I wish it was that interesting.
I work for a business development firm as a sales team
leader and I am required to generate a monthly performance
report.
Frankly I liked it a lot better when there were more sales
and fewer reports.
I can give you more details off list if you are interested.
Trust me the management side of this job is about as much
fun as watching paint dry, however the money is incredible.

I frequently have problems with JAWS not speaking portions
of a word or line, entire lines, and multiple lines. I think
it is a video conflict with JAWS and the computer. Here is
what I do when I encounter these problems. I start with the
first item on the below list, and if that does not fix the
problem I move on down the list.

Repeatedly move the mouse in a upward or downward direction
to move it off of the area where I am trying to work. Of
course I haven't an idea where the mouse is moving to, but
my goal is to move it to the top or bottom of the screen. My
thought is that there is less chance that it will interfere
with what I am doing.

Use Insert+ESC to refresh the screen.

Select the word, phrase, line, paragraph that you are having
trouble reading Then use Insert+ESC to try refreshing the
screen.

Use Alt+Tab to move away from the program and then move back
to the program.

Insert+F4 to unload JAWS, and then Control+Alt+J to reload
it. Before
doing this, make sure the version of JAWS that you are using
has the
Control+Alt+J short cut set up.

Close the document that you are working on and then re-open
it.

Exit out of the program and then reload it.

If all of these tricks fail, give up on it for now and come
back later, after a system reboot.

Font size can also effect how JAWS reads. I find that Arial
12 works well with JAWS.

Also check your view. I prefer to use Print Layout in
MS-Word in either Full-page or Page width view. This is not
the recommended view from FS. I do this because at work we
deal with a lot of text formatting and my co-workers find
Normal layout to be a problem.

Hi folks,

Recently Jaws has simply stopped speaking while creating a
document in MS-word XP. It will remain silent for a couple
of paragraphs and then rezume speech.

I am using Jaws 8.current, MS-office XP pro and Windows XP

I have tried running a repair on office and reinstalling
Jaws with no success.

Any ideas?

The answer is yes.
At work, my Num Lock is on 98% of the time. I am much more efficient
at entering numerical data using the Num Pad than the top row of
numbers.
In fact, I found it quite annoying when JAWS began turning the Num lock
off. I recommended to FS that this should having JAWS turn off the num
lock should be a user configurable setting. I am hoping they take it
into consideration in the next version of JAWS.

On the rare occasion I use a calculator, I use the num pad rather than the
top row of numbers because I can enter the numbers more quickly using it.
The only talking calculator I ever owned had the same key configuration as

I still prefer using my noggin, but every now and then I get a case of the
galloping lazies and break down and use the calculator.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using numberpad for number input

2007-06-27 Thread Eric Damery
Hello to the List,

I am Eric Damery, the Product Manager for JAWS and have been reading
some of the posts recently. While I don't have the time to answer or
comment on everything, I will try to on some of these topics such as
this NumPad subject.

The ability to toggle numlock on and off letting you use the Number Pad
as both a Number pad and Screen Reading Keys has always been a plus in
JAWS I think. As many of you mentioned, inputting numbers from the
NumPad is much easier for many than the number row, yours truly
included.

I especially appreciate the message that requested an option in JAWS to
stop turning it off by default every time you launch the computer. While
this is not in the UI of JAWS today, there is a setting in the
default.jcf file under options called Initial NumLock State which
could be changed (set it to number 2) which will tell JAWS to stop
changing it at start up. If you are interested in getting that set up
now, let us know and I will right down some steps that will help you get
this into your user folder correctly.

We are still working on the Start Up Wizard feature being expanded in
JAWS 9. I will talk with some others here and see about adding this
adjustment to the UI in that wizard. I think this will make it fairly
easy for anyone to change in the future when they decide on laptop
versus desktop and so on. Hope this is helpful.

Regards,
Eric

Many thanks for this! nope - no survey ...doing some work with young
kids (pre-screen reader age) who need to input numbers - the program has
its own audio speech so no need for screen readers yet - but the
question was because some are of the opinion that you should not teach
kids to use the numberpad for number input because it will confuse them
when they start using JAWS ...?
On your second point about the Numlock default being off, a colleague
used just this argument about not using the Numpad for numbers...
Any other thoughts ?
Many thanks again

[JAWS-Users] Need some reassurance, I think

2007-06-27 Thread Christopher Hallsworth
Hi all,
If ever I discover anything that I think is useful, then I will post it
to the lists, and never beforehand. I appreciate that some of these
tips may be confusing for novices, and I will explain these technical
terms in the future, but let me reassure you that I will only post
anything that I think is not only useful to me, but also to the others.
For example, before I posted about manually starting JAWS as a service,
I tried it on my own computer before deciding to post it, and it worked,
so I can guarantee that it will work on at least most systems. Thanks

Hi

Yes I use it quite a bit, an example is when I have to enter all my bankk
details to go on line etc. I find it easier than feeling around the number
row. The only problem being that you must remember that the num lock is
switched on or you run into problems when ou wish to use the mumpad for
other jaws commands, numbers go in where they should not.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Registry Mechanic

2007-06-27 Thread Lennie Rinaldi
Hello Lisa,

Registry Mechanic is not free. It costs $29.95 for a single computer.

I have no idea how it works with Jaws 6, but I would think it would
not be any different with your version and Jaws 8. You will have to
use the Jaws cursor.

You are right. You should not go into your window registry unless you
are properly trained to do so. One wrong mistake and you may not be
able to reboot your computer. I guess that is why we depend on a
software to do the job for us. But according to Lenny McHugh's post
on this subject, a few days ago, not all registry cleaners are alike
and some may even mess up your registry.

That is why I have not yet purchased any registry cleaners. I did run
CCleaner to remove some entries in my registry. You can download
CCleaner at David's web site under programs.

If I can be of any further assistance, let me know. Hope this helps,

Lennie

Hi Kurt,

If you go into the Start Menu, Programs, JAWS 8, Explore JAWS, Explore
My Settings you will probably find that you have a file here called
Default.jcf.
If so, move to the file and press the Application Key to get a context
menu.
Now, choose Open with submenu and open it with Notepad.
Now, look for the [Options] section in the file.
If you find it, move under that line, insert a blank line and paste in
the following line:
numlock=2|Num lock
Then, save the file and close it. From then on, when you boot up the num
lock will remain how it was when you shut down.
If you did not find [Options] in the file, you can move to the bottom of
the file and add the following to lines:

[Options]
numlock=2|Num lock

Hope you understand. If not, just wait till the 9.0 release and let me
see what we can do to get this as an option in the UI for you.
Regards,
Eric

Eric,

It is great to know that you are spending a little time monitoring this
very useful list.

When I first switched from JAWS 6.x to 8.0 the num lock being toggled
off was very annoying to me. Although I have gotten use to it, I would
be interested in knowing how to change this setting so I can control the
num lock.

I did make the suggestion to JAWS technical support to make this a user
control option when trying to figure out what was going on with my num
lock. The representative couldn't understand why a blind person would
want to use the num pad for anything other than JAWS navigation.

I hope that the num pad on / off option does make it into a future
version of the JAWS UI. I for one like having control of my settings.
Of course then when I screw something up, I have no one to blame but
myself.

Thanks,
Kurt

Regards,
Eric

 Lennie

[JAWS-Users] jaws losing voice

2007-06-27 Thread Lenny McHugh
Hi All,
I finally have a good lead on the problem of jaws losing voice. The problem
very randomly occurs where jaws volume drops to about 1 or 2 per cent is very
tinny and is only out of one speaker.
I had suspected spyware interfering but now have a totally different thought.
After talking to a friend who owns a computer repair shop, I now believe that
is a hardware problem.
The next time it happens he wants me to lightly tap the sound card. In the mean
time I think I will activate the on board sound card and dedicate it to jaws.
It may also be a mother board problem but the sound card is suspected.
The reason spyware was perceived to be the culprit was that after running
spybot and the like the problem would go away.
This intermittent problem has been driving me crazy for a few months, and for
me it is a very short trip.

I know that this subject is getting old, but forgive me, David. I
need to put my two cents in.

Like Russ, I too was an accountant before going into computer
programming. I used to use a calculator and my fingers would fly over
the number pad. What I am trying to say is that it makes perfect
sense to use the NumPad keys for entering numbers in Excel or any
other applications.

The top row was, I think, designed for typewriters which most
standard keyboards today are. I, in my old days I used to use a
keypunch machine to punch 80 cards for my programs and the layout was
similar to today's standard keyboards. (Good grief! I am giving out
my age smile!)

The IBM DOS screen reader had its own keypad for commands and you did
not have to worry about whether NumLock was on or off.

Sorry David to get off topics, but I thought that everyone should
know how important the NumPad keys are for entering numbers and Jaws
commands.

I wish there was a way for Jaws to automatically tell me whether
NumLock is off or on without hitting the NumLock key each time when I
go to use it.

Thanks for letting me put in my two cents!

I use the numeric keypad frequently to key longer strings of numbers
such as telephone numbers, SS numbers, or credit card numbers. I have to
tell you that I was an accountant for about 30 years so I am very used
to the numeric keypad layout.

Take care,
Russ

Re: [JAWS-Users] *****SPAM***** Re: MS-Excel documents looking like crap.

2007-06-27 Thread Annette Carr
JAWS does now have a way of getting a list of all of the cells that fall
along a page break. I used it once, but it was a bit time consuming, so I
reverted back to sighted help. Maybe if I had to do this more often, I
would develop a system of using this and become much faster at it.

It's been a long time since I've done this, but I seem to remember you have
to make sure the grid lines are turned on in the format menus. Also you have
to do a page setup to aline the length of the spreadsheet to fit the page.
It was a trickey process for me at the time and I am not sure if Jaws has
perfected this in later versions for this program. I had a spreadsheet to
come out in a small area on the page. My son had to do a print preview and
zoom it on the monitor to see exactly what was showing on the screen for
print out..

I stopped doing it myself..

 Hi Folks,

I am crafting a business plan and much of the financial
analysis information needs to be placed in to an Excel
 format.
Jaws works wonderfully filling out the various cells
however, when I print it out much of the data is hidden,
columns don't line up, text is so small as to make it
virtually impossible to read and the text that is visible
doesn't conform with my font and color settings.

I have read through the Jaws help, John Wilson's Excel
tutorial and one from Cathy Ann Mertha of Access
Technology Institute and I still can't seem to make the damn
 thing work.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

 Regards

 Larry Stansifer

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using numberpad for number input

2007-06-27 Thread Annette Carr
Most laptops have an embedded number pad in the QWERTY keyboard. On my
previous laptop, a Toshiba, and on my current laptop, a Dell, I just have to
toggle the numlock and tap the keyboard function key twice and I can enter
numbers from the right hand side of my QWERTY keyboard.

HTH,
Annette

I prefer the num pad for many, many reasons over the top row. Much quicker
than the top row of keys for me personally.
When using my laptop I get very frustrated having to use the top row for
numbers.
Have been using JAWS for about 10 years.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] I did it

I was having trouble with my video intercept which was saying video
intercept dcme. I had a friend check to see if all my hardware was in right
and when he said he had put my video card in it had popped halfway out.
The computer was getting hot and was dirty inside. I then installed jaws 8
by myself and it corrected the problem. I would like to thank this list
for giving me the courage to do this on my own.
