 cheaply, and they now
 lease those facilities to others.

KEST just moved to KSFB's 100 foot auxiliary tower next to the soon to be
demolished Candlestick Park. The tower is technically still one quarter
wavelength but 40% of the electrical length is achieved by top loading; in this
case welding part of the guy wires to the top. The old tower was 170 feet.

KVEN is very hard to null here; it gets out quite well.

A translator doesn't have to be owned by the owners of the stations it
rebroadcasts, so I wouldn't
restrict the search that way. Translators are often leased. There are
several in DE/MD which are

Re: [IRCA] 1450 WKVR unID solved as WJER

2014-04-01 Thread Chernos Saul

It's definitely WJER ...
Sometimes it takes a good objective distance from a situation to recognize it.
Well, this one gets solved by Torolf Johnsson in Sweden!
He suggsted the calls as WJER (Dover Ohio).
I listened repeatedly since
receiving his e-mail and also caught in downtown Dover at 0:03
 of Clip A.
I went online, listened to WJER's webstream, and the
announcer's voice is pretty close. It was roughly this time of the morning on a
weekday that I heard it.
WJER also runs similar announcements
to those on Clip A, mentioning various place names in a single sentence.
So the calls and downtown Dover clinch this one. I have no idea what I'm
hearing when I hear Downtown Newtonville - or for that matter Paris Street in
Venice, or Millbrook. They're weak enough that they could be other names
entirely.
Anyhow, thanks, Torolf. It's a new log from Burnt River ON - and I've now had
all three Ohio stations on 1450.

I'm not much of a Graveyard DX'er but I did catch a new one this morning.
Took about 60 seconds and copied a series of ads and promos that all
mentioned Parkersburg, WV and neighboring towns in Ohio. The ads and
addresses checked out on Google, so WHNK 1450 Parkersburg, WV is added to
the overall book. It's refreshing that a station isn't running loads of
National ads, This was the easiest to copy GY DX, I have ever received.

Re: [IRCA] 1450 KONP Port Angeles Wa

2010-03-20 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
KONP will eventually lose the FM translator too, as an FM in the Aberdeen
market upgraded which necessitated a vacant alottment in Port Angeles for a
full power Fm moving from, i think, 93.7 to 102.1 which is also the
frequency of the KONP FM translator, and as a Class D it's afforded no
protection.

I assume they can probably make this move fairly easly without requiring
much off air time at all.

[IRCA] 1450 Help Needed

2010-01-06 Thread Kirk Allen
I just finished listening to a ESPN sta on 1450. It faded up to a nice lvl a bit
after 0800 UTC w/ a clear ID of ESPN Radio WMAJ. Okay, here's where it gets
confusing. WMAJ is the former call sign for the station WQWK in State College,
PA. WMAJ is also the call letters of possibly their sister station on 99.5 FM
who are supposed to have an adult contemporary format. Does anyone know what's
going on with those two stations? Maybe WMAJ is airing ESPN pgms @ night and
WQWK is simulcasting?? If not, then I'm hearing something from the past, ha ha.
Any help would sure be appreciated! Thank you.

Re: [IRCA] 1450 Help Needed

2010-01-06 Thread Kevin S
Hi Kirk:

Per http://www.fybush.com/NERW/2009/090824/nerw.html#paPer, onAugust 24,
2009 Scott Fybush states that A correction from last week: it's WMAJ
(1450 State College) that changed calls to WQWK last week when the former
WQWK (103.1 State College) became news-talk WRSC-FM. WRSC (1390) continues
to simulcast the Kevin and Pat morning show with WRSC-FM, but it's now
split off for the rest of the day, with the AM carrying progressive talk.
As for 1450, the change from the venerable WMAJ calls (still heard on FM)
did not come with a format change - it's still running ESPN sports.

So, while they do simulcast, maybe they were running an old slogan sound
clip? It's only been a few months, and maybe they pressed the wrong
button...

As a veteran of GY channel DXing, I've learned that things aren't always what
they seem to be. I'm betting you heard an ESPN station with a similar-
sounding callsign - a prime candidate would be WNAT in MS, and another
possibility might be WMVG in GA.

2010-01-06 Thread Brett Saylor
This station is in my backyard (literally). I have only heard them use the new
WQWK calls since they changed, and they are ESPN 24x7. So, Barry could be right
that it's a similar-sounding call that was heard. However, it's a pretty small
outfit, and I wouldn't completely rule out the possibility that someone
inserted an old ID into the system.

I'll listen more and see if I can spot any discrepancies in their ID's

Re: [IRCA] 1450 Logging

2010-01-06 Thread Kirk Allen
After listening again to 1450 just now, I've concluded my logging from 1450 last
night was actually this:

WNAT NATCHEZ MS 1000 1000 NDA TALK/SPORTS ESPN NEWSTALKSPORTS

Hrd just a while ago, and this time it sounded like WNAT. 99.9% sure this time.
Sorry for the confusion. After doing some research online, WNAT fits much better
than WMAV. Thanks for the help, guys!

The WATZ call letters stood out clear as a bell, well ahead of anything else
on the tape. I didn't even have my ear near the computer speaker and it was
plain as day. Nice logging that one from across the pond, Paul (C).

I listened to it again, and about all I can make out is the AM part at

end.. I *personally* don't hear any full set of call letters mentioned or
the slogan, Northeast Michigan's news and information, this is WATZ AM no
matter how many times I listen.

Re: [IRCA] 1450 KIAL Dutch Harbor, AK

2007-04-14 Thread Patrick Martin
Walt,

The station is supposed to be on the air with a longwire antenna
(Unalaska, rather than Dutch Harbor), but with 50 watts on a graveyard
frek, it would no be easy. Also they are co-channel KLAM Cordova, 250w
that no one has logged down here either, as far as I know.
When I lived in Seward AK in the 60s, KLAM operated 7:30-9:30 AM,
then 5 PM to 10 PM daily. I think they were off on Sundays. Their 250w
was quite good across Prince William Sound at over 100 miles.
Adak operated on 890 khz for many years and they were heard down here
often with 250 watts in the 60s/70s. KSDP-840-Sand Point AK I heard with
250w back in the 90s when they signed on, but in both cases 890 Adak
KSDP 840, the frequencies were clear. I would think with a beverage
pointed NW from your place up North in the Charlottes, you might nab
KIAL with a bit of luck.

KLAM and KCDV are both on the air 24/7

 Patrick

Paul,

I knew KLAM was 24/7 now. They have been 24/7 for quite a few years.
They were locally owned by a guy that ran a repair shop in Cordova I
believe back in the 60s when I QSL'd KLAM.

Bruce,

Thanks. Now, there would be a job at Unalaska. For the people that want
to get away from it all. But I'll bet, DX would be good, if you could
take the weather.

[IRCA] 1450 KIAL Dutch Harbor, AK

2007-04-13 Thread Walter Salmaniw
I'm wondering if anyone has heard this station. I notice that the 2006 NRC AM
radio list doesn't list 1450 as an active station. However, watching the
Discovery Channel's excellent series about the Alaska Crab fishery clearly
shows KIAL 1450 on the air at the beginning of one of the program's about the
start of the Ophelia (snow) crab fishery. NRC mentions 4200 watts, whereas the
Radio-Locator website mentions only 1000. They appear to beam primarily north
into the Bering Sea. I had no luck on this frequency in Masset in February.
There appears to be 2 Alaskans, with the other being on KLAM in Cordova with
only 250 watts. This is close to due north from Masset, whereas KIAL would be
close to due West.My Beverages should be able to take care of that.

KIAL 1450 is 50 Watts into a longwire antenna per a special authorization
theyve had since 1977.

They have been unable to find suitable land to build a tower. The 4200 watts
was a CP they got last year but haven't built yet. They hope to file for an
FM license in the upcoming NCE FM Window.

KIAL is licensed to Unalaska, Alaska not Dutch Harbor
