> Concurrent modifyTable or add/delete/modify columnFamily leads to incorrect
> result. After HBASE-18893, The behavior of add/delete/modify column family
> during concurrent operation is changed compare to branch-1.When one client
> is adding cf2 and another one cf3 .. In branch-1 final result will be
> cf1,cf2,cf3 but now either cf1,cf2 OR cf1,cf3 will be the outcome depending
> on which ModifyTableProcedure executed finally.Its because new table
> descriptor is constructed before submitting the ModifyTableProcedure in
> HMaster class and its not guarded by any lock.
> *Steps to reproduce*
> 1.Create table 't' with column family 'f1'
> 2.Client-1 and Client-2 requests to add column family 'f2' and 'f3' on table
> 't' concurrently.
> *Expected Result*
> Table should have three column families(f1,f2,f3)
> *Actual Result*
> Table 't' will have column family either (f1,f2) or (f1,f3)

> I've tried to make a patch for HBASE-21879, most of work seems to be fine,
> but the trouble is:
> HFileBlock#validateChecksum can only accept ByteBuffer as its input, while
> after the HBASE-21916, we will use an ourself-defined ByteBuff (which can be
> SingleByteBuff or MultiByteBuff).
> Now, need to create our own ByteBuff checksum validation method, should not
> be so hard but an separate issue will be more clearer.

[jira] [Created] (HBASE-21979) Also send requests to secondary replicas if primary replica fail within the timeout

2019-03-01 Thread Duo Zhang (JIRA)
Duo Zhang created HBASE-21979:
-

 Summary: Also send requests to secondary replicas if primary
replica fail within the timeout
 Key: HBASE-21979
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-21979
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Sub-task
  Components: asyncclient, Client
Reporter: Duo Zhang

For now we will only request the secondary replicas if the primary replica does
not respond within the timeout. If it fails immediately we will finish the
request without sending requests to secondary replicas. This is different with
the sync client implementation. Let's change the behavior.

>      When running unit test on Windows, testGetPassword from
> TestHBaseConfiguration.java failed. The original code produces a uri path
> like "jceks://file/root/hbase/others" on unix system, but produces a invalid
> path like "jceks://fileD:\wordspace\hbase\others",which will cause a
> URISyntaxException latter.
>      To solve the problem, just add a "/" prefix to windows local path and
> replace all "\" with "/".

[jira] [Commented] (HBASE-21806) add an option to roll WAL on very slow syncs

It could be added as another jira. In our case we have many DNs so it's
unlikely. For small clusters it could be more likely, OTOH if the cluster is
really small it can cause problems with load skew on datanodes or even not
having enough to replicate after exclusions.

> In large heterogeneous clusters sometimes a slow datanode can cause WAL syncs
> to be very slow. In this case, before the bad datanode recovers, or is
> discovered and repaired, it would be helpful to roll WAL on a very slow sync
> to get a new pipeline.
> Otherwise the slow WAL will impact write latency for a long time (slow writes
> result in less writes result in the WAL not being rolled for longer)

Overall, docs of the {{hbase.bucketcache.ioengine}} config need to be updated
to cover the addition of pmem. e.g.

* hbase-common/src/main/resources/hbase-default.xml
* src/main/asciidoc/_chapters/hbase-default.adoc
* src/main/asciidoc/_chapters/architecture.adoc

Since we're building off of the mmap implementation we should probably
specifically call out that it's currently treated as non-persistent and e.g.
{{hbase.bucketcache.persistent.path}} doesn't matter.

in BucketCache.java
{code}
+} else if (ioEngineName.startsWith("pmem:")) {
+  return new PmemIOEngine(ioEngineName.substring(5), capacity);
 } else {
   throw new IllegalArgumentException(
   "Don't understand io engine name for cache- prefix with file:,
files:, mmap: or offheap");
{code}

Update IAE text to include pmem.

> In HFileBlock#readBlockDataInternal, we have the following:
> {code}
> @VisibleForTesting
> protected HFileBlock readBlockDataInternal(FSDataInputStream is, long offset,
> long onDiskSizeWithHeaderL, boolean pread, boolean verifyChecksum,
> boolean updateMetrics)
>  throws IOException {
>  // .
> // TODO: Make this ByteBuffer-based. Will make it easier to go to HDFS with
> BBPool (offheap).
>   byte [] onDiskBlock = new byte[onDiskSizeWithHeader + hdrSize];
>   int nextBlockOnDiskSize = readAtOffset(is, onDiskBlock, preReadHeaderSize,
>   onDiskSizeWithHeader - preReadHeaderSize, true, offset +
> preReadHeaderSize, pread);
>   if (headerBuf != null) {
> // ...
>   }
>   // ...
>  }
> {code}
> In the read path, we still read the block from hfile to on-heap byte[], then
> copy the on-heap byte[] to offheap bucket cache asynchronously, and in my
> 100% get performance test, I also observed some frequent young gc, The
> largest memory footprint in the young gen should be the on-heap block byte[].
> In fact, we can read HFile's block to ByteBuffer directly instead of to
> byte[] for reducing young gc purpose. we did not implement this before,
> because no ByteBuffer reading interface in the older HDFS client, but 2.7+
> has supported this now, so we can fix this now. I think.
> Will provide an patch and some perf-comparison for this.

> {code}
> for (TableName tableName : tableNames) {
>
>   if (groupName != null) {
> RSGroupInfo dst = new RSGroupInfo(newGroupMap.get(groupName));
> dst.addTable(tableName);

>   }
> }
> {code}
> It is to add the tables to "dst" (the destination rsgroup) and put it back to
> newGroupMap to replace the old RSGroupInfo instance in the map.
> The current logic allocates a new RSGroupInfo instance and calls put
> operation of map for each table to move, which is not needed and causes a lot
> of objects to be allocated (the constructor of RSGroupInfo allocates 2
> TreeSets).
> The logic could be improved as: allocate a new RSGroupInfo only once, add all
> tables, and put it into the map.

[~sershe] You saw ZKConfig? It extracts zk config from Configuration using
hbase.zookeeeper prefix. That help? Or could you get what you need adding here?

I used .003 for 2.0.5 [~psomogyi]. 2.0.4 adds handling of api report generation
and the update of CHANGES.md and RELEASENOTES.md. Need to test this version
generating new RC.

.005 fixes the api report generation problem [~Apache9] noted on the RC vote
thread.

> In HFileBlock#readBlockDataInternal, we have the following:
> {code}
> @VisibleForTesting
> protected HFileBlock readBlockDataInternal(FSDataInputStream is, long offset,
> long onDiskSizeWithHeaderL, boolean pread, boolean verifyChecksum,
> boolean updateMetrics)
>  throws IOException {
>  // .
> // TODO: Make this ByteBuffer-based. Will make it easier to go to HDFS with

> preReadHeaderSize, pread);
>   if (headerBuf != null) {
> // ...
>   }
>   // ...

> {code}

Now we have four types of RIT procedure metrics, assign, unassign, move,
reopen. The meaning of assign/unassign is changed, as we will not increase the
unassign metric and then the assign metric when moving a region.
Also introduced two new procedure metrics, open and close, which are used to
track the open/close region calls to region server. We may send open/close
multiple times to finish a RIT since we may retry multiple times.

> RSGroupInfoManagerImpl#moveTables() has the following code:
> {code}
> for (TableName tableName : tableNames) {
>
>   if (groupName != null) {
> RSGroupInfo dst = new RSGroupInfo(newGroupMap.get(groupName));
> dst.addTable(tableName);

> }
> {code}

> The spark/dev/create-release is more comprehensive than our hokey make_rc.sh
> script. It codifies the bulk of the RM process from tagging, version-setting,
> building, signing, and pushing. It does it in a container so environment is
> same each time. It has a bunch of spark-specifics as is -- naturally -- but
> should be possible to pull it around to suit hbase RM'ing. It'd save a bunch
> of time and would allow us to get to a place where RM'ing is canned,
> evolvable, and consistent.
> I've been hacking on the tooling before the filing of this JIRA and was
> polluting branch-2.0 w/ tagging and reverts. Let me make a branch named for
> this JIRA to play with (There is a dry-run flag but it too needs work...).

> RSGroupInfoManagerImpl#moveTables() has the following code:
> {code}
> for (TableName tableName : tableNames) {
>
>   if (groupName != null) {
> RSGroupInfo dst = new RSGroupInfo(newGroupMap.get(groupName));
> dst.addTable(tableName);
> newGroupMap.put(dst.getName(), dst);
>   }
> }
> {code}

There is no TRSP for branch-2.1 and branch-2.0. And this field is not used in
the code so just remove it, before we releasing 2.2.0.
