[JAWS-Users] Re: Jaws equivalent for MAC

2007-04-13 Thread Chanting Monks

Thanks, Chris. I just finally found (after lots of searching) info on
VoiceOver. (And you addressed my No. 1 fear--that it's MAC's Narrator.)

I will contact you off list if it appears I will be using this for possible
work. I've gotten so familiar with using JAWS, it was my hope there was
something FS had for MAC, but if not, oh well, onward and upward. Thanks
much.

Best,
Joe Monks

Joe, we do not need additional screen readers as Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger)
and above include one right out of the box: VoiceOver. It is as good as
JAWS is for Windows, unlike Narrator, which is limited in functionality.
Hope that helps. P.S. If you want to join any of the mac lists, please
let me know, preferably off list, as we're getting off topic. Thanks.

Ben,

I won't address everything (though I wish I'd had this post three hours

Something good to know.

I'm a web developer with an interest in screen reader issues who uses
Mac OS X, Windows XP, and Ubuntu Linux, just so you know where I'm
 coming from.

There is no JAWS for the Mac.

For Mac OS 9, there was a screen reader called outSPOKEN sold by Alva,
who have now gone out of business, though you may be able to find a
 second-hand copy.

That's the bad news. The good news is Apple built a screen reader called
VoiceOver into their new operating system, Mac OS X.

For an introduction to VoiceOver see:

 http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/voiceover/

 For more details see:

 http://www.apple.com/accessibility/voiceover/

Key software usable with VoiceOver includes the bundled Apple Mail
program, the bundled Safari web browser, Adobe Reader, and (just
recently added) ITunes. Microsoft Office for the Mac has not yet been
made accessible with VoiceOver, but you can use other software capable
of basic editing of Office files. Your message doesn't say what you need
to use a Mac for so I'm not sure what software you'd need. Firefox is
not yet accessible with VoiceOver, partly because the developer working
on this found another job. However, it can be used as a talking browser
on the Mac with the excellent Fire Vox extension:

 http://www.firevox.clcworld.net/

A future version of the free Opera browser will apparently also be
 usable with VoiceOver:

 http://my.opera.com/chaals/blog/speaking-out?cid=2506923

Questions about VoiceOver are best addressed to the discussion list for
 http://macvisionaries.com/:

 http://macvisionaries.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss_macvisionaries.com

Darcy Burnard and Holly Anderson record a podcast for VoiceOver users:

 http://www.screenlessswitchers.com/

The BBC maintains a collection of Mac accessibility hints:

 http://www.bbc.co.uk/accessibility/mac/sub_root.shtml

PS Just so you know, Mac is written with the M in uppercase and the a
and c in lowercase, not MAC all in capitals. When all in capitals, MAC
typically refers to a unique identifier for a networking card:

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAC_address

 Hope that helps.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Question about compacting messages in OE

2007-04-12 Thread Chanting Monks
Ugh, this is a considerable problem then. It's happening far more frequently
than every hundredth time. Thanks for the info. Do you know if this is the
case in every version of OE? I'm running (I believe, since I can't cut and
paste) 6.00.29 (and then some other digits I am not sure belong to the same
line).

[JAWS-Users] Trouble w/JAWS reading clickable links, but links not clickable

2007-03-20 Thread Chanting Monks

Hi folks,

I've run into a problem and maybe one of you can help. I hit a site where
JAWS reads:

Clickable, On Mouse Over

Now, ordinarily, that makes the text said mouse is over clickable. But on
this site in particular, it isn't. The text appears, alerts me I should be
able to click, but apparently this is JAVA script that is poorly done (or so
a friend has suggested). Does anybody know if there is some sort of
keystroke command that will enable clicking, or some other way to navigate
these would-be links? Any help is much appreciated.

Joe Monks

2007-03-20 Thread Chanting Monks

Thanks for the tip. Still not working. I am beginning to think that perhaps
it is poor coding. The rest of the standard links work fine, but these
apparently won't work no matter the keystrokes attempted. Grumble...

Try ctrl+insert+enter. This is [now] the designated OnMouseOver click
keystroke. (In the past, some of these type of links wouldn't have been
 seen by JAWS.)

[JAWS-Users] Anybody using JAWS w/an AMD chipset?

2007-03-15 Thread Chanting Monks
Hi folks,

Thinking about upgrading my laptop. Is anybody running any of the DELL Inspiron
laptops, or using the AMD TurionTM 64 chipset? I have a lower end DELL laptop
from about 5 years ago that runs JAWS great and handles all my other programs,
but I am going to upgrade sometime soon anyway, and since the latest DELL deal
seems pretty reasonable, I wanted input on how well JAWS runs with this set up.
My previous computers, both laptop and desktop, have all run Intel Pentium
chips, so I have no experience with the AMD. Any input would be greatly
appreciated. Also, if anybody is running VISTA on this set up and has any ideas
about that, great. I'm very comfortable with XP and don't particularly see the
need for Vista, but if there's any advantage to taking the preloaded instead of
having them configure for XP, better I go in knowing that now. Thanks.

Joe Monks
