[JAWS-Users] Some help with VLC media player and more advanced features
Hi everyone. I use this programme for videos and it works better than any others. I use Winamp for audio-only playback as of now and am fiddling with Foobar 2000, which seems very promising. But I would like to get greater functionality from VlC as well. To that end, I have the following questions: 1. How does a screen-reader user manipulate playlists? I can add folders, certainly. I can move between tracks with the "n" and "p" keys. How can I shuffle or randomise a playlist? The up and down arrow keys do not seem to move throught eh fils. I can use the "next" and "previous" keys for this, as mentioned, but what if I want to select another track in the playlist without actually stopping playback or playing through all the tracks until I get to the one I want? How can I get JAWS to read the *names* of the tracks as I move through them? 2. Setting the equalizer. A very necessary thing, for certain types of music as well as especially older, more underground films where the soundtrack is fairly muffled. I have figured out how to select and adjust a preset. However, any adjustments I make are not saved, unless I modify the default setting through a very cumbersome method that involves entering in a series of numbers representing the eq values. Does anyone have a more efficient way of doing this? 3. Synchronising audio and video tracks. So far I have not really found a way to do this properly without sighted assistance. I can carry out the first few steps of adding a separate audio track to a video file, but am stymied when opening the "play" button, which has some kind of drop-down menu attached to it that jAWS does not seem to see. Any thoughts? Thanks. For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Below are steps using Openbook & turning off sleep mode as an example. When you shift + tab into the application list & find the application you want, you need to tab 1 time into the Settings Center for that application. Pressing enter on the application closes the Settings Center. So, here is how I accessed the Openbook Settings Center: 1. While in Outlook Express I pressed Insert key + 6, on the number row above the main keyboard to open the Outlook Express Settings Center. 2. I invoked the keystroke, shift + tab, to get into the application list. 3. I pressed the letter O, until I had Openbook highlighted. 4. I tabbed 1 time into the Openbook Settings Center. 5. I Typed, sleep, into the search edit field & waited a few seconds for the list to populate & arrowed down to Sleep Mode . miscellaneous, & pressed enter. 6. Now, right here the spacebar needs to be pressed to toggle the options until Jaws reports, sleep mode Disable. 7. Tab to apply, press the spacebar, tab to okay, press the spacebar to save your changes & close. 8. Now start, Openbook, & press, Control + F5 to temporarily ttoggle speech off in Openbook. The, Control + F5, keystroke is a toggle, so you can invoke this keystroke to turn speech back on. With speech off Jaws will now be your screenreading program. If you want to make your change permanent, you need to go into Openbook's settings with the keystroke, Alt + G, arrow up / down to, Save the Settings, press enter, tab to the, Okay button, press enter, & press enter on the, Yes, option of the dialogue that comes up. If you don't save the settings, your prior Openbook's default settings will be used the next time you start Openbook, but Jaws will also be enabled. So, you need to put Jaws back into Sleep Mode by following steps 1 thru 7 from above, but the following option in step #6, needs to be changed to, Sleep Mode Enabled & Unload the Synthesizer. - Original Message - From: cheez To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Saturday, January 06, 2018 5:09 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] openbook Eh, Kevin, how does one do that? Dear respected friend, the matter of fact is that it has not gone but Microsoft wants it to abandon one day or another! There are 3 Skypes are available at present. Skype classic which most of visually challenged persons are using., Skype app for windows 10 which very few blind people are using because the script of it is relatively new and New Skype for desktop which Microsoft wants to replace with Skype classic. It seams that you have been using Skype classic with JAWS script for Skype version 622b revision 983. He was a lovely man whom I knew from the Blind Audible list and the VR Stream Users list. He provided me with an incredible amount of help with my Victor Reader Stream and with using Audible when I was a member. His directions were always clear and concise and he was so very patient. On my Dell Xps-1501 laptop running Windows 7 64 bit, Windows Media player tries to launch when I try to play a file someone sent me. The file plays for a couple of seconds and stops. I tried to change the setting in default programs and got nowhere. I went into the Winamp preferences menu and got nowhere using that menu either. Could somebody refresh my memory so I can make Winamp the default player on my laptop? Incidentally, on my desktop computer running the latest version of Windows 10 and Winamp, the files from within the main folder play just fine. Thanks. Mike M. [JAWS-Users] G.W. Cox
I'm sorry to report that Jerry, who used his formal G.W. Cox name in his posts, died on January 3rd. I don't know if he posted here, but either way, some current members will recall him from another JAWS list. during the years he was an active contributor, he gave accurate, concise and always helpful advice. He and I had interests in common and became friends off-list. From that, I know that he also helped a number of people over the phone. Jerry was a Vietnam vet, though he became a critic of that war, and later editor of newspapers in Puerto Rico and New Mexico. He grew up in or near Chicago and obtained his college degree from the University of Oklahoma. If I remember correctly, he lost his vision shortly after 2000 and later sustained a stroke that impaired his speech and movement. But since he hardly ever spoke of such things and never complained, the details haven't stayed in my head. He had a warm sense of humor and an eagerness to share his knowledge and the wisdom he'd gained from experience. He leaves behind his wife, the daughter he doted on and his beloved sister, among many others whose lives he touched. He was a good man, and I will miss him. A "reception" will be held for him on Monday between 4 and 6 Mountain Time, and a webpage has been set up for anyone who would like to read his obituary and maybe post a remembrance.
