Re: [JAWS-Users] Spell Check in MS Word 2016

2018-06-05 Thread Jim Fettgather
This is very interesting.
I am using Jaws 2018 with Word 2016, but I am using Office 365
version, so there could be incremental updates to the spell checker.
When pressing F7, Jaws says the misspelled word, I can then tab to
Read Sentence, and finally, a list of suggestions is shown, along with
synonyms, just so that you can make sure you are choosing the correct
word. You can use up and down arros to navigate the list of
suggestions.
Then, after pressing enter, the next misspelled word is spoken, and I
can just tab to the list of choices again.
I find it to be a very seamless experience, and a vast improvement
over the spell check in Office 2013.

While playing a video, turn off the virtual cursor with insert Z.
Then, use K to pause or play the video, J to rewind, and L to fast forward.

Hello all- I have seen that sighted people can skip through a YouTube video
to get to a certain point. When the video is paused I can hear that there is
a type of bar that allows movement through the video. Is there a way that we
can skip through the video? I am using JAWS 15 with Windows 7 64bit.

2018-05-07 Thread Jim Fettgather
I am not sure, I had this exact same issue, the folder would show up, but not
have a folder name.
Jaws would read it as 24 of 24, with no title, but when it was opened, all of
the control panel items were there.

Maybe it is supposed to be a well kept secret!

Hi All,

Running Windows 10 Pro latest 1803 & J16 thru J2018 latest. There's a
little so called trick you do called GodMode, and what this is, is a folder
you create using the steps below to put all the Windows control panels
within a single folder. First the info, then my problem!

God Mode in Windows 10
Enable God Mode in Windows 10
1. Make sure your system account has administrative privileges
2. Right-click on the Windows 10 desktop and choose New > Folder
3. Name the folder:

GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

and hit enter/return to make it stick
You can actually name the folder anything you want like NinjaCat mode.
Simply replace 'GodMode' before the {} characters to your liking.

My problem:
When I rename this New folder it remains empty / blank! Jaws will not read
the folder name / title, and even a sighted person does not see a name /
title! But, if you open the folder what ever I've named this folder can be
read with the, Alt + D, address bar keystroke, and all the Windows control
panels are there. Does anyone have any idea why this folder, and only this
folder, can be named / titled, but not read by a screenreader or by a
sighted person?

Any and all advice / help will be greatly appreciated and graciously
accepted! Thanks mooy moocho.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Amazon.com and screen readers

2018-01-20 Thread Jim Fettgather

Here's why I had found that Amazon phone number to be helpful.
For several weeks I had been attempting to purchase a single edition of a
newspaper from the site.
The radio buttons were such that they would trigger prematurely, causing me
to purchase the incorrect edition.
For three weeks, I called that number, requested a refund for having
purchased the wrong newspaper, explained the problem as best I could, and
politely suggested, please please, this problem must be fixed.

It was fixed after my repeated phone calls.
Whenever accessibility is broken, This is not an ideal situation, but at
least they eventually fixed the problem with purchasing single edition
newspapers.

I found this to be quite interesting and helpful. The Amazon web site
detects if you are using jaws, probably other screen readers as well. Anyway
when it detects jaws a screen overlay is also displayed giving phone number
contact information for people with disabilities.
The other day I needed to call and asked Karen to bring up the page on her I
pad. She told me that there is no such number. I came upstairs and there it
was. She since did a search and learned that it detects screen readers.
What great customer service.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws 2018 and OCR Results

2017-10-26 Thread Jim Fettgather
Just having installed Jaws 2018, Windows 10 Creators Edition, I had a
problem both with the built in scanning feature, and with an image
based PDF.
Using Insert Space, followed by O, followed by A, the scanner choices
came up, the scanner scanned a page, and the virtual viewer came up on
the screen.
Jaws indicated that the page was right side up.

I was informed that the text was there visually, and the virtual
cursor was active, but Jaws indicated, blank, blank, blank when trying
to read the content.
The exact same thing happened when I requested Jaws to recognize an
image based PDF, the text was apparently visual on screen, but not
read by Jaws using any cursor at all, just blank, blank, blank..
Any suggestions for this strange behavior?
Thanks.

The shortcut key for this is?

4, enter on clear formatting
5, press F6 again
6, press ctrl space bar
7, up arrow to close

Hello- What Adrian says works quite well. There is another option, if I am
in a document that has different formatting features that I don't want I
select the whole doc with Control a or I select a specific portion of a
document if the issue are related to only one part of the doc. Then, I
press the Alt key and make sure I am on the Home menu. I arrow down once and
tab through the formatting choices until I get to "Clear formatting." I
press enter on the clear formatting choice and all formatting returns to
what the default is set for in MS Word. At that point I can make any
changes I wish for the whole doc or portions of that doc.

Morning all.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to change the font size in Word 2013,
if the original text is not uniform i.e., some of the text is a different
size than other parts of text? I want to enlarge text, and reduce text sizes
in a word document as a whole document; and not have to go through the
document and change the sizes one part at a time. I hope this makes sense. I
am using JAWS 17, Word 2013 (as stated before), Windows 10, and a dell
laptop. Many thanks in advance.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Edge

2017-07-09 Thread Jim Fettgather
I must respectfully suggest that if you do have the option of updating
Word 2016 to the very latest version, the choices in the spell check
dialog are now accessed by simply pressing the tab key, and it works
very very well.
It is highly accessible, I am an office 365 subscriber, so that is how
I was able to get the latest update.
I am unsure about installations of Office that are not on a 365
subscription, but I believe that you can go to the Accounts tab under
the file tab and attempt to check for updates.
I completely acknowledge the hideous situation with the Edge browser,
but I believe that Microsoft has been pretty transparent in making
their plans known to incrementally improve accessibility of their
Windows and Office products.

Re: [JAWS-Users] kendle for pc

2017-06-20 Thread Jim Fettgather
This is with the very latest Jaws 18 update, from the Freedom Scientific Page.
Amazon Kindle App Support
JAWS now supports reading books in Amazon's Kindle for PC app version
1.19 and later. This enables users to access books purchased through
the Amazon Kindle store right on their Windows PC using both speech
and braille. Books can be navigated using all standard reading
commands including reading by character, word, line, paragraph, and
continuously with Say All. As JAWS reads, pages turn automatically so
you can enjoy a book without interruption.

JAWS can only access Kindle books that support Enhanced Typesetting.
The product details for the book on the Amazon web site indicates if
Enhanced Typesetting is enabled. This exposes the necessary
information to screen readers and provides access to the book content.

Tip: Pressing CTRL+HOME or CTRL+END while reading a Kindle book moves
to the top or bottom of the current page instead of the top or bottom
of the document as in other applications. To move to the beginning or
end of the book, you can use the Go to Location dialog box which is
accessed using the Kindle command CTRL+G.

This is all outdated.
You do not need a plug in of any kind to use Kindle for PC with Jaws 18.
Just download the Kindle for PC app, and all of your Kindle content

You do not need a special version of Kindle for PC, and you do not

I find Youtube Red very easy to use with Jaws on the web, and on IOS as
well.
I find it is definitely worth the price.

You might try pressing the Applications key while focused on the column you

This is what I need to do, hit control home and then Jaws down arrow.
Why is this, this is not acceptable.
This behavior does not happen in Windows 10 mail, messages are read in their
entirety when opening an email.
Work arouns like control home and then doing a say all such as must be done
in outlook are a productivity killer and should not be tolerated.

Every time I open up an email it starts reading in the middle, or sometimes

How do I get it to read at the top?

I'm using windows10, jaws18, MS2010, and outlook, on a 32 bit computer.

Thanks Patti

Re: [JAWS-Users] opening up emails

2017-05-31 Thread Jim Fettgather
This happens to me all the time in Outlook 2016, very irritating, Jaws will
start to read the message, then announce the number of links in the middle
of the message, and either continue reading or start from the beginning.
This has to be the most annoying, irritating disruptive behavior I have ever
experienced with Jaws and email.
Incidentally, it does not happen in windows 10 mail, only in Outlook 2016.

Hi,
It happens here too, because you are anticipating the start of the mail. Let
the clubs from field address almost speak out, press up arrow and then down
arrow and read it line by line,
Sometimes, I have to press control home and use the read all commands,
that's my work around.
Try alt F, then T, it will open on general, you can tab through the menu and
press OK, if any changes were made.
Press the command again, but this time arrow down to mail and tab through,
if you make any changes, press the OK button.
I will look at this again.

Hello to the list.

On two different computers running the latest Jaws 18 and Outlook 2016, I
have noticed that when pressing enter to open a message, jaws will begin to
prematurely read the message, and then interrupt itself with "Message has 13
links", and then either continue to read the message, or, start back at the
beginning.

This seems to happen about 70% of the time.

I have turned off all panes, the reading pane, preview pane, all other panes
that I can find in Outlook.

This behavior does not seem to occur in Outlook 2013, but is very
distracting in outlook 2016.

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this same behavior?

Thanks a lot.

Re: [JAWS-Users] protected view

2013-08-20 Thread Jim Fettgather

There is a way to turn off protected view for Word documents.
1. From within Microsoft Word, Press Alt F followed by the letter T for
Options and press Enter.

2. Press T to highlight Trust Center.
3. Press Tab until you get to Trust Center Settings and press Enter.
4. Use up and down arrow keys to highlight Protected View.
5. You can tab to four checkboxes, and you can uncheck the ones that you
feel are safe to uncheck. Perhaps the last one regarding data execution
should remain checked.

This is what I have done at my work location and all seems to be well.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 8 Mail

2013-04-14 Thread Jim Fettgather

Now, this is interesting.
When Windows 8 mail initially starts, using Jaws 14, it starts with the list
of messages, and I can tab through and hear New, Respond, Delete, Microsoft
Office, my name, and then one silent area, and back to the scrolling list
view.
When composing a message with Control N, I can also tab to the send button
after I have written a message.
The part that I find really strange is that to read a message, I have to
highlight in the list, and then press Shift Tab twice to be placed in the
body of the message.

Very unusual for sure.

making the program unusable. Freedom Scientific just kind of chuckled when I

[JAWS-Users] Extraneous Speech with Jaws and Internet Explorer

2013-03-28 Thread Jim Fettgather
Hi to the list.
This is a phenomenon that I have been wondering about for a long long time.
Generally, when you activate a link in Internet Explorer, it seems as
if Jaws renders lots of extraneous speech, reading bits of the
previous page, reading bits of the next page, and then finally, Page
has 3 headings and 57 links.
I sure would like to find a setting that would render Jaws completely
silent until the statistics of the newly loaded page are read.
This is especially annoying in Flexible web, where you set up a rule
to start reading at a specific point on the page.
It seems as if Jaws will eventually begin reading at that part, but
again, after lots of random and irrelevant speech.
Any thoughts sure appreciated.
Thanks.
