcels . Being the 50's as mentioned it may not have been WAXB heard either. [IRCA] Newfoundland Ultralight Log Jan 13
Hello To All Conditions here were a mixed bag with the Solar K Index a bit higher at 2. A number of stations not heard in a while were coming through, both last evening and early this morning. Last night WSB in Atlanta came right over top of the CBC station at Bonavista on 750 for a while. This morning several Chicago stations were at arm chair strength as well as others in the west. Also, WCCO in Minnesota was over WCRN on 830 for a time. At one point WUFC Boston 1510 was off air and heard in it's place was another Sports station audible off and on . Checking this out , it appears there are two other sports related stations on the frequency in Colorado and KGA in Spokane. With that signal fading away eventually and no ID , it may have been another "one that got away". I did however manage to log a new one last night. Hello To All, With all the correspondence lately regarding hearing India on 1071, I thought I would add a couple of additional notes to the conversation. It was definitely a thrill for me to finally catch India on medium wave 1071 khz for the first time on September 9, 2012 @ 00:45 UTC on both the Kenwood R 5000 and even more satisfying, the Sony SRF-M37W Ultralight. Since moving to Newfoundland from Alberta in 2002 I have been very eager to try and catch India on medium wave , as the DX teams at Cappahayden have done. Back in 2009 I was atop Signal Hill and thought that I had India on 1566 using the Ultralight radio but it soon faded out before I could hear any other definitive identifier to confirm. The signal on 1071 has been easily heard here most days since the new transmitter was first commissioned. It has been one of the earliest audible signals of the afternoon along with France on 1377 sometimes showing up just after the noon hour. Hello To All, With good conditions here in the North Atlantic this evening, combined with secondary and third tier stations audible on a lot of frequencies. On 810 with a mix of BBC Scotland, WGY in NY and CJVA in New Brunswick alternating off and on through the evening, also heard was a fourth signal floating up out of the mix for a short time which sounded like Newstalk 810 KGO in Frisco. Will keep further watch and future post if anything there. [IRCA] mystery station on 1190 SOLVED !
Hello To All, A couple of nights ago I was hearing the Star Spangled banner being played at 22:00 UTC or 5 PM Eastern (as per previous message sent). Last evening I also heard this but with much more splatter from Radio Payam in Iran. Tonight I finally was able to hear many of the ads leading up to the very clear announcement of the Legal ID , followed once again by the anthem. It's a new one for the overall and Ultralight log as well. 1190 - WCRW - Leesburg, Virginia 21:50 - 22:00 UTC Nov 23 Many ads, PSA's , Legal ID , "If you're looking for the world of sport and entertainment, join us on WRCW" then into Star Spangled Banner Looking this up I find they continue on with only 1300 watts nightime and probably a pattern change as nothing was heard here after the anthem each evening. [IRCA] mystery on 1190 khz
Hello To All, This evening I was hearing the "Star Spangled Banner" on 1190 khz with what I presumed was a sign off of a station but which one ? . The time was 22:00 UTC ( 5 PM Eastern) and signal was fairly strong. I had tuned it in too late to hear any info prior to the Anthem. It must be a station in the east as it was quite strong. After the anthem, there was of course no further programming. Any ideas would be appreciated on this one. [IRCA] 1580 Coast To Coast AM mystery
Hello To All, An interesting reception occuring early this morning at 4:42 AM Local time , I heard the George Noory show Coast to Coast AM airing on 1580 under usually heard CKDO in Oshawa, Ontario. The signal wasn't in long enough to catch other details or an ID. When I looked up any affiliates of the show on 1580 . Two results only, both in the east. Further investigation revealed results for the those stations possible as follows: 1580 - WGYM - Hamonton, New Jersey 1000 watts days, a whopping 7 watts nights 1580 - WCCF - Punta Gorda, Florida 1.250 kw days , 110 watts nights It's likely the New Jersey station , much closer , however Florida stations drift in here quite often in the early mornings. It could be one of the two on daytime power as well. I'll keep an ear on that frequency in the next few days in hopes of catching it again with more details hopefully. Trans-Atlantics on Monday afternoon were audible as early as 16:50 UTC with
audio readable from the likes of France Info on 1377. This Wednesday evening
(tonight ) the solar K index number has risen to 2 indicating a bit more
disturbance. Brazil on 1300 khz was in with good quality signal tonight
earlier than it is usually heard.

[IRCA] mystery on 950 khz
Hello To All At 21:32 UTC this evening I was hearing China Radio International in English being relayed by someone on 950 khz . The signal at first sounded like a local then eventually subsided and is still being heard off and on in the mud. With the abrupt signal drop off I wonder if it was a station switching power at the time. Any ideas on this one would be appreciated. Tonight I was rewarded with the following catch 1071 - INDIA - All India Radio , Rajkot 00:45 - 00:51 UTC Sep 9 in Urdu language news items about Pakistan, Science & Technology , then into a vocal song "All India Radio " ID and ID heard again at 00:59 when signal had diminished more. Hello All, Heard CKGM 990 Montreal testing on their new frequency of 690 this morning , the official switch over on Tuesday Sep 4 according to reports. 690 - Testing of CKGM 990 Montreal 6:32 - 6:50 UTC Sep 2 with NFL Talk, Olympic talk about Canada & Basketball team performance , then "You're listening to 990 CKGM testing on 690" email given for any interference caused by this to send to , then into NHL talk (Signal good on this frequency at this location) Ironically , one of the few times I couldn't at least hear them on 990 as well . Most nights they are audible under CBY Cornerbrook and occasionally are heard over top of CBY on 990. Also receiving this on an SRF-M37W Ultralight. RE: I checked a clip of 18th April and Egypt really is // at that time for prayer, although at 0100 they carried separate programming as they should. What direction does your LW aim? 73 KAZ Hi Kaz, Jim Renfrew & The Group, In trying to determine the signals parallel on 774 and 619 Egypt or Morocco, it seems it's a quandry for me when only chants are heard at the time. The European Medium Wave Guide says 774 is Middle East Radio for Egypt and General Programme for 819. Are these the same feeds? . Under Morocco both frequencies shows RTM , not sure if the entry on EMWG is up to date or not that I usually refer to. I probably should have listed it as tentative. By the way my current longwire at 320' is directed towards the east at 55 Degrees. I had tried previous setups and directions on a temporary basis and found that of all previous configurations this one is the most effective as far as direction. Also thanks to Jim Renfrew for the help on the recent unidentifieds. Between Neil and Jim and their experiences at Cappahayden over the previous years, their input with information is much appreciated. [IRCA] WFNY DX Test
WFNY Test heard here in Newfoundland . With two sports talk stations mixing off and on and then eventually at 1:19 Eastern, I was able to hear the morse code punching through. At times during the test there was a third station playing music off and on, however most of the selections were not strong enough to identify.
