Re: [IRCA] TA/TP Aug 26

2019-08-26 Thread Brandon Jordan
Hi Neil. No idea what the TP's were or if I had any audio, just
looking at all the carriers this morning. If there was some
semi-recent TP offset measurements, it would be much easier to
determine. As per my post, not had a chance to run through the
recordings yet.

On the Jaguar audio recovery, yes it beats the Perseus app imo. I
highly recommend the Calliope demod mode. Actually, I am very
surprised so few NA DX'ers, domestic or TA/TP, don't use Jaguar. I was
an original Perseus adopter, sold it after many years to fund a G33DDC
and many other SDR's but luckily found a mint unit from a ham at a
nice price to solely use with Jaguar. You cannot beat Jaguar for MW
DX, domestic or TA/TP. It is what it is, the best.

The SAL-35 is indeed just a Shared Apex Loop with a 35' mast and
expanded loop dimensions compared to the standard SAL-30/20/12. I
worked with the Shared Apex Loop guru Mark Bauman, KB7GF, to get
details on the SAL-35. This is the Mk II version with a aluminum mast.
It was a beast to get up and still needs some fine tuning, but the
LF/MW gain is awesome as is.

audios? SAL-35? I assume that is the SAL-30 with an extra mast? How do
you compare the audio recovery of difficult splits with Jaguar compared to

Re: [IRCA] TA reception in Seattle tonight 12/28

2018-12-28 Thread Neil Kazaross
I was wondering where you NW coast guys were for last night's TA's. Things
were OK here in IL at SS and gradually deteriorated as some solar
disturbance came up. Your 531 is Algeria and good peaks here // a weaker
549 as usual with this usually lively AA pop mx.

855 Spain usually atop past bad CJBC slop. I may have had Romania in there
for a bit. Several carriers noted on spectrum.

Most big gun UK's in somewhat. Quite a few lower band Spaniards as usual.
Still no sign of 1575 jammer. You guys get this and Farda way better than
do I. Just a carrier on 1026 here.

New here was Greenland on 650 // stream and the traces of 720 I could pull
past phased WGN. The way for me to get Greenland was to phase down WSCR 670
reducing their IBOC and also crushing WSM.

New here with about 30 seconds of Koran was the Saudi Koran stn on 999
coming up clearly over COPE Madrid. WMVP phases easily so I get COPE 999 in
decent TA cx.

[IRCA] TA 23 Dec Victoria version.

2018-12-22 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Some mystery TAs this evening, as well as Tabriz on 1026, the 1575 Jammer
furiously jamming at various times, plus a couple of firm tentatives

936 male talk, slow, poor in splash, rather like some of the Iranian Farsi
speakers 0101UT

702 sounded like Koranic recitation, then man talking 0107UT, poor mostly; also
some audio at 0204UT and around 0300UT also

585 sounded somewhat Koranic 0156UT

1386 Russian talk fair 0250UT ; Lithuania

819 Arabic sounding singing 0254UT Egypt?

864 popped up a number of times, with Koran recitation. At 0342UT, man in
Arabic, quite good strength, then back to recitation; at 0350UT, it was good
enough strength to start subduing domestic splatter.

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] TA 19 Dec Victoria version.

2018-12-19 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Going over old files...there were plenty of TA carriers "last night", 19 Dec
UT. However, not much audio:

909 man mumbling at 0317UT

1215 man talking, could have been English 0545UT, lots of splatter.

This evening, there were actually quite a lot of carriers about 2330UT, but
things had pretty much died out an hour later. And no, no luck on Sao
Tome-1530 at 0300UT...just WCKY in KFBK's null.

best wishes,

Re: [IRCA] TA traces in Victoria

1410 is fairly strong here, and the north Flag is
pointing at it. Quite possibly the carrier is
there, and I'm not catching it amid the splash. I'll keep an ear out for it.

[IRCA] TA Victoria 7 Dec

2018-12-06 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Not much audio this evening, but definite Romanian anthem heard on
855 0256UT, fair strength at times

Also seemed to be Romania on 1458, though at poor strength, with man
saying "Radio Romania" I think, followed by 6 short pips
0059-0100UT. The same sequence was heard on Radio Romania
Actualitati webstream one hour later.

Re: [IRCA] TA yet again in Victoria 30 November

2018-11-30 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
A quick scan through last night's TA files yielded the following,
beyond the rather unexpected Egyptian on 1503:

NOV 28

855 ROMANIA. Started to wonder about supposed RNE reception at
0130UT, with a complex violin solo being played, fair strength, and
man talking, sort of Latinate sounding, but not really
Spanish. Finally nailed at 0332UT with pop vocals at fair level and
//1179 which was barely there, but enough for a parallel.

864 EGYPT ID'd for sure with //1503 at 0128UT, and faded up many
times during the evening, either Koran recitations or a sort of
long-syllabled speech by man; best with fair to good level at 0235UT

1386 LITHUANIA 0054UT excellent with Russian sounding talk by
man. Had faded a bit by 0100UT, but easily heard a couple of Radio
Svoboda IDs then.

1575 IRAN. The buzzer was on fine form 0127UT, good
strength. Only other possible sign of Iran this evening was traces
of a woman talking on 1026 at 2339UT on 27Nov

Re: [IRCA] TA yet again in Victoria 30 November

Of course, this was the evening I was out, but the SDR labored away
in my absence, to yield, not just 864, but amazingly, 25kw from Egypt
on 1503 as well.

1503 Egypt, N. Sinai 0128UT Koranic recitation, weak but
recognizable, and even more recognizable by being parallel to 864,
which wasn't that strong either at the time, but strong enough.

best wishes,

[IRCA] TA 28 Nov Victoria version.

2018-11-27 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
and then, here's the 28th, which seemed to peak between 0200 and 0230UT, with
nothing much more than poor strength:

702 0223UT woman talking, then man, poor, maybe a somewhat Arabic flavor to
it, but Oman and Iran not supposed to be on at this time? Saudi? underpowered
Algeria? a mystery

855 0206UT man and woman, maybe Spanish 0206UT; very variable and soon gone

864 0209UT man chanting, likely Koran recitation from Egypt; poor at best, also
noted 0219UT with more of a sing song talk by man

1179 0433UT man talking then pop music, almost fair at times; couldn't honestly
get it to match with Romania web stream, and quickly gone anyway

1215 0118UT, pop vocal , poor

1539 0226UT vocal music Indian/Arabic possibility? Again, quite poor, so
imagination plays a part

1575 The Buzz first heard at 0115UT, and quite strong at times around 0220UT.
There was some imaginary audio around 0216UT, but imagination ain't good enough

[IRCA] TA 27 Nov Victoria version.

2018-11-27 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Went over some files from last night, and there were a couple of interesting
blips, though little was truly identifiable.

all 27 Nov:

855 0320UT, very poor Spanish? by man

1053 R. Iasi. The only really identified one, with 1kHz test tone from
0350UT, then choral anthem 0356-8UT, fair at best. Was verified by listening
at the same time this evening to the same tone and anthem on
http://www.radioiasi.ro/asculta-live/

1179 pop music 0446UT

1386 man in Russian sounding language 0130UT, fair at times, likely Lithuania

1539 0143UT very poor with Indian sounding vocal music; was live listening at
the time, but Asianet webstream was not delivering unfortunately.

1575 The Mighty Buzz was quite mild, but definitely there at 0148UT

639 and 936 also delivered some muffled audio around 0330UT

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] TA DX Saturday night

2018-11-24 Thread Volodya S
Once again, as Colin has alerted, TAs seem to be on the verge. Yet again,
1386 has shown up a pretty good levels on the Fishbarrel, but not any audio
into my QTH. Measuring at 1385.999 on the waterfall. Presumably,
Lithuania. 1575.000 is also there with a better signal for me, but again,
no audio. 702.000 has fair audio. Not sure who they are. Not Algeria,
who I had thought (as not // to the web feed). Walt

Re: [IRCA] TA? oh, no!

2018-10-27 Thread Neil Kazaross
TA oh yes here in IL. I spent the afternoon hobbling around (bad feet as
usual) my land with TA phased BOG attempts. 12 years ago I'd go behind my
house and aim 30-35 deg and phase BOG's. Then something in the new house we
built put out enough noise across the spectrum to convince me that was no
longer a choice. So I move in front of the house and there's noise but less
but often more from powerlines along Hwy. 59 but the BOGs are shorter.

Anyhow, while almost two decades experience with BOGs tells me that I'd
like these guys to be about 200 feet longer things still rock on the low
end as that is where cx seemed to favor here.

So the big news and thanks Tim Tromp. I knew you'd love being able to aim a
DKAZ north and that I'd love seeing what you could log. So Greenland KNR
here weakly thru a peaking 50 dB phase null on local WGN earlier. Ancrs
seemed // stream and bouncy mx sung by ladies 0104-8 clinched it. Stream is
about 1 sec behind at the most. I could also tell when the voices of male
ancrs changed when they switched and that language was typical.

[IRCA] TA screening procedure for SDR captures

2018-10-23 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
A quick Trans-Atlantic screening procedure for medium-wave SDR captures, as
outlined below, can save a lot of time when going through "gaggles" of files
representing hours of full-band reception.  Less useful, a.k.a. "naff", files
can be given a cursory review for other DX or just be given the old heave-ho to
save time and hard drive space.

A reasonable TA opening (and the regional characteristics thereof) can be sized
up well by the reception quality of each of these major players:

NW Europe: (all UK) 693, 882, 909, 1089, 1215, 1341

NE Europe: (Lithuania) 1386

W Mediterranean (Algeria-Spain-Morocco) 531, 549, 585, 612, 621, 639, 684, 738,
774, 837, 855, 936, 1044, 1098, 1107, 1422

E Mediterranean and W Asia: (Syria) 783, (Egypt) 864, (Iran) 1188, (Greece +
Saudi Arabia) 1512, (Saudi Arabia) 1521, (Iran + UAE) 1575

other propagation check: 1179 is Romania or Spain/Canaries dominating?

Mid Africa: (Sao Tome VOA) 1530, (Benin TWR) 1566.  If Mauritania 783 ever
comes back on, add that.

Deep Africa, not too much there usually but try for S. Africa and Botswana:
567, 576, 648, 657, 702, 729, 828, 846, 909 all of which have been heard in the
New England states and Canadian Atlantic provinces.

South Africa to US East Coast distances are similar to Down Under to West
Coast: well in excess of 1 km.  In both cases summer can be the best time
to DX those areas as noted by the Rockworks (OR) DXpeditions out west and Roy
Barstow's Cape Cod summer beach outings on this side of the continent.

2018-10-20 Thread Nigel Pimblett

Only audio here is on 1413, and it's rather feeble thus far tonight.
Am seeing substantial carriers on 1575 (Farda) and I presume it's
Iranian 'companion' on about 1574.92.
1386 is about the only other carrier of significance, with 1458,
1089,and 1215 another step down.

 Hi Nick,
I believe I understand your ionospheric predictive methodology. It is possibly
related to the superior conditions present when I was recently in a hotel room
in downtown Victoria, followed by the subsequent downturn in conditions when I
was in what I thought would be a superb TP DXing location in Tofino:-)

It should be a great evening for TAs coming

Re: [IRCA] TA carriers

2018-10-19 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
So far, Neil's prediction service has been working far better than
anything NOAA has been offering, hi.

Here's the 3-day prediction from NOAA

NOAA Kp index forecast 19 Oct - 21 Oct
 Oct 19Oct 20Oct 21
00-03UT3 3 2
03-06UT3 3 3
06-09UT3 2 2

12-15UT2 2 2
15-18UT4 2 2
18-21UT5 2 2
21-00UT4 2 2

Now, of course, anything might happen, but so far on the 18th and
19th, we have had the biggest run of K=0 in I don't know how long.

How is it done Neil? Entrails of a sheep? (of an HQ180?)

best wishes,

Nick

A quick sweep around 0310, lots of carriers -
the best being close to audio: 1503 1413 1386 1035 855.017 783.

Also noticed someone (not saying it's a TA) way off 540 - around 539.860.

[IRCA] TA carriers

2018-08-24 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
Listening last night - one of the few lower-static nights in recent weeks -
produced numerous TA's with Spain on 855 being the stand-out.

Most of the other bigger Spain channels were in and there was reasonable RF
from UK 693, 882, 909, 1089, and 1215.

The Iran buzzer on 1575 (covering UAE) was the farthest east thing noted.
Egypt on 864 was in and out. Not sure what's going on with Saudi Arabia 1521:
they don't seem to be showing up.

Mauritania 783 must be off still. I'd be interested in what others are noting.

I don't think Roy Barstow had it on his recent Cape Cod beach DXpedition.
Normally it would be a blowtorch around local sunset here.

Maybe both Mauritania and Sudan are heading to Bruce Conti's "Silent MW Radio
Countries" list.

[IRCA] TA from Victoria

2018-04-05 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
At 0315UT, 0352-4UT, and several other moments, presumed Absolute
Radio was delivering some audio, their usual rock music, but never,
in spite of good strength carriers, at particularly good
level. Peaks were pretty brief.

Quite a lot of other carriers, some familiar, 855, 882, 909, 1053,
1089, 1485, some not so familiar, 1251 1314 1368 1422 1458 1575 1584 1593;

But, things are quieter now, half an hour later.

best wishes,

Nick

Took something of a nose dive when I went down to the radio room at 0500z -
lots of bars on 1215 KHz but by the time I got downstairs, nothing. Using a
West Flag to chase TA’s is pretty lame too...
