Build System

2001-06-14 Thread Jesse

I've been handed the responsibility of designing a new automatic build
process. Currently we use manually edited Makefiles for all or our C,
C++ & java code. We will be scrapping almost all of the C & C++, so that
it will be 90% java. I would like to make it easy on the other
developers, so that changes can be easily updated.

Any ideas on the best tools for this. I would like to have dependencies
built in so that incremental builds only recompile the code that has
changed. I will use Imake for the C & C++ so that is is portable (Win32,
Linux & Solaris) but I don't need to portability for the java stuff.

Thanks

jdk 1.1.7v3

1999-06-02 Thread Rick Jesse

Is there a doc that explains what the different files are in
the 1.1.7 v3 release. That is, a high level description of what is in each of
these files:

i18n_1.1.7-v3-glibc-x86.tar.gzjdk_1.1.7-v3-glibc-x86-native.tar.gzjdk_1.1.7-v3-glibc-x86.tar.gzjre_1.1.7-v3-glibc-x86-native.tar.gzjre_1.1.7-v3-glibc-x86.tar.gzrt_1.1.7-v3-glibc-x86-native.tar.gzrt_1.1.7-v3-glibc-x86.tar.gz

Also, where are the samples or demos. I downloaded jdk 1.2 and
there are a ton of samples in that release but I don't find any in
1.1.7.

Thanks!

RE: font problem

2001-02-08 Thread Jesse Stockall

"Font specified in font.properties not found [--zapf
dingbats-medium-r-normal--*-%d-*-*-p-*-adobe-fontspecific]"

If this is (or similar to) the error you are getting the fix is simple.

Copy "symbol.ttf" to the /j2re1.3/lib/fonts directory add the following line
to "fonts.dir"
"symbol.ttf -urw-symbol-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-ad
obe-fontspecific"
You also have to change the number at the top of fonts.dir to 13, as there
are now 13 fonts.

You can get symbol.ttf from a windows machine. Or contact me & I'll send it.

Binding a multicast socket to a port in use.

2001-03-12 Thread Jesse Erdmann

Hello all,

I'm trying to port a Java server from Windows to Linux. Both need to
be interoperable and the clients (Win*/Linux on x86) need to be able to
connect to either.

On the Windows platform, the developers were able to bind a
MulticastSocket to a port already in use by other (non-Multicast)
sockets. However, when the code tries to do this on Linux I get a
BindException: Address already in use. Of course, this doesn't happen
when I feed it a port not in use. However, this really isn't a viable
solution for various reasons (the process currently fails for other
reasons because of using a different port).

Does anyone have suggestions on how to fix this without resorting to
using a different port? Also, does anyone know specifically why this is
different between the two environments?

Thanks!

Re: InetAddress.getLocalHost() problems with Debian Linux

I think that the following the following should help sorting some of
these issues out. There are a variety of issues related to the way the
InetAddress object works. I personally was having a problem getting all
IPs for a multi-homed node, but I think that this also addresses the
issue that you're having. Anyway, supposedly a fix for this behavior is
coming with Merlin.

Yes this is a known issue with RedHat 7.1 & maybe others.

The workaround is this:

1. add this to your $JAVA_HOME/bin/.java_wrapper
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5

2. 1. Create a symbolic link from /bin/cut to /usr/bin/cut
    ln -s /bin/cut /usr/bin/cut

Add these two files to your jre/lib/fonts folder

The symbol.ttf is a true type font that can be grabbed from any Windows
machine. fonts.dir is a list of all the fonts in the directory, you will
have to overwrite the old one.

Maybe if you supply a little more info.

What JDBC driver are you using?
What is the URL string you are trying to use?
Are you trying to connect from a different host? The root account is
only good for localhost connections.
Can you connect with "mysql -u root -h hostname"?
Have you checked the mysql log to see what is happening?

JDK availablility for JDK1.3.1-RC1 on linux/arm

2002-03-12 Thread Jesse Sarnovsky

I saw a post back in June 2001 referring to a JDK release
not yet being available and saying it would take a couple weeks to run the
tests.  Has this become available yet?

We are porting a pretty large J2SE application to the StrongArm processor on an iPaq
3800 and have linux, x-windows, and the j2re1.3.1-RC1
working; however, we have a library that accesses our database that we use via
JNI and our database guy has asked me to find him the necessary lib’s and
headers which generally exist in the JDK.
I only see a full JDK for linux/i386, which I assume isn’t
compatible with arm.

We don’t mind it being somewhat unstable since
I’ve already managed to get Familiar 5.1 on the 3800 and for the most
part everything else running that we’ve wanted for a proof on concept by
end of week.

Forgive me if there’s already an answer out there that
I’m not seeing.

Thanks,

Jesse Sarnovsky

RE: [Java-Linux] will JRE1.3.1 fit in iPaq 3600?

2002-03-14 Thread Jesse Sarnovsky

I wave installed it on a 3800 with 64MB of ROM, but believe it or not,
it leaves plenty of room thanks to jffs2; however, I would recommend
installing it on a CF card. Try to leave as much room available for
other more vital support utilities.

Also make sure you install:

libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2 - The GNU stdc++ library

And of course if you want awt/x support, install base-x.

I noticed that it's pretty big(about 12MB), so do I have to install it

RE: [Java-Linux] will JRE1.3.1 fit in iPaq 3600?

2002-03-14 Thread Jesse Sarnovsky

Sorry about that, it's 32MB of RAM, 64MB of RAM... the last 96 hours
have been just one long day :)

You can successfully install it it along with the required libraries in
the 64MB; however, depending on your application requirements, you might
run out of space fast.

Take a look through the README carefully as it refers to what files can
optionally, and more importantly, safely be excluded to conserve space.

Depending on what sleeve(s) you own, you could have one or two PC Card
(PCMCIA) slots or the sleeve which includes a single CF slot. I would
recommend picking up the dual PC Card sleeve which comes with a CF->PC
convertor and would allow you to have a wireless LAN and a CF memory
card to be used simultaneously. I'll warn you, there are quite
expensive and you should expect to pay around $199US for one. Until
Familiar is able to support the SD slot which would make mine (and I'm
sure yours) a lot easier, you're going to be forced to use one of these
dual slot sleeves to storage and networking simultaneously.

I personally can't wait until they have the SD and Bluetooth support for
the 3800 working because then I won't need a sleeve and all and would be
much more "usable".

I now have three PocketPC's, about 10 CF cards, two 1GB IBM microdrives,
and countless wireless and wired pc cards from a number of manufacturers
to evaluate options for my company's application.

If you have any questions outside the realm of this mailing list, feel
free to send me an email personally and I'll be happy to help you. I've
lost many nights to this stuff and would like to save other people the
trouble.

RE: [Java-Linux] will JRE1.3.1 fit in iPaq 3600?

2002-03-15 Thread Jesse Sarnovsky

You can take advantage of any remaining free space in the ROM. I won't
go into detail on how to do this, but you should read up on CRAMFS.
CRAMFS provides a read-only file system that works great for taking
advantage of the remaining space of your flash ROM for storing binary
files. You won't be able to write to a cramfs partition, but if you're
using it for storing the j2re, you wouldn't want to anyway.

RE: weird xinerama problem

2002-03-16 Thread Jesse Sarnovsky

I don't believe the problem is related to java nor XFree86 for that
matter. I have seen this same problem on two Matrox G400 Dual Head PCI
cards that I have. The same problem occurs in Windows as well even with
their newest drivers.

When using the mirror mode which shows the same screen on both, there
are no problems, but as soon as you make them show two displays the
result is painfully slow. Try moving a Yahoo chat window onto the
second display or run something like winamp with a visual output plug
and you'll see it start to crawl.

It seems to me that any program that makes multiple bitblt's to the
display quickly will result in the same problem. Since theirs no easy
way for you to make multiple updates and "sync" then with the vertical
refresh (referred to as back buffering), you might be best to help java
cause one bigger "paint" instead of several little ones (which happens
when you try to do a scrolling list or updating several labels).

Option 1: Create two panels to contain your same information. Hide one
of the two panels. Then during your updates, make changes to the hidden
one, when you're dowe with a batch of them show the hidden one and hide
the other. During your next cycle work with the new hidden one. This
will allow the painting to occur for the larger single rectangle region
only once at a time.

Option 2: Depending on how fast you really need to refresh the data,
you may just benefit from tracking the data as much as you want, but you
use a separate thread to delay the output every XXX milliseconds. That
way you still track it, but you don't cause so much painting.

Subject: weird xinerama problem

Hello!

We made an Application that runs with sun j2sdk1.4.0 on Suse7.3.
The PCs have Matrox G400 Dual-Head-Cards.
Our Application mainly consists of several sub-Applications that are
lauchned in seperate Threads. Everything works normally. Moving the
Applications to the second screen and back is no Problem. One of the
Applications launches a JDialog that stays on screen to display some
changing Information. As soon this Dialog is moved to a Screen different
from the one the Application is running on the whole Application slows
down
(nearly freezing Screen refresh does take minutes). the java-Process is
consuming all cpu-time. When the dialog is moved back to the same screen
the
application is running on it takes 5-10 seconds and all returns to
normal.

Someone has an idea ?
I will try to make an easy Test-Programm at monday.
Could this problem be related to XFree86 (4.1.0) and not to Java?
Unfortunatly all Xinerama-PCs I have access to are identically
configured.

Thanks

Oktay

Re: HELP : Stable JVM for running JBoss on Redhat 7.2 (smp) ??

In my experience you should always be using "LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5"
with any of these JRE's and RH 7.2. (It was mentioned in the release
notes for RH 7.1)

I run Blackdown's and Sun's 1.3.1 on Debian & RH both single & dual cpu
& have never encountered any of the problems you seem to be having. Well
I used to get the odd crash & many defunct java processes, but they were
resolved after setting "LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5".

You are trying to use a 1.4 class (java.lang.CharSequence) with a 1.3
JRE.

Have a look at the API docs for more info:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/api/
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/docs/api/
