Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and freezing
I am using Windows 10 and JAWS 18 and notice it as well for a while. I thought it was my computer. However, the interesting thing is we were told at some point if the computer freezes, JAWS will restart. Not sure which one it is. However, it is irritating. Should not be occurring with a HP laptop with 8G. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and freezing
I'm going to have to pay more attention to this now. The only time I absolutely know when Jaws freezes on me is when running a spell check in Outlook before sending a message. It'll sometimes hang for a bit or outright crash. I do get the odd Jaws freezing/hanging, but it's so random otherwise that outside of the spellcheck thing, I can't really pinpoint a specific behavior or sequence to it. I can usually tell when it crashes because my Brailliant display will then just show the standard "Humanware Brailliant BI 40" message until Jaws comes back. This too is how I can tell in general when Jaws has dumped on me since sometimes it can also be a pop up on the screen or some other program that's frozen and gotte in the way of Jaws's ability to speak. My sighted wife's bailed me out a few times by reaching over and grabbing the mouse and closing whatever might be on the screen. And like magic, Jaws comes back on its own. There was an issue earlier this morning with Malwarebytes and some webcheck update that was pushed out causing some weird ram spike and making everything slow, crashy and buggy. It was locking up Jaws, NVDA and Narrator. No matter what I tried, I would lose speech and I would have to restart my desktop and laptop. The only way I found out that it was Malwarebytes was by jumping online between pc reboots and browsing through Twitter with my iPhone. There I saw a tweet by them acknowledging that an app update was causing problems for folks. They put out a fix about an hour later and both machines for me at least are working as they should. It was a pretty stressful morning for sure. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of joediner...@gmail.com Sent: Saturday, January 27, 2018 2:54 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and freezing I am running JAWS 2018 on a Windows 10 Pro machine and experiencing the same thing regarding freezing. I had that problem on my Windows 8 laptop with Jaws 17. Naturally, FS told me it was my computer so they did updates. I bought a new windows 10 laptop running Jaws 18 and I have recently started having the same problem. If somebody figures it out, I hope it is shared. This is frustrating! Take care! Yeah, same here. At first I thought it was Avast, when I accidentally installed it with CCleaner, but after removing Avast, it still occurred. Hi, I didn't know JAWS already had a script that simulates this. It seems to be designed for use with a touch screen. When you modified the Default script file in JAWS 18 and pressed CTRL+S, Script Manager saved the modified version in the JAWS user folder. When you imported settings to JAWS 2018 the file was also saved in the JAWS 2018 user folder, but since the file is from 18.0 and you didn't used the Use statement, the problem is that JAWS 2018 is using the Default.jsb file based on JAWS 18.0. If I do the change, will it miss up the application key on the laptop? Patti Hi Instead of Modifying the default.jss and default.jsb files for a new script, you could set up a keystroke to make the PrintScreen key be your applications key. There is already a script in JAWS 17, 18, 2018 and possibly earlier to invoke the applications key. If you do not currently have a default.jkm file in your JAWS user folder, create a new file with the full name of default.jkm in your JAWS user folder and add the following lines: [Common Keys] PrintScreen=SendApplicationKey If you already have a default.jkm file in your JAWS user folder just add the line PrintScreen=SendApplicationKey In the [Common Keys]Section of the file. It is dangerous to have a copy of the default.jsb file in your JAWS user folder. Any JAWS update can install a new version of default.jsb that can make your copy of that file useless. And has been pointed out, you can only use that copy of default.jsb with the version and update that were used to save it. But using a keystroke instead will be compatible with any version of JAWS. Also the JKM file can be moved to any version of JAWS. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Ralph Supernaw Sent: Thursday, January 25, 2018 02:03 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 2018 repair Thanks for the help. To fix this, with JAWS closed, go to the following folder: C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Roaming\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2018\Settings\Enu In this folder, find and delete the files named Default.jss and Default.jsb, then restart JAWS and the problem should be resolved. As a suggestion, if your keyboard hasn't the Applications key, you usually won't need to make any modifications to get back that functionality into another key. This is because Windows always had a keyboard shortcut for opening context menus when your keyboard has not Applications key: you can just press SHIFT+F10 and, except in less standard programs like games in full SHIFT+screen mode, you will see the same context menu. Similarly, if you're using a keyboard in which there's no Windows key, you can quickly open the Start menu by pressing CTRL+ESCAPE.
