I looked at additional colors for transmitting/not-transmitting and 
enabled/disabled statuses. Here is what I propose:

In status bars (global and process group):
* When transmitting, not-transmitting, and disabled status is 0, change icon 
color to #aabec7
{color:gray}This is consistent with the other icons when at 0.{color}
* When not-transmitting and disabled status is > 0, change the color to #728e9b
* When transmitting status is > 0, change the color to #44a3cf
{color:gray}A bright blue color to set it apart from its inverse state.{color}

For the enabled status, like in Settings > Controller Services tab, State 
column, color the enabled icon #44a3cf.
{color:gray}The same bright blue color to set it apart from its inverse state 
This is consistent with the transmitting/not-transmitting status 
behavior.{color}

I'm also noticing that color:#aabec7 is not being applied to all icons in 
status bars when values are 0.  My thinking was this effect should be applied 
to icons like thread count and queue as well, so they still have some 
noticeable change.

Please pull this branch down locally and review. I would like to iterate over 
this and get some consensus before issuing a PR so feedback is most welcome!

Thanks [~patricker]. I'm still of the mindset to work introductions of color 
into to UI with a little more subtlety, hence the softer and more desaturated 
color palette. As we introduce more awareness into the UI to reflect status 
changes, bulletins, warnings, etc. I feel we'll need to be more selective in 
how and when we use vivid color.

run status such as the column in the Summary shell, and controller 
service/reporting task states in the Settings shell. Is that what you are 
thinking as well?

Hi all – I wanted to recommend icon colors for 'running, stopped, invalid, and 
disabled' statuses seen in the flow status bar. These same icons are seen on 
the faces of components so the idea is to use the same colors there as well. I 
believe this is all aligns with past discussion. We won't change colors on 
actions in palettes or context menus. This is purely for status-related icons 
to aid awareness for when things change.

I'm also recommending a unique style for all the icons in the status bar when 
values are 0. The thinking here is a change will be more obvious when going 
from 0 to 1 or more (or the opposite) and helps quickly distinguish differences 
while performing a visual scan across the bar.

See the attached mockup – *status-icon-color.png* – showing the 4 colored 
icons, ones with a 0 value, and examples of the colored icons on the face of a 
processor.

If there is some consensus on the proposed design I'll post color codes and 
other style-related details.

Sounds good.  We've been running a modified 1.0 with my UI Color branch merged 
into it. I've found that in many cases I agree with some of the guidance, like 
getting rid of color on mouseovers, they feel more distracting then anything 
now.

Also wanted to add an initial thought to see what others think...

We should consider alternative methods to alert status change _in addition to 
color_. On the status bar for example, given the proposed changes, once running 
processors are >0 the only status change will be the count increasing or 
decreasing. The color change will have already occurred.

Perhaps we can investigate using animation sequences from Angular or Font 
Awesome or even more obvious ones such as Angular Toast for those important 
alerts.

I like the suggested approach of only applying color to highlight status 
changes. The original idea behind the redesign was to neutralize the overall 
color of the UI so bulletins would be more obvious. The invalid state also 
shares this same color as it was agreed upon as another important fact to call 
out. I think we can start to bring back a bit more color, but want to make sure 
that the UI can still effectively call out these important, potentially more 
serious issues that a user may need to take immediate action on.

I'm onboard with using a red color to indicate that a processor is stopped, but 
that would help to draw attention to the fact that you have stopped processors. 
Generally, I don't think we should have processors stopped for a long period of 
time. If the idea is that we don't want the processor running for a long period 
of time, we should probably disable the processor. I've certainly seen cases 
though where we stop a processor to change configuration and then forget to 
start it again. So I think the red color on the graph would help with that.

However, the 'normal' case is for processors to be running, and personally I 
think it should stay the same color as it is now. I find the green to be a bit 
distracting because it stands out and draws attention to a 'normal' condition.

With respect to changing the 'warning' icon color from red to yellow, I 
personally prefer the red but don't have a strong preference.

I have taken a look at the work Patrick completed and I agree it is a great 
start! While I like the colors you have chosen for the play and the stop I am 
not too sure about the new yellow color for the warning and bulletins. I think 
we should open this discussion up and gain a consensus of what the final colors 
for these icons should be. 

I would also like to open a discussion pertaining to when it would be 
appropriate to color an icon. I feel like a good rule of thumb would be that we 
only change color for an icon that is reporting status AND that status provides 
valuable feedback worthy of drawing the attention from the user. What do you 
guys think? Check out the examples below to get a better idea of what I mean:

Ex 1: In the flow status bar across the top I think we should only apply the 
green color to the play icon if there is > 0 processors running and otherwise 
it should keep the current #004849. This way the users eye will be drawn to 
icons with color but we will not be drawing their eye to color that does not 
provide value.

Ex 2: In the ‘Operate Palette’ and the ‘Context Menu’ coloring of the play and 
stop button on hover is unnecessary as these buttons invoke an action but do 
not report status.

I have created a list of what the current color is and the colors proposed. 
Additionally, I have included the transmitting/not-transmitting icons as well 
as the enabled/disabled icons as these icons in the flow status bar and on the 
graph fall under the “reports status AND that status provides valuable feedback 
worthy of drawing the attention from the user”. I am not sure if we would want 
different colors for each of these??? …maybe we would want to reuse the CSS 
class .running to represent all positive icons like play, enabled, and 
transmitting and then use the .stopped class for negative icons like 
not-transmitting/disabled...should come up with better names if we go this 
route.

If anyone has other icons you think we should consider in this list please add 
to this discussion.

1. I like the strategy of creating several css classes that could be 
applied with !important as you did in common-ui.css with .running, .stopped, 
.invalid. each of these should have a color defined and a !important so to be 
sure to apply the color when the class is present. Then we should be able to 
conditionally apply these classes later on…
1. If it is decided that we should reuse the same colors for all 
positive icons (and vice versa) then the names of these CSS classes should 
probably change to reflect that…we wouldn’t want to apply the class .running to 
a transmitting icon.
2. Please remove div.context-menu-item.hover > 
div.context-menu-item-img.fa.fa-play and div.context-menu-item.hover > 
div.context-menu-item-img.fa.fa-stop styles as these buttons invoke an action 
but do not report status
3. flow-status.css
1. Remove the styles for #flow-status .fa.fa-*
2. We will also need to conditionally add .running/.stopped/etc. (or 
whatever the class names end up being) classes to the icons in the flow status 
bar. Look at nf-ng-canvas-flow-status-controller.js and add some logic to only 
apply the .running style to the play icon only if the value is greater than 0. 
Also will need to complete a similar task for each of the following flow status 
icons.

Peter,

Thanks for the screen shots depicting the changes you are proposing! I have 
done some analysis for this effort and it seems a bit more involved than just 
updating some CSS as we would probably want to conditionally show some color. I 
would say we should open this up for more discussion and welcome any other 
input pertaining to this. I'd be happy to pick this up but I think we need to 
ensure we are being consistent with the coloring throughout the app and as such 
I would say we should probably mark this for 1.1.
