Steve,

We're moving from this location

Best regards,

At 1215 A.M. PDT 07/01/11 Spanish is being heard on 1710 kHz with man and woman
talking and playing music.
Signal ranges from 20-40 db with deep fading at times. First time here that
Spanish has been

I remember listening to Wolfman Jack on my pocket transistor radio on XERB
(Big-X)1090 kHz back in 1967 from the San Francisco Bay Area. XERB signal was
strong enough to get by local KFAX 50 kw on 1100 kHz. I liked when his
listeners would call in and talk to the Wolfman. Another favorite was Curtis
Springer on XEMO 860 kHZ from Zzyzx Mineral
Springs, CA.

Wolfman Jack didn't appear on XETRA (or its predecessor XEAK) in the early
days. I've seen that claim many times, but I think it'sjust someone's
misunderstanding that's been propagated on the Internet over the years.
Wolfman Jack (Bob Smith) started airing on XERB in early '66 (possibly late
'65), and became the station's manager that year, converting its
non-religious/Spanish hours to a soul format, eventually almost a Wolfman
Jack format.
As for 690, it aired some rock programming in 1956 and went top 40 (except
for an evening religious block and some other specialty shows in English
andSpanish in non-prime time) in either 1956 or '57.
It changed to an all-news format on May 6, 1961, and went Beautiful Music on
April 2, 1968.
They stayed with that format until September 26, 1980, when they went CHR,
changing to oldies around 1984.
It was in their oldies/talk hybrid format where they aired Wolfman Jack for
a while.
They had brief stints as a news station and with a talk format until
settling into sports Talk, I believe around 1990.
(When he went national, they were one of the first Rush Limbaugh affiliates;
their promos called him Limbo.)
I was outside the area then, but I think they briefly adopted an Adult
Standards format in their final days as an English-language station, after
XEPRS-1090 (the former XERB) took on the sports talk from John Lynch, who
was the man originally behind XETRA's sports-talk flip.

[IRCA] New Station

2011-05-15 Thread vroomski

Last night while listening to Bill Wattenburg on KGO 810 there was a lot of
splatter from some unknown station on 800 kHz. Our local station on 800 KDPQ
was mixing with an unknown station with Pop music. Checking 820 I got an ID
from WBAP Fort Worth, Texas. Their signal was fair and the first time I have
heard them at this location, time was 11:00 PM PDT. I QSL WBAP for the San
Francisco Bay Area back in the late 60's. It was strange hearing splatter on
KGO with their strong signal. Radio was a Palstar R-30 cc connected to the
High Performance Active Whip.

The last Kiwa on eBay sold at auction for $600.00 Take the old maps from your

Dennis,
My Father-In-Law asked me the other day if I wanted a box of old maps he
had stored in the basement. I have no idea what condition they're in, but I
think some, if not all, of them might end up somewhere for sale. I have no idea
how to do eBay, but I guess I could learn.
I'll keep my eyes open for a Space Magnet. However, I'm still in the mood
for a KIWA Loop if I can find the moola.

job at KKOV. http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/tfr/2298001439.html I'll
miss KKOV, When I sold radios at garage sales I tuned them to
KKROV/KKAD and people would ask me about the station. How I will have to tune
one of the Bustos Media stations for some music.

[IRCA] KFI 640 in at 9:05 A.M. PST

2010-12-22 Thread vroomski

I listen to Coast to Coast on KFI 640 every now and then, if I wake up from
5:00 A.M. to 7:30 A.M. PST I can listen
to Bill Handle. KFI usually fades out at 7:30 A.M. PST this time of the year.
This morning KFI still
had a decent signal at 9:05 A.M. PST. KGVW in Montana rose up a few times
earlier, but KFI dominated the
channel. This was on the Palstar R30cc and the high performance whip.
Last week around 2:00 A.M. PST I heard the Phil Hendrie show on 1270 kHz. Was
surprised that KBZZ Sparks,
NV was in with a nice signal. That 5,000 watts gets out good. Semi local KBAM
from Longview, WA (35 miles)
was not heard with their 83 watts.

Not hearing anything on 1710 here in Salmon Creek.
That oldies format sounds a lot better than the

Bill Handle for stimulating radio. Maybe this oldies
station can plug my GE super radio when I place it

Just spent 45 minutes listening to the 1710 pirate, no sign of ident,
finally stopped recording--time for bed. Signal has little fading but not a
great signal, maybe 80-90% understanding it. Mostly plays 60's oldies with
occasional very short voice into the next song. Occasional humorous ads,
possibly old original ads. One that played several times about buying a GE
Superradio on eBay (since it's no longer being made) since that radio is
good for superior AM reception. Another humorous ad about a lady with very
large feet who needs to find mens's brown loafers in size 11 to fit her
feet.
Maybe eventually someone else will hear this and can give some more input
about where it might come from. Mid west or west coast, since little fading
on the signal? Best on my E/W longwire.

Thanks to Nigel, Mike, Bruce, Walt and Pat for their comments on the 162
 LWBC reception, much appreciated.
This morning was much poorer, however 162 did eventually barely reach
threshold audio--though a far cry from yesterday's relatively decent
reception. 1437 utc had first traces of audio; peaking at 1445 just barely
above threshold audio where the difference between male and female speech
was noted; last traces at 1510. If I hadn't been monitoring it it would
 have been easy to miss.
TP LWBC Radio Rossii also poor this morning.
 Last night produced a little TA LWBC, 162, 171, 198, 216, 225, with 162
and 225 reaching poor levels around 0440 utc. I don't usually get that
good audio on the upper channels, so 225 was doing unusually well. Later,
TP LWBC Radio Rossii was doing very well, hitting S7 at 0730 utc on 153
 and S3 on 180.

[IRCA] KKSN 910 Northwest bands only

2010-10-30 Thread vroomski

KKSN 910 Vancouver, WA changed formats to Northwest bands. I don't know when
the AM changed,
the FM switched in July. I just found out this morning while tuning across the
dial. 94/7 Alternative
Portland is the ID. Here's the link http://www.947.fm/pages/7646040.php I
have not heard
any commercials while listening off and on this morning.

Mike Patrick, T

Rewired the fence antenna this evening and when I was finished I turn on the
receiver to check out
the fence antenna. Turn to 1130 kHz and KPNW had a normal strong signal here.
Exactly at 6:30 P.M. PDT
KPNW signed-off. CKWX then dominated the frequency. 45 miles North of CKWX as
the crow flies.

Earlier this evening, shortly after our local sunset, KPWX owned 1130.
No sign at all of CKWX which normally owns 1130 up here. This went on
for quite some time until they powered down and then CKWX was heard.

Wow! That far North. No wonder people in the Frasier Valley are
complaining.

[IRCA] KPWX 1130 Mount Angel Tower Pictures

2010-10-07 Thread vroomski

Greetings,

I have 5 pictures of KPWX towers taken just after they started testing. The
towers are in a farming/ranching area
of Mount Angel. The pictures were taken around November of 2009, if I remember
right. Pictures are not that good,
it is narrow road with few places to park. The center picture shows all three
towers. As Scott said, the towers are
short.

Click the link below and the pictures will be on the bottom row

Re: [IRCA] The 1130 problem

2010-10-03 Thread vroomski

Bert,

The fence is a 6' high wood fence. I use speaker wire (cheap 20 awg wire at
Wal-mart)
The U shaped antenna runs 59'x52'x70' along the top side of the fence. Two
sides run
North-South and the bottom is East-West. The end of the 59' run is connected
to a ewe
matching transformer with a coax cable of about 12' running to the receiver.
The end of the antenna is not grounded. The matching transformer is grounded.
It receives
stations better towards the Northeast(TA's). Null seems to be to the Northwest
(TP's)
It picks up TA's as well as a ewe aimed NE. TP's are seldom heard on the fence
antenna.
It's a good antenna for me, because of the CCr's and can't be seen by
neighbors. To hear
TP's I have to go out after dark and raise the masts of the ewe antenna and
take them down after sunrise.
Hope this helps Bert.

Dennis,
Salmon Creek, WA

The Palstar R30cc with the high performance active whip the signal was S-9+20db.

[IRCA] Russian's move to 1010 kHz KOOR

2010-10-01 Thread vroomski

KOOR 1010 kHz is now carrying Russian programming. Portland PDX
forum has a posting on August 24, 2010 mentioning hearing
Russian on KOOR 1010. I'm listening to the Russian program now at
9:43 AM PST. A fellow on the list suggested that with Bustos Media
financial situation the Russian group was probably able to get a good
deal on airtime. Wonder if they still have Little Saigon Radio on
weekends?

[IRCA] Re Spanish music on 1130

Mt. Angel, OR is about 289 miles from Vancouver, BC. Vancouver is 357.4 degrees
North of Mt. Angel, OR. KPWX signal is strongest 40 degrees to 60 degrees
which is
Northeast. I have taken pictures of KPNX towers, they look rather small when
compared
to KEX's towers, but it seems that the signal gets out great.

power or sign-off? No sign of them now.

Local sunrise at Mt. Angel is 1409 utc, I will check the channel when TP Dxing

Patrick,

I was sure surprised at the strength of KPWX signal since they signed on the
air.
KPNX is strong here and my antennas are aimed Northwest and Northeast. Tomorrow
I will use the Palstar 30 cc and the high performance whip and get a more
accurate
signal strength reading. Thanks to Scott for explaining the FFC sunrise/sunset
times.
They are lowering their power at the proper time. It will be interesting to
see if tomorrow
KPWX lowers power at 6:30 PDT.

Their sister station on 1150, KLPM signs off completely at night instead of
powering
down to 47 watts.

Hi Dennis,

The mystery station on 702 kHz also showed up here this morning, at a
fairly strong level (in splatter from both 700 and 710). The carrier was rough
and the frequency was higher than 702, as Chuck had advised me about the
North Korean station. A few moments of obsolete music provided additional
evidence that this was indeed KCBS, from North Korea.

2010-09-26 Thread vroomski

Chuck,

Thanks for the information on 918 Shandong, China. This roadside pullout was
nice, a pillar about chest level, so the radio, antenna and notebook fit nicely.
Mike at Grayland Motel Cottages will be happy to see you. There are now
4 huge electric windmills located just East of Grayland, surprised to see them.

best regards,

Dennis,

Dennis:

918 is very likely to be Shandong (China). If you hang around the channel a
while, you will hear them ID in English as News Radio. At Grayland, the
Korean has always been much weaker than China.
1188: this should be FEBC from Seoul (Republic Of Korea), not DPR.

That's a nice list of ULR logs. I better get out to the coast soon.

[IRCA] KPWX 1130 kHz La Mexicana Mount Angel, OR on air

2010-09-26 Thread vroomski

Curtis McMenamin inform us at the convention that KPWX 1130 AM La Mexicana
Mount Angel was on the air. At 3:00 PM PDT KPWX is a S-7 to S-8 here in Salmon
Creek, WA
on the fence antenna which favors Northeast, and KPWX is South of here.
Someone wrote in the Portland
PDX forum that KPNW 50 kw application is on top of the FCC unblocked list.
Will be interesting
to see how the 490 watts at night gets out.

[IRCA] TP's for 09/22/10 Ultralight Grayland, WA

2010-09-22 Thread vroomski

Listened from 1124-1435 utc. After reading Gary's description of 1053 kHz in
yesterdays
posting, I believe now that I heard the station that plays the restaurant style
music.
Listening to the 10/04/09 recording, it sounds like the music I heard yesterday
and this
morning on 1053. Thanks Gary for posting the clip.

This morning it was slow early. Stations improved from 1330-1430 utc. Again
lower channels
far better than the upper channels. Only one TP heard above 1323 kHz, and that
was HLAZ 1566
with a good signal briefly, then faded to weak. Placing the twin ferrite
antenna outside away
from the cottage was better than with it inside. Placed it on a piece of fire
wood. Found a pvc
stand that is around 4' tall and will try and strap the antenna to this stand
for tomorrows listening.
With Summer gone and Fall here, conditions hopefully will improve.

Got up a little on the late side at 1310 utc and turned on the radio and it was
on 1260 and I heard a station that was new or a new format so I sat on 1260 for
the next 15 minutes. At 1316 utc I heard a ad for Scottsdale and at 1319 utc
KBSZ-1260 So I heard KBSZ in Apache Junction which was my most wanted
Arizona station. So now I have heard all of the Arizona stations. So no TP
DXing was done but I will take KBSZ!

Re: [IRCA] 1710 kHz Pirate station in Portland, OR caught by FCC

2010-09-10 Thread vroomski

Walt,

About 6 months ago I track a Russian station on 1710 kHz to a neighborhood near
164 th street
in Vancouver. Very expensive homes in this neighborhood. Have not heard this
station
this summer in my visits to the area. It seems that the Seattle area Russian
station on
1710 is still transmitting? In the Portland, OR area we have a Resident agent
office while
Seattle has a District office.

Presumably this is the Russian religious station?  The only thing that
surprises me is how long the FCC took to bust them.  There appears to be a
network of these Russian stations in the Pacific NW, all on 1710.  Wonder
whether the others have been, or will be busted as well?  .Walt

2010-09-10 Thread vroomski

Patrick,

I paid $12.99 for the Talking House transmitter. The Goodwill store had 3 of
them.
When I plugged it into a ground-fault outlet, it tripped the breaker. It works
when pugged into a regular AC outlet. 4 ft wire for a antenna in our den,
I could hear it a house or two away on the Escape radio. On the bottom of the
transmitter it says that it complies with Part 15 of FCC rules of regulations.
Last time I visited the Goodwill store the other two were gone. One sold on
e-bay
last week for around $32.00.

That is cool Dennis. How much was the talking house tx? Is it 100mw? How
far does it get out?

Subject: [IRCA] Radio Rossii on 1026

Does anyone know where the transmitter location of Radio Rossii on 1026 at
01:00 UTC is located.  As I'm cleaning up my new radio room, I put on some
amazing Perseus SDR files I recorded from 1 January, 2010 while at my Haida
Gwaii cottage.  Good to very good reception with ID at 01:05 as Golos Rossii,
Novosti.  Very slight cochannel QRM.  EMWG doesn't match.  PAL mentions a 500
kW tx in Novosibirsk, not on the air, while EiBi lists Tajikistan.  Anyone
sure?  I'm blown away with the number of Euro/Central Asian/African stations
which are heard on just about every frequency!  All this was recorded using a
QDFA array aimed due north (over the Pole to Europe).  Right next door on 1035
is the Estonian family station in Russian, but weaker, and more cochannels.
Love my Perseus!  ...Walt

Pat,

The Seattle area Russian station on 1710 is just a level 3 carrier here.
I recently purchase a Talking House transmitter at Goodwill. It works
and allows up to 90 seconds of recording on the build in recorder.

Interesting. The one in the Puget Sound on 1710 is still on tonight with
Russian music. Weak, but there off the NE EWE.
