Guardian In the 12th century, Peter the Venerable, Abbot of Cluny, 
initiated a dialogue with the Islamic world. "I approach you not with arms, but 
with words," he wrote to the Muslims whom he imagined reading his book, "not 
with force, but with reason, not with hatred, but with love." Yet his treatise 
was entitled Summary of the Whole Heresy of the Diabolical Sect of the Saracens 
and segued repeatedly into spluttering intransigence. Words failed Peter when he 
contemplated the "bestial cruelty" of Islam, which, he claimed, had established 
itself by the sword. Was Muhammad a true prophet? "I shall be worse than a 
donkey if I agree," he expostulated, "worse than cattle if I 
assent!"
Peter was writing at 
the time of the Crusades. Even when Christians were trying to be fair, their 
entrenched loathing of Islam made it impossible for them to approach it 
objectively. For Peter, Islam was so self-evidently evil that it did not seem to 
occur to him that the Muslims he approached with such "love" might be offended 
by his remarks. This medieval cast of mind is still alive and well.
Last week, Pope 
Benedict XVI quoted, without qualification and with apparent approval, the words 
of the 14th-century Byzantine emperor Manuel II: "Show me just what Muhammad 
brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such 
as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." The Vatican seemed 
bemused by the Muslim outrage occasioned by the Pope's words, claiming that the 
Holy Father had simply intended "to cultivate an attitude of respect and 
dialogue toward the other religions and cultures, and obviously also towards 
Islam".
But the Pope's good 
intentions seem far from obvious. Hatred of Islam is so ubiquitous and so deeply 
rooted in western culture that it brings together people who are usually at 
daggers drawn. Neither the Danish cartoonists, who published the offensive 
caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad last February, nor the Christian 
fundamentalists who have called him a paedophile and a terrorist, would 
ordinarily make common cause with the Pope; yet on the subject of Islam they are 
in full agreement.
Our Islamophobia dates 
back to the time of the Crusades, and is entwined with our chronic 
anti-semitism. Some of the first Crusaders began their journey to the Holy Land 
by massacring the Jewish communities along the Rhine valley; the Crusaders ended 
their campaign in 1099 by slaughtering some 30,000 Muslims and Jews in 
Jerusalem. It is always difficult to forgive people we know we have wronged. 
Thenceforth Jews and Muslims became the shadow-self of Christendom, the mirror 
image of everything that we hoped we were not - or feared that we 
were.
The fearful fantasies 
created by Europeans at this time endured for centuries and reveal a buried 
anxiety about Christian identity and behaviour. When the popes called for a 
Crusade to the Holy Land, Christians often persecuted the local Jewish 
communities: why march 3,000 miles to Palestine to liberate the tomb of Christ, 
and leave unscathed the people who had - or so the Crusaders mistakenly assumed 
- actually killed Jesus. Jews were believed to kill little children and mix 
their blood with the leavened bread of Passover: this "blood libel" regularly 
inspired pogroms in Europe, and the image of the Jew as the child slayer laid 
bare an almost Oedipal terror of the parent faith.
Jesus had told his 
followers to love their enemies, not to exterminate them. It was when the 
Christians of Europe were fighting brutal holy wars against Muslims in the 
Middle East that Islam first became known in the west as the religion of the 
sword. At this time, when the popes were trying to impose celibacy on the 
reluctant clergy, Muhammad was portrayed by the scholar monks of Europe as a 
lecher, and Islam condemned - with ill-concealed envy - as a faith that 
encouraged Muslims to indulge their basest sexual instincts. At a time when 
European social order was deeply hierarchical, despite the egalitarian message 
of the gospel, Islam was condemned for giving too much respect to women and 
other menials.
In a state of unhealthy 
denial, Christians were projecting subterranean disquiet about their activities 
on to the victims of the Crusades, creating fantastic enemies in their own image 
and likeness. This habit has persisted. The Muslims who have objected so 
vociferously to the Pope's denigration of Islam have accused him of "hypocrisy", 
pointing out that the Catholic church is ill-placed to condemn violent jihad 
when it has itself been guilty of unholy violence in crusades, persecutions and 
inquisitions and, under Pope Pius XII,

Success in whatever we do depends on how clear we are 
on the objectives we want to achieve and how well we plan 
for it. Even a recreational activity such as going on a 
vacation takes much planning. It is not feasible for a 
person to simply just get up and depart to a vacation 
destination without planning, especially if one wants to 
have a good vacation or recreational activity. For example, if one 
is going to Disney World, usually planning is done months in 
advance of the trip. In addition to making traveling and 
accommodation arrangements, people consult friends, read 
literature and research on how to get the most benefit while 
there. Time and effort is spent deciding beforehand as to 
which rides should be given preference, which shows should 
be watched and which sites or theme parks should be visited, 
in what order and at what times of the day so that one can 
get the maximum benefit at minimum cost in reasonable time. 
People make significant efforts to plan the trip because it 
means so much to them to make such a 
trip.

What does Ramadhaan mean to you? Does it mean more to 
you than going for a vacation? Are you mentally and 
psychologically ready to attain all the goodness and 
blessings Ramadhaan has to offer? Are you then spending 
enough time and taking pains to plan how can you get the 
most benefit from the opportunity Ramadhaan affords you? 


Some people do plan for Ramadhaan, but that planning 
is only to the extent of who to invite for Iftaar, where to 
go for one, what special foods to prepare or how to get the 
best deal on dates and iftaar delicacies. But is this the 
type of outcome that is the objective of 
Ramadhaan?

The objectives of Ramadhaan are 
to:

Increase 
our Taqwa
* 
Make 
us more charitable  both financially and in our social 
dealings
* 
Develop 
patience and will power to resist temptations 

*Prepare 
us for our life-long Jihaad to remain steadfast on the path 
of Allaahs obedience 
*Strengthen 
our relationship with the Holy Qur-aan, celebrate its 
revelation; and 
*Thank 
Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta`aala for guiding us so kindly. 


So, 
what are the action plans you want to undertake during 
Ramadhaan so that when it departs, you have seen significant 
growth in your Taqwa, you are more giving, more patient, 
more able to resist personal desires and temptations, more 
involved in life-long Jihaad and more tuned to the Qur-aan?

ISLAMABAD, Sept 15: Muslim countries should have
nuclear weapons to deter their enemies, Malaysias former prime
minister Mahathir Mohamad said here on Friday, but added that his ideal would
be global nuclear disarmament.

Addressing a seminar, Mr Mohamad condemned US
foreign policy and Israel,
and said Muslims were enjoined by their faith to defend themselves.

They need to have nuclear weapons too, because only (through) the
possession of such would their enemies be deterred from attacking them,
he said in a speech titled Clash of Civilisations or Clash of
Interests.

Sharing the platform with Pakistan
Tehrik-i-Insaf chief Imran Khan, the 81-year-old former premier received warm
applause from the audience.

Answering questions later, Mr Mohamad said: If you allow Israel
to have nuclear weapons why shouldnt others?

While I think we should not be selective in determining which nations
should have, and should not have, I think the best thing we could do is to say
is that all nations should not have nuclear weapons and in particular this
very, very, very belligerent United States.

He was criticising the US
over the Iraq
war, saying far fewer Iraqis would have been killed under Saddam
Husseins dictatorship.

Is there a difference between being killed by democrats and being killed
by dictators? If only we could ask those who died.

Mr Mohamad also spoke of a Jewish conspiracy in the United
States, revisiting the subject of a speech he made in 2003 in which he

Its wide mouth empties its flow into the Atlantic Ocean where buoyant
whales and majestic icebergs drift throughout the summer months. The
river begins more modestly where the northern and southern shores of

the Great Lakes into the riverbed. We were born on the Canadian side of
the river, but the island on which we lived was closer to New York
State. This area is now called the Thousand

in jannah.
Well, it really was beautiful. But we were,
after all, children of Adam. And as the angels
feared, we would make a mess of many things. To
begin with, there was the question of those indigenous people. As children, we spent long July afternoons on the
edge of the forest digging for their arrowheads, flints and pottery
shards. But where had the people gone? No one thought much to talk about our own Cain and
Abel story.
Then there was the question of what we did to
the river itself. Flowing over deep layers of
limestone, refreshed with generous rain and snow every year, the river
seemed impervious to anything we might throw its way. And
we did throw many things its way. In fact,
lacking refuse collection services on the island, it seemed easiest to
let the current take it away. I dont know
where all our tin cans and plastic wrappers ended up, but we
deliberately sunk the old car nearby in the bay to create a good
fishing hole. Little wonder that our children now catch only a few
small perch and a rare undersized bass in a day.
As hard as it is to believe, the truth is that
we did not realize that we were damaging the river, killing plant and
animal life, and poisoning others and ourselves. But as years passed,
and our exposure to information about the environment increased, we
became appalled at our previous behavior. We
had, after all, been taught that it is wrong to damage property and
harm others. We had internalized the
principles, we simply were not aware of the negative consequences of
our actions.
And so, as opportunities arose, some of us
planted trees, others cleaned up polluted sites, gave money to save the
rain forest and took up organic gardening. By this time, we had
scattered across the country, and even the world, and we took these
actions in the midst of our new communities. But the riverour
riveralways called us back. We wanted to be
there and make it better, but that would mean living and working
together for at least part of the year. This would not be easy.
After all, the years had witnessed other
changes in us. By the time we had become aware of our need to relate to
the river in a new way, we had taken different spiritual paths. Certainly the Muslim in the family found ample
proof in Islam that she had an obligation to conserve and respect the
environment. The Christians, Jews and secular
humanists found their own proofs for similar, if not identical
obligations. But there were many other things
we did not agree about. In fact, at times there were some serious
disagreements and tension.
This is my story. It
is also the human story. Muslims believe that
the children of Adam do not inherit sin from their ancestors. But we do inherit the good that our ancestors have
bequeathed to us, and we are burdened with repairing what they have
damaged. In our time, in every place that
Muslims live, whether the Muslims are the majority or the minority,
there are serious societal problems that need to be addressed. The environment needs to be restored, indigenous
and other minority groups need to be relieved of the burden of years of
systematic injustice, children and the poor need daily support and
meaningful opportunities for advancement.
The Prophet Muhammad, may Gods peace and
blessings be upon him, told his Companions that There will come a time
when the best property of a Muslim will be the sheep he takes to the
mountain peaks and watered lands, fleeing with his religion from
tribulation. But such a flight is a last
resort, to be taken only when it is impossible to hold onto ones faith
while remaining in society. Over the centuries, Muslims have lived
through times when this was the only option. But
sooner or later, they came back down the mountains and started the hard
work of living and rebuilding together. The
question now for our community is, when are we obliged to worked with
non-Muslims to build a better society, and when are we obliged to limit
our work to whatever we can accomplish on our own?
Clearly, there is no simple answer to these
questionsdespite the claims of those who confuse isolation with piety
or those who confuse every ease with goodness. Not
every alliance between Muslims and non-Muslims is bad, nor is every
alliance good. In trying to

  The Muslim Brotherhood on Sunday September 17, 2006, released a 
  statement expressing its deep concern over reports of criminal assaults on 
  several churches in the West Bank, as well as reports imputed to an 
  unknown Iraqi organization threatening to target Rome and the Vatican in 
  retaliation to the Popes recent derogatory remarks against Islam and its 
  prophet (PBUH). 
  The statement, undersigned by MB Executive Member Eng. 
  Khairat el Shater, read as follows in partWe, 
  Muslim Brotherhood, would like to point out our very position as 
  follows:1-We expressly oppose the Popes offending 
  statements, which shocked Muslims everywhere, and call on him to renounce 
  them. 2-While the Muslim Brotherhood is aware of the 
  popes gross mistake, it, however, calls on Muslims everywhere to 
  observe civilized, peaceful means in their protests against these 
  statements, without attacking or threatening individuals or churches or 
  religious icons anywhere in the world. We see such attacks as taboo in the 
  sight of all Heavenly religions.3-The 
  Muslim Brotherhood strongly condemns the incidents of assaults on churches 
  in the Western Bank,and consider these attacks criminal 
  actionswhichundermine the Palestinian cause. 
  Therefore,we call on the Palestinian government tobring 
  to justice those responsible for these 
  attacks. 
  4-The group highlights that the statements made by the Pope 
  are aimed to mar the image of Islam which enjoins dialogue and peaceful 
  coexistence with 
  others. 
  5-The Muslim Brotherhood sees dialogue as the best means to 
  refute the Popes claims, inaccordance with the teachings of the 
  Qura'n which enjoins Muslims to observe the ethics of dialogue with the 
  other.

The French hijab ban has deepened the
isolation of the French Muslims.
PARIS A French law banning hijab in state schools has
deepened the Muslim isolation from the broader community, experts said
Saturday, September 16.
"Some (Muslims) are enrolled in informal parallel
structures. That makes them even more isolated from the broader
community," said Samy Debah, spokesman for the anti-Islamophobia group
CCIF, reported Agence France-Presse (AFP).
France has triggered a controversy in 2004 by adopting a
bill banning hijab and religious insignia in state schools.
French Muslims a sizeable six-million minority along
with practicing Jews, Sikhs and international human rights groups strongly
condemned the law, saying it violated the freedom of religion right in
secular France.
In the same year, some 30 girls under the age of 16
dropped out of the French school system altogether, said Nora Rami
spokeswoman for a committee opposing the law.
She said the number, though is tiny compared to the
hundreds o thousands of Muslims in French schools, has a major
significance.
It illustrates a "break between some young Muslim women
and a country where "they no longer feel at home," she said.
Other young Muslim women have also either left to study
abroad, including in Belgium, or have signed up for distance learning
courses, Rami added.
Islam sees hijab as an obligatory code of dress, not a
religious symbol displaying ones affiliations.
Problems Deepened
Many French Muslims believe the French law would lead to
a boom in private Muslim education in the coming decade.
"This hasn't solved the problem, it has just moved it
elsewhere," said Makhlouf Mameche, deputy head of the private Lycee
Averroes in the northern city of Lille, one of France's two sole Muslim
high schools.
The French education ministry says the law has been
largely accepted in the country, citing only four cases since the start of
the school year this month, involving Sikh pupils who refused to remove
their turbans.
The government says the figure -- a far cry from the 639
recorded in 2004, when 47 youths were expelled for refusing to comply with
the ban -- is proof the measure is working.
But Hubert Tison, a teachers' representative,
disagrees.
"It's true the law reduced tensions, but it has not
solved the deeper problems" he told L'Express magazine recently.
Over the past decade, more and more French Muslims have
increasingly adopted hijab, especially in run-down suburbs with large Arab
and black populations.
Many, however, complain that they face hostile looks from
strangers who associate their hijab with terrorism and extremism.

But, in our haste to adapt, we forget that saying As-Salaamu Alaikum is the best greeting there could ever be. This was the practice and teaching of Prophet Muhammad (Sal
Allaahu Alaihi wa Sallam), the best example for mankind. And it was Allaah Himself that prescribed the manner of greeting among Muslims as As-Salaamu Alaikum [not salaams or good morning or hey or hi or whatever] When those who believe in Our Ayaat (proofs, verses, signs, etc.) come to you, say: "Salaamun Alaikum" (peace be on you).. (Surah al-Anaam:54)Ibn al-Qayyim says:Allaah, the Sovereign, the Most Holy, the Peace, prescribed that the greeting among the people of Islam should be As-Salaamu Alaikum, which is better than all the greetings of other nations which include impossible ideas or lies, such as saying, May you live for a thousand years, or things that are not accurate, such as Anim sabaahan (Good morning), or actions that are not right, such as bowing in greeting. Thus the greeting of salaam is better than all of these, because it has the meaning of safety which is life, without which nothing else can be achieved. (Badaai'
al-Fawaaid) As-Salaamu Alaikum is the best DuaThe word salaam comes from the root salema, which implies to disassociate oneself from evil and harm. Thus, when we greet other Muslims, the greeting means: No harm shall come to you from me (may no evil come to you, may no harm come to you)And since As-Salaam is also one of the Beautiful Names of Allaah, the greeting of salaam also means, May the blessing of His Name descend upon you, may Allah be with you, may Allah guide and protect you.Subhaan Allaah! What a beautiful
greeting!Yet, it is utterly tragic to see that some of us have exchanged something so beautiful for something ugly, when we stopped saying Assalaamu Alaikum and started with Good Morning or Hi. It is especially sad to see some of our youth, who dont even know how to say the words clearly and properly. Some say Saakum, some just mumble something incomprehensible under their breath and some dont even bother to say anything at all! And if they are being really nice to you, they just might throw you a hey from afar.And even those of us who do say salaam, some of us are so stingy or hesitant in doing so. Although, at the time of the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) the Sahaabah would compete with each other to see who could give salaams first. They would go to the market just to say salaam to people they knew and to the people they did not know.The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "The best of the two persons is the one who begins
with salaam." (Related by an-Nawawi)BENEFITS OF AS-SALAAMU ALAIKUM 1.As-Salaamu Alaikum is a means of immense rewardA man passed by the Messenger of Allaah (Sal Allaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) while he was sitting with others, and said As-salaamu alaykum.
