some tools in java....
Hi to all, First of all, I wanted to make an introduction a little bit. We are one of the programming firm here in the Philippines particularly in Davao City. We are making java programs for our clients, specially in smart cards.. now having used windows for a long time, we are used to so many things, especially in the use of the IDE. We are using VisualCafe and as a group we manage to share our projects through the team using VisualSourceSafe… Now my question.. as a java-linux group can I ask for a suggestions if how you guys manage to workaround in linux especially doing some java projects… 1.) what IDE are you guys using in deploying java? 2.) are there any alternative in using VisualSourceSafe? 3.) what are the database available compatible in linux? 4.) etc. etc…. RE: some tools in java....
Are they for free? - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, June 02, 2003 4:26 PM Subject: RE: some tools in java Hi Kent U can use the open source Java IDE called Eclipse, which comes along with different plugins called lomboz( J2EE). and as for the alternatives for VSS linux has a normal distribution of a program distributed called CVS which is a good tool. Apart from these above given tools there are some professional ones also available of which includes the Websphere studio by IBM and others but i might say i still preferred eclipse for my developement as i had the opportunity to plugin things i needed. And CVS is as good as VSS also eclipse has a direct connectivity for the CVS so u do as much as to connect to the CVS server and keep up ur source and version control. As for the databases compatible there are variety of them sybase 11.9.2 and oracle 8.0 are supported nicely but there might be some features that would be absent or u might face a bit of trouble handling them while install. Other wise u can surely go for the postgres or a commercial version of MySQL which is a good small to medium use DB. U can find the eclipse on www.eclipse.org and lomboz on www.objectlearn.com as they are opensource they can be freely downloaded and u can test them as per ur requirements. Since eclipse project is having a major backing of IBM hence the system is good. U can find either of the two versions a MOTIF based and another i guess if GTK based ( version 2.0 of gtk lib and above). Hope u might find this information satisfactory and as per ur needs. Thanks and regards Shishir
RE: some tools in java....
Are there any IDE with a built-in Version Control in it? Version control that can be configured in the IDE? = Kent E. -- this is a "corporate e-add" replying to [EMAIL PROTECTED] is different from replying to "Kent E. <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> thanks. = -Original Message- From: Dan Kegel [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, June 02, 2003 11:04 PM To: Kent E Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: some tools in java Kent E wrote: > 2.) are there any alternative in using VisualSourceSafe? Bitkeeper seems excellent, but I haven't used it myself much. http://www.bitkeeper.com The Linux Kernel guys use it heavily, and so do some large companies. It's something like $1000/seat. perforce isn't quite as fancy as Bitkeeper, but it works very, very well. http://www.perforce.com And I'm not saying that just because they sent me a t-shirt :-) I've used it in two jobs now, and it is far, far superior to Visual SourceSafe. It runs on all operating systems, it can be used via the commandline, via a gui, or via the web, it's fast, and it supports atomic changesets. It's something like $500/seat. Both are free for free software projects. - Dan -- Dan Kegel http://www.kegel.com http://counter.li.org/cgi-bin/runscript/display-person.cgi?user=78045 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". RE: some tools in java....
About this eclipse does this have a drop down list of methods just like what other ide have? Does this have a help? I'm still browsing thru their web page but still didn't have the answers found. Maybe you guyz can answer that. ===== Kent E. -- this is a "corporate e-add" replying to [EMAIL PROTECTED] is different from replying to "Kent E. <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> thanks. = -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, June 04, 2003 1:15 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: some tools in java > 1.) what IDE are you guys using in deploying java? Yes, you can use cvs. It's also open source and used tons of places. > 3.) what are the database available compatible in linux? Orcale will run on Linux, but it's expensive. MySQL works on Linux, but my favorite is PostgreSQL. It is far superior to MySQL. I use it on some production systems I run. http://www.postgresql.org. > 4.) etc. etc.. :-) You can also look at jboss and jonas if you want to do some J2EE development. They are open source as well.
