I agree. The first beta of JAWS 12 worked great. Once I installed the
update yesterday, I'm noticing quirky behavior when reading web pages.

Like JAWS is now reading images contained within a div../div tag
as a form button. It's quite annoying and I see no way of turning it off.

Hello all.
Before possibly reporting this to Freedom Scientific through their bug
report form, I am noticing inconsistent behaviour when reading messages
in Thunderbird. For example JAWS will read part of the body of the
message twice, with the second time reading in its entirity. whereas
other times it reads the message fine. This did not happen with the
first public beta.

Hi all;
I have 10.00 and XP home.
When I am in Microsoft word and go to the list of files by hitting Control
O.
I then shift tab until I get the list of files.
It seems that JAWS does not read the entire list.
JAWS seems to read every third file.
I will hit the say line and JAWS reads the name of the file and says 11
of 83.
I down arrow once and it says the name of the file 14 of 83.
I can't find 12 and 13.
It's like this down the entire list, reading third file.

Thanks for any help.

Hi all, here's a response I got off Freedom Scientific Technical Support
regarding the problems I discussed in the latest JAWS update. It seems a bit
strange, as I thought I was told that I could contact Technical Support,
even though I don't own a JAWS licence? Could someone kindly correct me on
this policy, as I'm slightly embarrassed and ashamed and could do with some
reassurance. I had to reply to him and state that I was running it as a demo
and therefore I very much doubt they could help me further. Thanks, and now
here's the message.

Hi Christopher,
Thank you for your e-mail. I have looked you up in our records, and show
you with JAWS version 3.7. If possible, I would appreciate it if you could
provide me with your JAWS 9.0 serial number. In addition, please provide me
with your phone number, and the best time to call, so the product manager
Eric Damery and myself can call and address your concerns. If we could call
Monday morning, that would be ideal for us. I would also need to know where
you are located for calling purposes.

User subject description is = JAWS 9.0.2152, Not Impressed So Far

Dear Sir/madam,

I've just installed the latest build of JAWS 9, JAWS 9.0.2152, running on

an HP Compaq Presario C700 Notebook PC with Windows Vista Home Premium. I

wish to report two problems with this latest build, which were not

introduced with previous builds of JAWS 9, including the recent build

(9.0.552).

1. Eloquence Software synthesizer: When I type, it sounds as if it has

some type of chorus affect. I can't really describe the effect, but it's

strange anyhow. It doesn't happen as much when I'm reading something.

2. When I compose an HTML message using Outlook 2003, JAWS grinds to a

halt for a few seconds then starts talking again. This happens when I

type really fast. When I compose in plain text however, it's not as

sluggish, see below.

3. When I type in general, there appears to be a slight lag from when I

press a character on the keyboard to when JAWS announces what I've

entered.

Please note that these problems did not exist with all previous builds of

JAWS 9, including the recent build (9.0.552).

Thanks in advance for taking these problems into consideration, and I look

forward to hearing from you.

Yours Sincerely,

Christopher Hallsworth

[JAWS-Users] Microsoft word 2000

2007-12-10 Thread Dan H.
I am using ise7, the latest jaws 9 and word 2000. I can't remember the
change I need to make
in the configuration file so word documents can be red normally.

Would appreciate a hint.

Re: [JAWS-Users] FW: Jaws speed Rate = sighted reading?

Rather than speed, work on comprehension.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] FW: Jaws speed Rate = sighted reading?

Dear List

In common with I think a lot of people I have gradually increased the speed
of Jaws as I have got used to the voices at speed. This certainly makes me
more efficient.

I started at 25% which I think is default and am now at 50% which is
probably slow for a lot of people but hopefully I can still improve.
However is anybody aware if there is a known Jaws speech rate which
approximates to the speed of an a average sighted reader. I realise a fast
sighted reader will always outperform a jaws reader but not everybody is
fast.

I don't know if this information is out there but it would be kind of
reassuring to know at what rate Jaws should be cranked up to become
equivalent to an average person reading with eyes.

It is a kind of ambition of mine to read as fast as a sighted reader if
possible.

Regards

David Griffith

Just remember most sighted people read at different rates.

My comprehension is excellent and has to be because of my studies and work.

I never increase speed at the cost of comprehension. I've found this to be a
pretty natural progression as long as you do it gradually. I spent quite a
long time at 40% and then 45% and have recently come up to 50%. What I find
it that the new rate sounds rapid until you get used to it whereby it seems
to become normal.

I might experiment with timing a sighted person reading a document on paper.
Presumably I can then time different Jaws speeds on this document to learn
which is the equivalent rate to this person's sighted reading. Not sure I
can get many people involved so it will only be an insight.

Not scientific but might be interesting.
