Latest OpenBook 8 works ok on Windows 7 64-bit.
I have not tried all options in OpenBook, but scanning and reading works
great.
Braille also works fine with the latest version of OpenBook 8 on Win 7.

You'll need the OpenBook install CD from September 2009 to use it
successfully with Win 7 64-bit.
I tried an older version but then I could not use Braille etc.

I can see only OpenBook 8 being listed on their downloads area. OpenBook
9 therefore isn't out just yet, but yes, that is the next major version

 Hello all,

I know this might be a little off topic but I need your help. The

still is currently loaded on it, and I can't remember the name but I
know it's a 32 bit. All I'm purchasing is the PC, no screen, and no
speakers so another words the tower part that stores all of the
information. I'll paste the name of the new computer at the end of
 this message.

I need to know if this new computer will have enough memory for Jaws
version 11, Kurzweil 1000 version 11, MS word 2003, all of my
microsoft word documents (I have about 40 of them maybe more, my
talking checkbook program, PC suite latest version, internet explorer
8, outlook express version 6.00, 250 folders in outlook express
because when I get e-mail from people I save it in the person's
folder, talking CD\DVD creator program, about 28 folders on my C
drive. In my music folder I have four folders. Mark Chesnutt's folder
currently has 18 CDS' in it and soon I will be adding his Outlaw CD
(which was released June 22 for those of you that are interested in
purchasing it). Then I have a misolaneous folder with about three CDS'
in it, a George Jones folder which has two CDS' and another folder if
I remember it's George Strait and it has a couple CDS' in it.

So another words I don't want to have to keep having to buy a new
computer every 8 years when I add music, more MS word documents,
kurzweil 1000 documentation, e-mail folders, or my third concert and
more concerts after that in my concerts folder.

Now here is the information about the computer. Thank you very much in

 Hi listers,

Is there anyway to have access to facebook with usability at the same
 time?
When I use facebook with internet explorer 8 and with JAWS 10, my netbook
freezes to the point that I need to restart my computer. However I notice
that using firefox makes it a little faster and I seldom encounter the
freezing of my machine. But I still have some problems such as the
 difficulty
with writing in edit fields to write a comment or set a status because
 more
often than not, the edit box takes too long to appear or does not appear
 at
all. I have been using the mobile site to communicate with my friends and
AIM 7.2 to use the chat, but I just wonder if there is any add on that I
 can
incorporate with IE or firefox to make my facebooking more enjoyable in
 their main site itself.
 Thanks in advance

As for your statement about netbook hard drives, most netbooks still come

Hi Steve,

While the specs are nice, although those specs are the bare minimum in my
opinion, the fact is, if you're going to run Jaws 11 on a computer running
Windows 7 64 bit edition, there is absolutely no point in using that
computer unless it's got at least 4 gigs of RAM, otherwise the thing will
be

slower than molasses.

If she wanted a slow computer, she might as well keep the one she has and
save her money.

A second point I would make is that a 320 gig hard drive will become
obsolete in less than three months, if they aren't already, so why pay all
that money for something that will be obsolete in less than three months.

The minimum one can get just in a laptop alone is 500 gigs, unless one is
getting a net book, in which case, the biggest I've seen is a 250 hard
drive, and these are solid state drives, so, again, why would she pay 250
dollars for a computer that only has 2 gigs of RAM and a 320 gig drive, it
wouldn't make sense.

Heck, if I'm not mistaken, with all the features of Windows 7, the darn OS
will fill that 320 gigger in a matter of days. Smile.

In any case, at the very least, if she isn't planning on upgrading in the
near future, then I would definitely say that using a computer with those

Re: [JAWS-Users] Computer advice.

2010-06-27 Thread Steve
You could transfer all your programs and such with a program like PcMover.
The problem comes in as far as the operating system. This is for technical
as well as operational and security reasons.

From a technical standpoint, you'd need to make sure that the hardware on
the new machine would work with your old operating system. Also, you'd have
to get a machine without an operating system which usually means building
your own or having somebody build it to your specifications. That's doable,
but these days, you can buy a system for less money than you can build it.

From an operational and security standpoint, you now have XP Home. XP
support is going away, the support will end in 2014. This means after 2014,
you will no longer be getting any updates for security holes and threats.
Additionally, XP is inherently more security flawed than Windows 7.

The drawback to updating for you might be financial. For Win 7, you'll
really need Jaws 11. For Vista, Jaws 8 is the earliest version I think,
although Jaws 9 is better in my opinion. And, since most commercial vendors
are peddling the 64-bit editions of Vista and Win 7, this means you'll need
at least Jaws 10 since that is the first version that supported a 64-bit
edition. Because Jaws and really any screen-reader, buries itself so deeply
in the operating system, earlier versions won't work on 64-bit operating
systems, even though other run-of-the-mill 32-bit programs will work.

Instead of purchasing more memory for $100.00. Would it be worth it just

IE8 etc etc and they all ran fine with jaws running, and that was an AMD,
i prefer intel personally. Also, please remember that we don't all have
the money to shop for the latest and greatest, some users have said that
she should get a really really high spec PC. its like when i'm advising
and passing pc's on to the elderly. they just want something that just,
well, works! not something that they can run the latest 3D games on, or
the latest netbook with solid state storage, bluetooth and wireless. to
them, the word bluetooth probably means talking about teath, literally.
But that's besides the point. I'm not trying to say that jenny doesn't
know what she's talking about, and i stand corrected if i have got any
part of this email wrong in advance, i'm mearly saying that if she wants
something basic, then advise her on that basis, and if people want to shop
at superstores where things are a little expensive, there is nothing or
very little one can do about that. I hate PC world, but many of the
people i work with have shopped there, shoot me, my job is mearly to get
them up and running. steve, i've just read your last. I agree with you,
i provide technical support all the time as well as custom PC building,
i'm from the days when we'd have dos on an old BBC computer, and if
someone can get buy with what ever is good for them, so be it. Just my 2
cents or penny's worth depending on where you are.

Best wishes to you all,

I mean, have you actually physically tried it, or are you going on the

The fact is, I've used computers running Windows 7 and Jaws 11 with only
2 gigs of RAM, please believe me, unless I was only running those two
pieces of software, those being the OS and the screen reader, everything
would indeed be fine, but load any other piece of software in addition to
that, and things would start to lag dramatically.

As for the solid state drives being on 160, you're nuts.

One can get a netbook with a 10 inch screen, and a 250 gig solid state

I've seen it, and had a chance to play with it at the store where I saw

Re: [JAWS-Users] Renaming Main Folder

2010-06-27 Thread Brian Lee
Hello Graham,

You can rename the name of the folder that shows at the top of the start
menu and in a few other places by changing the registered owner's name in
the registry. However, although you change the folder name you will have to
take additional steps to actually change the name of the c:\users\store
folder. If you don't mind working in the registry then the following steps
should help you in renaming the folder for the user in the start menu. I
suggest that you first export your current registry settings and note where
they are saved before changing things in the registry. Without knowing your
level of experience working with computers, I need to mention that you
should be cautious when working in the Windows registry. You won't get a
chance to save or cancel when you finish changing things and results can
certainly be troublesome if you inadvertently change things you don't mean
to change. The export choice is in the file menu of the registry. In the
export dialog box be sure that after naming the registry backup file that
you use tab key to a group of radio buttons that determine if the entire
registry or just a current branch is to be exported. You should use the
all choice if changes will be in more than one branch of the registry.
Also tab in that dialog box and be sure you note the location for the saved
exported file.

With that out-of-the way here is how you can make your changes:

1. Press Windows key with R to bring up the run dialog box.

2. Type in regedit (without the quotes) and press enter key. This will
open the registry editor.

3. In the registry you will be presented with a tree view/list view
structure. You can use tab key and shift+tab between the tree and list
views. You can open levels in the tree view by using a right arrow key and
close levels by using a left arrow key. If focus is in the tree view then
you want to start at the top of the tree structure. JAWS should tell you as
you use tab and shift+tab if you are in the list or tree view. When focus
is in the tree view use the home key to move to the top of it. If JAWS says
computer closed then use right arrow to open that level.

4. When focus is on my computer and the level is open then using down
arrow key moves you from hive to hive in the registry. Use down arrow key
to the HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE entry and use right arrow to open another level.

5. Press S until you get to the software choice and press right arrow
key.

6. Press the letter M until you get to the Microsoft choice and use
right arrow key.

7. Press the letter W until you get to the Windows NT choice and use
right arrow to open another level.

8. Use down arrow to the current version entry.

9. Use tab key into the list view.

10.Press the letter R until you get to the registered organization
choice.

11.If you want to change the registered organization then press enter key on
that choice. In the resulting dialog box the focus should be in an edit box
with the current name in it. You can use the end key to move to the end of
the current organization name and use backspace until the string of text is
gone. Type in the name for the organization, tab to the OK button and press
enter key.

12.Use down arrow key to the registered owner choice. If it is not the
next entry then continue using down arrow key or pressing the letter R
until you find the choice for the registered owner.

13.Press enter key to be taken where the value of the current owner is shown
in the edit box. Use end key and then backspace to remove the current
string of text and type in the owner name you want used. Tab to the OK
button and press enter key.

14. Use a shift+tab keystroke to move back to the tree view.

15.With the 64-bit version of Windows you also want to make the changes for
the registered organization and registered owner in another registry key.
Use tab key to move to the top of the tree view and make sure that
computer is open.

16.Use down arrow to the HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE entry and use right arrow
key to open another level. Press S until you find the software choice and
use right arrow key to open it. Press the letter W until you find an
entry for WOW6432Node. And then press right arrow key to open another
level. Press M until you find the Microsoft choice and then right arrow
key to open another level. Press W until you find the Windows NT choice
and use right arrow key to open another level. Press C until you get to
the current version choice.

17.Use tab key to move into the list of items.

18.Press the letter R and if you have entries for registered
organization and/or registered owner change them in the same way as you
did previously.

19.There might be one other area to change in the registry. Press shift+tab
to move to the tree view and then home key to move to the top of it.

20.Use down arrow key until you find the HKEY_Current_User hive and then use

You could transfer all your programs and such with a program like PcMover.
The problem comes in as far as the operating system. This is for
technical as well as operational and security reasons.

From a technical standpoint, you'd need to make sure that the hardware on
the new machine would work with your old operating system. Also, you'd
have to get a machine without an operating system which usually means
building your own or having somebody build it to your specifications.
That's doable, but these days, you can buy a system for less money than
you can build it.

From an operational and security standpoint, you now have XP Home. XP
support is going away, the support will end in 2014. This means after
2014, you will no longer be getting any updates for security holes and
threats. Additionally, XP is inherently more security flawed than Windows
7.

The drawback to updating for you might be financial. For Win 7, you'll
really need Jaws 11. For Vista, Jaws 8 is the earliest version I think,
although Jaws 9 is better in my opinion. And, since most commercial
vendors are peddling the 64-bit editions of Vista and Win 7, this means
you'll need at least Jaws 10 since that is the first version that
supported a 64-bit edition. Because Jaws and really any screen-reader,
buries itself so deeply in the operating system, earlier versions won't
work on 64-bit operating systems, even though other run-of-the-mill 32-bit
programs will work.

Hi Steve,

While the specs are nice, although those specs are the bare minimum in
my
opinion, the fact is, if you're going to run Jaws 11 on a computer
running

Windows 7 64 bit edition, there is absolutely no point in using that
computer unless it's got at least 4 gigs of RAM, otherwise the thing
will be

slower than molasses.

If she wanted a slow computer, she might as well keep the one she has
and

save her money.

A second point I would make is that a 320 gig hard drive will become
obsolete in less than three months, if they aren't already, so why pay
all
that money for something that will be obsolete in less than three
months.

The minimum one can get just in a laptop alone is 500 gigs, unless one
is

getting a net book, in which case, the biggest I've seen is a 250 hard
drive, and these are solid state drives, so, again, why would she pay
250
dollars for a computer that only has 2 gigs of RAM and a 320 gig drive,
it

wouldn't make sense.

Heck, if I'm not mistaken, with all the features of Windows 7, the darn
OS

will fill that 320 gigger in a matter of days. Smile.

In any case, at the very least, if she isn't planning on upgrading in
the
near future, then I would definitely say that using a computer with
those
specs and running Jaws 11 64 bit edition would just make using the
computer

way too tedious.

Most likely, certainly the monitor.

Go to your manufacturer's website for the printer and camera and look under
support for Windows 7 drivers. Depending on your printer's age, it may or
may not have one.

Unless your printer is esoteric, assuming it is an inkjet, you could buy a
new one for $50, which isn't any more than a cartridge refill.
