Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading Attachments
I am using Windows 10 and Office 365. When I receive attachments in an email I open the email then SHIFT + TAB once to move me up to the first attachment on the left. Then you can either press ENTER to open the attachment or use your Applications key to do the same. If there are more than one attachment after your SHIFT + TAB you can simply right arrow to the next & the next attachment & repeat the ENTER to read it. George A. Re: [JAWS-Users] Just For Fun, Emoji
Hi, I'll try my best to address several questions about emoji panel in one go: Q. What is emoji? Emoji (a shorthand Japanese for "emotion characters", from Romanization of "emo" and "ji" (character)) is a picture that represents objects, emotions, people, events and so on. This came about in the late 1990's where people wanted to conserve space on data usage yet wanted to express their emotions to the fullest. This became pop0ular among Japanese mobile phone users via SMS (short messaging service) before it gain widespread usage in 2010's. Q. How do I read emoji? It'll depend on screen reader and synthesizer in use. Some synthesizers do support announcing emojis, while others don't. Also, the ability to recognize emojis will depend on how the screen reader processes Unicode data and instructions sent to speech synthesizers regarding how to process such characters. Q. How do I input emoji? In Windows 10 Version 1709 (Fall Creators Update) and later, you can browse and insert emoji by pressing Windows+period or Windows+semicolon. Note that in 1709 and 1803 (April 2018 Update), only United States English keyboard layout will let you browse emojis. In Redstone 5 (under development), this restriction is gone. In 1709 and 1803, once emoji panel opens, press the arrow keys to move through emojis. Press Tab to cycle through emoji categories, or if you're looking for a specific emoji, type the name and the panel will return suggestions. To insert a given emoji, press Enter. In Redstone 5, you can still use arrow keys to move through emojis. However, pressing Tab will not cycle through categories; rather, it'll switch between emojis and categories. To select a different emoji category, press Tab to go the categories, then use left or right arrows to move through categories and press Enter. In case of People category, you can choose a skin tone. Once the emoji is found, press Enter. Q. Does JAWS support emoji panel? Not at this time (according to tests). Some users asked VFO regarding this matter not long ago. Q. Does other screen readers support emoji panel? Write to me privately regarding this matter please (not only to keep the topic on scope, but also because I am the one who brought support for emoji panel for a certain screen reader; hint: there will come a day when a certain scripts will not be required to interact with emoji panel, but that's for another time). Re: [JAWS-Users] Just For Fun, Emoji
Yes. This new Windows 10 feature still doesn’t' appear to be accessible with Jaws. I've also come across some emojis by accident with the alt plus numpad sequence when I've meant to type something else. Accented vowel, º, ñ for example. ☺ = alt plus #1. ☻ = alt plus #2. ♥ = alt plus #3 and so on. But considering that there are tons and tons of emojis and that you can also select shade of skin color for the more ethno-centric conscious folks, it's still pretty much a no go. I want to say that Leacy or however you spell it has some sort of emoji function if you buy their scripts, but I don't really have a need for leasy products and am not jonesing enough to emoji my heart out to pay for that specific feature with their script package. Especially now that it seems to be built in to Windows 10. I would have to imagine that it'll soon enough be part of the Jaws core function. This of course will probably be touted as some major new Jaws feature eating up one of my SMAs instead of addressing long standing bugs though. You see? A grumpy or angry face emoji would have been perfect at the end of that last sentence... -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List On Behalf Of Rebecca Lineberger Sent: Thursday, June 21, 2018 5:10 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Just For Fun, Emoji From what my sighted friend says, these are pictures--all kinds of things: faces, animals, sports stuff, musical instruments--that pop up on the screen when you press Windows key and either the period or the semicolon. Re: [JAWS-Users] Just For Fun, Emoji
Hey. Yes, that nVDA feature is, I think, a part of Windows 10 App Essentials. I haven't played with it. I do use them on my phone (android, not iphone), but always feel it's kind of a silly thing to do. Still, especially when talking with my landlady, sometimes a simple emoji is best, as she just wants to go on and on and on, and I have to indicate I'm listening, somehow. Lol It is a little odd that JAWS can recognise them but there's no current way to select one to input in your messages and such. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Rebecca Lineberger Sent: June 21, 2018 6:15 PM To: jaws user's list Subject: [JAWS-Users] Just For Fun, Emoji I was reading on another JAWS List and someone had used an emoji, if that's the right word. JAWS described it when I was reading with the down-arrow key but not the left and right arrows, so it would seem that there was no colon and closed parenthesis to make a smiling face. Windows 10 can, they say, bring up a list of emoji with Windows key and either the period or the semicolon. But if it does, JAWS can't see them, and neither can I! LOL. I tried recognizing the screen, but got no descriptions. I googled and found that there is an add-on for NVDA that will make these emoji accessible. Not having NVDA installed, I can't check. It would be fun if JAWS had this since we all send stuff to sighted friends. Presumably, everyone can already do this on their iPhones, but alas, no iPhone yet. Hi Cristóbal, I'm also experimenting this type of issues, especially on slow machines. Although stability with Firefox 60 was considerably inproved in the latest JAWS 2018 update, it is still far from the smooth experience before Firefox 57, which yet requires me to use Chrome most of the time, especially on my netbook. 2018-06-21 19:08 GMT-03:00 Cristóbal : > Hello list, > > I’ve asked this question before, but am really noticing it more and more > these past few days. [JAWS-Users] Issues with Jaws 2018 losing focus in Firefox 60.x
Hello list, Ive asked this question before, but am really noticing it more and more these past few days. Using the latest Firefox 60.X and Jaws 2018, Jaws focus seems to be going blank every few seconds. It doesnt matter if Im actively navigating the page or if its just passively there. Jaws will just say blank and maybe speak the title of the page Im on, but theres no feedback if I arrow around or use the navigation keys. I can get focus back easy enough by maximizing the window or pressing tab/shift plus tab or alt plus tab out of the window, but for one thing, its annoying as all get out and its occurring so much now, its becoming quite disruptive. This has more or less been there for a while now, but either Im really just getting tired of having to deal with it and am simply noticing it more or it is as I feel, picking up more in frequency. One thing I have noticed is that when I get a sound alert from an incoming email from Outlook for example, Jaws will lose its focus. To be clear, this also happens just randomelly as well, but its pretty consistent with this incoming email alert correlation. Anyone else dealing with this problem? I emailed VFO a while back and got the standard were not experiencing this. It could be your set up. Response. Im dealing with a similar issue in Outlook 2016, but thats for another email. Anyway, please tell me Im not the only one fighting with these Jaws focus issues Thanks, Cristobal For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem with OCR on a TIF file with multiple pages
Hi Debby, This is certainly something that FS should inprove in a future major or minnor release. As a workaround, however, you could save the file as PDF by using a virtual printer, such as the one included with Foxit Reader (this software is comparably accessible as Adobe Reader and easier to create basic things) or the one built into Windows 10, called Microsoft Print to PDF. In my experience, JAWS has no problem recognizing a PDF file with multiple pages. Hi Fernando. I do not know, but I swear I was talking about this on a facebook post sometime late last year, and a friend replied and told me how it could be done. This was not a screen-reader user, but from the way he made it sound, it was something that could be easily accomplishable through the keyboard. I can't remember for the life of me what was said in that discussion as I never really pursued it. I'll have to look back and see if I can find it, or maybe just ask him. I always thought it was really unfortunate that you couldn't use html tags on facebook. Now I'm trying to format text on a note, but JAWS is not detecting the links with the different formattings. I know these links are present, because when I select text it appears, below the Post button, a button saying Close the Popup and Return, which is not present when no text is selected. I've tried both with Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer, both with JAWS and NVDA, with the same results in all cases. Do you think the budget could stretch to accommodate an OCR package for you? I don't think it'd have to be anything too fancy or expensive. Abbyy Finereader would probably do the trick. Then you could import all the .tifs into the programme and oCR them as if you had scanned them yourself. To make the Select a Voice Profile dialog to detect the application from which you opened it, open it by pressing CTRL+JAWS+S from wittin the desired application instead of using the JAWS menus. Hope it helps! -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List On Behalf Of Marie Sent: Tuesday, June 19, 2018 10:40 PM To: Jaws User Group Subject: [JAWS-Users] Voice profiles In the past I could change the voice just for the Word program by going into options/voices/voice profiles Now when I go into that dialog box it only wants to change the voice for the Jaws window instead of Word? I am confused. Re: [JAWS-Users] attachment unavailable to save in wlm any suggestions?
Hello Janie, When the message with the attachment is open, try pressing insert with a to bring the attachment into view or tabbing to the attachment itself and pressing shift with f10 or the applications key on it. I am thinking that this should bring up a context menu where one of the options will be save. I have not used Windows live mail myself but this is just a guess that I hope will help. LOL LOL Try the following: 1. Open your browser of choice, and open the Settings Center. 2. Arrow down to, Text Processing, and right arrow to open. 3. Down arrow 1 time to, General, & right arrow to open. 4. There are 17 items in here, and you want to down arrow to #14, Say Item State First, this should be checked. 5. Down arrow 2 times to #16, Say Window State First, and this should be checked. Note: If you tab 1 time on any of these options you will get a description of it. 6. Tab to, apply, press spacebar, tab to, Okay, press enter to save and close. Hope this helps, but let us know if this works for you or not, so we'll know whether or not to check other settings.
