Re: [IRCA] John Bryant remembered

2016-02-12 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
re left will be well served by re-reading the massive amount of John's
material out there on the Web and in printed form that can be obtained through
various clubs. We should take things from John's work to help us be keepers of
the flame - not just expertise (which he had in spades) but the more visceral
thrills to be had in the pursuit of each tidbit of culture that comes through
our headphones and speakers from places quite different from home.

I know that just before his death he had hosted a 50th high school reunion
celebration that was especially important to him. How sad that it was the last
time most of his former classmates would see him.

My sincere condolences go out to his family and to his many, many friends.

Thanks for the generous comments, John, but John B. was pretty much in a class
by himself as far as hobby accomplishments. Without him (and Rob Ross, Allen

The most important thing John taught us about the Radio Hobby was to have Fun
and set Personal Goals!! He was real big about having something to strive for,
and was never happy with mediocre or not quite there yet. John had a way of
making you want to reach the next level, and would be the first one there to
assist you in attaining that goal.

Today we all raise a glass in John's honour……….

Re: [IRCA] John Bryant remembered

2016-02-09 Thread Guy Atkins
Like many of you I also have many fond memories of John, and had such
admiration for him. He and I first met in 1987 when I was publishing the
Cascade Mountain DX Club bulletin, and he joined so that he could keep on
top of shortwave DX heard from the Pacific Northwest (he and his wife Linda
would later spend most summers on Orcas Island, WA).

Many of my memories of John revolve around the fun times and hard work of
editing & producing the "Proceedings" series of books for DXers,
"underwritten" by the Numero Uno/Fine Tuning group that John and I were a
part of. Proceedings was John's "baby" and his vision from start to finish
(from the 1988 edition to the final 1994-96 book). We would work together
on the layout and final editing of the books during my summer weekend trips
to Orcas Island. For the early Proceedings editions, desktop publishing as
a publication technique was at "that awkward age", and we made so many
printing and layout blunders, often churning through multiple dot matrix
printer ribbons (remember them?) as we worked late into the night. The
fade-ins of Papua New Guinea and Indonesian stations on 90 & 60 meters
would be our entertainment as we worked.

Some of you know that both designed and built the home that he and Linda
were to retire to on Orcas. He was eminently qualified, as in 1997 John was
chosen as a "Fellow - American Institute of Architecture" (FAIA), perhaps
the highest honor in his field.

The home is perched on a dramatic rock outcropping 800 feet above the
water, and has an incredible sweeping view of the San Juan Islands, the
Strait of San Juan de Fuca, and even the shipping lanes across from
Victoria BC. This picture I took of John in his Orcas Island home is one of
my favorites and how I remember him:

2016-02-08 Thread John Callarman
I first met John Bryant in December 1956, when he was still in high school in
Stillwater, Oklahoma, and I was preparing to go from Canyon, Texas to Germany
after finishing Army basic training and the Army Information School.
John learned a lot about DX'ing in those early days, took time out to get his
college degree, then concentrated on his teaching career, following his dad's
footsteps in architecture at Oklahoma State, and amplifying on DX research on
both shortwave and BCB bands.
I visited with John in Stillwater... he visited me in Krum ... and his work
with antennas plus his interest in ultra-light DX helped keep the DX'ing hobby
alive.
The most important legacy John left was his eagerness to share the knowledge
he'd accumulated with other DX'ers. I detected, in my relationship with John,
no sign of personal ego -- "I'm the greatest DX'er" -- that, fortunately,
plagued only a handful of those of us who were active in the hobby.

During the last couple of years of John's exceptional life his primary hobby
focus was on developing the all-new Ultralight Radio niche of the AM-DXing
hobby. As such, he and I developed a pretty close relationship as DXpedition
partners, experimental cohorts and pocket radio fanatics.
John had superb organizational skills, which we desperately needed at the time
(we had wild enthusiasm, but no organization). John set up our Ultralight Radio
Yahoo group (ultralightdx), Awards Program and Ultralight Classification
System-- all of which have been primary factors in our booming growth over 8
years. While fanatics like Rob Ross, Allen Willie and me supplied the
enthusiasm John provided the organization-- although John himself frequently
shared with me how Ultralight Radio provided some of his most thrilling hobby
fun in many years.

Shortly before John's unfortunate accident he shared with me how proud he was
to have played a major part in rejuvenating the hobby interest of hundreds of
hobbyists-- and in providing a thrilling new challenge for both domestic and
transoceanic DXers. Although I had nowhere near John's DXing experience, like
John I was a hard-charging transoceanic DXer who would always push my luck with
huge external antennas on ocean beaches, boosting the performance of my humble
pocket radios up to absurd levels. He and I really enjoyed trying to outdo each
other in this friendly competition-- and there is no telling what John could
have accomplished if he had continued in the hobby until the current FSL
antenna craze.

It's probably obvious that John's untimely accident hit me pretty hard, but his
stellar accomplishments live on in many aspects of our hobby, especially in the
Ultralight Radio niche group. His leadership, insight and organizational skills
will never be forgotten!

You, too, have been an inspirational hobby leader for sharing your research in

Brandon, I thought of John listening to some old cassette tapes that I'm
now digitizing. It was an old DXPL from 1990 describing the publication
Proceedings, available from John in Stillwater, OK. Weren't they the glory
days of DXing! John was really special. Always the professor, we'd have a
mandatory Saturday afternoon "classroom" at Grayland, where we all had to
give a mini-lecture on a topic of interest. Of course, some were superb
(like John's and Guy Atkins, and Nick Hall-Patch), while others such as
myself were a little more mediocre! John had the wonderful ability to make
a complex subject very understandable. His script was superb and beautiful
to behold. DX targets were either prominently displayed on cardboard, or
in the form of handouts to all those attending. 73,...Walt Salmaniw

I'm not sure I can add anything to Colin's and Gary's words. I had the
privilege of knowing John for somewhat longer, to well over 20 years ago, when
a Sunday afternoon phone call came out of the blue, asking about details on a
Beverage matching transformer that had been publicized in DX Monitor. He took
that ball and ran with it, writing a big article about his adventures with
it.and ever since, he had been trying new things, sharing his findings in
many articles in the club bulletins, and then on the Internet, organizing
DXpeditions, the Proceedings of fine tuning, a least a couple of specialist
Yahoo groups, and just generally being a spark plug for the hobby.

I don't think that anyone can replace him.

Colin, Nick, Gary and all,

It is indeed a rough night for all of us. I just came online a bit ago
and I am shocked by John's death. I remember all of the times I visited
with John at Grayland and when he stopped by the house with his wife. We
talked hours about antennas, DX, and QSLs. I just came from the DX Room
where I have the MW550P proudly sitting there that I bought from John a
few years back. What a terrible loss. It is rough to even type this, and
it is going to be rough night sleeping too.

2010-02-09 Thread cafe

Just opened a 25 year old bottle of Scotch.
Have been looking at it for some time.
And the time was right - to toast a man who
left us all way to soon.

I share the thoughts, grief and pain of those
he loved, those he shared his life with,
his family and friends.

John's reportage was as integral to the hobby
and our environment as the very components that
made up our hobby; the Earth, wind, and sky...

And now part of our hobby is gone.

We move forward even though today we feel
an irreparable loss.

Thoughts and prayers to you John.

I'm so very sad to hear of John's passing. A few months back, he sent me an
e-mail because I hadn't been posting -- he wanted to know if everything was
okay. It was,I told him, I was just taking a break from the dials. Then a few
years before that, out of the blue, he sent me a wealth of information about TP
DXing. It was sorely needed as I'd been away from the hobby for so long. I
can't say I knew John as well as those of you who are posting so eloquently
here in his memory. But I can say that his steady presence in the club made a
difference to me...just as it has to you. Thanks John for your hard work in
promoting our MW Dxing hobby. I'll keep your family in my thoughts and prayers.
