Re: [JAWS-Users] abby fine reader and jaws
I'be been dealing wigth Abbyy on and off for a while and find it very usable, even though it might not be as 'clever' and Omnipage. As for the dirty download (what ever that means), can't say that has been my experience. Is it only with IE? Typically, I get that message if there is no internet connection. So, on the computer where you get thhat, what happens if you try opening a webpage with another browser like Firefox? - Original Message - From: Kurt Miller To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, March 25, 2016 1:18 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] IE stopped working Hi all, I have 2 computers that are exactly the same and set up the same. On one of them, when I enter on IE on the desktop, it tells me that IE has stopped working and Windows will close it if it finds a solution: or whatever that is exactly. We have all heard it at one point. The thing is the other computer opens IE just fine. We can get Edge to work but not IE. It has been 2 days now and it will still say the same thing. Would anyone have any idea of what to do? Running Windows 10, 64 bit, and latest version of JAWS 17. Thanks in advance for any ideas. It means he put it through the washer then hung it out to dry. Hence his handle, the HangMan. For the record, Kimsan, have you worked with FS's Convenient OCR? I'm surprised how effective and fast it is. My backup is OmniPage, though it will cost you something like $90, depending on whether there's a sale, etc. Actually, OmniPage is what Convenient OCR is based on. I've had OmniPage a lot longer than Convenient OCR has been around, and I still sometimes find it useful to use it independently. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Kimsan Sent: Monday, March 28, 2016 1:02 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] abby fine reader and jaws Huh? when it downloaded, it was dirty, my system cleaned it up. Re: [JAWS-Users] abby fine reader and jaws
I've been poking around on the options page and can't seem to find anything you might be able to change to make it work better. You might try their technical support. I've had very good luck with them. If you decide to use their tech support, you'll need to tell them that because of your screen reader you need to use team viewer instead of the first remoting option they offer you. This is from FS. How to get Adobe Reader to open in its own window by Freedom Scientific You actually make this change in the Adobe Reader application using the instructions below: A. Using the Accessibility Set Up Assistant When you launch a PDF the first time, the accessibility set up assistant opens. If the accessibility wizard has already run, do the following to open it: 1. Press ALT+E to open the Edit menu. 2. Press Y to select Accessibility submenu. 3. Press ENTER on Set Up Assistant. The first page of this five page dialog box opens. The default choice is fine, press ENTER to move to the next page. 4. On the second page you can change things if you wish, but by default it is OK. Press ENTER to move to page three. 5. On the third page you can change things if you wish, but by default it is OK. Press ENTER to move to page four. 6. On the fourth page, if you want to use the list of links, list of headings, and the JAWS find command so on to access long documents, change the radio button from "For large documents, only read the currently visible pages" to "Read the entire document at once." If you do not make this change, in long documents JAWS only sees the links and headings on the current page. Additionally, JAWS can only search the current page with the JAWS find command. If you do select read the entire document at once, it may take a few seconds longer to process large documents, but it is worth it to be able to see the links and headings in the entire document, or to search the entire document with the JAWS find. 7. Press ENTER to move to page five of the Set Up Assistant. 8. If the check box for Reopen documents to the last viewed page is checked, you may want to uncheck this. It is a personal preference. TAB through until you reach the check box for "Display PDF documents in the web browser," and uncheck it. 9. Press ENTER to activate the Done button. B. Additional changes in Adobe Reader XI preferences. 1. Press CTRL+K to open the Adobe Reader XI preferences. 2. In the Categories list on the left side of the dialog box, choose Accessibility. 3. Press TAB to move to the item, Show Portfolios in Files mode (not checked by default) - check this. 4. Press TAB to move back to the Categories list and choose Security (Enhanced). 5. Press TAB to move to Enable Protected Mode at startup (checked by default) - uncheck this. 6. Press TAB to move to the OK button, and activate it with the SPACEBAR. NOTE: The option to view PDF documents in the browser is no longer found in the Preferences. You must use the Set Up Assistant to find this This is the option you want to make sure you change so it will not show the PDF files in the browser.
