It's also worth pointing out that Scala 2.10 is no longer maintained since
March 2015.

One reason to consider building with 2.11 by default in Jenkins and to switch
2.10 to a compile-only build is the better support for code coverage and static
analysis tools in 2.11: we can use abide, scapegoat, scoverage, etc. with 2.11,
but these tools don't work well / at all with 2.10.

I mean Spark downloads where they provide only 2.10 versions and propose to
build 2.11 from source. I think 2.11 should be default there

My two cents.

The only module that's not working for 2.11 is thriftserver and
kafka-streaming, as for Kafka they only started to support 2.11 from 0.8.2 and
Spark kafka module depends on 0.8.0.

It should be just a change in Kafka version to make it ready for 2.11. AFAIK,
0.8.2 client works well with previous 0.8.x server.

And we need to fix thriftserver build issue.

Spark is already cross-built for 2.10 and 2.11, and published separately for
both. I don't think 100% of Spark's dependencies and modules work with 2.11. Is
it causing a problem for end users? I had the impression this wasn't quite
ready to be the default.
