Re: [IRCA] Powerline noise

2009-10-07 Thread Patrick Martin
Update on my powerline noise. The Bonneville Power people are here along
with PPL and they are looking for it. Unfortunately no noise to speak
of today. Isn't that always the case? Anyway, I went around with them
checking poles and we found a couple that are suspect. They are supposed
to get back with me later today. One pole wire looked really suspect
with lose wires. They are both in the area of the noise. But when we had
the East wind and warm temps it was noisy. Today partly cloudy and cool.
But the sun is out, so there is hope. They will knock some wires around
if it doesn't show up on its' own. These are three experts. The
Bonneville guy has been checking out noise issues for over 40 years. I
am keeping my fingers crossed they get it this time around.

Patrick

Would you believe it turned out to be an electric fence? That's right! A
bare down wire against the downspout. Apparently an always on AC unit,
that transferred noise. I would have never guessed that! I have seen
electric fencing arc, but nothing like a sold S9+10 DB hash which even
the power guys thought it was classic powerline noise. They found it. I
am so pleased with PPL. They do great work!

Patrick,
I'm glad they found it. I remember battling power line noise for five months
in 1972, and I'm not sure anyone found' it, it ultimately went away, but if
the power folks had persisted, maybe it could have been a few weeks instead
of a few months.

Pat,

Happy to see that the your electric power company was able to find the
noise source.

The two ground rods near a power pole about 200 yards from my backyard
is being used to hold up some yellow caution tape surrounding
a hole at the power pole. The tape has the words fiber optic cable and
this cable is being hung on the power poles. Lately a little noise
problem has been noticed. I hope that Clark Utilities has the same service
as Pat's power company.

Re: [IRCA] Powerline noise

2009-10-07 Thread Patrick Martin
Rick,

Thanks. There is more to have done. Since the property in question is
private and there was nobody home, all the PPL people could do is to
move the downlead of the electic fence away from the downspout and leave
their card and ask them to call. They will instruct the people how to
solve the issue. Hopefuly they will comply so my problem will be gone
permanently. PPL will call me in a week or two to give me the results.
Being metal against metal, when it is dry I get the noise, but as soon
as the sun goes down te moisture here on the coast collects and the
noise is pretty much gone until it dries out.

Dennis,

I hope so too. My noise is gone for the time being, but not a PPL
issue, it wont to a done deal until the people make the change.

Re: [IRCA] Powerline noise update

2009-09-29 Thread Patrick Martin
Thanks Dennis. Yes, the guy seemed very caring and understanding and
knew of my issue. He gave me his phone number and I can call him at any
time (cel), as he wants to hear the type of noise over the phone. I can
easily record it too. PPL is really good about solving noise issues.
But with even fog and drizzle, the noise goes. But when we had the east
wind and warm temps, it was noisy. Tonight, totally nil, as far as I can
tell, with rain off and on. Conditions are not great tonight with the
elevated AK earlier.

I got a call from one of their radio people in Ridgefield WA. They are
on it. However, with the rain we are getting, the noise is nil right
now. At least at home. But they will catch it in time.

Pat,

Happy to read that your noise problem is at nil. I have had
a slight noise problem here lately. Hopefully with off and
on rain through Friday the insulators on the power poles will
get washed clean. Ridgefield is a few miles North of here,
so if I need them they're close by.
