One Rashad Khalifa is the propounder of number 19 theory, the so-called secret numerical code of the Quran which has been published in book form separately from USA under the title, The computer speaks: Gods message to the world. He claims that the Qurans code is founded in the number 19 and anyone who doubts the divine source of the Quran will be proved wrong by the number 19. This code number 19 theory has already been refuted by Maulana Abdul Quddus Hashmi, a Pakistan religious scholar of international repute in his paper The Holy Quran and the figure of 19 in a pamphlet Publication No 58 captioned PROPAGANDA AGAINST ISLAM AND HOW TO COUNTER IT by Mohammad Samiullah (Available from Siddiqi Trust, Nasim Plaza, Nishter Road, Karachi5 Pakistan). Philips, who embraced Islam has also dealt with the subject in his The Qurans Numerical Miracle: 19 Hoax and Heresy. Available from Abul Qasim Store, Palestine Street, Subaiey Center P.O. For a further study booklet THE QURAN AND THE FALLACY OF COMPUTER CONCOCTION may be obtained from Mujlisul Ulama of South Africa Post Box 3393 Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Khalifa is not an alim and as such not competent to translate the meaning of the glorious Quran. He has a Doctorate Degree in Chemistry and not in the Law of Islam or Shariah. There are even claims of some Muslims in the
USA who met him that Khalifa is in disguise a Roman Catholic Christian. The figure of 19 was sacred in old mythologies as in this figure are included the first unit of reckoning i.e. 1 and the last largest unit 9. An imposter Babk Khurami who was killed by his supporters in 223 AH propagated this notion.Unfortunately, 1st Edition of the pamphlet Al- Quran The Ultimate Miracle by Ahmad Deedat was published as far back as February 1979 by The Islamic Propagation Centre, Durban, South Africa which was subsequently withdrawn for obvious reasons and as far as this writer is aware it was not published again to date. Another Dr. Mohammad Khalifa, a scholar of Egypt (not to be confused with Rashad Khalifa) in his The Sublime Quran and Orientalism Second Edition of 1989 has also referred to and mentioned about mathematical analysis. (Published by International Islamic Publishers (Pvt) Ltd. III-E-2 Commercial Area, Nazimabad, Karachi Pakistan) At this time, the importance attached to the figure 19 in the context of the Holy Quran is the product of the missionary efforts of the Bahais (which has been included in the list of anti-Islamic movements by a Resolution of the Muslim World League). There are thousands of Bahais living in USA. According to their belief, the figure of 19 is the central core of the universe and its whole system. There ismain Bahai Center and /or Headquartersin New York and/or San Francisco, USA. In the words of Dr. Muhammad Iqbal: Any religious society historically arising from the bosom of Islam, which claims a new prophethood for its basis, and declares all Muslims who do not recognize
the truth of its alleged revelation as Kafirs, must, therefore, be regarded by every Muslim as a serious danger to the solidarity of Islam. This must necessarily be so; since the integrity of Muslim society is secured by the idea of the Finality of Prophethood alone.
Islam is essentially a religious community with perfectly defined boundariesbelief in the Unity of God, belief in all the prophets and belief in the Finality of Mohammeds Prophethood (Allahs peace and blessings upon him). The last mentioned belief is really the factor which accurately draws the line of demarcation between Muslims and non-Muslims and enables one to decide whether a certain individual or group is a part of the community or not

James Yee answers the headlines with his side of how a Muslim Army chaplain was charged with spying for al-Qaida at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp. In "For God and Country: Faith and Patriotism Under Fire," written with Aimee Molloy, Yee says that although he was a West Point graduate, he came under suspicion as a Muslim chaplain because of his religion. "We say that the war on terror is not against Islam, but that's not how it felt most days at Guantanamo," Yee writes. It was a desire to ease religious tensions that had led the third-generation Chinese-American from New Jersey into a career as an Army chaplain. He was serving at Fort Lewis, Wash., on Sept. 11, 2001. The terrorist attacks presented Yee with more opportunity to bridge cultural differences. By November 2002, he was the Muslim chaplain for Camp Delta at Guantanamo Bay, where about 700 enemy combatants were held all Muslims. He also served a small community of Muslim translators. Yee tells how prison conditions tore him between military loyalty and concern for brother Muslims. He describes how an us-vs.-them mentality led to everyday brutality in the cells. He reports complaints of abuse during interrogations amounting to torture. Yee calls himself a no-nonsense guy, and his story is presented in an easy-to-follow, mostly chronological account that at times seems almost too objective. Why wasn't he more outraged at frequent searches called "the credit card swipe" when guards would press their fingers into a detainee's buttocks? Why weren't other officers restraining aggressive guards in riot gear who would crush an inmate for refusing to cooperate? Although Yee supported the mission, his attempts to encourage tolerance raised suspicions. He and other Muslims working on the base became known as a clique. Yee describes how he found out later that some suspected they were a spy ring. He was pulled into the gulag Sept. 10, 2003, when leaving for a visit home to Olympia, Wash., where he was to meet his wife and daughter arriving from a stay in Syria. Yee describes how federal agents accused him of spying because some personal papers phone numbers, a to-do list, notes about Syria were mistaken for classified documents. He was taken to the Navy brig at Charleston, S.C., and held for 76 days in solitary confinement. It wasn't much different from Camp Delta, but now it was his skin the shackles were cutting into. "I was well aware of the irony," he writes. The charges, which carried a possible death penalty, eventually collapsed for lack of evidence. To cover its errors, Yee says, the military spitefully charged him with adultery and having pornography on his computer. The accusation pushed his wife to consider suicide. Yee maintained a professional distance as a chaplain, and that distance is evident in the reserved voice of the book. He also says his religion helped him control his emotion, and the book has a controlled tone. His strongest language is critical of "vindictive" military officers who pushed the sex charges. "I came to understand just how craven the people behind this ordeal were. This was just another attempt to turn public attention away from the real questions that my case raised civil liberties and what was happening inside Guantanamo and steer it toward accusations that would sensationalize the hearing and in the process humiliate me." His faith in Islam was strengthened during the ordeal. Eventually, all charges were dropped. Yee hoped to continue as a Muslim chaplain at Fort Lewis, but he describes a hostile environment. His career was over. He resigned, effective Jan. 7, 2005, and received an honorable discharge. Yee's book is an indictment. "How can we expect nations to join us in our war against terror when we are denying the detainees the very rights we claim to be fighting for abroad?" His experience raises troubling questions, among them: "Was I used as another means of creating fear in order to justify a need for more expansive executive powers?" Common Ground: Islam in open societiesByHera DianiUnited Press International PublishedDecember 30, 2005 JAKARTA--To be a good Muslim, it is far more virtuous and valuable to be in an open society, instead of living in a closed society where people are forced to follow the dictates of the religion, a prominent Thai Muslim scholar says. Surin Pitsuwan, a former Thai foreign minister, said here on Tuesday that every human being must be responsible for their own conduct and exercise free will. "In the teachings of the Koran and Hadiths, there is always room for human beings to take charge of their own affairs. This is an issue of accountability, responsibility, participation, as well as individual and collective
obligations," he said on the sidelines of a discussion on Islam and democracy in Southeast Asia, which was sponsored by the International Center for Islam and Pluralism (ICIP). Democracy, he said, demands that every person is aware of that responsibility, participation and contribution. "Prophet Muhammad is a model of the perfect human being for every Muslim. We have to try to approximate that by taking our responsibility seriously, which can only be fulfilled in an open society," Surin said. The aspect of secularism is therefore necessary in this era of modernity and globalization, he added. "(But) total separation between religion and state, like what exists in Europe won't work here (in
the region). It's not secularism in the sense that you have no consideration for religion, but in the sense that every religion is equal and protected under the law," he said. In Thailand, Surin said, secularism was a necessity for minorities to play a role in the society. "For the Muslim minority, it's not a choice of whether or not there is an Islamic state. Let the majority rule, but let the minority take a role as well. Every society must deal with social deviance, minorities who deviate from the majority." ICIP chairman Syafii Anwar highlighted in his paper the growing number of Muslim politicians and activists who had changed their responses and shifted strategies concerning the democratic system. Nonetheless, challenges and problems still exist, as
revealed by a Freedom House survey in 2002, as among Muslim countries, only 11 out of 47 states (23 percent) could be grouped as democratic states, with their governments elected democratically. The survey also showed that there was a "democracy deficit" in certain Muslim states controlled by authoritarian regimes. Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi once confirmed that many governments in Islamic states have manipulated religion as justification for their tyranny and despotism, practicing authoritarianism and condoning human rights violations in the name of Islam and holy struggle. "Not only is democratization a must and precondition of a modern and civilized world, but it is in line with the spirit and purposes of sharia, that is to uphold a just society," Syafii said.
With the challenges of radical movements that hamper democracy, Surin said that a long process of education, social transformation and empowerment, as well as leadership was necessary to create an open society. "Pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) must realize these challenges and transform their mindset and mentality. We can't be too dogmatic or too monopolistic in our approaches. But I think the challenge of globalization has made the period more compressed, more urgent," said Surin. Saturday, December 31, 2005 VIEW: Muslims need to reach beyond the Ummah Farish A NoorLet us recognise that the War on Terror discourse signals the advent of the New Empire: A vast apparatus of geo-political domination, conquest and exploitation driven by Capitalist Imperialism as never before. The victim of this global onslaught on fundamental liberties is humanity as a whole and not just Muslims. We are not the only victims We live in an age where Muslims increasingly see themselves as the victims of an undeclared war on themselves, their religion, their culture and their way of life. Increasingly the Muslim world sees itself marginalised, isolated and discriminated against on a global level. The events that followed in the wake of September 11, 2001, have convinced many Muslims that theirs is a persecuted religion and that there is indeed a Clash of Civilisations in the making. Muslims now find themselves routinely harassed, monitored, policed. The reaction of the Muslim community has been diverse: some have opted to ghettoise themselves, closing into parochial and isolated communities with the hope of turning their backs to the world. Others have opted for the opposite extreme, calling on other Muslims to join them in an often indiscriminate 'jihad' against the rest of the world the West in particular. Faced with the prospect of defeat, Muslims are asking: "What is the victory of Islam?" Here I state my own position on the matter, beginning with a few cautionary qualifications to serve as premises: Let us be clear on this matter: The victory of Islam should NEVER be equated with the victory of Muslims. And the victory of Muslims does not necessarily mean a corresponding victory for Islam... All too often we hear of Muslim groups that call on their brethren to take part in some or other ill-conceived jihad against the West. Often this jihad is also directed towards other Muslims whom the pharisees denounce as traitors, apostates and hypocrites, following the logic of takfir. Those who sound this clarion call for aimless violence and bloodshed are often labouring under the mistaken impression that Islam will be served only when the banners of the Ummah are flying high over the capitals of Europe and North America. In their naive and shallow understanding of Islam they see a war of all against all as the only solution and regard wanton bloodshed and slaughter as legitimate tools for struggle, regardless of the victims. Let me pose this question to them: was the victory of Saddam Hussein over Kuwait a victory of Islam? Was Saddam's gassing of the Kurds a victory of Islam? Was the slaughter of Shia Muslims at the hands of Mullah Omar's CIA-funded Taliban a victory of Islam? Not surprisingly, the bloodthirsty hotheads among us have remained silent in such cases when Muslims were blatantly guilty of murdering other Muslims. Why have they been equally silent in cases of Muslim cruelty and violence meted out upon innocent people of other faiths? The victory of Islam, it should be noted, is not necessarily the victory of Muslims. A victory for Islam is secured only if and when the universal values of Islam are realised in the wider context, and Islam's struggle for justice, human dignity, equality of gender and races, transparency and accountability, are achieved in a context that extends beyond the limited frontiers of the Muslim community. But for this victory to be achieved, Muslims themselves need to look beyond the confines of their own community and to realise the truth uttered by the late Indonesian Islamist intellectual Nurcholish Madjid who stated that "being a Muslim is not like being a member of a club or tribe, it is a state of being, an existential truth." We are not a tribe at war against other tribes. There is no membership card to being a Muslim. Realising this means that Muslims need to acknowledge that their identities are fundamentally socially-constructed and that they are social beings. Society here means civil society as a whole, and not simply Muslim society. The tendency of Muslims to hide in their self-made ghettos, turning their backs to a world they deem is hostile, is not only analytically false, but also morally unsound and ultimately self-defeating. Today the Muslim world feels itself held captive to a host of variable factors beyond our control. The most devastating of these is the War on Terror discourse that has invaded our lives, reconstructed our identities, redefined our being and place in this world and robbed us of our dignity, rights and sense of place. On their own, Muslims will not be able to counter the negative stereotypes of the War on Terror discourse simply because it has been hegemonised to the extent that it now saturates global political and mediatic discourse. How then can we struggle against it? To struggle for justice in an increasingly polarised, militarised and authoritarian world means having to reach beyond our own

Bismillah hir Rehman nir RahimThe Virtues of the Ten Days of Dhul HijjahAmong the special seasons of worship are the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, which Allaah has preferred over all
the other days of the year. Ibn Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him and his father) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allaah than these ten days." The people asked, "Not even jihaad for the sake of Allaah?" He said, "Not even
jihaad for the sake of Allaah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and came back with nothing." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 2/457).Ibn Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him and his father) also reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "There is no deed more precious in the sight of Allaah, nor greater in reward, than a good deed done during the ten days of Sacrifice." He was asked, "Not even jihaad for the sake of Allaah?" He said, "Not even jihaad for the sake of Allaah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and came back with nothing." (Reported by al-Daarimi, 1/357; its isnaad is hasan as stated in al-Irwaa, 3/398).This season of worship brings many benefits, such as
the opportunity to correct ones faults and make up for any shortcomings or anything that one might have missed. The happy person is the one who makes the most of these special months, days and hours and draws nearer to his Lord during these times through acts of worship; he will most likely be touched by the blessing of Allaah and will feel the joy of knowing that he is safe from the flames of Hell. (Ibn Rajab, al-Lataaif, p.8)The Muslim must understand the value of his life, increase his worship of Allaah and persist in doing good deeds until the moment of death. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): "And worship your Lord until there comes unto you the certainty." [al-Hijr 15:99] The mufassireen (commentators) said: "The certainty means death." The Types of Worship to be Performed During these Ten DaysOne must understand that these days are a great blessing from Allaah to His slave, which is appreciated properly by the actively righteous. It is the Muslims duty to appreciate this blessing and make the most of the opportunity, by devoting these
ten days to paying more attention to striving hard in worship. Among His blessings to His slaves, Allaah has given us many ways in which to do good and worship Him, so that the Muslim may be constantly active and consistent in his worship of his Lord. Among the good deeds which the Muslim should strive to do during the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are: Fasting. It is Sunnah to fast on the ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) urged us to do good deeds during this time, and fasting is one of the best of deeds. Allaah has chosen fasting for Himself, as is stated in the hadeeth qudsi: "Allaah says: All the deeds of the son of Adam are for him, except for fasting, which is for Me and I am the One Who will reward him for it." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 1805).The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast on the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah. Hunaydah ibn Khaalid reported from his wife that some of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings
of Allaah be upon him) said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast on the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah, on the day of Aashooraa, on three days of each month, and on the first two Mondays and Thursdays of each month." (Reported by al-Nisaai, 4/205 and by Abu Dawud; classified by al-Albaani as saheeh in Saheeh Abi Dawud, 2/462). Azkaar. It is Sunnah to say Takbeer ("Allaahu
akbar"), Tahmeed ("Al-hamdu Lillaah"), Tahleel ("La ilaha ill-Allaah") and Tasbeeh ("Subhaan Allaah") during the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, and to say it loudly in the mosque, the home, the street and every place where it is permitted to remember Allaah and mention His name out loud, as an act of worship and as a proclamation of the greatness of Allaah, may He be exalted. Men should recite these phrases out loud, and women should recite them quietly. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): "That they might witness things that are of benefit to them (i.e., reward of Hajj in the Hereafter, and also some worldly gain from trade, etc.), and mention the name of Allaah on appointed days, over the beast of cattle that He has provided for them (for sacrifice)..." [al-Hajj 22:28] The majority of scholars agree that the "appointed days" are the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, because of the words of Ibn Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him and his father): "The appointed days are the first ten days (of Dhul-Hijjah)."
