Re: [IRCA] New article on terminated loop remote resistance control
Hi Kevin, Very nice article! The only question I have right now is how are you interfacing the control unit to the vactrol? What I would do is interface a coax cable to the control box via a SO-239 connector and outside to the antenna. The coax impedance wouldn't matter as the control voltage is DC. The Vactrol will operate down to -40 degrees C according to the datasheet. So cold Colorado weather won't be a problem. ;-) I made notes on your article. The LM7805 can have input voltages ranging from 7V to 35V DC. This will work great if powering the control unit from a car battery or a ham radio power supply. Power at V1 shouldn't drop below around 1.7V for full range on the vactrol LED. I calculated voltage in your circuit to be 2.75V at V1 which is perfect. The LED can drop up to 1.7V and the resistor, Rs, would safely drop the remainder (V1-Vled). So, the only thing I can think of as an added option would be the ability to bring Rout down to zero ohms, maybe through a switch that would also trade out the impedance matching transformer with one better suited for a loop. This should give you a bidirectional pattern, if you need it, and more gain over a terminated loop. I don't know if you are aware of the existance of digitally-controlled variable resistors. These could spawn a new generation of remote phasing control among hobbyists using computers as the control unit. Think of the possibilities! Now on to reading your next article. Keep up the great work! 73, Chris Chris Knight (N0IJK) Fort Lupton, Colorado http://sites.google.com/site/ftluptonulrlogs/ -Original Message- From: irca-boun...@hard-core-dx.com [mailto:irca-boun...@hard-core-dx.com] On Behalf Of Kevin S Sent: Sunday, January 03, 2010 11:56 AM To: ultraligh...@yahoogroups.com; irca@hard-core-dx.com Subject: [IRCA] New article on terminated loop remote resistance control Hi all: For those of you using or looking at a EWE, Super Loop, Pennant or other terminated loop antenna, just posted to DXer.ca and the Yahoo UltralightDX group is an article about a controller which precisely varies the resistance over a selected range. In experimenting with a Conti Super Loop, I have found that a single resistance value will not provide acceptable nulls for the entire band (the optimum value can vary by several hundred ohms depending on the target), and that the ability to fine-tune the resistance can make a big difference, since being off by 50-75 ohms might miss the null altogether. This remote termination design allows you to stay in front of the radio while you tweak the resistance for the best null. Thanks to Steve Ratzlaff for the bulk of the design and construction! [IRCA] First TA Loggings
My first TA Logging with an ULR is Radio 5 on 747 kHz from Netherlands! Heard at 0150-0157. The second one is France on 1206 kHz at 0213 UTC. Good signal with dance music and woman announcer. 1206 - France is an all-time new one in my log! Hi Chris, Thanks for your question. During detailed testing of the new PL-310 in my suburban location, there was no problem at all with overloading-- and the DSP Ultralights in general have developed a reputation for being almost crunch-proof in resistance to overloading. There were also no AM spurs or mixing products detected, although like the PL-300WT (and G8) models there are some internally-generated heterodynes, as detailed in the PL-310 review article. My 9' (side) PVC box loop will severely overload most Ultralight radios when tuning in locals, but the DSP Ultralights (PL-310, PL-300WT, G8, D96L and D92L) are unfazed by such massive RF. My guess is that you will have no problem at all in overloading with the new PL-310, even in urban areas. 73, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA) In a message dated 10/13/2009 12:33:30 A.M. Hi Kevin, I briefly heard music. No language discernable. The carrier is very weak, barely detectable most of the time. It sounds like anything is possible with this one. If some are hearing it in the daytime (groundwave) it is a good bet that the station is within 50 miles of them. If it was on 530 instead, the groundwave range would be more like 150 miles. Re: [IRCA] Loop antenna
Hey Kevin, I finally got around to building a previously-mentioned, portable, variable capacitance project box that's easily detached from one loop antenna and moved to another. Photos are attached. The inside contains a single 0-365pF variable capacitor (a dual-gang capacitor's profile fully unmeshed was too tall to fit). The capacitor sits atop a small piece of doubled-sided foam tape. This has got to be one of the easiest projects in the world to build. I'm already thinking about a variation of placing 3 of these single capacitors on one long side and sliding switches on the other side. The switching arrangement would place the var caps in parallel making this tuning box very versatile across different loop antennas. The Crate Loop is great! I simply place the radio, headphones, flashlight, tuning box, notebook, etc. inside the crate and carry it all out to the DX site. 73, Chris Knight Fort Lupton, CO ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

John, That was great how many helped on that one! It was mostly process of elimination that led to KICA. So, it wasn't too surprising it was them. I logged both KICA and KMIN for new ones in the process. Both stations were weak here. KMIN was logged //'ing against their streaming audio. And, yeah, the word Grace sounded very much like Praise. XEMF moving to 980 from 970 caught me off guard when I heard them the evening before you. I discounted it as XENR, because I heard a XENR ID around 4-5 minutes later. Re: [IRCA] Wi-Fi legality (OT)
Something ironic...(this illustrates the fact there are so many laws, not even a lawyer could possibly be aware of them all)...I eventually sold the Direct TV receivers previously mentioned on Ebay to a gentleman in Ontario. After 3 weeks he didn't receive them and wanted a refund. So, I contacted USPS, but they couldn't trace the shipment after it crossed the border. The buyer from Ontario did some research and found they were in Canadian customs awaiting destruction! The Direct TV cards were still in the receivers which is apparently illegal in Canada. This law was to protect another corporation which provides satellite TV to Canada (I think the name was Northstar or similar). Anyway, I lost money on the deal because of that. Lesson learned! As far as the cable TV interference, after service ended I disconnected all the nice cables they ran outside and through the house. Then as I was gardening last spring accidently roto-tilled through the portion going to the house. So, there's no QRM from cable TV! These days we have 2 OTA Digital TV boxes, 5 computers, 4 TVs, half a dozen video game consoles and DVD players. The interference level is so high that DXing inside the house with a loop antenna is impossible. The outdoor antennas are mostly quiet. The Cushcraft D3 Dipole for 10/15/20 meters above the roof can only pick 20 meters. There's too much QRM on 10 and 15 (probably from the wireless water meter the city just installed). All loggings with the Ultralight (E100) are made in the backyard or when I take walks around the local recreation center. I sold the Kiwa Loop...hi. Bryant Sent: Tuesday, March 31, 2009 2:00 PM To: irca@hard-core-dx.com; ultraligh...@yahoogroups.com Subject: [IRCA] The 980 Western Mysteries Continue I have now made TOH recordings of 980 kHz., looking at the western half of the horizon from northern Oklahoma for the last three nights running. Starting at dusk or soon after, there are three Mexican stations and one EE speaking station on that frequency. The mystery that got me started on this odyssey is the EE station. It plays religious music 24 hours a day... not really gospel music, more main line hymns and Christian contemporary ballads, I think. Here, the station is just above the noise floor most of the time. It IDs fairly often by a male, often saying just Praise 980. Last night, I sometimes heard a slogan after some of the IDs. Sometimes it was something about a place... Your place for peace and meditation or some such. Other times, it was something about Playing 24 hours a day. Last night also, several of the TOHs had the guy saying Praise 980 followed by a commercial or PSA read by a lady that gave an 800 number and a website repeated twice toward the end of the PSA. I could get the neither the entire number nor website, but I KNOW that the website was xxx california.com I thought that it was californiaraisens.com, but I tried that and nothing came up. This might be the website of the station owners??? I wish this was a bit higher above the noise floor. This is all that I've gotten with lotsa time invested in audio processing, etc. Bill Block in Arizona was able to determine that Praise was not the 980 Utah station, but he has heard the Praise 980 slogan. There is one possible station in western Colorado, two in New Mexico, one each in Arizona and Nevada plus four in California. Given that PSA, the California stations might be suspects, but I first heard this thing just after local sunset here, so that is a long way west for so early in the evening. On subsequent nights, the 0900-1100 time period has been best. THERE ARE OTHER 980 MYSTERIES IN WESTERN NAm.: At dusk here, or soon after, I have a mix of up to three Mexican stations and the Praise 980 coming from the Western half of my horizon. The first 980 mystery is the identification of the Mexican that signs off at 0400. At that time and often at the previous two TOH, I hear an XE call letter ID. Most of the time, I hear X-E-M-F fairly well and sometimes with a mention (I think) of Coahuila state. XEMF was a call used until fairly recently by a station on 780 in Montclova, COA . There is a station in Coahuila state on 980: XENR, Nueva Rosita, which I have also heard these last three nights. I can find no information about a relationship between the Montclova station and the one in Nueva Rosita, either. What is going on here??? Has XEMF moved? After the Coahuila (or whatever) station(s) clears the frequency, there are still two Mexican stations and Praise 980 present. These two Mexicans both leave the air at 0800, which would usually indicate Pacific Time Zone. Only northern Baja California is PLT and they have no stations on 980. The IRCA Mexican List shows XEXT in Nayarit signing off at 0700 and the same for XEFQ in western Sonora. I wonder if both, for some reason have moved to an 0800 SF. Why would anybody sign off at 1 AM?? Haas anyone IDed either of these two stations??? There are only 8 stations on 980 in Mexico. Its amazingly mysterious on that frequency for such few stations. After those final two clear the air, the only thing left for me is a usually very low level Praise 980 or some of KMBZ, Talk of Kansas City that leaks from the backside. I'd be happy to supply anyone with my best recordings of any of these mysteries, just ask... I'd love to have any ideas that might occur, as well, Best Regards, John B. Re: [IRCA] The 980 Western Mysteries Continue
KGLN is eliminated as they are talk. At 0400 UTC I heard a station playing the song How Great Thou Art in a country-western twang which could be your unID. At the same time there was a full ID from XENR which mentions Coahuila a lot. Then there was a PSA from the Instituto Federal Electoral. Shortly thereafter another SS station mentioned Sonora. KFWB next faded up with news and a time check/ID combo. No XE sign offs were noted. I still need KMIN in Grants, NM for an all-time new one. At 0415 UTC a station with Basketball game mentioning Trail Blazers faded up briefly. Still monitoring... No handle on the two XE 0800 sign-offs here unfortunately. Patrick, I agree on cable TV being a major QRMer. My wife signed up for cable TV while I was at work one day. The result was I couldn't use my brand new Kiwa Loop in the house any more. I put ferrite chokes all over the cables to no avail. When we had Direct TV there was no interference. As far as laws, where does one even begin to comprehend all the laws out there? Condx in Colorado are favoring the south, but not that deep into Mexico. Oklahoma and Texas signals are doing real well though. Re: [IRCA] What's your closest unheard AM station?
My closest unheard is 1480-KAVA in Pueblo, CO (120 miles south). This is due to 1480-KRAE in Cheyenne, WY which is a fairly strong daytimer and KAVA not having much of a daytime signal. KAVA has a directional daytime setup (2-towers) likely protecting KRAE (which is in this direction). Local 1490-KCFC doesn't help by running an adjacent-channel jammer. My next closest unheard is 1240-KCRT in Trinidad, CO (210 miles south) which does not get out well at all. Re: [IRCA] ALA 100 and related thoughts
Dave, The antenna you described will pull in strong signals guaranteed and maybe less noise since it will be near/on the ground. I've spooled out BOG antennas and left probably 200 feet of wire on the attached spool still coiled up and couldn't tell much difference. Then again, with a much better coil form like a Crate Loop it may improve reception. If you do decide to give it a go, you may want to compare it with another antenna such as a 100 foot longwire/random wire to see if it truly makes a difference. 73, Chris -Original Message- From: HASCALL, DAVID CIV DFAS [mailto:david.hasc...@dfas.mil] Sent: Thursday, January 29, 2009 1:50 PM To: irca@hard-core-dx.com; ch...@dxclipjoint.com Subject: RE: ALA 100 and related thoughts Chris/Nick: I have emailed Kevin S about using the crate loop, sans varicap, as a BOG wire compressor (for lack of better term). While my original example would not fit in a 50'x60' backyard, I guess that it could be scaled down. My original example used 50' feet of wire on the ground, fed into one end of the crate loop, then another 50' out of the backside of the crate, attached to another 50' section, hooked to another crate loop, then another 50' section, which would be terminated. You would wind up with a 400' wire equivalent BOG in the space of 150'. He stated that it might work and he said that he has a slinky longwire in his attic that works on the same principle. I have also saw a slinky EWE antenna that looks unique. 73, Dave in Indy ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
