Bismillah [IslamCity] A Muslim Philanthropic Culture

2009-01-19 Thread saiyed shahbazi
A colleague once told me of a hospital that had designed a state-of-the-art
multifaith room with funds from donors of the various faith communities in
Toronto. The walls of the room were etched with the names of donors, few of
whom were Muslims. And yet, he said, Muslims were the ones who used the space
most often. There is much to admire of those individuals who are able to
recognize the worth of the communities within which they live and are willing
to lend their support in whatever way possible. If only Muslims would compete
with the ‘yahood’ in this way.

If we wish to compete then we have a lot of work to do. In a piece last year
dealing with some of the issues or challenges faced by ‘religious
philanthropy’, Philanthropy Magazine noted the scope of Jewish giving:

Two studies, both conducted in recent years but with different methodologies,
show that Jewish philanthropists contribute the overwhelming majority of their
dollars to universal, rather than Jewish, organizations and causes. In 1998,
professor Jack Wertheimer studied the 232 foundations in America that
self-identified as giving at least $200,000 to Jewish causes. He found that
even these foundations gave nearly two-thirds of their annual funding, $487
million, to non-sectarian causes. Similarly, a 2003 report by Dr. Gary Tobin
and colleagues at the Institute for Jewish and Community Research examined the
865 philanthropic gifts of $10 million or more made by all American donors
between 1995 and 2000. While nearly 25 percent (188 gifts totaling $5.3
billion) were made by Jews, the Jewish mega-givers made fewer than 10 percent
of their gifts to Jewish or Israeli organizations. While these two studies do
not represent the full panoply of Jewish giving, most
of which is by individuals giving much less than $10 million, it seems likely
that the data capture the overall thrust of giving by Jews.
In Australia, Australian Jews have also been at the forefront of charitable
giving. Organisations such as the Pratt Foundation, Smorgan Family Foundation,
Besen Family Foundation, and others, have contributed millions to health,
education and social welfare issues in this country. It takes only a casual
walk through any of our major hospitals or universities to see that the
contribution of Australian Jewry has been profound: the life of all Australians
has been enriched by the presence of Jews in Australia. This is, of course, to
say nothing of the equally profound intellectual contribution that Australian
Jews have made to academia.
The reasons for Jewish philanthropy are well outside the scope of this piece,
but perhaps one of the reasons is that Jews recognised, after centuries of
persecution, that one of the most important bulwarks that they have against a
repeat of past atrocities is to become active and valued members of the
society; members whose contribution and commitment are beyond question. When so
much of the infrastructure in a country owes itself to the kindness of its
Jewish minority, it would be difficult for some demagogue to make the case that
Jews are a ‘threat’ that must be eliminated.
Interestingly, the author of the article referenced above suggested that the
traditional Jewish philanthropic focus on ‘universal causes’ may be to the
detriment of issues specific to the Jewish community.

As we noted earlier, only a small proportion of Jewish philanthropy currently
flows to Jewish causes. Since nearly half of even this limited amount is sent
abroad (much of it to Israel), the resources available for Jewish needs in
America are minimal. If Jews today were more literate in their own traditions
and more successful in transmitting Judaism to future generations, then the
meagerness of charitable contributions for Jewish religious life, especially
Jewish education, would not matter as much. Sadly, the needs dramatically
exceed the available funding.
Muslims — at least, Australian Muslims — don’t face such a dilemma. Our
philanthropic contribution to this country has, in comparison, been rather
meagre. With few exceptions, one cannot recall any major fundraising effort for
a ‘universal cause’. However, in recent months, local groups have held
fundraising campaigns for everything from the families of some recently arrest
terrorism suspects to Egyptian orphans to building a mosque in the outer
suburbs of Melbourne to feeding poor Somalians. When it comes to giving, the
locus of concern for Australian Muslims seems to be ourselves — and, if not
ourselves, then our co-religionists abroad.
Is this a good thing? There are certainly good arguments for why Muslims should
also give towards projects that benefit the wider society: it demonstrates that
we are part of that society and share the same concern for bettering our
community; and we are ultimately working towards things that benefit us as
individuals, such as the extension of medical facilities or the development of
education instituti

Nobody is born learned. Learning is to be acquired. Ibn Abbas RA said: "To

Allah advised us to pray thus: "0 Lord, give us good in this world and good in

War crimes trials loom over Israel
 Wed, 14 Jan 2009 08:39:11 GMT
The Peace Palace, seat of the International Court of Justice, the Hague,
Netherlands
Israeli officials move closer to being prosecuted for human rights violations
by international courts as they continue their war on Gaza.

In its upcoming meeting, the UN General Assembly is expected to discuss
whether to seek advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice about
filing a complaint against Israel, The Guardian reported on Wednesday.

According to the British daily, a Foreign Office source has confirmed reports
that the UK government, under pressure from prominent law experts, may consider
supporting calls for a reference to the ICJ.

"It's definitely on the table… We have already called for an investigation and
are looking at all evidence and allegations,” the source told The Guardian.

The world's leading international lawyers have sent an open letter to British
Prime Minister Gordon Brown, calling for an end to Israel's human right
violations in the Gaza Strip.

"The United Kingdom government ... has a duty under international law to exert
its influence to stop violations of international humanitarian law in the
current conflict," reads the letter.

According to the lawyers, Israel has violated international humanitarian law
by directly targeting civilians and failing to discriminate between civilians
and combatants.

The special UN rapporteur on the Palestinian territories, Richard Falk, has
also criticized Israel for committing "crimes against humanity".

Falk, who himself is Jewish, has called on the International Criminal Court to
determine whether Israeli leaders and military commanders "should be indicted
and prosecuted for violations of international criminal law".

"There is a well-grounded view that both the initial attacks on Gaza and the
tactics being used by Israel are serious violations of the UN charter, the
Geneva Conventions, international law and international humanitarian law," Falk
says.
Falk has been expelled from Israel due to his criticism of Israeli policies
toward the Palestinians -- the natives of the land.

"There is a consensus among independent legal experts that Israel is an
occupying power and is therefore bound by the duties set out in the fourth
Geneva Convention. The arguments that Israel's blockade is a form of prohibited
collective punishment, and that it is in breach of its duty to ensure the
population has sufficient food and healthcare as the occupying power, are very
strong," he added.

Comments by the UN official come at a time that the UN Human Rights Council
passed a resolution on Monday condemning the "grave" Israeli human rights
violations against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Bismillah [IslamCity] Help of Allah

2009-01-19 Thread aasia shahana

Companions of the Prophet Muhammad ('alaihi salato was-salam) had a great
degree of faith. The Sahabah say to the Prophet (sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam):
"By Allah, if you were to ask us to cross this sea and you plunged into it, we
would plunge into it with you; not a man would stay behind". It is with this
faith that these men were prepared to do anything for Allah's Deen, without
worrying about the effects of any physical law. Because they know the reality
which we find difficult to accept. Ayaat of the Qur'an contain reality & wisdom
in them. Allah says: "Wainnahu lahaqqu al-yaqeen" "And Verily, it (this Quran)
is an absolute truth with certainty." [al-Haqqah - 69:51]. The laws contained
in this Qur'an are valid for all times to come, therefore we should never let
any doubt find way into our hearts. Observe the following.

"But those who knew with certainty that they were to meet their Lord, said:
'How often a small group overcame a mighty host by Allahs Leave?'
And Allah is with As-Sabirin (the patient ones)"
[al-Baqarah - 2:249]

"...And there is no victory except from Allah.
Verily, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise."
[al-Anfaal - 8:10]

"O you who believe! If you help (in the cause of) Allah,
He will help you, and make your foothold firm."
 [Muhammad - 47:7]

Whenever Muslims placed their Trust in Allah, Allah helped them. And whenever
they relied on the worldly materials and numbers, they were deprived of Allah's
help. Muslims lacked every material resource at Badr, but they were helped by
Allah because of their Faith in Allah. But in Hunayn Muslims were well equipped
in everything, however many of them relied on these resources until the earth
became tight for them and they realised that it is not the material things that
profit but it is the help of Allah that gives success. Therefore, a believer
does not rely on the material resources, even if the resources are in abundance.

Bismillah [IslamCity] Condemning of Vices

2009-01-19 Thread Khalid

Condemning of Vices

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all the worlds. Peace and
blessings be upon the Messenger, his household and companions.

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah as He should be feared. Piety is the best
earning and obeying Allaah is the greatest share.

Dear Muslims! At the end of the Time, there will be an increase in
the intrigues, and the forces of falsehood shall have evil designs.
The pious and faithful Muslims would increasingly be seen as
strangers; not of their lands but as regards their religion.
Everything has its sign and the sign of weakness of religiosity is
shameless and impudent committing of immoral acts.

Strangeness of Islaam lies in diminishing it, violating its
teachings, abandoning its commandments, taking its injunctions for
granted, failing to help its cause and scorning its sanctities. It
also includes committing major sins, being negligent to the point of
committing sins and acts of debauchery with impunity, social and
moral degeneration, disrespecting the law of Islaam and its
regulations, publicly perpetrating heinous deeds and all that is
unjustifiable in the eye of Islaam.

Other manifestations of strangeness of Islaam in this age are
prevalence of obscene and indecent people and obliteration of the
practise of promoting virtues and preventing vice so much so that
nothing remains of this practise but its figure. There is also
widespread submission to desires, corrupt intentions, deviant
opinions, and erroneous fatwas; compromising views of the indulgent,
contradicting the texts of the Qur'aan and the Sunnah and going
against the consensus of the Ummah. All this is done under the guise
of noisy misinterpretations, fake slogans of reform and change and
philosophies that are not backed by the teachings of Islaam, being
created by light-headed hypocrites who are foot-soldiers of Satan and
enemies of Islaam, chastity and virtue, and advocates of
licentiousness and misguidance. The Messenger of Allaah said the
truth when He predicted, "Islaam started as a strange religion and it
shall return into a strange religion as it was. Blessed be the
strangers." (Hadith Muslim)

Blessed are you, those who hold fast unto the teachings of Islaam at
this time of trials! Blessed are you, those who are acting by the
Sunnah of the noble Prophet, Muhammad at this time of crises!

Fellow Muslims! Strangeness of Islaam in the lands of the Muslims
started when sinners flagrantly committed sins and mischief while
some people look elsewhere with indifference and others supporting
them, to the detriment of the Islaamic teachings. Ibn Battaal
said, "Committing sins openly is tantamount to mocking the right of
Allaah, His Messenger and the right of the righteous Muslims. It is
also a kind of rebellion against them."

Fellow Muslims! Failing to speak against flagrant sinners is a
blemish on the followers of Islaam. It is an indication of their
flawed allegiance to the religion of Allaah and their fighting to
elevate His Word and the Sunnah of His Messenger. It is a sign of
their weak faith and their defective trust in Allaah. Allaah says,

"The believers, men and women, are Auliyâ' (helpers, supporters,
friends, protectors) of one another, they enjoin (on the people) Al-
Ma'rûf (i.e. Islaamic Monotheism and all that Islaam orders one to
do), and forbid (people) from Al-Munkar (i.e. polytheism and
disbelief of all kinds, and all that Islaam has forbidden); they
perform As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât) and give the Zakât, and obey
Allaah and His Messenger. Allaah will have His Mercy on them. Surely
Allaah is All-Mighty, All-Wise." (Quran At-Tawbah 9:71)

In the above verse, Allaah regards promoting virtues and preventing
vices one of the first and most prominent characteristics of the
believers. The Messenger of Allaah said, "He who amongst you sees
something abominable should modify it with the help of his hand; and
if he has not strength enough to do it, then he should do it with his
tongue [by speaking against it], and if he has not strength enough to
do it, (even) then he should (abhor it) from his heart, and that is
the least of faith." (Hadith Muslim)

Ibn Mas'ood narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, "Never a Prophet
had been sent before me by Allaah towards his nation who had not
among his people disciples and companions who followed his ways and
obeyed his command. Then there came after them their successors who
said whatever they did not practise, and practised whatever they were
not commanded to do. He who strove against them with his hand was a
believer: he who strove against them with his tongue was a believer,
and he who strove against them with his heart was a believer and
beyond that there is no faith even to the extent of a mustard seed."
(Hadith Muslim)

Dear brethren! The one who fails to speak against vice when it is
being flagrantly committed and the one who covers the sinner up will
share in the consequences of that sin. Allaah says,

"And fear the Fitnah

Bismillah [IslamCity] antislam: USA Muslim beaten to death

2009-01-19 Thread Shahid
Police: Rochester man's killing in downtown alley was a bias crime
11/13/2008 - By Janice Gregorson

Rochester, MN

The beating death of a Somali man in a downtown alley has now been classified
as a bias crime by Rochester police.

But that won't change any of the charges filed against two 25-year-old
Rochester men, the county attorney says.

Adam Brandrup and Joshua Lee are each charged with second-degree unintentional
murder in the death of Muhidin Mumin, 42, who was found beaten to death in a
downtown alley in the early-morning hours of Oct. 1.

Members of the victim's family and the Somali community in Rochester have
contended from the beginning that this was a hate crime, based on the victim's
race.

The two suspects are white.

If police investigators make a determination that an offense is a bias crime,
it must be reported as such to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

That was done in this case on Nov. 4.

Police Capt. Brian Winters, who instructed police records staff to file that
notice with the state, is not in the office this week for comment.

This is the eighth offense reported to the state by Rochester police this year
as a bias offense. Others range from verbal abuse to aggravated assaults.
Racial bias is listed as the type of bias in six of the offenses.

The Minnesota Legislature passed a law in 1988 requiring peace officers to
report any incidents motivated by bias. The first full year in which
information was collected was 1989. Last year, statewide, there were 182 bias
offenses reported -- a 20 percent increase. Last year in Rochester, there were
three offenses classified as bias offenses. Two were based on race, one on
religion.

County attorney Mark Ostrem said the bias determination would not result in any
amendments to the criminal complaints against Brandrup and Lee. He said the
fact that the bias report has been made does not affect the charges or the
prosecution of the case. He said an allegation that a crime is motivated by
bias only elevates some otherwise misdemeanor assaults to gross misdemeanor
level charges; or some gross misdemeanor harassment charges to a low-level
felony. But, he said, bias, if proven beyond a reasonable doubt, could not
elevate the level of offense in cases involving charges such as second-degree
murder.

Brandrup is scheduled for an omnibus hearing on Dec. 9; Lee for an omnibus
hearing on Jan. 27.

Institute imposes dress code: No kurtas, pyjamas, burqas

We've heard of colleges imposing dress codes that proscribe revealing outfits
like sleeveless tops, tight T-shirts and short skirts. But, in a decision that
was not taken too kindly, the Babasaheb Gawde Institute of Technology at Mumbai
Central imposed a ban on students wearing kurtas, pyjamas and burqas inside the
institute.

The management of the institute posted a notice to the effect on Monday and
stated that the ban was being enforced with immediate effect. Students further
claimed that they were being disallowed from attending lectures and the
conflict came to a head yesterday morning when a group of irate parents and
students protested outside the college gates.

The management was forced to revoke the ban.

"They gave us no reason for the ban. This is our culture, our tradition. We are
being forced to stop wearing clothes that signify our identity. We would have
understood had the clothes been vulgar, revealing or offensive.
But what's the problem with kurta pyjamas?" asked an irate student.

"We should be allowed to wear what we are comfortable in," said another female
student.

R P Gawde, chairman of the governing body for the institute, said that the move
was introduced to foster a "secular feel in the classroom".

He added that security was another factor. "During a parent-teacher meeting
last year, in two separate incidents, male students brought female friends
wearing burqas to pose as their parents. We don't want to risk offending a
student in a burqa by asking her to prove her identity," explained Gawde.

He further stated that the ban had been in the code of conduct since the
inception of the institute a decade ago. "I am disappointed that our efforts to
give the college a more secular feel did not succeed. We will now introduce a
uniform dress code for students from the new academic year," said Gawde.

Israel hitting Lebanon with rocket fire
 Wed, 14 Jan 2009 08:04:51 GMT

Israel has reportedly fired at least seventeen rockets into southern Lebanon
within minutes after being hit by rockets from the country.

"Between one and three rockets were launched from an area four kilometers west
of the village of Shebaa and Israel responded within a minute with four rockets
that landed north of Ghajar," AFP quoted a Lebanese security official as saying.

Lebanon's LBC TV confirmed the firing of two rockets from Hassbia in southern
Lebanon into the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shmouna, saying Israel is
responding with continuous rocket fire.

Israeli jets violated Lebanese airspace following the incident.

Hezbollah and Palestinian factions have ruled out any involvement in the
rocket firing and there is speculation that people angry over the Israeli war
on Gaza have launched the attacks.

UNIFIL peacekeepers have also failed to comment on the incident so far.

Last week, four rockets were launched from southern Lebanon into the northern
Israeli towns of Nahariya and Galeli, wounding four Israelis.

Following the incident last week, the Israeli army fired five rockets on the
southern Lebanese towns of Hamra, al- Jiben, and Tayr Harfa, where the rockets
were believed to have been launched. However they landed in desert areas and
caused no damage or casualties.

The Lebanese Hezbollah said that it was not responsible for the rocket fire.
Tel Aviv later ruled out the possibility of Hezbollah being involved in the
incident, saying the rockets were of an outdated model that Hezbollah had not
used for years.

Referring to the UN Security Council Resolution 1701 that brought an end to
the Israeli 33-day war against Lebanon in 2006, Lebanese Information Minister
Tarek Mitri said, "Hezbollah has assured us that they remain committed to
stability and Resolution 1701, and that is a euphemism for saying they are not
involved".

The Hamas movement also denied allegations that it was behind the attack last
week.

No group had claimed responsibility for the rocket attacks. Since then Israeli
warplanes have intensified their overflights over southwestern Lebanon.

Bismillah [IslamCity] Please vote for this sister

No. Accomodations should have been made for her customs, beliefs.

 Original Message

As salaamu alaikum.

Many of you may be familiar with the lady in Georgia who was handcuffed, bought
before a judge and then jailed for for contempt of court when she refused to
remove her hijab at a security checkpoint. The story is on the "cover" of
MSN.com at: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28278572/?gt1=43001

Live vote: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28281703/

At this time, I am asking you to go to this site and vote at the "Live Vote"
section. You will have to cursor down a bit and click on the Vote section. On
Wednesday night, at 11:00 when I visited this site, the vote was 61% agreed
that the judge was correct and the woman should go to jail. I could not believe
the response, especially since in Northern New Jersey Muslim women who wear
head scarves are a part of every aspect of public society -- even security
guards in Federal Buildings. Whether or not you are a hijabi or of the Islamic
faith, please take a moment and vote. This is just one way that you can express
your outrage. As most of you may have also thought, if the lady was a nun, or a
"natural blonde" with her hair peeking out of a scarf, it is highly unlikely
that this incident would have taken place. If a Jewish or Sikh man had tried to
pass through the security check point, would they have been asked to remove
their head covering? Are there

rules posted at the security check point in question instructing every visitor
that they will be required to remove any and all headcovering? This is one of
those rare times that I am also asking you to send this e-mail to 5 or 10 other
friends and ask them to vote for our sister. The possible good result will be
that the public will get a more accurate "non-scientific" count of what freedom
loving Americans think, as opposed to the current racist, biased, Islamiphobic
views that permeate the internet.
