Alt control J used to be the hot keys for Jaws and it disappeared. When I
went to redo it, and I hadn't done hot keys on this new computer, they were
just transferred for me from the XP computer, I discovered that I couldn't.
I could do alt J. But not three keys. When I wrote the alt, I saw a plus
sign appear in the edit box. When I tried to add control, it all
disappeared. So I started again. I wrote the alt, the plus appeared, and I
wrote the J, and apparently, that was acceptable. Then I could tab to OK.

Hi,

Jaws wasn't responding to certain commands so I wanted to turn it off and
then start it again. This usually solves the problem. I turned it off. But
when I wanted to restart it, the hot keys didn't work. I have a win7
computer with the latest version of Jaws 13. I also have a very enlarged
Magic 11. I found Jaws on the desktop and pressed enter, but that didn't
turn it on. It's working now because I restarted the computer, but I would
like to know how to turn Jaws on next time this happens.

2012-10-10 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Jaws versions from v12 does indeed work for reading ebooks via the free
mainstream adobe digital reader version 2.0, for .epub and pdf files.

If one registers an Adobe ID, one can even authorise one's drm protected
purchased books with the vendor ID within adobe digital reader and read them
with jaws,, which I have tested, also said to work with Window eyes and NVDA.

At the end of the getting started guide to be downloaded from the site, of
which you'd have to google for the url, there is a list of shortcuts to work
with windows and the Mac and also specifically for jaws.

[JAWS-Users] Spell check

Hey Gang,
I'm running XP, office 2003, jaws 13.638.
When I check my spelling by f7, and there is a word that is right, but the
dictionary says no, and I want to add it to my dictionary, but when I'm
tabbing to add it that options isn't there. I've tried alt D, and alt A but

How can I get it back in the tab line?
I've looked in the options, but I don't see anything.
I just did a spell-check in this email, and the option to add to the

Thanks for all the help you can give me.

The feature of jaws having the shortcut preset for desktop icon was
taken out after FS took over. you have always had to manually put
those shortcuts back in. When doing such you don't have to write it
out. Just hit the keys you want and windows will do the rest.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to turn Jaws Back On

2012-10-10 Thread Mike O'Brien
Hi

As was sated, you can get to the run dialog by pressing Windows key+r. Or
you can open the Windows 7 start menu, either with the Windows key or
control+escape and you will be in the search box. Just type JAWS13.

However, I have seen situations where you can restart JAWS, and it never
starts to talk. You can check whether JAWS is running by going to the
Windows Task Manager and looking at the Processes tab. Unfortunately, to do
this takes another working screen reader or eyeball help. I have seen where
it has been restarted, not talking, but shows as running in Task Manager. I
don't know why this is, but suspect it has something to do with the video
intercept. The only thing I know to do in this case is reboot.

Hi David,

There are computer based software options for reading e-books. Some of
these options cross over to stand-a-lone devices, and as you know there are
also stand-a-lone devices that do not interface in a way with the computer
to allow the user to read the e-book on the computer. I'm voting that if
the topic stays with computer based e-book reading options, the topic would
be within the scope of this list. Your thoughts?

[JAWS-Users] Multi-line rich text edit boxes.

2012-10-10 Thread Dan Rossi

Hello,

I am attempting to use what is essentially a SharePoint form. I have no
problem going through most of the form, using radio buttons, check boxes,
and simple edit boxes. However, there are certain boxes that are
multi-line edit boxes. When I tab into them, no label is announced, but I
hear rich text edit box. I can type into the box no problem, but I
can't seem to close the edit box. Hitting the plus key just says PC
cursor, instead of closing the edit box and reverting to the virtual
cursor.

The only way to get out of it is to tab, but in one section of this form,
that just tabs me to the next rich text edit box, and since there is no
label associated with the edit box, I don't know what box I am in.

If I can close the edit box, go back to the virtual cursor, I can arrow
down the screen, hearing the heading that states the purpose of the next
edit box, then press e, and vwa la I am in the next box.

So, is there some magic key that I am missing that closes a multi-line
edit box?

Hello,

I am attempting to use what is essentially a SharePoint form. I have no
problem going through most of the form, using radio buttons, check boxes,
and simple edit boxes. However, there are certain boxes that are multi-line
edit boxes. When I tab into them, no label is announced, but I hear rich
text edit box. I can type into the box no problem, but I can't seem to
close the edit box. Hitting the plus key just says PC cursor, instead of
closing the edit box and reverting to the virtual cursor.

The only way to get out of it is to tab, but in one section of this form,
that just tabs me to the next rich text edit box, and since there is no
label associated with the edit box, I don't know what box I am in.

If I can close the edit box, go back to the virtual cursor, I can arrow down
the screen, hearing the heading that states the purpose of the next edit
box, then press e, and vwa la I am in the next box.

So, is there some magic key that I am missing that closes a multi-line edit

Luckily, unloading JAWS each time I need to fill in an edit box is not
necessary. I can tab out or reverse tab out of this series of boxes then
arrow my way back down. Very clugy but I'd rather find a better solution.

I've just tried messing around with custom labels, but when I label one of
them, it labels all four boxes with the same label, which is not terribly
useful.

another thing that would probably work would be to route jaws to pc cursor,
and then hit the jaws cursor key twice fast for the invisible cursor, this
way you can switch cursors, read the area where your at and see what box
your in.

the trouble is a ridge text box is not a regular html item but a microsoft
item (your probably running into a site made with asp) and movement is by
tabbing, but as you said that skips over the header.

I think the invisible cursor is your best route.

hrumph Flor, if you followed this subject a bit more you would know that
he

has backup files that he can use.

and since it seems no one else is going to give them to you i will rewrite
them for you here!

instructions for replacing/restoring your outlook mail from a harddrive
backup:
1. open outlook express
2. go to the tools menu and then to options and enter
3. control tab key to the maintenance tab, and then tab over to the
store folder ... button and enter on it.
4. shift tab back to the edit field that holds a long string address in
it,

if you work with the reading keys you will find this begins with C: and
ends in a folder, hit home then control and shift and end together to copy
this string.
5. paste it into note pad for use later
6. close out and I do mean close as in its no longer running, outlook
express.
7. go to note pad and select and copy the entire path you copied to it in
step five previously, from start (C:) to finish.
8. bring up the run dialog box, and paste the path into it and hit enter.
now you will be in the folder where the .dbx files are at for your outlook
express account.
9. go to your saved backup files, copy them, and then paste them into the
folder you opened up in step 7, oking all the replacements.
10. now restart outlook express and check your inbox, it should have the
backed up messages in it.

please save this set of instructions.

Still and all, the files may be corrupted beyond repair. (It's .dbx
files.)

Go into the storage folder and try opening up one of the BDX files
Believe there is a paid program you can get and if one follows the
prompt, think it will lead you to the program site.

There may not be anything else you can do. But
*Outside Outlook Express: Are they still .dbx files? What I might now
do is: *Rename your existing Inbox (giving it a different title,
preserving the .dbx extension). Now delete the Inbox (outside of
Outlook Express). *copy and paste one of your old files into your now
opened Outlook Express Inbox. *Repeat that whole process as often as
necessary.

I finally got McAfee to restore the files I backed up )I think?)
McAfee downloaded the files to my pc but, when trying to open them,
the info was garbled.
McAfee said they could not help any further and I neecded to contact
Microsoft on how to convert the restored files to something
rreadable.

Microsoft does not support Outlook Express anymore?

Any thoughts on how to open the files so they are readable?

Thanks so much!

The extension is .dbx in outlook Express. thus, it will be

Well, you'd think that mcAfee Tech Support would've covered that ground.
Simplest is best, however.

hrumph Flor, if you followed this subject a bit more you would know that
he

has backup files that he can use.

and since it seems no one else is going to give them to you i will
rewrite

them for you here!

instructions for replacing/restoring your outlook mail from a harddrive
backup:
1. open outlook express
2. go to the tools menu and then to options and enter
3. control tab key to the maintenance tab, and then tab over to the
store folder ... button and enter on it.
4. shift tab back to the edit field that holds a long string address in
it,

if you work with the reading keys you will find this begins with C: and
ends in a folder, hit home then control and shift and end together to
copy

this string.
5. paste it into note pad for use later
6. close out and I do mean close as in its no longer running, outlook
express.
7. go to note pad and select and copy the entire path you copied to it in
step five previously, from start (C:) to finish.
8. bring up the run dialog box, and paste the path into it and hit
enter.
now you will be in the folder where the .dbx files are at for your
outlook

express account.
9. go to your saved backup files, copy them, and then paste them into the
folder you opened up in step 7, oking all the replacements.
10. now restart outlook express and check your inbox, it should have the
backed up messages in it.

please save this set of instructions.

Hello SusieQ,

The easiest way to clear the hanging indent is to select the paragraph or
