Rick & Colin,

I often find that I may have issues with streaming on the computer, but I do
not have that same issue with the wifi radio. It is mainly trouble free..

Colin,
We stream mainly oldies, but a few other specialized shows, 24/7, and
usually it's trouble-free.
And as good as a local FM station would sound.
Been doing Internet radio for more than 12 years, and running my own station
for nearly eight of them.
Yes, problems can occur, (we had a five-week period when Comcast would get
choppy during nighttime hours), and sometimes there are other Internet
issues, but I'd say it works well more than 95 percent of the time.
As Chuck indicates, , your experience isn't typical.
It might be partially due to instability of the stations you select, your
wireless network, or you could be trying to listen to AAC+ streams on a WiFi
radio that does mp3.
But your experience should be better.
I'd first try listening to streams that are specifically mp3.
(In this increasingly mobile world, many stations are using AAC+, which is
iPhone-friendly, but may not be compatible with your Internet device..)

2016-04-05 Thread Patrick Martin
Colin,

Streaming works great here. Maybe it is the rural area or my speed (60+), but I
rarely have trouble with it. The house is wifi'd and both Jeremy & I use it all
of the time. Live radio is fine for DXing, but not to my taste in listening any
longer. Few choices here and distant reception is plagued with too much noise
and fading for my liking. I am spoiled with streaming.

Mark,

Radio is not dead, but in many areas it is dying, especially AM. FM has still
some energy left. At least for a few years. If it wasn't that FM was pretty
much noise free, it would be on the chopping block too. Add to that IBOC with
several streams. But I stream a lot here and it is great. On occasion there is
a glitch, but they are few and far between. I was listening to 2GB streaming
this morning while lying in bed.

I have a Wifi radio as well - never use it. I can find an interesting
stream and listen to it for 10 or 15 minutes
then it either vanishes or the radio needs to be re-booted.

One of the reason why I never got on the SDR bandwagon - recording the
entire spectrum while you are sleeping
and then "DXing" when you get around to it, is not DXing - it is more like
"Binge watching the Soprano's" on Netflix.

If it ain't live, it ain't DXing...

Streaming is the same - it is sort of live and often delayed 10 to 15s or
more and it's pathway to you is exceedingly fragile.

Re: [IRCA] AM Revitalization: From Hard Facts to Whimsical Fantasy

2016-04-05 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---

Country music is surprisingly popular with young people too and radio still
factors in there as well. Today's country scene has a lot of performers in the
18-34 age group and many fans that age too. Even in Boston, in former years a
weak country market, there are two well-rated country stations (101.7, 102.5).
A younger audience has fuelled much of that.

Same thing applies to hip-hop / urban / R / dance music. Boston's 94.5,
96.9, and 107.9 have a significant listener base.

Internet access in a mobile environment is still not a 100% reliable option nor
is it necessarily free / cheap.

Even at the office, lab, workshop, etc. PC-based online options such as Pandora
might not be available since employers often block entertainment sites. Of
course music listening via cellphone, iPod, etc. remains on the table but radio
is still well represented in workplace music listening. Sometimes you want
some news, weather, sports, and stock market information in the mix.

So radio in general is still alive across most demographics but that's mostly
FM.

AM is still in for a bumpy ride no matter how you slice it. High electrical
noise levels are part of the problem. Lower fidelity than FM factors in too.
But the biggest problem, in my estimation, is programming that ranges from
bland and boring to irrelevant through silly to downright offensive. Very
little either to engage the mind or to make you want to dance. "My candidate's
better than your candidate" / "My God's better than your God" / "My team's
better than your team" gets a little stale after a while.

2016-04-05 Thread Patrick Martin
Les,

It is interesting you mentioned how young people get new music. You are right.
I just asked Jeremy who lives with me (kind of like an adopted son), who is
nearly 21. His answer was he gets new music from Pandora and other sites. As
soon as a new song or album comes out, it streams and he can listen to it. Many
sites offer the music for free and others you can buy the new album. For years
now if I want pop, standards, ethnic, K-Pop, J-Pop, German, French, Russian,
you name it, it is all on You Tube. My old Dodge Caravan has cassette so audio
out on the computer to audio in on the cassette deck. With my new Caravan, it
has CD, or MP3, so I can either record to a CD from You Tube or to an MP3
player. I rarely buy music these days. It is all online somewhere.

Re: [IRCA] AM Revitalization: From Hard Facts to Whimsical Fantasy

2016-04-05 Thread Les Rayburn
I think it’s difficult for those of us who are a certain age (I’m 54) to
understand that young people don’t learn about new music the same way that we
did. Their main exposure to new artists now is via social media. A friend
discovers the artist by seeing them live, catching them on YouTube, a free
preview on I-Tunes, or a hundred other ways—then they share them with their
friends on social media.

I’m a TV Commercial Director by profession. Years ago, if you wanted original
music, especially a real song with lyrics, etc. to be used in your commercial,
it was expensive. But now, I can find a real song from a largely unknown artist
or band, and license it quickly and easily for this use. Why would an artist
want to do this? Exposure. Kids see it (often on YouTube, Instagram, etc) and
then do a quick search to find out who the artist is. Next thing you know, the
song is being downloaded like crazy.

Radio is no longer the gatekeeper medium for introducing new musical artists.

If it’s going to survive, it must embrace content that caters to it’s
strengths. For the time being, that is likely to be more talk, more live
programming, and a LOT more locally produced content. Especially on AM.

2016-04-05 Thread Patrick Martin
Maybe "Never" was too strong of a word. But all of the teens and
twenty-somethings I know around here never do listen to a radio. They stream
everything and I mean everything. They listen to their music on Ipod's, cel
phones, or their computers. Most of the ones I know closely do not even own a
radio, unless it is a radio in the car and even in those cases, they Bluetooth
everything. Even me at 67, except for DXing, I now stream about everything as I
have access to crystal clear local sounding radio from around the World. Sure,
I can log 2GB in Sydney NSW, but streaming I can listen to it 24/7 with no
static or fading. It sounds like I am living in Sydney. DXing will always be a
love of mine, but for pure listening the internet has opened a door that years
ago I could not even imagined. Now with the Roku, I can do the same with TV.
More and more of it is becoming available.

I wouldn't say young people NEVER listen to radiothey certainly listen to
FM. After all, young people like their modern pop musicAriana Grande,
Justin Bieber, Fetty Wap, Bruno Mars, Meghan Traynor, and the rest. And how
else are they going to discover new artists whose music they'll listen to, then
decide they like it, and then download it? Radio breaks these talents to the
masses, and that's something that hasn't changed over the years, even if Casey
Kasem is no longer here to do the job.

It sounds like they are more interested in shutting down pirates rather than
fixing the issue. The FCC is also repacking the TV dial too. I don't have a lot
of hope for either. One big issue is that the World has changed. Streaming is
getting to be the norm for a lot of listening and viewing. The young people
never listen to the radio, let alone AM. They stream everything they want of
iTunes, You Tube, Netflix, you name it. If the US had coast to coast wifi/cel
phone streaming at a decent price, OTA radio & TV would be dead. But right now
like here streaming in the van is expensive. Verizon has good service here, but
expensive for constant stream via cel towers. AM is plagued by noise. Even some
of it gets into FM.
