[IslamCity] Teachings of the Qur'aan: Al-Baqarah - Aayaat 244-248
B i s m i l l a a h i r R a h m a a n i r R a h e e m Bismillaahi walhamdulillaahi wassalaatu wassalaamu alaa rasoolillaahi Assalaamu `Alaykum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuhu Teachingsof the Qur`aan Al-Baqarah Soorah 2 Aayaat 244-248 by Ayub A. Hamid __ Another notable example is what happened during the time of Prophet Samuel `alayhissalaam. At that time, the Israelites were a large community but totally divided, disorganized, morally corrupt and religiously ignorant, not even aware of the real objectives of Deen. They had developed a defeatist mentality that made them think that they would never be able to win against the disbelievers. Instead of standing up for their survival, they were terrified by the power and ability of their enemies. The disbelievers even took away their Ark of Covenant, which was religiously their most precious physical asset. The Ark was used as their Qiblah for worship and was placed in the holy of holies where none was allowed to enter except the high priest, only once a year on Yom Kippur. They were so afraid of dying at the hand of their enemies that they could not even defend their most sacred object or their cities, and ran away from their homes.[3] Facing this kind of conditions, Prophet Samuel `alayhissalaam worked day and night to educate them, to make them repent from their corruption, to revive their faith and to restore their confidence in themselves and trust in Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta`aala. Finally, they developed some courage to stand up and fight for their survival. In other words, the dead community was brought to life again. Some Muslims who were reluctant to stand up in front of the power of Quraish are being told through this example that running for the fear of physical death or hardships causes the real death of a community. True Muslims live by their principles without ever compromising and thus yielding to the hardships that a principled stand may bring. Rather, they fight bravely to establish Islam completely without being scared of death. A Muslim never runs from death. If the immigrant Muslims left their homes for Madeenah, it was not to escape persecution or death; rather, it was to collect scattered Muslims from different places at one location for building a community together to implement Islam on a state level. 244 Then, fight for Allaahs cause, and know that Allaah is Hearing, Knowing. 245 Who is it that will lend to Allaah a beautiful loan, so He may multiply it for him many times over? It is Allaah Who withholds tightly and bestows plentifully, and to Him you shall be returned. Allaahs cause, as explained above, is the establishment of Islam as a complete way of life so that all humanity benefits from the excellence, peace and justice that are the objectives of Islam. Although whatever people have is Allaahs -- given to them only temporarily in trust to use it according to Allaahs commands, Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta`aalais so kind that if it is spent in His cause He accepts it as a loan that is paid back many times over in the form of His rewards and bounties. The reward and its multiples depend upon how good or beautiful the loan is. What makes it good or beautiful is explained in details in subsequent sections of this Soorah, but it becomes good by factors such as: given only for the pleasure of Allaah, selflessly, not to show off or any other ulterior motives, giving the best quality things not the things one does not like, giving when oneself is in need, the extent of sacrifice made in giving what was given, etc. The next example from the history of Israelites has been given in more detail because the details show some parallels with circumstances of Muslims at the time of this revelation, and some weaknesses in Israelites behaviour that usually creep up among subsequent generations of Muslims. These weaknesses are highlighted for our benefit (the subsequent generations) so that we may avoid them or if we find them present in our midst, we can rectify them. Once again, it should be kept in mind that prophet Samuel, aloot (Saul) and Dawood (David) `alayhimussalaamwere working for Islamic objectives, not for a racial cause. 246 Did you not think of the chiefs of Israelites after

[IslamCity] KHALIFAH ALI BIN ABI TAALIB R.A.
KHALIFAH ALI BIN ABI TAALIB You [Ali] are my brother in this world and the next. (Ahaadeeth) Ali 's Election After Uthman 's martyrdom, the office of the caliphate remained unfilled for two or three days. Many people insisted that Ali should take up the office, but he was embarrassed by the fact that the people who pressed him hardest were the rebels, and he therefore declined at first. When the notable Companions of the Prophet Muhammad urged him, however, he finally agreed. Ali 's Life Ali bin Abi Talib was the first cousin of the Prophet Muhammad . More than that, he had grown up in the Prophet Muhammad's own household, later married his youngest daughter, Fatimah (Ra), and remained in closest association with him for nearly thirty years. Ali was ten years old when the Divine Message came to Muhammad . One night he saw the Prophet Muhammad and his wife Khadijah bowing and prostrating. He asked the Prophet Muhammad about the meaning of their actions. The Prophet Muhammad told him that they were praying to God Most High and that Ali too should accept Islaam. Ali said that he would first like to ask his father about it. He spent a sleepless night, and in the morning he went to the Prophet Muhammad and said, When God created me He did not consult my father, so why should I consult my father in order to serve God? and he accepted the truth of Muhammad 's message. When the Divine command came, And warn thy nearest relatives Al-Qur'ân Soorah Ash-shu'araa 26:214, Muhammad invited his relatives for a meal. After it was finished, he addressed them and asked, Who will join me in the cause of God? There was utter silence for a while, and then Ali stood up. I am the youngest of all present here, he said, My eyes trouble me because they are sore and my legs are thin and weak, but I shall join you and help you in whatever way I can. The assembly broke up in derisive laughter. But during the difficult wars in Mecca, Ali stood by these words and faced all the hardships to which the Muslims were subjected. He slept in the bed of the Prophet Muhammad when the Quraysh planned to murder Muhammad . It was he to whom the Prophet Muhammad entrusted, when he left Mecca, the valuables which had been given to him for safekeeping, to be returned to their owners. Apart from the expedition of Tabuk, Ali fought in all the early battles of Islaam with great distinction, particularly in the expedition of Khaybar. It is said that in the Battle of Uhud he received more than sixteen wounds. The Prophet Muhammad loved Ali Ibn Abi Talib dearly and called him by many fond names. Once the Prophet Muhammad found him sleeping in the dust. He brushed off Ali 's clothes and said fondly, Wake up, Abu Turab (Father of Dust). The Prophet Muhammad also gave him the title of 'Asadullah' ('Lion of God'). Ali 's humility, austerity, piety, deep knowledge of the Qur'ân and his sagacity gave him great distinction among the Prophet Muhammad 's Companions. Abu Bakr Siddeeq , 'Umar Farooq and Uthman Gani consulted him frequently during their Khilafah (caliphates) Many times 'Umar had made him his vice-regent at Medina when he was away. Ali was also a great scholar of Arabic literature and pioneered in the field of grammar and rhetoric. His speeches, sermons and letters served for generations afterward as models of literary expression. Many of his wise and epigrammatic sayings have been preserved. Ali thus had a rich and versatile personality. In spite of these attainments he remained a modest and humble man. Once during his caliphate when he was going about the marketplace, a man stood up in respect and followed him. Do not do it said Ali . Such manners are a temptation for a ruler and a disgrace for the ruled. Ali and his household lived extremely simple and austere lives. Sometimes they even went hungry themselves because of Ali 's great generosity, and none who asked for help was ever turned away from his door. His plain, austere style of living did not change even when he was ruler over a vast domain. Ali 's Caliphate As mentioned previously, Ali accepted the caliphate very reluctantly. Uthman 's murder and the events surrounding it were a symptom, and also became a cause, of civil strife on a large scale. Ali felt that the tragic situation was mainly due to inept governors. He therefore dismissed all the governors who had been appointed by Uthman and appointed new ones. All the governors excepting Muawiya , the governor of Syria, submitted to his orders. Muawiya declined to obey until Uthman 's blood was avenged. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him)'s widow Aa'ishah also took the position that Ali should first bring the murderers to trial. Due to the chaotic conditions during the last days of Uthman it was very difficult to establish the identity of the murderers, and Ali refused to punish anyone whose guilt was not lawfully proved. Thus a battle between the army of Ali and the supporters of Aa'ishah
[IslamCity] WHY AMERICA IS BEING CURSED?
bismi-lLah wa-lhamdu li-lLah wa-shshalatu wa-ssalamu 'ala rasuli-lLah wa 'ala alihi wa ashhabihi wa ma-wwalah, amma ba'd, assalamu 'alaikum. bagi2 kiriamn temen nech. Bruce Porteous Subject: A visitors immpression of America WHY AMERICA IS BEING CURSED? I have just returned from visiting the USA after being in Europe over the last month. What I find in visiting the USA both shocked and alarmed me. I found a nation continuing to sleep-walk towards its own destruction. The American people have increasingly become dumbed down through their media - they are becoming polarized with extremists on both the left and right proclaiming messages of hate and intolerance. Yet the media fails to inform Americans the peril their country is now in - there is a total lack of awareness of the dangers that lie ahead. People fail to grasp on the realities of the economic, political and environmental world which the USA must now co-exist in. There appears to a total lack of leadership or understanding in solving America's or the world's problems. One of the tragedies resulting from the brain-washing of the American people is in deceiving them that they are the greatest nation of earth that their way of life is the model all nations should follow. The leadership claims that democracy is the form of governments all nations should adopt. America is the land of freedom, yet the majority of American's are under bondage to an economic system that has enslaved them. Yet many America's continue to deceive themselves into believing that God is blessing America. While they continue to sing God Bless America it is becoming increasingly clear that God is no longer blessing America. Rather, America is now being cursed because of its sins. Why would God curse America when it still proclaims to be a Christian nation? Clearly God has blessed America in the past - why should these blessing now withdrawn and the nation be cursed. The reason why America is being cursed is because of the rejection of the legal code given to us by God through the Bible on how we are to live our lives, and be governed. Let's look at some of the reasons how and why America is being cursed today, which will shortly lead to its destruction. 1. War - the mess America has got itself into in Iraq us a direct result of the nation relying on its own military might and trying to resolve international problems though force, rather than having the faith to trust God to defend them, as He promised if we keep His commandments. It will eventually result in the defeat of the USA, followed by its economic collapse. 2. Economics - why has what once was the world's richest nation now the world's greatest debtor nation. America is now totally dependent on being able to attract capital from its former enemies to prevent its economy collapsing. When America's former enemies are no longer prepared to lend the money to sustain the American economy will be the time its economy will collapse. 3. Environmental - clearly the USA is now suffering the direct consequences of the break-down of the global environment. No other nation has squandered its non-renewable resources as America has done. The rejection of environmental laws God has given mankind has directly resulted in the ecological disaster how planet now faces. Yet America's leaders continue to live in denial that these problems exist, because the changes needed to be made would not be acceptable economically or politically. Yet unless these changes are made, natural disasters such as the recent hurricanes will continue to increase. 4. Law and Order - continued break-down of moral standards and growth in the influence of drugs has resulted in an exploding prison population and growth is most types of crime. I was shocked to experience people being physically attacked and beaten while in the center of San Francisco in broad daylight when visiting this city. 5. Care for the needy - I was amazed to see the numbers of homeless living on the streets in the USA. For a nation that has so much wealth, it is a shock to see so many poor people begging in the streets. This one does not see in Europe or New Zealand. There is something wrong with a society that does not provide care for those less fortunate. 6. Divisions within American society - the opposition to the Iraqi War is now gaining moment, with public demonstrations against the occupation of Iraq throughout the USA. Unfortunately, the American people were lied to by their leaders, supported by the populist media (such as Fox News) and the Christian-right into supporting the invasion of Iraq in 2003. They have now are coming to realize how they were deceived. To withdraw the American forces from Iraq now would be an even worse disaster for the country than the illegal invasion was in the first place. 7. Cost of living - as inflation increases, and real incomes declined, many

[IslamCity] FPIF News | Who's Next - Iran Syria? | A Tale of Two Speeches | Al-Quaida's Second Generation
Title: New at FPIF New at FPIF Working to make the United States a more responsible global leader and partner http://www.fpif.org/ Introducing the latest policy analysis from Foreign Policy In Focus Whos NextIran & Syria? By Conn Hallinan In the wake of a United Nations investigation implicating a number of Syrian and Lebanese officials in the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, the Bush administration is calling for international sanctions, and leaking dark hints of war. But the United States is already unofficially at war with Syria. For the past six months, U.S. Army Rangers and the Special Operations Delta Force have been crossing the border into Syria, supposedly to interdict terrorists coming into Iraq. Several Syrian soldiers have been killed. The analogy the administration is using for this invasion? Cambodia. Syria is an easier target than Iran. With the exception of its northern border, the country is a flat plain, less than half the size of Iraq and with a population of only 16.7 million. It is also reeling from the UN investigation. This may make Syria look like fruit ripe for the picking, and an invasion would certainly divert attention from the chaos in Iraq and Afghanistan. It would also be a logical extension of the Bush administrations mythology that all our troubles in the Middle East are caused by foreign Islamic terrorists. For the outcome of such a strategy see the war in Southeast Asia. Conn Hallinan is a foreign policy analyst for Foreign Policy In Focus (online at www.fpif.org ), and a lecturer in journalism at the University of California, Santa Cruz. See new FPIF commentary online at: http://fpif.org/fpiftxt/2920 With printer-friendly pdf version at: http://fpif.org/pdf/gac/0511next.pdf Iraq: A Tale of Two Speeches By Col. Daniel Smith, U.S. Army (Ret.) September 29, 2005 found General John Abizaid, Commander of U.S. Central Command, testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee. With him were the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the top U.S. general in Iraq. The overall subject was the war on terror with its three subsets: global (including al-Qaida) jihad and the fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. General Abizaids opening remarks emphasized his considered view (he is, like T.E. Lawrence, a hands-on student of the Middle East) of the underlying connections among these topics. One week later October 6, President Bush spoke mid-morning to an audience at the National Endowment for Democracy. His topic was the war on terror. As this was by far the shorter of the two (when the questioning by committee members is included) and more readily available, I perused it first. The presidents speech was a curious mixture. There were old themes and shop-worn mantras. By word count in the 40-minute address, the president vilified tyrants, tyranny, and autocrats a dozen times and commended democracy, democratic processes, and liberty 13 times. The presidents long-standing favorite concept, freedom, garnered 26 references but was outstripped by terror, terrorism, and terrorist at 30 repetitions. Uncharacteristically, the usual uncompromisingly stark Manichean division of individuals and countries into good and evil was muted. Instead, the president spent a significant amount of time describing the ideology (14) of violence (11) being preached by al-Qaida and practiced by radicalized (21) and fanatical (4) militant extremists (24) who regard the West in general and the United States in particular as their enemy (24). Bush also tries to draw a parallel between the Cold War battle with communism won (7) by the West and al-Qaidas Islamo-fascism, both of which, in due time, are destined to be rejected because neither offers a vision (7) of human progress (7). And again he spoke of sacrifice (6) but only in general terms. The penny dropped a few days later when I finally read through the transcript of the September 29 Senate hearing. Here, without question, was the presidents source, as the following illustrates (with commentary on selected issues). Dan Smith is a military affairs analyst for Foreign Policy In Focus (online at www.fpif.org ), a retired U.S. Army colonel, and a senior fellow on military affairs at the Friends Committee on National Legislation. "Holocaust Denial!" or as the German government puts it primly, "disparaging the dead." Germany has outdone even the U.S. government in its violations of democracy. In a shocking development, the German judge DISMISSED ZUNDEL's attorney, Horst Mahler, accusing the attorney of having distributed "anti-semitic" literature. Thus Zundel cannot have his own attorney. The judge wants him to have an attorney who will AGREE WITH THE PROSECUTION. In other words, Zundel can only have an attorney who believes that Zundel is wrong. Go figure that out! Germany is second only to the U.S. in support for Israel and in provision of weaponry and funds to Israel. The holocaust of the Jews is considered a myth by those segments of the intelligentsia who have studied the research work which has emerged in the last 25 years. It is ridiculous in this age and time for a regime to put a scholar and a writer on trial because he denies the ideology of the State. Muslims should keep an eye on the Zundel trial. If he is not honorably freed, Muslims should demand a trial of Salman Rushdie, Irshad Manji, "Ibn Warraq," the obscene woman named Hirsi Ali [being supported by Holland]and others who have disparaged the Muslim dead, including Prophet

Dear members of the list, Assalamu Alaikum.I appreciate Dr Mathir in many respects. I however dis-agree with his comment onKamal Ataturk write-up (below) ( Dr. Mahathir says:-Many Muslims still condemn the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kamal, because he tried to modernise his country. But would Turkey be Muslim today without Ataturk? Mustafa Kamal's clear-sightedness saved Islam in Turkey and saved Turkey for Islam. ).This is not a sound assessment of him.It is too much to say that Turkey would not have been Muslim withouthim. .Allother Muslim countries have remained Muslims and even progressed without a Kamal even in far worse circumstances. Of course he modernised in technical areas but he was a true cultural slave of Europe who even banned cap, changed the script, abolished Azan in Arabic ,abolished Shariah courts and abolished Sufi orders All these were flagrant violation of religious and human rights, also national interest and cultural identity. He was also a dictator and an oppressor. I am sorry that Dr. Mahathir eulogized him in such a manner. But would Turkey be Muslim today without Ataturk? Mustafa Kamal's clear-sightedness saved Islam in Turkey and saved Turkey for Islam Children often play a game where they sit in a circle. One whispers something to his neighbour, who then whispers that information to the next child, and so on, around the circle. By the time the last child whispers the information to the first, it is totally different from what was originally said. Something like that seems to have happened within Islam. The Prophet of Islam, Muhammad, brought one — and only one — religion. Yet today we have perhaps a thousand religions that all claim to be Islam.Divided by their different interpretations, Muslims do not play the role they once did in the world; instead, they are weakened and victimised. The Shia-Sunni schism is so deep that each side condemns followers of the other as apostates — kafir. The belief that the other's religion is not Islam, and its followers not Muslim, has underpinned internecine wars in which millions have died — and continue to die. Even among the Sunnis and Shias there are further divisions. The Sunnis have four imams and the Shias have 12; their teachings all differ. Then there are other factions, including the Druze, the Alawites, and the Wahhabis. We are also taught by our ulema (religious instructors) that their teachings must not be questioned. Islam is a faith. It must be believed. Logic and reason play no part in it. But what is it that we must believe when each branch of Islam thinks the other one is wrong? The Koran, after all, is one book, not two or three, or a thousand. According to the Koran, a Muslim is anyone who bears witness that "there is no God (Allah) but Allah, and that Muhammad is his Rasul (Messenger)." If no other qualification is added, then all those who subscribe to these precepts must be regarded as Muslims. But because we Muslims like to add qualifications that often derive from sources other than the Koran, our religion's unity has been broken. But perhaps the greatest problem is the progressive isolation of Islamic scholarship — and much of Islamic life — from the rest of the modern world. We live in an age of science in which people can see around corners, hear and see things happening in outer space and clone animals. And all of these things seem to contradict our belief in the Koran. This is so because those who interpret the Koran are learned only in religion, in its laws and practices, and thus are usually unable to understand today's scientific miracles. The fatwas (legal opinions concerning Islamic law) that they issue appear unreasonable and those with scientific knowledge cannot accept them. One learned religious teacher, for example, refused to believe that a man had landed on the moon. Others assert that the world was created 2,000 years ago. The age of the universe and its size —
[IslamCity] AMMAN BOMBINGS: CORPORATE MEDIA REVISES SCRIPT
Assalamu aleikum. From the article below: - Obviously, the attack in Amman was carried out by seasoned expertsalmost certainly Mossad (the attacks fit their modus operandi) ... - --- Amman Bombings: Corporate Media Revises Script Kurt Nimmo Friday November 11th 2005 http://www.kurtnimmo.com/?p=4 - photo: Amman Wedding http://kurtnimmo.com/images/ammanwedding.jpg - As more details about the Amman bombings emerge, the corporate media has gone into heavy-duty spin mode to shape events to the liking of the Bushcons and the Israelis. For instance, on the day of the bombing (November 9), Reuters [ http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9980123/ ] reported that the bombs at the Radisson were placed in a false ceiling, a rather difficult operation in a busy hotel and demonstrating the fact the bombers, who we are now told are Iraqi resistance fighters brainwashed by the dead cretin al-Zarqawi, would have obviously required serious cover of the sort enjoyed by a state intelligence service working in tandem with Jordanian intelligence (since Jordan is a police state with a democratic façade, according to a former cabinet minister [ http://www.rsf.org/article.php3?id_article=S87 ], sneaking explosives into a hotel that caters to affluent foreigners would have been, to say the least, difficult without government complicity and all but impossible for rag-tag Iraqi resistance fighters). In an effort to tighten the story and make it sound more plausible for the al-Zarqawi suicide angle, police sources [ http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20051109/ts_nm/security_jordan_dc;_ylt==Ask65GHFAaMs2kpzzrmUrL6s0NUE;_ylu==X3oDMTA3b2NibDltBHNlYwM3MTY- ] (most likely Jordanian police spokesman Captain Bashir al-Da'jeh) dismissed the ceiling story and introduced the more acceptable suicide bomber explanation later in the day on November 9. Now we are told the ceiling simply caved in as a result of al-Qaeda in Iraq suicide bombers. Suddenly everybody was on message. On November 10, the mythical al-Zarqawi, via the internet, claimed responsibility for the bombings in the moderate Arab nation that has fought a long-running battle against Islamic extremists opposed to its 1994 peace deal with Israel, according to the Bush Ministry of Disinformation, Associated Press [ http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051110/ap_on_re_mi_ea/jordan_explosion ] division. Of course, in a monarchial police state run by Hashemites, accustomed to wielding dictatorial power through hereditary emirs, there is no such thing as moderate rule, but never mind. On the same day, thousands of Jordanians rallied in the capital and other cities shouting `Burn in hell, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi!' and the corporate media imparts the impression these protests were spontaneous when in factagain in a monarchial police statesuch independent action is impossible and is in fact organized by the government (thus the display of Jordanian flags and posters of King Abdullah II by citizens we are expected to believe love their corrupt king and his freedom-hating retinue). It is nearly vomit-inducing to witness the length the corporate media has gone to portray average Jordanians as kowtowing citizens of a moderate Arab country when in fact they are oppressed subjects ruled under a semi-constitutional monarchy installed by British invaders in 1921 as they went about carving up the Middle East after defeating the Ottomans. But then tribal and chieftain-based monarchy (especially the Hashemite version) is precisely what Israel and the United States have in mind for the Arabs and Muslims of the Middle East, so this compliant behavior by the corporate media is to be more or less expected. Now, with the ceiling story far behind usand the evacuation of the Israelis prior to the attack story all but extinguishedwe are told these al-Zarqawi suicide bombers included a husband and wife team and the terrorists carried out the Amman attacks with explosive belts after carefully staking out the hotels for a month, according to the Associated Press [ http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=04416 ]. Once again, all of this is absurd on its faceIraqis staking out hotels in a police state as if they were casually walking around Cleveland, Ohio, staking out the local Red Roof Innand no doubt the husband and wife team bit was thrown in for shock value, a gruesome stick-to-the-wall detail that tells us the Iraqi resistance (under the sway of the dead cretin al-Zarqawi) is brutal, cold-hearted, and above all nihilistic. It was believed to be the first time a married couple has carried out a suicide attack. The couple bombed the Days Inn after the woman `chose to accompany her husband to his martyrdom,' the statement said. Of course, we can expect more married couplessoon followed by fraternal and identical twinsto engage in such horrific violence against filthy Jews (according to the deceased al-Zarqawi) who are evacuated, leaving behind not only innocent Arabs attending a wedding party but also a number

Be sensible! You are getting nowhere. You must seek the company of a Shaikh who is learned in the law [hukm] and knowledge [`ilm] of Allah (Almighty and Glorious is He), and who will show you the way toward Him. Without seeing the successful [muflih], one cannot succeed. If a person does not seek the company of scholars who put their knowledge into practice [`ulama `ummal], he is a chicken from an egg abandoned by the rooster and the mother hen. Seek the fellowship of those who enjoy fellowship with the Lord of Truth (Almighty and Glorious is He). What each of you should do, when the night has grown dark and people have gone to bed and their voices are silent, is get up, take an ablution [yatawadda'], perform two cycles of ritual prayer [yusalli rak`atain] and say: "O my Lord, guide me to one of Your righteous servants near to You, so that he may guide me toward You and make me familiar with Your path." The instrument [sabab] is necessary. Allah (Almighty and Glorious is He) was quite capable of guiding [His servants] to Him without the Prophets [anbiya']. Be sensible! You are getting nowhere. You must awaken from your heedless folly. As the Prophet has said: If someone relies entirely on his own subjective judgement, he will go astray. Try to find someone who will be a mirror for the face of your religion [din], just as you look in the mirror to check the appearance of your outer face, your turban and your hair. Be sensible! What is this crazy foolishness? You say, "I don't need anyone to teach me," and yet the Prophet has said: The believer is the believer's mirror [al-mu'minu mir'atu 'l-mu'min]. When the believer's faith is sound, he comes to be a mirror for all creatures. They behold their religious faces [wujuh adyanihim] reflected in the mirror of his speech, every time they see him and get close to him. What is this craziness? Not a moment goes by without your begging Allah (Almighty and Glorious is He) to provide you with more than you already have to eat, to drink, and to wear, with more sexual opportunities and more income. These are not things that could increase or decrease, even if you were to be joined in your plea by every supplicant whose prayers are answered [da`in mujab]. Supplication [da`wa] will neither increase one's sustenance by so much as an atom, nor reduce it by an atom. This is a foregone conclusion [mafrugh minhu]. You must devote your attention to doing what you have been commanded to do, and to avoiding what you have been forbidden to do. You should not worry about that which is bound to come your way, because He guarantees that it will come to you. Allotted shares [aqsam] arrive at their appointed times, whether they be sweet or bitter, whether you like them or dislike them. The people [of the Way] attain to a condition in which they no longer have any prayer of supplication [du`a] or request [su'al] to make. They do not beg [in their prayers] to gain advantages, nor to get rid of disadvantages. Their supplication comes to be a matter concerning their hearts, sometimes for their own sake and sometimes for the sake of all creatures, so they utter the prayer of supplication without conscious premeditation [fi ghaiba]. O Allah, endow us with good behavior in Your company under all circumstances! [When the believer's faith is sound], fasting [sawm], prayer [salat], remembrance [dhikr] and all acts of obedience [ta`at] become second nature to him, mingled with his flesh and blood. Then he receives protection from Allah (Almighty and Glorious is He) under all circumstances. The restraint of the law [hukm] does not desert him, not for an instant, while he is on this course. The law comes to be like the vessel in which he sits, as he travels over the ocean of the power [qudra] of his Lord (Almighty and Glorious is He). He goes on traveling over it until he arrives at the shore of the hereafter, at the shore of the ocean of grace and the hand of nearness. Thus he is sometimes in the company of creatures and at certain times in the company of the Creator. His work and toil are with creatures, while his relaxation is with the Creator. [IslamCity] The entire political class in France has got it wrong - Tariq RAMADAN
- Original Message - From: Rizwan Juma To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, November 12, 2005 10:00 AM Subject: [ Ismaili Soul ] The entire political class in France has got it wrong - Tariq RAMADAN The entire political class in France has got it wrong 10 November 2005 par Tariq RAMADAN For almost two weeks now, violence had raged nightly in the suburbs of Frances cities. In response, the country has, for the first time in half a century, invoked a state of emergency. Its police are now armed with broad new powers; even as they try to calm rioters with promises of jobs and social programs, they are enforcing curfews, conducting raids without warrants, restricting media. The riots have destabilized the very heart of the Republic and raised a series of questions that must be faced head-on. The entire political class in France has got it wrong . Left and Right are struggling to grasp the scope of a phenomenon that will requires a veritable intellectual revolution in the way the terms of the debate are now posited. There can be no doubt that violence is no solution, that the destruction of public property, buses and cars must stop and wrongdoers punished. Nor is there any doubt that some young people are indulging in pure vandalism. Restoration of law and order is a priority, especially for residents of the suburbs - the first victims of the violence. The fact remains, however, that such measures will be ineffective if France fails to grasp the nature of the message that this orgy of violence is sending. Continuation of a head-in-the-sand policy toward the suburbs will ultimately have devastating consequences for social peace. France urgently needs rigorous criticism of the way in which its political and intellectual classes have for the last 15 years considered questions of the unity of the Republic, and how immigrants and their children are integrated. We have witnessed passionate (and repetitive) debates about secularism, schools, and the compatibility of Islam with republican values. French politicians and intellectuals have a surprising capacity to sustain these deafening debates for months about questions that are poorly expressed and/or have in fact already been resolved. The upshot is an unhealthy climate of general confusion concerning ways to deal with substantive questions - starting with this one: Will France finally realize that Islam is a French religion? Some religious questioning is important, to be sure (and Muslims themselves need to examine the issues). But will we ever finally hear that there is virtually a consensus among French people of Islamic faith that they are bound to strict and full compliance with the French Constitution and law? Surely this was established decades ago.Clearly Moslems must remain self-critical about literalist readings that encourage people to withdraw into themselves and tend toward radicalization and/or violence. But it is also essential for French society to overcome its own distrust by listening to Moslems, and by ceasing to require them to keep justifying themselves. The France of the new millennium needs the voice of a Jean Jaures, the French socialist leader who a century ago not only championed Alfred Dreyfus, he had the courage to say that religions did not in any way threaten the future of France. It is the mishandling of the social question that poses the real danger to the unity of the Republic. The Left is completely disconnected from reality on the ground. Its leaders, apparently concerned with maintaining a media presence and guaranteeing themselves time on TV screens, have created organizations that claim to "represent the suburbs" - but that in fact accept the terms of the political and media debates of the salons of Paris, terms in effect a thousand miles removed from the realities on the ground. Groups such as SOS Racisme and Ni Putes ni Soumises (both created by the Socialists) surf the media topics of secularism, Islam, integration and Islamization; listened to by the Parisian elite, they are ignored by the people they are supposed to represent. The president of SOS Racisme actually complained in the English newspaper The Independent that he had not been asked by the government to help it deal with the latest wave of violence : the Rightist current Government may be criticized for its ineffectiveness on social questions, but it cannot be accused of being misinformed about those voices that enjoy some legitimacy on the ground. The French tend to idealize the notion of " the unity of the Republic," but in social terms this unity is a myth. Debates about Islam, integration and immigration are ideological strategies to avoid facing up to reality - the reality that French citizens are treated as second-class citizens who are given inexperienced teachers in ghetto schools, substandard housing and little access to jobs. Under our very eyes, France is
[IslamCity] Re: Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, here I am stuck in the middle
Walaikum salam wa rahmatulah, Jazaks for your kind words and response. I don't intend to dwell on the point other than to make a few observations: 1. It is Allah Almighty who has given us the knowledge which enables us to calculate when it is the moon will and will not appear - this knowledge is gained from nowhere else, and it seems unfortunate that we can use this knowledge at any time of year, and do use this knowledge at anytime of year except when it comes to Ramadan 2. When you study further the reason behind Prophet Muhammad's statement about seeing the moon with your own eyes (or someone trustyworthy having seen the moon, or when the moon isnot visible to calculate it), the stress on the first command relates not to seeing the moon, but to have the validity of the moon being verified by someone trustworthy to ensure that people are not being decieved into anything 3. Ever picked up a calendar which uses the Islamic date system? Ever wonder why or how every day of every month is 100% accurate and no one in the world ever disputes the dates, yet, with Eid, and 'sighting of the moon' suddenly the Muslim world is in disagreement? Whether we see the moon or don't see the moon, to me is irrelevant, particularly living in the UK where we tend to have cloud cover most of the time anyway. When we are given the knowledge and wisdom and skills to understand exactly how to determine when we wil or will not have a new moon, and instead of using that knowledge choose to ignore it, to me, thats almost a slap in the face to God. And Allah know best. May Allah have mercy on us all, ameen. Wa salam, f --- In islamcity@yahoogroups.com, Syed Ghaziuddin wrote: To Brother Farrukh through Islamcity. Dear Brother in Islam Assalaam Alaikum, Your storry (not so long but fictious at the same time) has attracted me to reply you. You may agree with me if I say when a person speaks he speaks according to the level of knowledge and wisdom of his own personality. What I am writing here is also within the knowledge I gained upto now. My dear brother, when our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has said sight of the moon means one amongst us must see the moon with his eyes. If there is cloud cover and you are intended to see the moon with the help of any modern device it is a different story. In my opinion we can celebrate Eid only when we see the moon. Every society face problems of different type and if we have some problem we must sort it out according to the rulings of Islamic law. If we do not posses much knowledge it is the responsibility of the one who is knowledgeable and has an authority over the rulings of Islamic law. We, as common person, have to obey the orders of the authorities and that is our duty. Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) will ask the authorities on the day of judgement about their mistakes (if any). Beginning of every Arabic month is with the sight of the moon so also Ramadan. To add to your knowledge, learned people say that Arabic months can be 29 days or 30 days neither less nor more. Also no 3 months can be same i.e. 29 days 29 days 29 days. If last 2 months were 29 days the third month should be of 30 days. We should try to do our best in our own capacity and not intervene in the matters which should be decided by the authorities. According to my knowledge calculating the dates according to the position of moon is not allowed in Islamic law. If you take into account sight of the moon this will surely be a contradiction.
