One last time.

For those that have entered the IRCA contest, a call ID must be heard to count
the station. It's good to hear they are IDing, all I need to do is listen at
the right time, eh?

Identifying a station by using an internet parallel is easy, I've done it
several times, logging the station is fairly straightforward. Hearing a call ID
live has not been as easy.

Meanwhile, the Russian on 1130 is also in here very loud (again no IDs yet).
Interesting, that until they switch power/pattern at 1700 PLT, they dominate
the frequency here in Seattle. Odd, considering CKWX has been the "master" of
that frequency for years!!

Tried for it here in Clarkston WA just before 10, but no go. KKXA is
dominant, with other stations in the background.

Yes, coming in armchair copy into Victoria, as well, at 05:20 UTC with
Christian Russian music. I can hear KKXA as well co-channel, but mostly
just barely. Sure sounding like the full 50,000 watts, and not 15 kW.

Hi Phil,

On a whim I pulled out a CCradio 2E and was stunned to find near-LOCAL
quality Russian talk on 1520!

The signal nulls for me in a NNE direction (est. 345-350 deg. bearing) from
Puyallup; that's actually *towards* Everett in general.

I first heard Russian talk at 7:45pm PST, but now at 7:58 it's Russian
language music.

OK, at the top of the hour I just heard "KQRR, Oregon City, Oregon" in
English, and then back into Russian with mentions of "Christiana" or
similar. I note this station is 15 kw nighttime.

I wonder why they are coming in so strong? They are nearly pegging the 2E's
signal meter indoors.

We had this exact convo 2 weeks ago -

It's 0-30 MHz and quite useful for morning TP's.

One day we are going to have one of these on the West Coast of Canada!

[IRCA] Yet Another 531 kHz DU Mystery from Rockwork 4

2015-07-24 Thread d1028gary
Hello All,

After sorting through 5 hours of remote recordings of 531 kHz at Rockwork 4
only two hours remain, but they are still full of surprises. This DU English
weather report at 1205 UTC on June 28th (a day which featured a mix of Oz and
Kiwi propagation) apparently contains various place names, which of course are
tough to decipher by a DXer accustomed to North American English. The station
itself seems to feature classic popular music, such as You Can't Hurry Love
(or apparently, sorting through remote 531 recordings, either):

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Gary,

Going into further detail, I have amplified 3 specific sections of your
clip and posted it here:

http://www.onairdj.com/garys531.mp3

At 3.5 to 5.0 seconds, listen for Normanton .. a town just south of
Karumba on northern Queenslands west coast

at 15.5 to 17.0 seconds listen for Townsville Coast, a town on northern
Queensland's east coast, about 75 miles south of Innisfail.

at 21.4 to 23.0 seconds, listen for The gulf around Karumba.. on northern
Queenslands west coast, directly opposite Cairns.

4kz has a low powered rebroadcaster in Karumba on 1611 and I'm pretty sure
they have a relay around townsvil;le along with full power sister stations
there.

So 4KZ it is on your latest UN'id 531` clip.

Thanks very much for digging out the 531-4KZ area details, Paul.

Your analysis matches one by NZ resident Bryan Clark, communicated in a
Facebook DX-related group. After sorting through 5 hours of 531 DU recordings
made from 6-25 through 6-29 at the Rockwork 4 cliff site both 4KZ and the Kiwi
Samoan-language station PI have shown up multiple times, and even the 2 kW Kiwi
station More FM has shown up twice. But the Oz station 2PM (Port Macquarie) has
yet to appear, and there are about 2 more hours of 531 recordings to go
through.

Gary:

What gave it away first was the music.. that sounds alot like what I know
4KZ to play.

So then I went back and listened to the audio clip with more attention to
detail.

I just picked out another detail...just a smidge past 25 seconds in at the
end of the forecast, the announcer says You're listening to the Kay Zed
Network

Thats what they often refer to the station as since it's on a multitude of
am and fm rebroadcasters, though 531khz is the main high powered
transmitter.
