[JAWS-Users] Jaws cursor
Hello, I know this may sound stupid but I realize that I don't really know how to work with the jaws cursor efficiently. I know how to switch back and forth and how to move the jaws cursor to and from the pc cursor. I know that Jaws-key+r does somehow switch the area in which the Jaws cursor is able to move. But actually I don't quite realize the differences betwenn the areas. Any hints are greatly apreciated since I need to navigate a program that is not accessible by using the pc cursor allone. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws cursor
Hi Jeronimo; Your question is not a stupid question. There is only 1 stupid question, that is the 1 that is not asked! If there is 1 person with a question about something in particular, there are probably hundreds of others wanting to know the same thing! Below is an article that explains the functions of all 4 cursors. About JAWS Cursors Navigating through Windows with JAWS is accomplished with cursors. These cursors determine the focus of JAWS speech and are often directly linked with Windows cursors. The PC Cursor - Follows Keystrokes This cursor is linked to the keyboard functions of Windows and applications. This is the cursor that is used when typing information, moving through options in dialog boxes, and selecting options or icons. As you type information, the PC Cursor follows along with each key you press. If you are making a selection in a menu or dialog box, the PC Cursor highlights the currently selected object. The PC Cursor is activated by default when JAWS starts. If you are using a different cursor, pressing NUM PAD PLUS returns you to the PC Cursor. The JAWS Cursor - Follows Mouse Pointer The JAWS Cursor is linked to mouse pointer functions in Windows and other applications. It is used to read information the PC Cursor cannot read, such as toolbar information. The mouse follows along with the JAWS Cursor when it is moved, and you therefore have access to information in an application window that is beyond the scope of the PC Cursor. To activate the JAWS Cursor, press NUM PAD MINUS. The Virtual PC Cursor - HTML Environment The virtual PC Cursor mimics the functions of the PC Cursor, but is activated by default when entering an HTML document. The virtual PC Cursor speaks the number of frames in a document, and the number of links in the frame. You can switch between frames, and JAWS reads graphics labeled by alt tags in the HTML code. Invisible Cursor The JAWS cursor is basically the mouse cursor that is visible on screen. The invisible cursor can be moved around just like the JAWS cursor to view information. It works like the mouse cursor but can not be seen on screen or effect objects. Therefore you can not use the NumPad / (left mouse click) or NumPad * (right mouse click) on an object. It is useful to read information without disturbing the mouse cursor. It is also useful to determine colors or whatever might change when the mouse is over an object. It will not cause ToolTips to pop up. Hope this has helped. Take care. Jeronimo, Once the JAWS cursor is on, simply arrow around the screen with your arrow keys. This is very helpful especially when installing programs with different installation screens. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws cursor
The JAWS cursor moves around the mouse pointer. You said that you already know that the NumPad - (minus) key puts you in JAWS cursor mode Insert + NumPad - (minus) moves the JAWS cursor to the PC cursor where the focus is currently placed, and NumPad + (plus) will return you to the normal PC cursor mode. Yes, the Insert + R keystroke sets the JAWS cursor restriction. In JAWS 10 these options are; Application (default), real, current, focus, frame, and unrestricted. These restrictions will not let the mouse leave the specified container, normally staying within the application's window. This prevents hearing unrelated information, like Desktop Icons, from being spoken while poking around. Unrestricted mode lets you move the mouse anywhere on the screen. There are many ways to move the mouse around at this point and have JAWS announce what is underneath. The PageUp key will move to the top of the window, the PageDown key to the bottom of the window, the Home key will move to the left side of the window, and the End key will move to the far right side of the window or container. You can simply use the arrow keys. Pressing Control with either the Left or Right Arrow keys will move to the next item in the container, such as the next piece of text or graphic. There are other combinations, such as holding down the Alt key while using the Arrow keys that moves the mouse in different increments. Someone else might want to specify further. I don't really use these keys. Typically, you will want to click on an item with the NumPad / (divide) key or right click using the NumPad * (multiply) key on the object under the mouse cursor. Another useful key is Alt + Delete, which announces cursor information. It will say the cursor mode which is active, the absolute X, Y position in pixels, the current restriction if not using the PC cursor, and many times the percentage of the way down in a scrolling window. The percentage is handy in browser windows as well. The best way to understand the PC cursor mode is to play around and explore. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws 11 and windows seven
JAWS 11 does not work well for me either! I am using Windows Live Mail on Windows 7. To read and compose mail, I switch from JAWS 11 to JAWS 10. JAWS 10 has a few quirks with Windows Live Mail, but is useable. Freedom Scientific promised me about a month ago that a new update of JAWS 11 should fix all of these issues. I have not seen any updates yet. If this sounds too frustrating for you, you might want to consider using Thunderbird. Users have developed scripts to make it accessible. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws with Microsoft excel 2007
Hello Ming, The only way I have found to have the entire column or entire row read in Excel 2007 is to list the data and then use a SayAll command on the list. It doesn't seem very efficient but it will work. You list cells in the column by using JAWS key with shift+c. You list the row entries by using shift+JAWS key+R. Use JAWS key with down arrow when the list is in focus. Unfortunately, the row or column coordinates are read for each entry during the SayAll. The column reading command is CTRL+JAWS key+up arrow. However, it only reads the portion of the column that is on the screen and visible at the time. It appears that the JAWS scripts are written so that only the part of the column showing is read with the column reading command. I don't think there is a command for reading the entire row except for listing all the items in cells of a row using the shift+JAWS key+R. If you select a column using CTRL+spacebar or a row using shift+spacebar and then try using the SayAll command, JAWS will tell you there are too many cells in the range and only the first and last will be read. JAWS will read the first one and tell you the last cell in the column or row that is selected. I found no difference when I used different views in Excel. It appears that the only way you can have the entire row or column read when data extends into cells beyond the visible portion of the screen is to list them and then use a SayAll command. Take care.
