Kerry,
Did you try doing a detect and repair in Outlook?
Go to the help menu and then to detect and repair. You will need your
Office CD for this.

sendhi Daivd,

The troubel all began on Saturday or friday I think. I'm really getting
frustrated because yeterday, any email I entered on to read, jaws simplys
topped talking altogether.
I think it behaved better last night, but now I'm not sure what to expect.
FS told me to download the newest update completely and daw a repair. I
tried that and still nothing. This time, I got an error that set up could
not follow the command because something was missing.

Any suggestions (eventhrowing the laptop out the window) would be readily
accepted at this time!

 Hi Arianna,
You didn't say which version of Jaws,
 but try this:
Put your Jaws installation cd in for the version you
want to repair.
The setup program should start automatically, and inform
you that Jaws is
 already installed,
and then ask you what you want to do.
This is where you will get the repair option.
No, your mind didn't go blank, FS changed things a

[JAWS-Users] Re: new laptop with a few quirks

2007-05-08 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Siobhan,

Just some things I thought about reading your various messages to the list.

What kind of screen to you have on it?

Is it a TFT active matrix display, or an LCD?

The reason I ask is that some laptop screen produce static, and so when you
close the lid, it will occasionally interfere with the smooth running of the
touch pad.

The other thing I'm wondering is if you have a touch pad, or a track ball, or a
touch stick to control your mouse?

I find that a great number of my focus issues for Jaws on my laptops are due to
the mouse being too sensitive, and so, when I run my hand over it, it picks up
the heat of my fingers and voila, the window I was working with suddenly looses
focus and I have to alt+tab over to the window I was working with.

When I bought this new laptop, I thought it was so cool. It had a 15 inch wide
screen display, a full size keyboard, with out the number pad, which is the way
I wanted it, by the way, and hot buttons running up and down the sides of it
that would give me full control of any DVD's I played on this puppy.

Until I found out that the track point mouse, and touch pad, have a feature for
sighted people that would become the bane of my existence.

Basically, not only is it heat activated, the sides have scroll capabilities,
and touch capabilities, as well.

So, what does this mean to the average blind person?

Try typing with fat hands on the home row, and not touching the touch pad, or
any part of it.

I guarantee you, that on a laptop, it can't be done. Grin.

Anyway, it might be that your graphical user interfaces, like your mouse touch
pad and the like, are getting in the way of your access technology. The other
thing is that your laptop might have some perks designed for the sighted user
that may be running in the background. These can also get in the way of
certain focus issues.

You might want to get a copy of your laptop's user's manual, read it through
and see if there are things that are on by default, things that you may want to
disable so that it isn't taking focus away from the virtual viewer. Another
thing that I do, and this is because I've been around computers for a long
time, I go through the control panel and see what's in there, and look through
the items in there to see if there are some things that I don't recognize.
Just to give you a quick example, this new laptop has a feature called Virtual
sound, that comes on by default fresh out of the box. Essentially, what
happens is when ever some type of media file is played, whether video or sound,
the computers speakers suddenly double in size and you feel like you're in a
high definition stereo sound system and theatre.

Great if you're listening to music or movies all the time, but when the
slightest sound, like a window opening or an error sound comes on, suddenly
Jaws sounds like he's falling down a hole, or yelling from the other side of a
concert hall.

Suffice it to say, he sounds really stupid when ever this virtual sound feature
is active, so I have to disable it when I'm not listening to any music, movies
or what ever.

Like I said, it's the little things and perks for the sighted user that suppose
to impress them, but ends up getting in the way of the assistive technology
that bothers us.

Anyway, what ever the problem is, I hope you find it soon, and you can enjoy
that sweet laptop.

Victor

[JAWS-Users] Re: new laptop with a few quirks

2007-05-08 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Siobhan,

On David's site:

www.jaws-users.com

David has a program called Belarc Advisor.

This program, once installed, will give you everything you wanted to know about
your computer, laptop or desktop, and more you didn't want to know.

It's very easy to install, and once installed, it gives you all the
information, right down to the model number, and serial number, assuming you
have the original installation package that came with the machine.

In other words, no re-formats or anything like that.

Once you get the machine's model number, just zip off to the Dell website, and
download the manual.

My advice is to open the manual up in it's original form, which, if I know
Dell, is in PDF format, then convert the file into html.

This is best for long files of this type, as things may come up while you're
reading the manual, so you'll have to come back to it.

In that particular instance, you can just place a placemarker on the page, and

If you are running the most recent update to jaws 8 I can sort of see this
happening. The reason I say that is on my system the issue here is when I
 go
to reply to an email which you might guess happens around 50 times a day
 or
so every once in a while jaws takes maybe a half a minute to bring up my
edit field so I can write my message. This is boarder line irritating
because something is making it very sluggish. Now that's the only issue I
can point toward in this version of jaws at this time. So if your system
 is
at all like mine my guess is and I know this is less than an optimal idea
wait a minute and see if it comes up on it's own. I in having this problem
found out that it was just slow because once I tried to reply an email and
right then the phone rang or something so I got distracted long enough
 that
my message edit field popped up on it's own.

 Hi Arianna,
You didn't say which version of Jaws,
 but try this:
Put your Jaws installation cd in for the version you
want to repair.
The setup program should start automatically, and inform
you that Jaws is
 already installed,
and then ask you what you want to do.
This is where you will get the repair option.
No, your mind didn't go blank, FS changed things a
little. smile.

2007-05-08 Thread Mich
Hi all. I am using jaws 7.0 and Windows xp. I have been noticing some strange
things over the last few days with jaws. The first few have been happening for
quite a wile now and the last one just started happening a few days back. What
happens is some times when I am in OE and am arrowing down through the message
Jaws won't read the message. Then some times it will just stop entirely for no
reason. Be for this happens though I hear a ping sound. Another thing that
has been happening is that when I am going through in OE Jaws will say top of
window and bottom of window and not read the messages in-between I know when
it does this when i press enter on a message then deleat and then it will oapin
another message and it will say that that message is from the above person when
it wasn't and it is a new message all together. Then when I go to re start
jaws be for closing jaws there will be a short little gap when it is saying
between when it says un loading jaws in-between saying that there is a short
gap and then I say yes. After re loading jaws it will come back up but then
everything that I hit every key will make a pingging sound. I will then re
start the pc. Some time though after re starting the PC It will again exhibit
the above symptoms. It some times will happen 3 or 4 times with the top of
window and boddem of window stuff in OE and the pingging sounds. When it does
the Pingging sounds though all jaws will say is un red and some times it woant
even do that it will just make a pingging sound. Needless to say it has been
becoming quite annoying. Any Suggestions on what I might do about this? Other
then all this jaws is working quite fine. I have how ever been thinking of
doing a repair on jaws to see weather that fix's things. I look forward to your
feedback. from Mich Verrier from New Liskeard Ontario Canada.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Jaws and Skype.

2007-05-08 Thread Becky Buckner
Let's try it again. Here's a URL where you can get Skype scripts.
http://kirk.dlee.org:8080/skype/

Insert H will then give you the JAWS commands.

Does anyone know where I can obtain keyboard commands for Skype and Jaws? A
client of mine is trying to use Skype with Jaws and can't access the instant
message button without sighted assistance.
Thanks for any assistance you can give!
  Priscilla

[JAWS-Users] Re: getting sick of me yet?

2007-05-08 Thread Flor Lynch

Have you a hot key to bring up JAWS8? Remove the JAWS7.1 installer, but
think for yourself! grin
If JAWS8 is unloaded, and doesn't start automatically, you can bring it up
with your JAWS8 hot key.

[JAWS-Users] Re: getting sick of me yet?

2007-05-08 Thread JOHN O CARVALHO

You can use a hot key for both at the same time.
This is what I did with mine,for jaws 7 I used control,alt,7 .
Then for 8 version I used control,alt 8.
This way if I happen to need one or the other just have to unload one
bring up the other.

PEACE
