Hi Folks. A few years ago I had my PC reformatted and Avast was installed as my anti-virus. This caused quite a number of problems with Jaws not performing properly and my computer not functioning as it should. Avast was removed and AVG was installed and things then worked fine. I subsequently bought a new computer and as AVG wasn't as good as it once was; it became increasingly less accessible I thought with newer versions of Jaws that perhaps Avast would be fine now. Well this has not proved to be the case of late. With Jaws 14 and Jaws 15 every now and then I would lose speech and could not re-launch it, at times I had to restart the PC. This would happen at random times without a pattern and it became irritating. When my speech failed I couldn't even launch NVDA to inquire of what might be the problem. This would happen when backing out of folders or when going back to a previous web page. I used to use the backspace for this command but this problem occurred much too often. I then started to use the alt/left arrow to back out of folders and move backwards on web pages and that helped to a limited degree as it happened less often, but it still happened too frequently. Avast has now been uninstalled and my PC is working like a dream, so fast reacting and I can work at speed with confidence that the computer and Jaws will keep up and not have a seizure. I have come to the conclusion that Avast and Jaws are not really on good terms. I can't speak for other screen readers but I know there is a problem with Jaws and Avast. At this moment I have no anti-virus but I'm going to install Spybot as they now also have an anti-virus version but you must pay for that. Has anyone else had a similar problem with Avast? Walter. You will hear all kinds of stuff spoken but the sound of the video should increase in volume. Hi There is a way to do this. 1. Start playing the specific youtube video. 2. Use Jaws key plus z to turn off the virtual cursor. 3. Tab until you reach the unmute button. It is important to know that you have to tab quite a few times until you get there. 5. When you get to the unmute button, use the up arrow to turn the volume up again. You will hear all kinds of stuff spoken but the sound of the video should increase in volume. The important thing is to turn off the virtual cursor before following the other steps and turn it on again afterwards. This worked for me. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Sneha nair Sent: 05 October 2013 06:37 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] unmuting youtube. Are you working in Microsoft Word 2010? If so, how many times have you tried to jump into a document and start making some changes and nothing happens? Oh, that's right. You forgot to click on that annoying, little, yellow button on the top of the document. You idiot! As annoying as it may be, there are valid reasons for this new security feature in Office 2010, which is an improvement over security features in previous versions of Office. As explained by the Microsoft Office 2010 Engineering Team... With any piece of complex software, over time new file parsing exploits against it may be found. The older Office binary file formats had been susceptible to these types of attacks. Over the past years hackers have discovered ways to manipulate Office binary files so that when they are opened and parsed, they cause their own code embedded within the file to run. To address these binary file parsing attacks in Office 2007, several new XML based file formats were introduced. If you are generally savvy enough to not open documents from suspicious sources and enjoy an occasional walk on the wild side, well then here is a quick how-to on just turning the darn thing off permanently: 1.Open any Office 2010 application (Ex: Word or Excel). 2.Click on Office or File button, and select Options. 3.Under Options select Trust Center in the left pane. 4.Click on Trust Center Settings in the right pane. 5.Click on the Protected View in the left pane of Trust Center window. 6.Check/Uncheck Protected Mode Options below to fit your needs If you want to take advantage of this security feature in a customized way, you can actually go back to step 6 and set specific Trusted Publishers, Locations and Documents right from this Window. Unfortunately, you need to apply these setting to each Microsoft Office application individually. I think I need ie 8 but there were issues with it so I returned to ie7. I don't want to buy a new computer yet, preferring to wait for windows 8. My computer is erratic, sometimes faster but mostly slow until it just stops to catch its breath for a minute or so. Very frustrating. So what do you think? If ie 9 is more suited to windows 7, should I go ahead and try ie8? Can I return to ie7 once I have gone to ie 8? Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Or is my copy of Jaws okay to use on more than one computer? I don't know if the license will allow me to do that. Also, if it is allowable to use Jaws on more than one computer and since I have the original DVD of Jaws 11 which does not have the latest updates, how do I get the authorization I need so that I will not be in the demo mode? I figure that I can download the latest version from FS with 64 bits, but do I need to install Jaws from my DVD first? If I need to purchase an additional license, how much does it cost? When you press enter it will take you out of View menu and back into the folder. 4. Press alt + V again to open the View menu again and open the sort by option again. 5. Arrow down to ascending and press enter. You are now back in your folder and your messages should be in alphabetical order with the A's at the top and the Z's at the bottom. Re: [JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs
I agree and I have sent one. - Original Message - From: David Griffith [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Sunday, March 30, 2008 3:31 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs In theory a good idea but in practice a little unrealistic at the moment I think. sadly it looks like we may not be spoilt for choice and we may not have this luxury. . In an ideal world we could line up a set of accessible comparable internet security programs and find relative merits on security performance. With Norton, MacAfee, AVG, and NOD32 all going inaccessible now to already add to pre-existing inaccessible programs it's a pretty bleak outlook and it is difficult to see what can be compared. I already had to remove the security program that came with my PC as it was inaccessible. It actually rated pretty highly in security terms but was useless as it kept on alerting me and I could not do anything to respond to it. Some people have recommended Avast on this list but I would personally be reluctant to go back to this as it completely screwed up a PC of mine a few years ago , I had to spend hours trying to change registry settings and I had to eventually do a complete new windows install. Hopefully its not so aggressive with its modification of windows now but it was a program I vowed never to use again. I have heard some reports that Pccillen is still accessible but I do not know much about this. I am with AVG 7.5 for the time being and as long as I am not compelled to move up to 8 I should b ok. I think all of us on this list using AVG should send emails backing up the one that David sent. David Ferrin [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: Don and Cher Bosch [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, March 28, 2008 3:27 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs I've been successfully using BitDefender Antivirus Plus v10 for about 18 months. It's an entire suite, was highly recommended by Cnet, and is totally accessible by selecting the components from the system tray. It costs $50 for a license for 2 computers for two years. Not bad! The only time I've had to use the JAWS cursor was when configuring a scheduled scan. Cher -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of David Ferrin Sent: Tuesday, March 25, 2008 9:40 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] security software and anti virus programs So if I am following this thread correctly AVG 8 is no longer accessible. If memory serves Norton hasn't been accessible for a few years already. Nod 32 has stopped being usable by screen readers, and MacAfee hasn't been an issue for a long time. So the question is what are we supposed to do in order to protect ourselves from the nasty people of the world. Can I stay with AVG 7.5 or are they going to try and force me to upgrade? There is also this program called something like CA or near to that name, any ideas on that out there?
