Bruce,

That makes sense. I hadn’t looked at mainland stations yet. They were there
again last night with non-stop Indian mx.

Thanks.

2018-04-17 Thread Gary DeBock
Aloha Craig,

Thanks for the extensive DU-DX report from Kona-- and you certainly are
becoming a very prolific "Frequent Flyer!"

<<< I set up my portable shack, which is comprised of Gary DeBock’s superb
hot-riffed Tecsun PL-380 with the also superb 5” FSL on a picnic table on the
grounds of the Kona Isle Condominium complex. The picnic table is about 50 ft.
From the water. I tried a limited session from the balcony of the 2nd story
condo the night before with marginal results. The picnic table by the water is
clearly the way to go! >>>

Yes, getting your Ultralight DXing gear into a noise free location as close as
possible to the salt water is critical to success. Motels and condos typically
generate enough RFI to take out weak DX signals, and you need to be ready,
willing and able to "get out of Dodge" if necessary. In the Cook Islands last
week my bungalow had S7 noise from 531-1701 kHz, but the lagoon beach 150' away
was dead quiet. Any DXer booking an exotic Pacific vacation should practice a
quick, mobile setup of both the radio and antenna. This is where Ultralight
gear really shines-- tracking down awesome propagation with awesome
portability. Good luck in Kona!

Gary
